Laggy/buggy PC
Dec 10, 2008
A while ago I turned my PC off by the main power while it was booting up by mistake, and after that it started giving me the BSOD saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" with the error code "0x00000024". I managed to fix that with CHKDSK commands but now it's extremely laggy and buggy, for example, when I open a window, the window bar doesn't show on the task bar, music doesn't play, videos don't play, etc.
Would reformatting help? Or are the disks just broken beyond repair?

first off my computer is a dell latitude c640 with xp pro. despite its age i have never had any problem watching videos or streaming audio offline. now it is laggy. if i watch a video it will every so often skip and jump. i then listened to a local radio station that is streamed offline and i get the same thing. lag. all video does it, fox on demand, any amazon video on demand i have and even Internet!
its not my internet connection i will say this. i thought of that but knew it could not be. for one thing i have watched videos before and never had that problem. also i am using my colleges internet connection so yes it has enough bandwidth. then there is the fact that it is not just video online. it is also video offline. downloaded amazon on demand skips, ripped dvd's too and when i watch it on dvd it skips too.
it recently started about sunday. if it helps i installed a few programs prior to this problem.
1)video lan http://www.videolan.org/been uninstalled since2)ms office 2007 (highly doubt this is a problem)
3)service pack 3 was installed sunday night(automatic update)

I had to format and clean install on a new Dimension 3000 b/c of software that they had installed and we have an older version of it. The install was clean and so was the rest of the software installations from what i can tell. I installed all the proper and current drivers for the dell hardware etc. As well as all the windows and office updates. Everything worked great for about 2 weeks after everything was installed. Now the OS takes forever to boot(the blue scroll thing screen scrolls there for about 45 seconds while the HD LED glows continuous.) And then when i actually login, the sound is all crackly and muffled. But after it loads up it seems to run fine, no sputtering etc. I tried check disk and defrag as well as adaware adn spybot. Still having the same problem.
I dont get it...everything was fine for 2 weeks and now its getting buggy. Any ideas?

I recently got some virus which kept on duplicating, so my AVG antivirus could not permanently delete. So I did a clean reinstall of Windows XP Pro 32 bit with a full reformat. It is still very buggy. Some of the bugs even resemble the errors I was having before the reinstall. There were things like "could not load cmd.exe", AVG antivirus marking almost every Window's .exe as a Heur virus, "could not load login because of data execution prevention", and programs like Windows Media Player 11 and Visual Studio not being able to be completely installed.
Should I be concerend that this is a hardware issue? The harddrive should be OK because a full format should have detected bad sectors. Maybe my RAM is damaged?

After synchronizing the files using SyncToy (1.0 final), a dialog pops
up:
" Exception during run: The event log file is full "
It's back to the main interface of SyncToy after I click it away.
Has anybody encounter such error in SyncToy 1.0 final?

My laptop runs Windows XP Pro. I'll post any needed information.
The problem is this:
I purchased Everquest from gamestop, installed it and tried to burn the exe to a disk (it was a download purchase) so I could delete the file that was eating up a lot of space. I created the file to burn it to the cd and then went to delete it but the recycle bin froze. The laptop started running slower and slower and I noticed that my free space was getting progressively smaller (i.e. had 11 gigs went down to 8, went into safe mode to try to delete the files from the recycling bin and rebooted and it went down to 5). Now the files are in a folder called hidden_files/recycler and the clean disk doesn't recognize the recycling bin as having files to remove. When I open the bin it freezes up and I'm still losing memory.
I tried using the following to delete the files in the command prompt but it said file path not valid.
1.Open a command prompt window
2.Type cd recycled
3.Type attrib -h inf*
4.Type del info
5. Restart Windows
Every time I try to delete the files it freezes up or acts like they were deleted but upon searching for the files they are still there and my memory is still really low.
I'm willing to post anything that may be needed to resolve this problem just let me know (as I don't know what would be helpful here or what to run and post logs of).

In normal mode, internet explorer will not display any web pages. However, if you try
to bring up any site (By IP, or URL) and let it sit there for 30 minutes, it will eventually. Then, once it brings up a single page, you can browe. BUT ONLY IF YOU ACTUALLY TYPE "HTTP://" AT THE START OF THE URL OR Click on a link on the page it finally brings up. Now, to make matters worse, it does not exhibit any of these problems in Safe Mode With Networking. In that mode, everything works perfect. I can browse with no lag what so ever, I can do just about anything.

Okay this is driving me nutso - I have checked the RD client on the PC side and there is nothing to turn this off anywhere...
I have a desktop which I always have Num Lock on as it has its own dedicated keypad. The problem is when I Remote Desktop into my laptop my laptop does not have the dedicated keypad the numbers on the keypad portion are actually 1/3rd of the letters on the keyboard (I.E I,O,P would be 7,8,9) when numlock is on. It's fine until I disconnect and I go home...
When I get home I start typing as I normally would but half the letters look like numbers because the Num Lock is still on from when I used Remote Desktop to connect in.
I know the obvoius solution is to turn off Numlock on my PC before I disconnect Remote Desktop from the Laptop but I really just want the Laptop to revert back to its original keyboard state once I disconnect...
Anyone know of a solution?
