Keyboard Is Totally Messed Up
Dec 29, 2008
I don't know how it happened, but I was cleaning my keyboard after I spilled tea on it and hit some random keys and now my control button puts my computer into standby mode. My backspace key does not work and my plus and minus buttons do not work either. I think I remapped some keys somehow during the cleaning process and was wondering if anyone knew how to set everything back to default.btw, it's a pain to have to highlight typing errors with mouse and cut it out of the text instead of being able to use backspace or delete.

i've just finished rebuilding my pc, and i am left with some frontside sound/usb cales which are like mic - power, l - out, l - ret, etc i decided to put them in the slot which looked right for them on the motherboard, i wasn't getting very good sound from it so i decided to unplug them so i could research where they go, now even my internal motherboard sound isn't working at all (don't have a spare soundcard) tried doing a system restore/unstall/reinstall/cleared cmos/unistalled/reintstalled realtek ac97 codecs, i'm pretty sure i haven't blown the ports on the motherboard, so what could it be, i neeeed my music.

I want to sell my system but I want to totally clean my hd. I've heard that fdisk is the best to get but when I built this machine I decided not to get a floppy drive. Anyone know of a way to wipe it clean without being able to recover filez?

What would make a C: drive with only Win XP and nothing else on it fill up. It is a 10 GB drive. I installed XP Pro to it and everything else to different drives. The C: drive totally filled up and I couldn't seem to find anything to delete from it to make room. I did all the cleanup steps with no results. I have now reformatted it and am installing XP again, but would like to avoid this problem in the future if I can. Plan to use Fred Langa, of the Langa List, steps to lighten up XP, but not sure that will be enough since I don't know what caused the problem in the first place.

My friend was listening to music and then started up a game. My computer, being old and slow, couldn't handle it so it got all slow and kinda messed up. So he did something, I didn't really see what, and when everything cleared up, the desktop was totally inverted. It was upsidedown and backwards. Not only this, but the mouse was also backwards.

My XP Pro freezes thoroughly, mouse and keyboard in place, and the machine appears to be in a coma. I must power down to get out of it.The freeze may take place while the desktop is loading, or it may wait for me to do a few thinks, but it doesn't take long. If I boot in safe mode with network it doesn't freeze. If I boot in other than safe mode, when the cursor is left at center screen (after loading my info) it takes several minutes to finish loading systray, desktop, etc.

I recently had a computer guy install Win 2000 professional on a computer that had previously had win 98 which was really hosed bad. ( a clean install) Now, of all the luck it freezes after just a few minutes or perhaps 10 minutes sometimes. I mean it freezes, it will not respond to Ctrl Alt Del at all. Nothing will unfreeze it short of the reset switch. Weird huh?? The only thing I can think of that might have happened is I tried to do a Norton Live Update and it stopped and said that it did not complete, gave a long list of error messages of what did or did not happen and to contact tech support with the full body of message. I don't know if I am even registered with Norton all I know is that is says I have 365 or 364 days left on my license or whatever.

This is really BAD. I've never heard of this happening quite like this, but here it goes:XP will NOT boot at all. There is no sign of anything on the screen whatsoever. I can't get into safe mode, nor use a bootdisk as far as I can tell. I cannot get any control through the keyboard or mouse, apparently. It's as if the computer is not connected to the monitor. I bought this computer from a friend one year ago. He is knowledgable, and had cleaned it up quite well. It had XP installed as well as the usual stuff like IE5/IE6, Mozilla, Adobe, Zone Alarm, etc. He had 2 HDDs installed, partitioned into 5 drives, for a total of almost 175 GB. Athalon 2100 CPU, 512 RAM (IIRC), Audigy 2 Platinum SoundCard

The computer will not boot. I have tried boot disk and it goes right to the A drive...I can run a diagnostic which passes all test. I can not go to the C drive or the CD drive but I can access the CD drive through the F12 which allows me to use start options. Nothing in the CD drive, except Norton Utilities, works and Norton only works on Drive A...Drives C & F are not there. They also come up as invalid drive specification in the Dos mode which is where I am stuck. I want to format the entire HD and repartition it. The message is invalid partition and the blue screen tells me there are too many partitions boot.

