Windows 8.1 x64 here. When I open "My Documents" or "My Music" or any Explorer Windows, the default Ribbon Tab is "Home". Well, I don't use any of the buttons in that tab, and I'd like to make the "View" Tab the default, so each time I open Windows Explorer, it's in the "View" Tab. Hope I can do it...

I can't find a way to do that in Win 8. I have googled it many times and all attempts have failed. I have changed several folders to details view only to have them revert back to what windows wants me to view them as.
I would like to do this for all my folders and libraries, which I understand may not work for libraries.
Is there a registry setting I can set to force all views to be detail view?
I'd prefer to have details for all folders. It looks like I found a solution for the annoying auto changing of folder types:

But I also want the view to stay details even if I change it in explorer's view menu to look at something. In this case currently the setting is immediately saved somewhere and next time I get that view. I want it to show details the next time I visit it...
(I have also disabled thumbs.db and desktop.ini via registry settings.)

The file manager I use does take over all file and folder operations by default, but even turning off the "Explorer replacement" option, the ribbon remains missing...
i know how to disable the tool tips from popping while hover nearly every where,but i can't seem to get rid of the ones on the explorer ribbon,eg. expand ribbon after you hover over the arrow and especially on the file one also,like come on these are so explanatory i don't really need a tool tip box popping up for them.

About the ribbon, I like it... One thing that bothers me though is that, it may be too easy to get to an option... namely show/hide files under the view tab. Is there a way to edit the contents of the ribbon menu, so I can get rid of the show/hide files toggle on the ribbon? I know we can hide the ribbon or use third party program to disable the ribbon altogether. Is there a native way to just edit ribbons?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have a 10 pc'c 6 of which run XP Pro two of which run Win7 and two run Win 8.1. I have set us all up as a workgroup with homegroup disabled on the two Windows 8 pc's. I have set profiles on the win7 and Windows 8 all to have shared file on, discover devices on and in the advanced sharing set up all setting are share file on/password off etc. All is fine except one of the Windows 8 pc's simply will not show any of the other pc's within the workgroup other than the other Windows 8 pc.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just built a new computer and Installed Win8. The motherboard, processor, and system drive are all brand new Intel stuff; the media drive is a new Seagate. Programs get up and running just fine, but I have transferred my files over from my old xp machine, and Win Explorer is very slow to access them.
I'll open a folder, and more often than not the thumbs will not be there; I'll then try to open or preview a file and I'll get the green progress bar over the address bar. This will often take up to a minute or more to run, and if I leave it be then the icons will usually appear and the files will then be accessible. If I try to open or preview a file before it's done things lock up on me.
After navigating away from that folder and allowing some time to pass however, the thumbs dissapear again and I am back to square one. sometimes the thumbs will reappear all on their own. this seems to be an issue whether we're talking large files or small, or folders with 100's of files or as few as 8. The very same files are instantly accessible by the new comp from the original locations on my external USB drive and on my xp machine over the network. Once they are copied to the new machine is when things get bogged down. This seems to be the case both on the system drive and the media drive.
Furthermore, right from the very beginning, I've had icons disappearing and reappearing from my start menu apps page.
I have tried the following to resolve the problem:
- I have optimized the folders in question for both the types of media therein, and back to "General Items" again
- I have disabled indexing both on the drives themselves and in the libraries control panel
- I have run a full system virus scan with Bit Defender
- I have contacted Windows support and they have run a scan that showed Windows itself to be working properly
One thing that occures to me is the problem seems to be with the SATA drives and the SATA drives only, but if there's something wrong with the mother board wouldn't my programs have trouble opening too?
Running windows 8.1 and i use 3 browsers, my main (default) is Opera, the issues i have are opera is set as default browser in opera settings, but for instance when checking emails say overclockers uk i see something catches my eye, i click it and link opens in opera, not in win 8.1, it pops a box up asking how do you want to open this type of link, firefox, google chrome or look for app in dam app store [URL] ....
I go to setup default programs to set associations and guess what, opera is not in the list [URL] .....

