I have windows 8.1 installed in both my laptop and desktop. Both of them have the same problem.
Hyperlinks in metro tiles doesn't work. For example hotmail hyperlinks doesn't work or skype try to open but fail. I think the problem occurred after a deep registry clean i made but i am not sure. I tried to uninstall/reinstall the programs but no results.
I was initially very excited to hear that windows 8.1 allowed users to split the screen in any ratio they want (not just 80:20) in metro mode. However, no third-party apps seem to be compatible with this feature. Only Microsoft apps will expand to any ratios other than 80% or 20%. All third party apps will remain in the narrow 20% view even when you try to expand them to, say, take up 50% of the screen.
Windows 8.1. I had an issue with the general user folder name, which was shown as "Alex_000". Although this was a cosmetic issue only, I wanted to change this to "Alex". I successfully managed this by changing about 50 entries in the registry (via regedit).
So fine so good. Now I found out that there are still some leftovers with "Alex_000" in the Windows system, although I have tried to find every bit and peace, where possible:
When I try to open "Add or Remove Programs" in the Metro surface, I get an error message:
Windows cannot find 'C:Usersalex_000...Classic_{a lot of weird chars}.settingscontent-ms'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
Somewhere in the system, there must still be links with Alex_000 existing. I tried searching the registry, tried a simple search on C: disc - no success.
In other words: Everything works fine - except of starting the apps from the metro surface for "remove software", or "user accounts", and maybe some other system apps, which I haven´t discovered yet. If I do the same from the desktop, no problem - all these apps work well!
So where are the referring links for such system apps within the metro surface stored? Obviously not in the registry... How/where can i find these orphaned links for the said apps in Metro?
when I used one of my Metro App(Asphalt 8), The game showed the Gameloft logo but right after that it crashed.
Then I used another app which was Weather.. but it worked fine.. Again I tested Facebook app and it also crashed...
So then I downloaded one app (Flappy Birds Free) and it also crashed.. So I think that the downloaded apps are getting crashed.. I tried several fixes like using another user, turning off Windows Defender and Firewall, Clean booting, Updating Video drivers, scanning for viruses, using Metro apps troubleshooter, sfc /scannow, and all sorts of things.. There is only one more option left and that is to refresh Windows. But I don't have 8 CD. It got broken.. and I can't afford to buy a new one.. What should I do now?
I've been stuck without windows tiles for quite some time now. I've attempted many of the various tips and tricks out there to get this problem fixed. The one I can't try is the system refresh because the windows tiles don't work which mean I can't open PC Settings to get that started.
Is there a way I can do this without having to open PC Settings which wont actually open.
i have windows 8 installed and would love to upgrade to windows 8.1 but because the tiles dont work i cant open the windows store. Just like most people out there the other tiles work like chrome etc just not the standard windows 8 ones. no i dont have any additional antivirus or firewalls turned on. Yes I've tried to reset the tile service, yes I've tried the app diagnostic tool. Nothing is working.
Sometimes when I'm in metro, when I hit a panel nothing happens. It looks like something to do with alt tabbing, also sometimes when im in a app, i can't hit windows key to get out of it.
monitor is small, but it supports 2560 * 1256 resolution resolution is too high on my small monitor, so every text and pictures are too small on my windows
i already using my windows with scaling up icons, texts, by changing registry values.
but still, texts and tiles on metro UI is not changed, it still is in small size.
To make these tile's font size bigger, what can i do?
In DP there was possible to run Immersive CP directly from the Metro tiles, by launching tile with the toothed wheel? Is it possible to add the wheel tile again to Metro in RTM?
Here is the picture of the tile: Control.jpg
I of course know, that ImmersiveCP can be launched differently, but I want this for very special purpose. I don't want to loose time by extracting that from DevPrev.
The Tiles on my Windows 8 Start Screen are suddenly showing annoying thick border when I move the cursor over them, so is the user name in the top right corner. How can I stop this?
Ever since I got Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, it's turned my computer into Ricky Retardo.
When I click on the Metro tiles for People, Photos, Video, Games, whatever ... it grows to fill the whole screen, and then immediately closes again like nothing was supposed to happen. I figured I needed to restart my computer. That didn't fix it.
