View 6 RepliesI recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).
I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.
I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Why windows can't remember my view settings, sort by settings and thumnails ?
I have different types of view settings for different folders but everytime I restart my computer they change. Same thing with thumbnails expect they seem to last a couple days before disappearing, sometimes a thumbnail will appear on a different folder then it was set to.
I'm using Windows 8.1 x64.
In the MUSIC folder I have 1 folder for each artist. In each Artist folder I have 1 folder for each Album. And in each Album folder I have all the songs, with the cover art embedded in them, in every single .mp3 I have.
In folder options I've set folders to show thumbnails, not icon. So, each Album folder's icon is the album art of the .mp3 files it has inside. BUT in the MUSIC folder, all the Artist folders don't show the album arts they have inside. Their icon is not a folder's icon neither, it's like thumbnails of folders:
And I'd like them to show the thumbnails of the albums they have inside. Well, the maximum amount of images that a folder icon can show is 2, so if I have more than 1 album in an Artist folder, then the icon should be 2 random thumbnails (of 2 albums).
An example here:
I put a song (with embedded cover art) in the desktop. The archive's icon is the cover art.
Now I create a NEW FOLDER (the icon is a default folder icon) called "Album". I put there the .mp3 file. Now, the "Album" folder's icon is the cover art of the .mp3 file.
Then I create ANOTHER new folder called "Artist" (default folder icon), and I put there the "Album" folder. And here, the "Artist" folder's icon is NOT the cover art, but the icon of the image above, and I want it to show the cover art.
Notice that all album's folders have only .mp3 files, not hidden images like "folder.jpg" or anything else, just .mp3 files.
What drives me crazy is that like a week ago, Artist folders were showing cover arts of the albums they had inside (they picked up 2 random images, cause folders can show up to 2 thumbnails).
When you have music in a folder, usually the folder picture would be that of the album art of the music in the folder or just the file. Usually it would be just one picture sticking out of the folder. Recently when I gained more music, some of the album folders displayed two pictures sticking out instead of one. I have tried everything and also checked that all the tags and details are identical but made no difference. I attached two images. The first is how I would like the folder to look like, the second is how the wrong folder looks like. All music files are .mp3

The same thing happens for example.....
I like to see file extensions but it changes by itself ,it is strange that sometime it will keep my changes for a time but it will always go back to default. I have also gone back to the factory setting 3 times thinking I did something wrong cuz one time I couldn't get the preview pane (pain) or the navigation pane to remove. The only thing Im using at the moment that didn't come with the system is the Classic Shell Windows 8. My OS is windows 8 X64. I have always tweaked the system I was running at work or home but this OS doesn't wanna cooperate at all.
If my desktop background image is a slideshow from my picture folders, is there a way to open the folder holding the particular picture from the desktop? I ask because sometimes a picture will pop up, and I'm not sure what folder it came from. It seems like in older windows versions you could right click on the desktop and select "open folder" or something and be taken to the folder holding the picture. Is that still possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn all my other user names on this pc, I open a email, right click on image to save and it opens my NORMAL folders to save. One this ONE user name for some reason it opens a BLACK screen almost blank that has a colum of photos along the left hand side of the screen. it says files, pictures, go up, sort by screen.
It's crazy, I can't see anything like normal. It's so annoying and I've read online for hours and can't get this damn screen to go away. I want to see the classic view of the pictures folders when I am saving or uploading a photo. It does it on my other user names so what gives?
I'd like to send a image but it won't let me take a screen shot.
When I change the view option of a folder; IE List to Details etc; it changes for all the folders. I'd like to be able to just change the view for that single folder. It's really annoying having to reset the view with every new folder I decide to open.

Also with this problem another one came.I can't set a program to open some files,so the file associations for some files is broken. For example i can't set qTorrent to open torrent files. It just won't open them and the files apear as white documents just like I hadn't had a Torrent program installed already.I find it weird that both problems appeared together.
I previously had to reinstall windows on my machine, because of this problems. It worked normal at the begging, but today these problems appeared again.I tried scanning SFC Scan with no result.
How can i make windows 8 show this when clicking an item, i could not find a simple option unless i am loosing my vision
View 5 Replies View RelatedWin 7 was easy to make all your folders show details view and not what windows thought you should view it as.
I can't find a way to do that in Win 8. I have googled it many times and all attempts have failed. I have changed several folders to details view only to have them revert back to what windows wants me to view them as.
I would like to do this for all my folders and libraries, which I understand may not work for libraries.
Is there a registry setting I can set to force all views to be detail view?

