View 6 RepliesI have just recently acquired a brand new laptop running Windows 8, and I'm experiencing an issue with editing the details of MP3 files. I can right-click any MP3 to open its properties and access the Details tab, but when I click on the fields for the different tags, nothing happens.
I don't recall ever having this issue on my previous laptop with Windows Vista, so I'm at loss trying to understand what is going on here. I'm not very tech savvy about the subject of permissions and accessibility, but it doesn't really seem to be related to that. The files are listed under my local user directory.
I am getting error "Save failed - Please check if this file is opened in another program" when trying to edit the hosts file in Notepad++. This has only started happening after a fresh installation of Windows 8 on a new computer. My previous computer with Windows 8.1 was able to do it correctly without any errors. I am using only one account on both computers, but for some reason on the new computer, the UAC keeps getting in the way. I have lowered the UAC warnings all the way down but that hasn't worked. Is there another setting I'm missing?
Note that I don't want to right-click Notepad++ and choose "Run as administrator" every time I want to edit a system file. I see that as a waste of time and an unnecessary step since I am already using an administrator account. I didn't have to do that on the old computer.
I've been having this weird problem since i installed windows 8 on my system. at first i thought it is nothing, but after reading forums i found out there is some problems with my system.
in the PC Settings page, when i click on personalize, i get 3 options, two of them are Account Picture and Start Screen, it opens fine, but i am NOT able to click or edit anything in that. I'll also attach screens for some extra information.
I have several webpages that I created in Windows XP using Notepad with simple html coding. When I open one of these files under Documents in Windows XP, it is shown exactly as it appears on the Web. In order to edit the coding, I click on "View" and then "Source" and the html coding appears.
I've transferred these files to my new computer with Windows 8, but there's no way to view the coding and edit. I right-clicked on a file and the dialogue box that appears includes "edit." But when I click on "edit," I get the message "There is no program associated with this file to perform this activity." Well, the "program" that I used to create the file was Notepad. Is there no Notepad in Windows 8, and if there is, is it incompatible with Windows XP Notepad?
Is there no way to edit html in Windows 8 without finding some editing program to download or purchase? (I gather from "Windows 8 for Dummies" that there isn't, since "html" is not even in the index.)
I have win8 64bit OS. I have converted abook saved in PDF to an ebook using a software. And it is required to save in SWF/html in order to read on ebook reader on tablet etc. But I am not able to do so in win 8.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a windows 8.1 64 bit PC with a program called 1stPage.exe installed.
When I right click a .txt file I get 'Edit with 1st Page' in the context menu and it also shows in the open with menu.
However HTML files do not show these options. I have checked the registry and it would appear that the program is set up on the open with menu exactly the same for both file types.
So it would appear that something is blocking 1stPage from showing against HTML files but I can't figure out what I need to change.
Is there anyway in Windows 8 to open a file with notepad?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a miner for a cryptocurrency and to do so I have to start a .cmd file. However, instead of running in command prompt, it only opens in notepad. I already tried this: Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 and I get the message that some keys are open by the system blah blah or I have insufficient privileges (I am the only user on my computer).
I also tried going into regedit and deleting any extension associates (not sure if correct name), but there was not one of .cmd, and when I tried creating one and pasting the cmd reg file I downloaded into it, it didn't let me.
I also going through set associations in control panel and setting command prompt to being the default program, but it just says "The program you have selected cannot be associated with this file type. Please choose another program."
I recently upgraded my W7 Home premium to a genuine copy of 8 Pro that I got through school and now every time it boots, note pad opens up and has a smaller window saying "Access denied." I don't see anything funny looking in the start up section of task manager and everything in 7 seemed to be good and virus free before the upgrade.

I reformatted my Windows 8 partition this week and reinstalled Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 beta due to a no sound and unexpected shutdown issue I had been having. All is well now with the new install, I have sound and it is no longer shutting down randomly. However, when the desktop view is first accessed after boot (whether from the desktop tile or by starting "control panel") I get 8 separate instances of Notepad that pop up, each with a dialog box containing a little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and proclaiming "Access denied".
All instances of Notepad are blank, and once I dismiss the 8 dialog boxes and close the 8 Notepad windows, I can freely go back and forth between the metro and desktop interfaces without them launching again.
Full disclosure, during the reinstall of Windows 8, the machine still experienced unexpected shutdowns (3 or 4 times) during the early stages of getting updates. Once a certain point was passed in the update process, it has been rock solid, and has run continuously for the past 48 hours. The unexpected shutdowns could have certainly introduced some problems as above, but I don't know where to look.
This is a homebuilt AMD quadcore desktop dual booting Windows 7. No problems whatsoever on the Win 7 side.
I cannot edit a folder when I've used "Take Ownership" and I've made sure in the Security tab that I have full control, I still get "You need permission to preform this action" when trying to move stuff in the folder. What could be wrong?