Then I installed the Windows Media Center 8 with the promo code and everything. When you first start it, it tries to setup, and asks you whether or not you want Express or Custom installation. Picking either or on both options causes the entire program to go unresponsive and crash.

When I first installed Windows 8 there was the IE tile, with lighter blue background and white icon. Then I installed Chrome, at first start I used it as my default browser, mostly in Windows 8 mode, sometimes in desktop mode, but it always had the grey background tile with the Chrome icon. I wanted to make new tiles for my non-metro apps with OblyTile, and because I use IE sometimes I made one for that too, but after that my Chrome tile became a standard non-metro style tile with blue bg and smaller icon, using it first opens the desktop then the metro-mode chrome, and the original IE tile (I kept it from the beginning) reversed to the original, blue bg, white icon style, but Chrome is the default browser.
reverse Chrome to the gray bg tile and make it open the metro-mode without first opening the desktop?
So, I have been trying to rid my Toshiba Satellite of a ton of bloatware they put on a new laptop running Windows 8. There are also some unnecessary Windows 8 tiles I can't get rid of from the big blue Metro start up screen.
Some, the ones that I guess are "apps" I can right click on, select "unpin" and they're gone, but others I cannot get rid of
Here's how my problem presents:
I select ALL APPS by right clicking on the blue Metro start screen.
Then I right click something like a game "It Girl" or "Polar Bowler" and I see PIN TO START, which I don't want to do, UNINSTALL, which I DO want to do, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, or OPEN FILE LOCATION. Uninstall just takes me to the control panel's "add/remove programs." Well there are no games there. I uninstalled them from there already. The other options just take me to the desktop
I'd love to be able to delete these tiles (some games, but also a number of Toshiba programs I'm never going to use.) But I've been unable to find the key.
My search feature isn't working. This is the main search that should start with you typing while the metro screen is up. Some time ago it just disappeared. I've tried a couple of things to get it to work, but I can't.
Ive got a bit of annoying problem with one of my Windows 8 computers. For some reason when I right click in the bottom left corner the administration tools don't appear like they do on other computers. Oddly though they do work fine on the same computer using another user account.
I use a roaming profile and I've tried deleting it and allowing it to be reloaded but that hasn't worked.
Edit: just want to add that the administration tools menu works fine on all other windows 8 computers using the same roaming profile.
I am using a Wacom Cintiq Companion and just upgraded to Windows 8.1. After the upgrade my right-click stopped working and when I try to right-click it freezes my left click so I have to restart.
I am live on my Windows 8 lappy having connected to this machine using RDC on my Win7 Boot Camp installation. I ended up on the Windows 8 Desktop since the Windows 8 machine was on the Desktop when I connected via RDC. The charm bar doesn't work (or at least I can't get it to work)--which probably doesn't come as a big surprise. I am trying to figure out how to navigate between the Windows 8 Desktop and Metro, including the charms. How to get this basic task done? The main problem is that I have not yet figured out key combinations that will do the job.
By way of explanation, my Windows 8 (older) HP lappy is a bit clunky compared to a MacBook Pro (MBP). I was hoping to use Windows 8 via the MBP because it is a much nicer machine from which to work. I first tried to get the desired navigation going via Mt. Lion/RDC, but had no luck. I thought things might work better if I connected to the Windows 8 machine through my MBP Win 7 Boot Camp installation using RDC, but I still am having no luck with the basic navigation I am trying to accomplish.
PS I am not interested in running Windows 8 virtually on either MBP installation.
PSS Perhaps I need to do more preparation on the Windows 8 lappy, e.g., make a shortcut or a taskbar pin that will take me to Metro, etc.
I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Windows Search option (which I know should be there, it's on my laptop running Windows 8). I think this may be the key to all of this.
I've bought Windows 8 when it was first released, but reinstalled Windows 7 again. Now I want to install Windows 8.1, but I get an error saying my product key is invalid. I've tried multiple product keys (We own multiple computers, two of which have Windows 8 installed), but I get the same error with all of them.
Edit: Because none of my product keys don't work, I can't install Windows 8 to further install Windows 8.1.
