I like to use the Alt+f4 key for closing various windows.It used to work fine until suddenly the alt+f4 key just doesnt do anything in the browser window and in folders its opens the preview pane.How do i set it up to close the current window as it was always?
View 2 Repliesmy windows file viewer has an annoying bug. When I double click a folder it opens in a new tab, every time. I've tried going to >view>options>change folder and search options but it says that they should open in the same window.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNeither the start screen nor the search feature within Explorer will return any results if the files I want to look for are on my secondary HDD. This is a bit of a problem as all of my documents, pictures, videos, downloads etc are on this secondary drive.
I can even go into the documents library and search using Explorer, and it still won't find anything that I search for.
my computer is overclocked with software set to run using the Task Scheduler. It is set to run at startup, but with "fast startup", the program doesn't launch. How can I make this overclock program run at startup without sacrificing "fast startup".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've created a Windows 8.1 partition separate to the original Windows 7 install. The manufacturer, Acer says the model is supported for the Win 8 upgrade. I did it on a second partition and simply installed the W8 drivers from their website. It uses Dolby Digital Audio V4. It sounds poor on Win 8 though, on the occasion that I boot back into Win 7 the difference is like night and day. Any icons in the try, apps etc. appear to be properly installed and loaded in Win 8 yet the audio quality from the speaker and with a headset is still degraded.

I've installed Win 8 64bit on my Acer Aspire 8930g laptop, in January. Till recently, the 5.1 sound was ok. A couple of weeka ago, the central speaker is silent, the front left & right speakers are very low, the two back speakers and the sub are ok. I tried un-install and re-intall all audio drivers (Realtek HD audio & Nvidia digital audio) but the problem remains.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to play online games with my friends and talk on skype, calls would get dropped and I would lag really hard in the game. I have tried clicking on troubleshoot problems but I would always get resetting adapter and it would say fixed network adapter and access point but that did not work at all. My brother who also has the same laptop as me does not have this issue I would look at his bars and its full and tried checking his connection properties and such but they were similar to mine.

2) after linking to page - the back button just displays a blank screen
(Now I'm not sure if this is in configuration - but it never worked like that before -- I got returned to my Google search query). screenshots shown.
When I open it and log in it doesn't I'm online. I can't even send IM mesages, I only see gray circle on the right side spining. Sometimes when I restart it It all works. But most of the time it doesn't I tried changing port number, reinstaling skype etc. Also skype.exe can't be killed in TM. I get info that Acess is denied.
I use windows 8 and latest version of skype.
Laptop Keyboard and Mouse is not working properly now. Last time this occurred which was about 3 months ago, I reset-ed Windows 8 and it was all working again. When this occurs, in both incidents, I can't go to bios, can't enter password to login, can't open on-screen keyboard(except sometimes), and even if I get open, using it is same as using the keyboard.
Mouse errors: LMB changes to Select all thing so I can't click anything. This issue is same at least most of the time.
Keyboard errors: This varies a lot from time to time.
I reset-ed OS this time too and the problem still exists unlike before.
Ex: I'm not sure this key is this or not, but it was I think Z is ctrl, x is alt, a don't work, ctrl, alt, shift don't work. Then, keyboard itself keep on pressing space or opening windows support.
And then I updated my BIOS and now the problem was a little bit solved or I think it would be best to say the problem changed bit.
Now z,x,a, spacebar, ctrl, alt, shift, everything working,except ! and maybe a few other keys, but now It keeps pressing caps lock, shift and opening up windows support.
Then I restarted, and now I pressed F2(BIOS) and it let me in. I tried changing the boot priorty order but those keys F5/F6 aren't working, so I restarted, now again I can't press F2.
And sometimes laptop beeps for some reason on booting up.
There are no keyboard drivers except the default one and sticky and filter are all off.

