Is there anything I can do to fix this, last thing I would want to do is go back to windows 7. Games run slow in windowed mode with occasional jumpiness and in full screen they become so slow till the point it's unplayable.
is there anything i can do in order to play old games on my windows 8.1 HP Widescreen, example like Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time. I installed it fine but cannot launch the game. I try to set compatibility mode but no luck.
Apparently DirectDraw games don't run to well on Windows 8.
I recently wanted to play a Desperados an old isometric tactics game. But it ran like 10% the speed it's supposed to. So it was unplayable.
There are some alternative ddraw stuff out there. Actually one works somewhat: with wine3d-s ddraw.dll (and dependencies) the game runs mostly normally (with occasional crashes), but the game HUD is total garbage. Mostly black sometimes the proper thing flashes when I click on them.
Is there a proper solution for playing old ddraw games?
windows 8 Games app the green app with a Xbox controller freezing computer. It just happened to me was very strange i was renewing my Xbox live threw it as you can do that. and the Games app freeze my screen not all the way the mouse moved very slow, and it would freeze from time to time. and then it went from the Games app to the modern interface and then back into Games app,and then it finally came out of it. It has been OK since could it be the application hung up?
When I try to run the client, it tells me that there is a connection error, and I should check my internet connection. Well obviously, just the fact that I am able to post this thread shows that my connection is fine. I would like to reinstall the client, but it doesn't even show up in control panel to uninstall it.
When playing games on my laptop, i've been getting warnings that the game (Chivalry and Red Orchestra 2) Use to much memory and should be shut down. I have a Intel HD 4000 graphics and a Nvidia 720m cards in my laptop. Also with 8 GB's of RAM.
I just bought this Sony VAIO Fit 15a and i play fps games like League of Legends, Dota2 and COD4:MW and at the first ten or so minutes i play them smoothly but after that the fps will be halved and it seems like its lagging. I tried to play them all in lowest settings but the problem still persists.

I have 8.1 up and running and I have got the desktop working closer to 7. almost dumped it from my laptop, but I am trying to hang in there.
a LITTLE issue I still have is the fact that the games that I can and have downloaded from the Windows store (Hearts, Solitaire, Spider etc. require an internet connection to actually enjoy them ( I could have missed something). As I spend 5 to 6 months cruising the USA in a Motorhome where internet access is poor or non-existent, I really miss the games that I had installed in Vista and 7. Is there a way to copy the game files, DLL's or whatever, from Windows 7 to 8.1 on my laptop.
I can get something like 110 FPS in Dota 2 but after sleep mode it will fluctuate from 10 to 30, 40 if I'm lucky, FPS. This happens on Windows 7 as well, I have to constantly reboot my PC and obviously I'd rather not do that, since it's bad for my hard drive.
This is my GPU usage while this problem occurs: [URL ....
how to delete link shortcuts out of the "Games" folder on Windows 8? I put a link shortcut in there by accident and it got stuck in there. I can't delete it or anything.
I have bought several games on steam and it have always worked just fine. But I recently copied the shortcuts to the Games window and now something has gone wrong. It is the Steam shortcuts that I have copied and it seems like the Games window doesn't like Steams shortcuts. Now I have several games that I have bought on steam in my Games window and I can't run them from there and I can't delete them either. I can play them using a shortcut from the exe-file.
Nothing happens when try to run the icons in the games window and when I right-clicking on the icons no menu appears, I have runned the Ccleaner to fix the registry but it hasn't worked and a the error sound plays when I mark the icon and press delete and I have tried to use the shift+delete combination.
How do I get Steams shortcuts to work with my Games windows and how do I remove the icons that I can't use??
For the past few weeks, I had been having issues with my computer with black screens only during gaming.
At first, it seemed like a power issue since the machine kept shutting off and rebooting with no BSOD or error codes. So I got a new PSU.
Still kept happening - tested each GPU individually and all passed without error/problems.
Black screen problem still persisted. So I installed Win 7 x64 on a spare HDD and checked to see if it was software/drivers - still got black screen/reboot.
