A Way Around Virus Scanners?

For several years I was on a dial [56k] connection, so I took a chance and didn't use a virus checker program. I had no problems and my computer ran fine and fast. The computer would boot in less than a minute and most programs like MS Word would open in 1 second or so. About six months ago I moved to a DSL connection and decided it was best to install a virus program. I tried several and was disappointed with the performance hit my computer took with each virus checker. Programs took longer to open, folders with many items that used to open right away now took 3 - 30 seconds to fully open, and my computer freezes for several seconds here and there. I ran various virus and Adware checks and my computer was fine. Yet when I de-installed the virus program my computer became its fast self. It made me wonder if DSL was such a good choice.
I finally decided on PCTools virus checker, but even now when I turn it off, my computer runs much faster and better.Recently a co-worker of mine told me he has a fast connection but hasn't used a virus program for years. He just goes to limited trusted websites, avoids opening email or attahcments he has any doubts about, uses an online email with a virus scanner, etc. He says he has never had a virus issue. I thought you could get a computer virus just by being online? Is that true? Just curious what anyone thought of the "no virus program strategy"? Is it stupid or safe?

Just got a newer Dell computer with Windows XP but neither my scanner, OpticPro 3630P or my Iomega Zip 100 MB will work with XP. I 'chatted' with someone at the company sites but the Iomega fix wouldn't work and the OpticPro site tells me that the drivers they have for my scanner will not work with XP. In fact they say that it only works with Win95 but I had it working with win98.Now, before I got the new computer I backed up my old one on zip disks using the programs backup/restore system. Fortunately I also backed up my really important stuff separately. So, I have 12 zip disks I can't get into and a scanner that won't work. Has anyone any ideas as to how I might get them working with XP or if I get a new zip will it open the backedup disks?? Being a senior on a fixed income, buying new items after just saving enough for the computer will be difficult.

Does any computer wiz out there know of an anti-virus site that will remove the rojan horse virus free? I know that all downloads are free,but once they find all the infected files,they won't remove them with out u paying for them

My PC recently got a fairly nasty virus (W32-Sinowal-based Maximus! or something along those lines) so we had to get it wiped. A few days later, my computer was all messed up again. I can only boot up in Safe Mode, my sound doesn't work, and it is running slower than normal. I need to find out if I have another virus (although the guy who fixed it downloaded Norton Anti-Virus and it seemed fine for a few days) or if maybe my computer is just dying. It's about three years old and apparently it was outdated before we even bought it. Is there any way the virus could have affected the computer's hard drive or whatever (yeah, I don't quite know what I'm talking about) or have I maybe gotten another virus?

I had a trojan Virus in the computer. I think that I got rid of it, but I am not sure could anyone that can read a log please tell me if there is anything else left in the computer. The computer now doesn't stay on-line it disconnects itself. I called the company that provides me with my internet service, and they said that I need a filter for the phone line. The person told me that, that will take care of the problem of the internet disconnecting. I think that it could be the virus I had in the computer. I wasn't able to get on-line for at least a week, I had gone and checked the disk for errors and finally the anti-virus program was able to find the virus's.

My anti-virus software keeps on detecting some virus from different folders from the C:WINDOWS emp folder, yet all folders are empty. It detects trojans from those empty folders . All folders from the temp folder are empty. Can't I just delete it all?

A few days back I noticed my Anti Virus was automatically disabled. It usually runs continously in the background but of late it was being disabled.I tried re installing but it was of no use. I recently was infected with a computer virus. Norton AntiVirus 2003 initially caught the virus and it supposedly deleted it, so I was not concerned with the message details. However, almost immediately after receiving the message I realized the virus was not completely removed. A DOS window popped up two or three times and then Norton shutdown. I tried opening Norton again but it would not open. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it would not reinstall. I tried the Windows Update site and the page shows no conent. Any ideas on how to identify the virus so I can take steps to remove it?

computer makes a clicking noise for a second then my screen freezes up i cant move the mouse pointer basicaly screen freezes. i know i have some infected files but i dont know which ones are infected as the virus scan dosnt finish and show end results

I am another victim of the trojan virus deleted (with Antivir) . I've read some post from JSntgRvr helping other guys to solve the problem. I hesitate to follow the same procedure to skip more problems...this the report from AV Antivir...

I have computer ***. antivirus 2007. It is telling me I need to manually remove a Byte.Verify virus X3 I have. Directs me to: Start. Control Panel. Java Plug in Control Panel. Chache Tab and then to Clear.I can get to this manually but no one at CA will tell me what I am clearing or deleting so I am afraid to do this. Can anyone tell me what I'm deleting or clearing? I would not lose any significant data or programming?

I have not been able to get into my C drive directly, I have got to use a shortcut,when I try to get into it directly I get a message saying "Windows cannot find 'RECYCLERs-2-8-49-100014492-100020849-100010941-4277.com.' make sure you have typed the name correctly, then try again. To search for a file, click the start button,and then Click Search." I only know that this is a virus because when I plugged a cheap usb storage stick I saw a folder called RECYCLER start to be created, I managed to stop it from finishing, but there is no RECYCLER folder in my C drive.

A trojan on my comoputer which I managed to remove using x-clean. Since removing it though my computer runs chkdisk when it starts up which tells me there are several cross linked files.I have let this proccess run to up to an hour but it doesnt do anything so I reset the machine.When I tried to defrag the hardrive in windows xp it starts analysing the hard drive and comes up with an error message up saying that the scan has been cancelled because of an error in file c:windowswiaservc.log.

I've been getting some pop-ups all day today. I had come across GM ENTER as a running file yesterday and delt with it by running ad-aware which found the files and using HJT to pull the reg keys. I'm getting alot more pop-ups today though. I've run ad-aware three times, each time finding several files. I've also run HJT again and pulled a few more reg keys that I knew were just wrong. I don't have much on this PC as its Server 2003, emg.centralspeed.com is the page that keeps trying to open. Also on some of the attempts the add button goes off and it attempts to add the page as a trusted one. It's annoying.

i used a vundo fix and got rid of all of the vundo viruses but two would not go away.
i got error message : Error: 75. Path/File access error
The two files were :

why these two vundos won't go away? They won't clean from my antivirus or quarantine either.They keep popping up in my system notifying me that they are there.

I have NO CLUE if this is some virus or something i got while trying to remove adwear or when downloading something off the internet, or whether it was my own mistake or something that wasn't done correctly... yeah.. I AM lost >.< Some times my computer just seems to stall. When i'm not doing anything, i don't notice it at all, it works just fine, but when playing a game (Just about any game), or trying to use a progam like acrobatic reader or microsoft word It seems to stall quiet often. 5-10 times every 2 minute
