I'm feeling pretty stupid.I just reinstalled XP on my laptop and did some customizations with TweakU and set it to not display my login name assuming that XP would bypass the login screen.Now I can't get into Windows! The Login screen is there with no login names.Is there any way I can force Windows to open and then change the TweakU settings?Is there such a thing as an XP boot CD or DVD that I can download?
View 6 RepliesI have a problem with one of the workstations in my small office, its win2000 Pro and once in awhile upon restart the logn screen turns to jumbled mush, half 75% of the screen is black, the rest blue. The only thing you can really see is part of th wn2000 pro welcome screen. Sometimes after u turn it off a few times it corrects itself but not this time so far and as far as i know it was spyware n virus free.I have seen this in one office before so i thought it was a fairly common problem but after doing a search for awhile I've found nothing on "messed up login screens".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to turn on my Windows XP SP2 machine and be on the desktop without having to be there to pick a login name. I installed a new printer on this machine and now it stops and waits for me to pick a login name. It was also going to the login screen whenever the screensaver was accessed. I was able to remove that feature by right-clicking on the desktop > properties > screensaver and unchecking "on resume, display Welcome screen".I remember when this happened on my old Win 98 computer I went into the control panel > network and changed the setting from "Client for Microsoft Networks" to "Windows Logon". Is there a way to do this in Windows XP SP2?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.
I bought a new system with XP OS. First time it is directly login into admin account.I created 2 more users on this system and created password for admin user.But when I switch on computer, It directly login into Admin user.Once I log off it is coming welcome screen and asking selecting user and Password.

View 18 Replies View RelatedWhat happened is I just installed a new Hard Drive and a fresh windows install (XP Pro with Service pack 3). After all was installed it logged into my account (Me) which was my account with Administrator privileges. I did a series of windows updates now when I turn my computer on it goes straight to the Administrator account and not my account (me). So I have to log off or switch accounts from Admin to Me. I just want it to login to Me all the time. So I am not smart enough to figure it out.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Win XP sp2 and I usually leave my computer on 24/7. This morning I tried to open a file but it never opened. I went into the task manager to see if its even processing and it was there but the ccapp was taking all the cpu. So i tried to shutdown and restart. After that windows boots up to the login screen just fine but when i click on my account it take a long time to show my wallpaper. I can pull up task manager and the cpu isnt being used. the hdd is only accessed in little bursts. After a while the start menu pops up. any keyboard commands like to bring up win explorer takes a long time and all the commands pop up in a big burp of of command executions. I'm trying to reach system restore but cant. I'm not sure how to get into safemode with this system because just after post when f8 is usually used to bring up the menu the system opens a boot drive selection screen. During the RAM tests during post theres text stating press del to enter bios and f8 to enter boot drive selection so im not sure how to get to safemode now.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm new to this forum but i am so thankfull that this site is hereMy problem is my 11 year old son downloaded a program that was supposed to find duplicate copies of files on his PC and delete them.Well he did this but in doing so he deleted some boot files(i beleave) and he cannot boot up.He downloaded the 4 bootdisk files from the net but still will not boot up from floopy drive either.The error message reads this>>> 'Windows 2000 could not start up because the following file is missing or corrupt....<windows 2000 root>system32 toskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the file.His computer is a IBM with windows 2000 loaded.I beleave there are 2 copies of windows 2000 on his computer because when he tries to bootup it gives him a choice of either copies.Ive tried the windows 2000 CD to boot in the cd-rom drive but either its not reading or maybe its because the disk is a copy and not original.

I don't think my Virus Scan is working right and I have eTrust EZ Armor 2005 which is one that Microsoft recommends. My floppy drive isn't working either. I get a error message that says my driver is corrupt Error 39. My memory got full. I have 10 GB memory and I only have 4.17 left now. I have 512 Ram in my computer, but I don't know how much is left and don't know how to find out. Since I upgraded I can no longer shut my computer down from my desk top. I go to Start and click turn off my computer, then I go to shut down. I seems to go through the motions, but a screen comes up and says it is safe to shut my computer down, well it won't shut down with the button on thefront, so I have to push the button on the back of my computer.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI messed up my registry and now I can't get any audio, and my DVD and CD ROM drives won't play music/movies. Luckly I have a copy of the registry saved on my hard drive. When I try to merge the file I get this error " Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes" How do I go around this? I really do not want to re-install windows again.