Decided it had to be the motherboard - RMA'd the board and just got a replacement (2 days ago). Still get black screen/reboots.
Reflashed the GPU BIOS - worked for a while when the voltage was left at stock (instead of 1.212V). However, still got black screen/reboot after about an hour.
I decided to test RAM w/ MemTest86+.
Tested RAM @ XMP setting (Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB 9-11-11-31 @ 1.65V) - got a ton of errors in MemTest86+ (411 errors after about 8.5 hours).
Reset RAM to "Auto" (1333Mhz) tested again - no errors so I booted into Windows. Tried playing AC4 and got black screen + reboot within 10 minutes.
Tested each RAM stick individually today and 3 of them passed fine with no errors while the fourth one had errors in the first and second passes - 10 errors.
Took two sticks out and put two "good" sticks of RAM back and fired up the computer.
Booted into Windows and ran Heaven 4.0 & Valley - both passed without issue with the GPUs OC'd and overvolted @ 1.212V.
Thought I had solved it. Fired up AC4 and got a black screen in about 10 minutes. Tried different GPU settings (stock, lower OC, no over-volt etc.) to no avail - all gave black screens within 20 minutes (some sooner). Tried BF4, got a DirectX error - game wouldn't even start! Tried several times - nothing! Tried BF3, got a black screen within 3 minutes.
My PSU connected via a thick 12AWG cable to a 20A breaker. The PSU cable (PSU: Lepa G1600) itself is quite think (albeit short).
Why this is happening - I have either tested or replaced everything.
There are no error codes; just a bunch of Event ID 41 in Event Viewer but that doesn't indicate anything useful (just unexpected crash/reboot).
I'm having a problem with certain full-screen apps and games disappearing from the taskbar. I can alt-tab to get back to them, however. I've found the problem affecting Hearthstone, XBMC, and Skyrim.
my old computer recently broke down so I got an extra laptop that my father had. I've been trying to play several games that I've downloaded but I need to update my graphics driver. The issue with that is the manufacturer is "(Standard Display Types)" DxDiag.txt (system information)
bought lenovo ideapad y510p a month ago and its been a havoc since. every time i play games, it begins to freeze or hang after 20-30 minutes. im running windows 8 64bit factory installed. all the drivers are from lenovo itself. this is very frustrating and i feel like cheated after buying 1300$ USD notebook that doesn't runs well.

I'm creating this topic to request the evaluation of crash dump. It usually happens after 15 or 30 minutes playing without problem and not in all games. My computer is new, about 1 month.
I am Brazilian and I used google translator to translate some of the files generated by sf diagnostics. Were partially translated (I kept the original files created in my native language Portuguese Brazil too.)
I've got a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 17r special edition) for 1 week now, and last night I've been playing Devil May Cry and I started noticing lag. Normally, I would play Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 6 on highest settings with google chrome and utorrent running in the background and it would not lag.
I have currently 2 XBOX games installed on my windows 8 pro (Jet pack joy ride and shuffle party) and both are not working when I start these games splash screen gets displayed and then a black screen in case of shuffle party and a white screen in case of jet pack joy ride then they go to suspended state.
When i installed JPJR my XBOX account was not created and when i created that then i installed shuf. par. but both are not working.
I was trying to install Star Trek Elite Force and when I tried to it said that this app is incompatible with your PC. I saw one post that was regarding about running this game in Win7 but I have Windows 8. It says that you have to run it in Win2000 compatibility mode but I don't see it in Windows 8.
My specs-
Windows 8 Intel Core i5-3210M clocked @ 2.5GHz with turbo boost up to 3.1GHz Intel 4000 with up to 1760mb dynamic video memory 8GB DDR3 RAM 1 Terabyte HDD
Updated to Win 8.1 and just started having this issue. Will launch a game and it will minimize right away and everytime I click to open it it will minimize right back down.