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy previous OS was Windows 7 64-bit. I used rip my favorite music tracks and was able to edit the details in the Details tab of the Properties window after right-clicking on the file name. The system hardware is the same. OS is now Windows 8 64-bit. But when I open the mp3 file's property window and go to the details tab, I get fewer options in detail and I CANNOT edit any one of them. I have run sfc - no problem. I have opened the Explorer as Administrator and still the same issue. Here's the screen capture:
I am the sole user of the desktop PC. And that I have another PC at another place with same configuration also running Win 8 64-bit. On that PC for the same file I see more details on the screen and I can edit the fields. I might post the capture from that PC later when I go there. I also ran the mp3Tag to get over the possible issue with ID3 tags.
So I use a program called crashplan to back up all my data, but the program began crashing whenever I open it. I would open it, the program would bgin running for a few seconds to a minute then just go away, close with no message.
SO I emailed crashplan and they told me to do this:
It appears that the CrashPlan backup engine is running out of memory. Please follow the instructions below to allocate more memory to the CrashPlan backup engine. Running Notepad or any other text-editor as an Admin, edit the CrashPlan engine's CrashPlanService.ini file to allow it to use more java memory:
1- Stop the backup engine: [URL] .....
2- Locate the Notepad program, right-click and Launch as Administrator
3- Go to File > Open, and navigate to C:Program FilesCrashPlanCrashPlanService.ini (note that you will have to change the option from .txt files to all files in the file selection screen in order to see the CrashPlanService.ini)
4- Find the following line in the file: -Xmx512m
5- Edit to something larger such as 768, 896, or 1024. E.g.: -Xmx1024m
This sets the maximum amount of memory that CrashPlan can use. CrashPlan will not use that much until it needs it. I would recommend starting out setting it to 768, and go higher only if you continue experiencing problems. You can set it as high as 2048 on 32-bit systems, or even higher on 64-bit systems. 6- Start the backup engine.
So I tried it but I couldn't save it, I got an error message that said "Access is Denied".

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere was a Metro app that I installed that I liked the functionality of but didn't like the fonts for; I knew where the configuration was to change the appearance (a CSS file in the C:Program FilesWindowsApps<app name> directory),
but when I tried to modify the file, it kept giving me an "Access is denied." error without any extra information.
I tried changing the ownership of the apps folder to my own account; didn't work. Changed the ownership of that specific file, and all the other files within that folder; still not allowed. I went into the PowerShell as administrator and tried copying or renaming the file; still "Access is denied." and nothing else.
Is there a way to make this file editable, or is the access blocked on a system level? I just want to change a few fonts around, but if Microsoft is trying to prevent me from doing so in order to protect its walled garden, then I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up on Windows 8.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI haven't found anything about dual booting when Win7 is on a RAID0 volume.
I've already tried a couple of different ways and keep getting the same error message......Win8 can't edit the master boot record, which I believe it can't because it can't find it due to the fact its on a RAID0 volume.
I'm not about to pop the RAID0 volume and have nothing but Win8 when not everything will work with it yet.
First, I tried to edit the 'hosts' file but wasn't let save the change as having no permission. I'm the only user and administrator. I took over ownership and gave full rights to myself, rebooted, still the same.
Second, I tried to run notepad as administrator for the same reason. It wouldn't open. Then, I wanted to start it from an elevated command prompt, but cmd didn't start as admin either. This, like notepad, opened nicely as 'normal', neither as admin.
I run Windows 8 Enterprise 64 bit.
I'm considering doing a clean install of Windows Pro 8.1 on an ASUS VivoTab ME400C-C2-BK tablet to recapture the space from the restore partition. After doing some research it seems others that have done this run into conflicts if attempting to restore/repair file corruption through Windows down the road because it looks at the BIOS and finds Core version reference.
Is there a way to insert 8.1 Pro key into BIOS to prevent version conflicts?
If not, is there a way to avoid version conflict issues with the BIOS? (simply reinstall?) I did search here but came up empty.
What I am trying to do is sort my favorites for the IE10 app. So far there seems to be no way to manually arrange the favorites so what I tried to do was change the sort in the favorites folder under C/USERS/myname etc. I was going to add a 1 to the detail tab in the file properties but I get an error message reading "You need to provide administrator permission to apply properties to this file." If I select continue the message reads "You need permission to perform this action" "You require permission from MEMe to make changes to this file"
I am the only user and set up as the system administrator. I have tried completely disabling UAC and installed "Take Ownsership" Nothing has allowed me to do this. Now my problem is there is no reason why I can't add a 1 to the detail description to a file for sorting. What harm could possibly come from editing that field. Most importantly, if I am the system administrator why am I fighting for permission from myself?
I am the only user on my computer and I am registered as a Microsoft user, yet I still have to grant admin access to run certain programs and edit certain files. How can I grant myself access to everything?