When I restarted it, Windows XP had a blue screen on which I never saw before that said it would go through 3 stages to fix any errors that shutting down my computer may have caused. After Windows automatically restarted, what comes on my screen with all the desktop icons is now messed up-- as programs automatically try to open, I get a box like this:
"ituneshe/per.exe- Bad Image The application or dll c:/windows/system32/att.dll is not a valid windows image"The same would happen for my anti virus program, and AIM.I can still access all my documents, and my internet works fine. But the startup process seems like the beginning of problems to come in the future. Does anyone have any advice how I can remedy this?
When ever i click on minimise the screen i wish to do so shrinks in the normal way but appears to disappear behind the task bar. So in my task bar i have nothing. But when i activate task manager its still running.

Anyway, I right-clicked and opened with VLC, and I have no idea how many different VLCs opened. The screen went black and suddenly my desktop is set to 4 bit color and 640x480 resolution. I can change the resolution, but every time I try and change the color, the screen goes black for a good 30 seconds, and when it comes back, it says "your settings have been changed do you wish to keep the bla bla bla" - but it's still at 4 colors. And while it's at it, it switches the resolution back to 640x480. I'm not sure what you need to know for this... I have WinXP and my video card is an Intel 82810E.

Then i tried to reboot but my password wasnt working, so i went into bios, and not knowing what i did i went to change startup pass and changed it... now when i reboot it says use a startup pass, but it wont even let me type it in....and i dont know how to start windows xp cd at reboot cuz for some reason it doesnt go through even when i enter the BIOS....can someone please help me? my pc is messed up.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a big problem, I was trying to change the icons for my file types in explorer specificaly under tools/folder options/file types. Well I changed the icons for the AudioCD,DVD,Drive,File Folder and Folder there was no bad results from the audio and dvd nor the others, it just didnt change my icons to what i wanted it to be so whatever i moved on. Well after i did those things i started to notice that when im using explorer every time i open a folder it would open in a different window so im like maybe i forgot to put a check in the open in the same window in the folder options. So I checked and to my suprise it was checked. I started to search the web for answers and I found a forum and saw that the problem could be in my registry specificaly in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT so I deleted the Folder,Directory and Drive registry folders in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT now I cant access my C drive and my folders fortunatly i can use my browser and other apps i just cant access my drive and documents .
View 3 Replies View RelatedHey guys, not sure if this is the correct forum for this but here we go.I have 7GB's of HD space that is being unused. It is not labeled or anything it is just there. I got Partition Magic to try and merge it with my C drive (due to that is where it was supposed to be in the first place). Anyway, it is not working, is there a way to do this that I am missing (without having to reformat the drive). During initial install of XP, created to partitions of one 80GB HD (C and D).C has 13GB (Should have 20) and D obviously has the other 60.If it comes down to it, I am prepared to backup HD onto an external then re-install but would really like to try and avoid that.

All my hard drives were in the NTFS format, but when I just checked, everything is in FAT, and every hard drive, including my backup hard drive is only partitioned to 1.99 GB. I lost all the data on the backup drive, but I was wondering if I would be able to recover it by restoring the partition or something? How would you guys reccommend I recover the data on my backup drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWell, I really did it this time... I decided to upgrade my laptop to XP... backed everything important, did the upgrade...everything seemed good. Worked. Then it notified me that the Norton was not working, & advised me to uninstall & reinstall... so I did... only thing is, I went ahead with the restart! I should of looked for junk/trace files, especially since it said it didn't completely remove it. So, when I restarted it, XP keeps coming to a screen that checkes the file system, fat ,32 scans & fixes files... dump files, etc. I can get to the IBM Bios setup, but I don't really know what to do from there.When I use a boot (maybe the one I'm using is no good) it says C: doesn't exist... I did try to start in safe mode, one of the times it appeared... but it didn't change the screen still did that fix-it thing.

It has a red hue to it and the blues are too bright and the start button isnt green, its black. The resolution only goes to 32-bit. There are no other options.

The other problem is, is that once it's done with it's like 30 minute loading usually like 5 min. to get running I log in but once im logged in the only thing that happens is my background loads. I did all the backing up of my profile and then dl'ed. Everything went fine and was working fine.Everything seemed to go fine and I was trying out the features. I still liked Firefox, but thought it would be nice using the IE when I had to now, better than it was before.I noticed that the XL Accelerator that we get through our ISP wouldn't work. It would just freeze up and I'd have to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close it. I called tech support and they directed me to reinstall it. I deleted the old and reinstalled. It still messed up, so I figured I'd just not use it.