I went to go set photoshop as the default for opening a jpeg, and I noticed this weird option on the list that says %1. I don't know how to get rid of it it is very annoying. I tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner and removing "%1;" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileAssociation. Nothing has worked so far, What is %1 anyway?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot get any info at the Apps screen. I can move all around the screen, I can search for anything but apps. I went to uninstall and all the programs are there. I in my eagerness to clean up things stopped some program which controls the apps screen. I can call up the task Manager , then wait a minute and all my icons start to populate. I then close the task Manager and I can run any program I want. Some I don't have a desktop icon I just go the program files and select the one I want. Also my grandson uses this PC. He goes in as a different user and its all there, he can get all his apps to display on the screen. How can I get the apps screen back and populated with my programs?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).
I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.
I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP a week ago and have not found the differences too difficult.
However, I have fiddling about for hours trying to find a way to have more than one window to view.
What I am trying to do is view my electric/gas & at same time I have my excel spreadsheet open on top, so I can input figures. In XP I was able to to do this.
In Windows 8, I seem to be permanently in full screen view & keep losing previous windows and I do not have tabs in the task bar or anything else to say what is open. Have I missed some setting? Controlling the windows.
I need to make a short cut I can place on my desktop to switch to Metro view.
Is there any way to do this?
I have looked hard but can find no info on how to do this.
I do not want to use the keyboard short cut it must be a short cut OR a batch file.
Why windows can't remember my view settings, sort by settings and thumnails ?
I have different types of view settings for different folders but everytime I restart my computer they change. Same thing with thumbnails expect they seem to last a couple days before disappearing, sometimes a thumbnail will appear on a different folder then it was set to.
When you have music in a folder, usually the folder picture would be that of the album art of the music in the folder or just the file. Usually it would be just one picture sticking out of the folder. Recently when I gained more music, some of the album folders displayed two pictures sticking out instead of one. I have tried everything and also checked that all the tags and details are identical but made no difference. I attached two images. The first is how I would like the folder to look like, the second is how the wrong folder looks like. All music files are .mp3

Whenever I click off the PFD, I see everything else, but the PDF is gone. I'm trying to get some info from the PDF to Excel, but it's really hard to do this in Widows 8. In Windows 7 and previous versions, I could see more than one thing on my screen at the same time. Now, the PDF simply takes over control of everything else, so you see the PDF and that's it and that's all.

I made the mistake of buying windows 8 assuming it was just windows 7 fixed up, wow was I ever wrong The problem I am trying to solve at this moment is I set my folders to show medium icon view and no matter what it always reverts back to details (default view) I have reset all folders and applied to all folders but it changes back. I like to see file extensions but it changes by itself ,it is strange that sometime it will keep my changes for a time but it will always go back to default. I have also gone back to the factory setting 3 times thinking I did something wrong cuz one time I couldn't get the preview pane (pain) or the navigation pane to remove. The only thing Im using at the moment that didn't come with the system is the Classic Shell Windows 8. My OS is windows 8 X64. I have always tweaked the system I was running at work or home but this OS doesn't wanna cooperate at all.
I'm running with Windows 8.1 and still trying to get used to it, my issue now is that on some but not all videos on FB that I try to view in fullscreen it only last a matter of seconds before freezing up automatically going wacko back to the original posting and then scrolls on it's own...........

If my desktop background image is a slideshow from my picture folders, is there a way to open the folder holding the particular picture from the desktop? I ask because sometimes a picture will pop up, and I'm not sure what folder it came from. It seems like in older windows versions you could right click on the desktop and select "open folder" or something and be taken to the folder holding the picture. Is that still possible?

So upgraded to 8.1 from 8.0 in the hope it was more user friendly but no evidence so far but that's not my issue...now when I'm in Internet Explorer if I click on a link or even a webpage...it takes me to a blank screen that tells me to 'check the link'....if I refresh nothing happens but if I go back to the original link or web icon and try again it loads the page (sometimes takes a couple of goes to do it)...also it keeps asking me to 'login' to frequently used things like facebook and my Hotmail account which it never did in the past....when using 8.0 it was all good but nothing but trouble in 8.1.