I am having some problems with 3 years old PC. Only while playing games (Civ 5 - Heroes & Generals - Rise of nations) I suffer from freeze/crashes, PC doesn't show a BSOD, the mouse pointer works normally it doesn't freeze (until I try to alt+tab or alt+ctrl+del), and from my speakers I can hear looping sounds.
The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I try reinstalling windows, and the problem still exists. My BIOS, drivers* and OS are update, I perform a memtest for 6 hours and show no errors, I can run prime95 + kombustor and everything is fine, no temps problems, GPU never go over 68c and CPU at 58c, and no crashes.
DSIM commands show no errors neither.
*I tried latest NVIDIA drivers, and old ones, im actually using 334.89 version, and the problem persist.
Okay, this is the second time with a different game this is happening, at very specific points in the game, My Laptop's screen blacks out and goes off, the computer stays on with lights and stuff but the screen just stays off like when you put off a pc but the fans keep running, I then have to forcefully power my pc off to put off the entire system.
I don't think this has anything to do with my Laptop's temperature as I've just had the vents and heat sinks ventilated recently, also cause the laptop goes off at just one scene in a particular mission in both games, Assassins Creed and Far Cry 3.
I don't think its my PC's specs either cause I went through the requirements of these games before getting them. I've not been able to go past the stages in the game where my PC goes off.
My Laptop's specs: HP Envy M6-1105DX : AMD A10-4600M 2.3GHz, 6GB RAM, Windows 8, 64-bit.
It's been happening for awhile now since windows 7 through to windows 8 and i'm not sure why but it usually happens when i play games even with lowest settings, whenever it freezes it makes me have to force shut down manually.
System Specs : Windows 8 Pro With Media Centre 4 GB DDR2 RAM Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 ATI Radeon HD 4600
ALT-TAB is not working when I am playing online games (Crossfire -develop by SmileGate/Neowiz) and Steam-DOTA2. I just experience it when I upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Is there a workaround on this? I don't want to go back to Windows 7 or 8
I have a question regarding PC gaming, since I realy dont know as much as I would like to.
My question is what role does my CPU play in gaming? Is it a big thing? I always thought that having a strong, powerful graphics card was more important that a powerful CPU.
Is there a particular thing that the CPU does in PC gaming that makes having a strong one essential?
First let me say, I rarely leave my 8.1 system running all night as I generally switch off before bed.
On the FEW occasions I leave the system running all night I always get the "Your computer is low on memory" warning.
For instance, yesterday my software RAID mirror was "Re-synchronizing" and I wanted it to complete syncing so I left it running. NOTHING was running except Disk Manager. I closed down everything else. No browser, no Skype, no directory utility, no paint, no uTorrent....
Sure enough when I woke up this morning there it was....
A few days ago I wanted a couple of torrents to keep downloading so I kept the desktop running. Again NOTHING else was running and in the morning there it was....
I have 16Gb of memory and my pagefile.sys is 42Gb. My OS disc is a 250Gb SSD. I have set my system to hibernate after 5 hours idle. I have set the screen/display to sleep after 30 minutes.
The system isn't asleep when I wake as moving the mouse immediately brings the display back on line. Checking Task Manager shows NO memory hogs.
What I suspect is after 5 hours the hibernation process denies access to memory requests or something?
The strange thing is millions of people on 8.1 must leave their systems running all night but I have seen no mention of this behaviour.
After a couple of weeks using 8.1 (x86) and after Windows 7 Ultimate (x86), I have come to the conclusion that it is a much lighter and faster OS than 7. Mafia 1 for instance runs on full specs without a single hiccup no matter what. I know it's an old game but it's also very demanding, especially on my system which is not exactly up to date. I can also play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on medium settings very well indeed, and that's a demanding game on the system. GT Legends by Simbin is a reasonably demanding game especially on full graphics options and with a full grid of cars and it's running well on Windows 8.1. My onboard Intel graphics adapter is coping a lot better with these games than it did on Windows 7 Ultimate. I had to find a Windows 8 driver for it (I've found it on here) then all my games started to run very well considering my old laptop specs.