I find when I press the Windows key, or open the Start Screen and start typing, nothing happens. Usually the sidebar opens with search results, but recently it has stopped working completely. Also, the search charm on the sidebar, and the search button on the Windows 8.1 (update) Start Screen do not work either--when I press them, nothing happens.
At first I thought it was a Windows Search service that had stopped working, so I restarted them, but the problem persisted.
I've had windows 8 . The most serious issue is my pop email. I had a Comcast email forever. It's attached to all my accounts - medical, business etc etc. Windows 8 doesn't work with pop emails so I bought and installed office 10 to use Microsoft outlook. I am missing at a least of half my emails. Important emails. I have spent countless hours troubleshooting with Dell, Microsoft.
I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to Windows 8 Pro x64 and then to 8.1 (too many installed programs for a clean install)
Now, when I right click a shortcut and do "Open" or "run as administrator" it does nothing. If I double click it, it works fine. Also, if I try to open a cmd from the bottom left context menu it also doesn't work. I've no problems though to do "open" or "run as administrator" on the actual executable files, the problem is the shortcuts. Obviously there's something in the registry that needs fixing, but I've no idea what. I've tried all the usuals, sfc scanning, ccleaner, etc, but no luck. I tried with shellexview to check what is registered where in the context menu, but I didn't find that very useful either. The same happens in safe mode too.
EDIT:I did assoc .lnk at cmd and returned "lnkfle" and then I did ftype lnkfile and returned that nothing is associated with this. Dunno if that's how it should be in 8, but that's the same winxp returns.
I really like Windows 8, but I have a problem with the app that controls messages. It's linked with Facebook, so whenever one of my friends is messaging me, I'm can answer from the app. Pretty smart, I think.
However, I have a problem. I have to friends with same name and last name.
My problem:
Friend number 1 is chatting with me.
Friend number 2's profile picture appear in the app.
Sometime friend number 2 recieves the message I'm sending to friend number 1.
Another problem is that the app doesn't seem to figure out if I already read the message on Facebook.
I have an old Toshiba notebook here, that has always had WinXP Pro installed.
Lately, I have installed Windows 8 Enterprise on it, but now the sound doesn't work anymore. I have tried downloading the official drivers from the Toshiba support site, but they don't work.
Specs:
Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 Model number: PSAC1E-04X01GDU Windows 8 Enterprise 32-bit
After updating to Win 8.1 RTM the Store App doesn't work anymore. Everything else runs fine. After opening the Store App it takes only one or two seconds and the screen get's back to where it was before. The app is still opened, but does the same as soon as it's activated again. Is there a way to reinstall the Store App?
I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a Logitech K800 Keyboard (wireless/illuminated) and I'm continuing to be frustrated by the fact that the Mute button does not work. Oddly enough, I had the same problem with a previous Windows 8.0 Pro install -- it went away when I upgraded to Windows 8.1. But the problem started again shortly afterward (maybe a week or two). I have the latest drivers and apps installed from Logitech.
After a reboot, the first time I hit the Mute key momentarily mutes the sound but then the sound returns (maybe after 1 second). After that, hitting the Mute key has no effect at all.
I have searched Google for a solution but nothing matches my problem. Oddly there are reports of all volume-related keys not working, but the Volume up and Volume down keys still work for me.
I'm not exactly sure when this problem cropped up since I don't use it often, but when I type "cmd" in Modern UI and right-click on the program, choose Run as administrator, I'm dropped to the desktop and nothing happens. This also happens if I list programs installed through the Modern UI and right-click on Command Prompt.
However, if I go to windows/system32 and right click CMD and choose Run as administrator in Desktop mode it works fine. I also installed Stardock's Start8 to return the classic start menu and when I type cmd there and choose Run as admin it works fine, or if I right-click the Start button and choose Run cmd as admin (not exact wording) it works fine. The Run as admin problem only seems to affect the Modern UI mode.
How this can be fixed? It's not that there aren't workarounds, it's just I prefer things to work as they're suppose to. I've checked my user credentials as well as the UAC settings and everything looks fine. How to fix this short of "re-install Windows".
ive been having this for ages on my windows 8 acer laptop, randomly my keyboard doesnt work anymore (happend 5months ago) ive been using desktop keyboard since