I am having a folder on external usb harddisk of size 27.8GB which contains approximately 555000 jpeg files and 132000 folders.I am unable to see all my files in my folder and if I see the properties of this folder it is showing number of files as 440000 files and 25.6GB and when I tried to delete this folder it is showing number of files as 555000 ofsize 27.8GB.My external usb harddisk of size 1TB is formatted as ntfs of single partition.
How to solve this issue I mean I want to view all files in this folder.
I'm trying to find a way to make icons of images in Explorer larger than the "extra large" option. I don't see the slider in Win 8 Explorer to do that. Is there something else that could be done to size the icons to what I want them to be?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAny way to make text larger under ALL PROGRAMS?
I am using Start8 which has no option for hits. I could try Classic Shell instead and get cascading list of All Programs which I may do for the heck of it.
But in the meantime, I wonder if I can somehow get larger text in All Programs? I have messed with various dpi and other settings.
I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Pro 2. It has 13.3 inch screen. The default browser is IE11.
I can barely see the favorites bar or the menu bar. Is there anyway to make these appear larger?
Will there be issues if I try to create a Windows 8.1 USB Recovery Drive on a USB Flash Drive larger than 32GB? The Create a Recovery Drive actually formats the USB drive in FAT32 and makes it bootable. I plan to purchase a 64GB USB flash drive. Will the Recovery Drive Creator repartition the USB Flash Drive as a 32GB FAT32 partition? I tried the same on an external USB hard drive and it repartitioned the external hard drive as a 32GB FAT32 partition.

I have set profiles on the win7 and Windows 8 all to have shared file on, discover devices on and in the advanced sharing set up all setting are share file on/password off etc. All is fine except one of the Windows 8 pc's simply will not show any of the other pc's within the workgroup other than the other Windows 8 pc.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn windows 7 I was able to disable the thumbnails. When I click on a stack of programs in the task bar it brings up previews. I want to to just switch between them and not make me click on one of the preview or list items.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not getting any thumbnails showing for any of my pictures, .jpg, .bmp, .png, etc. I tried deleting C:UsersxxxxxxxxAppDataLocalIconCache.db then rebooting, no change.
I suspect I turned something off to see how but forgot to turn it back on. How do I get thumbnails to show for my pictures again.
I looked through gpedit but did not notice anything. This is what I'm seeing. I can change the icon that shows by changing the default program.
I need to see my thumbnails. 99% of my files are Photoshops and I need to see them, not the PS icon. I can only find "Show Icons Oly - Not Thumbnails" in my advanced folder settings. How do I do the opposite. Show all thumbnails - not icons?
View 9 Replies View RelatedJust noticed today that on hovering in the taskbar, thumbnail previews don't show but just a line of text. This has started from a couple of days. In between, randomly, the preview will show up. But mostly it is not over the past couple of days.

windows re-doing thumbnails, not when they are gone altogether!
As far as I can remember this happened totally randomly!
UPDATE: I've just realised that this is ALL files, not just images and it doesnt matter if they are on the desktop / pendrive / google drive etc..
The popup thumbnails of the open applications that jump up when you accidentally touch the Is it possible to suppress them?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
I've used the method 2 from the sevenforums tutorial to include a network folder in the Picture Library. In Windows 7 it works with thumbnails but not in Windows 8.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Video Thumbnails in Windows (File) Explorer have gone and been replaced by the generic Icon for the program I select to play the video files (VLC, GOM etc). It's happened to my AVI and MPG files on ALL my Windows 8 PC's.
The Folder Options are set to "Display file icon on thumbnails" and the Performance Options/Visual Effects are set to "Show thumbnails instead of icons".
I tried using the "Media Preview" program but it only works on about one in a hundred icons.
If it's happening on all my PC's it must be happening to others, how to fix this?
I can no longer see the thumbnails of images within Windows Explorer. I found which clones it's self multiple times across other sites, it didn't solve the problem ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedNot matter how many times I let Explorer build the thumbnails, after any reboot or shutdown/power-on the thumbnails get erased and I have to rebuild them again. It happens with all images and videos the same.
IMO, Windows 8 is definitely cool, but it has some rough edges that should've been ironed out before prime time.