I have a friends PC, a gateway P4 2.6, winxp home. The mouse and keyboard up and died. He had a kvm switch, the electronic kind when it stopped functioning. I have tried usb, ps2 everything. The keyboard works on bootup, so I can get into bios etc... but when it gets to the windows screen, nothing. No mouse or keyboard. Safe mode is the same thing. Dont want to format and reinstall windows. On that note, I did try a repair, when it asks for admin password it wont accept it. Says invalid admin password.. The password IS windows admin password though. With no mouse even in safemode, and windows not accepting my admin password during repair,

I just finished assembling my new build. It boots and I can get to the BIOS. I even have it booting from the DVD drive so I can load Win XP.However, when I get to the Windows Setup and it asks me if I want to setup windows(press enter), Repair(some other key), quit(F3) my keyboard won't work. I hit "Enter" because I want to install XP and nothing happens. It is not responding to my keyboard strokes.
This is strange because the keyboard works in the BIOS.

Can I totally remove a file association so that type of file once again has no association set? I set some dat files to open with WMP which was fine for my purposes then but later changed them to mpeg files and so don't need to keep that dat file association anymore. I want to get the dat files back to having no particular program assigned to open them. All I can do now is change it to other programs which isn't what I want. Any way to start with a clean slate again? (I guess I could change the dat icon so I can tell what they are if there's not a way to unassociate them.) Dat files have always kind of spooked me, I want to be sure people don't click them thinking they'll play a vcd.

Im new to this forum but i am so thankfull that this site is hereMy problem is my 11 year old son downloaded a program that was supposed to find duplicate copies of files on his PC and delete them.Well he did this but in doing so he deleted some boot files(i beleave) and he cannot boot up.He downloaded the 4 bootdisk files from the net but still will not boot up from floopy drive either. The error message reads this>>> 'Windows 2000 could not start up because the following file is missing or corrupt....<windows 2000 root>system32 toskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the file. His computer is a IBM with windows 2000 loaded.I beleave there are 2 copies of windows 2000 on his computer because when he tries to bootup it gives him a choice of either copies.Ive tried the windows 2000 CD to boot in the cd-rom drive but either its not reading or maybe its because the disk is a copy and not original.

I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and every since I upgraded my computer had been a mess. I don't think my Virus Scan is working right and I have eTrust EZ Armor 2005 which is one that Microsoft recommends. My floppy drive isn't working either. I get a error message that says my driver is corrupt Error 39. My memory got full. I have 10 GB memory and I only have 4.17 left now. I have 512 Ram in my computer, but I don't know how much is left and don't know how to find out. Since I upgraded I can no longer shut my computer down from my desk top. I go to Start and click turn off my computer, then I go to shut down. I seems to go through the motions, but a screen comes up and says it is safe to shut my computer down, well it won't shut down with the button on thefront, so I have to push the button on the back of my computer.

I messed up my registry and now I can't get any audio, and my DVD and CD ROM drives won't play music/movies. Luckly I have a copy of the registry saved on my hard drive. When I try to merge the file I get this error " Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes" How do I go around this? I really do not want to re-install windows again.

While I was using the program, DVD Shrink, the screen from the program froze up. So I turned my power on and off to restart my computer. When I restarted it, Windows XP had a blue screen on which I never saw before that said it would go through 3 stages to fix any errors that shutting down my computer may have caused. After Windows automatically restarted, what comes on my screen with all the desktop icons is now messed up-- as programs automatically try to open, I get a box like this:
"ituneshe/per.exe- Bad Image The application or dll c:/windows/system32/att.dll is not a valid windows image"The same would happen for my anti virus program, and AIM.I can still access all my documents, and my internet works fine. But the startup process seems like the beginning of problems to come in the future. Does anyone have any advice how I can remedy this?

At first I thought it was my Hard Drive because my computer had become forgetful and when i tested it I found that I had "137 Reallocated Sectors". So I went out yesterday and bought me a new one. I have reformatted and it's STILL rebooting. I am about to pull my hair out..it's getting so frustrating. Here are my specs.

My sister sent me a link to a website with a 'funny video' and I downloaded it. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Anyway, I right-clicked and opened with VLC, and I have no idea how many different VLCs opened. The screen went black and suddenly my desktop is set to 4 bit color and 640x480 resolution. I can change the resolution, but every time I try and change the color, the screen goes black for a good 30 seconds, and when it comes back, it says "your settings have been changed do you wish to keep the bla bla bla" - but it's still at 4 colors. And while it's at it, it switches the resolution back to 640x480. I'm not sure what you need to know for this... I have WinXP and my video card is an Intel 82810E.