Here's the problem: For as long as I have used windows, I can select multiple files by pressing ctrl-left mouse button. If I want to select multiple consecutive files, I move my cursor down to the last file in the list and press shift-left mouse button. If I want to select multiple files that are not listed consecutively, I move my cursor along the list of files and press ctrl-left mouse button to select each individual file.
This does not work for me any longer and I do not know why.
I do not have Click-lock on.
Often I will press ctrl-left mouse click and the file will not select. When I move my mouse away from the file I've selected, it will UN-select. If I continue to press the CTRL key while attempting to select another file and float my mouse cursor down the list of files to select ONE single file further in the list, ALL the files in between the first file I click and the final file will become selected.
Moving the mouse cursor carefully and steadily to select individual files yields varied results; sometimes I can select individual files; sometimes, I can click multiple times to select an additional file and the file will not become selected. More often than not, I will select several files and earlier files will become unselected.
I have been a Windows user since version 3.1 and this has never happened to me. I have been a Windows 8.1 user for over a year now and this is a new wrinkle. I have done system restore multiple times and it has not solved the problem. I have uninstalled Intellipoint/Microsoft Keyboard & Mouse center and reinstalled and the problem has not solved. I have checked every setting for my mouse in the mouse center and cannot see a setting that imposes this feature.
Changing folder options to Double-click to open an item (single click to select) solves the problem. I am able to navigate and organize my files the way I always have. Only happens when single-click feature is enabled. Please note: I have been using the single-click select feature since Windows XP.
Since upgrading to Windows 8 (from 7) a week ago my Outlook 2010 email has been faulty. It keeps stopping emails coming in or out and I have to (daily) run a 'repair' to get it to work. I contacted my ISP (Virgin) and they said that Outlook doesn't work with Windows 8 and said I should use Live. However, I then added my accounts to Live but it wouldn't accept all of them, and I found the interface very hard to use. Outlook contains all my business folders and email records for my business so I need it to work. It seems to accept my IMAP email account but not the main accounts with my ISP.
My HP desktop machine is less than a year old and has plenty of memory. But also, in general the machine is slower and won't restart (I have to force shut down).
In my HP Compaq Presario V3000 Laptop with Windows 8.1(32 bit) version, when I play a video such as Youtube, I do not receive any audio although video is played.But Device manager shows the message for 'Sound audio contoller' as 'HD audio driver working properly'. But if I disable Sound/Video Controller and then enable it, the audio comes back properly. But my problem is that every time I open the computer, I have to do this exercise if I wish to watch aan audio/video bit!
View 4 Replies View Relatedmy computer has suddenly starting acting up:- I cannot enter my password due to no response via the keyboard I am using a MS Comfort 500 keyboard & mouse but this isn't the main problem as if I can open up the computer (and I can now and then) the cursor is very jerky and unresponsive, but now things have got a whole lot worse the computer is starting up in repair mode (didn't know this existed) but cannot repair itself so gives me the options of refreshing or resetting, now resetting seems a bit drastic as although I have my files on external discs and in the cloud I have never done a restore point and it seems as though a disc my have failed but as I cannot get into the computer I have no way of doing any other checks it could have been a virus that caused the problem, wish I had created restore point, if I do a reset I will loose all the programs on the c drive.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've done a fresh install of 8.1 RT and all appears to be well except if I shut down.
If I select restart it restarts fine.
However if I select Shutdown, I get the woindows shreen telling me it's shutting down, then the monitor goes blank, but the PC is going indefinitely (I've given it 15 mins)
If I press the reset button on the PC case it reboots into windows without any "windows didn't shut down" type messages during bootup.
However if I check the event log, it does say

I am having trouble with the computer shutting down once in awhile. The fans and stuff stay running but the monitor shuts off. I have to press and hold the power button for it to shut off. I know this is how it shuts down for 8 but i wait for 5 minutes and it is still running.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new laptop which has windows 8 installed on it and at times when I put it into sleep mode the screen goes off but the computer is still running and I have to use the power button to turn it off(Which I don't really like to do). When I turn it off the same thing happens and sometimes when I'm lucky it will give me an error message .I have download all of the updates for windows 8 which did not solve it and I disabled fast bootup which didn't either I am just wondering if I download 8.1 will it fix it although I installed 8.1 on another laptop and the same thing happened and then I installed just 8 which gave me the same result.

I cannot restart or shout down my computer anymore. When i press call the shoutdown or restart i just log off, and nothing more happens.
Even when i put my computer in sleep by closing the lid, it turns down for a few seconds, and then it turn on again.
Even more I can restart from windows only from some application (like asus update, windows update).
I have no problem in booting, restarting or shout down with linux.
how to get Windows 8 running properly on a MacBook Pro (or in general any Mac that supports BootCamp).
Everything runs kind of smoothly, except since Apple doesn't "Officially Support" Windows 8, out of the gate I wasn't able to get a few things working. Unfortunately, the driver disc that Apple provides to you doesn't install officially because I was "not running Windows 7."

I am using windows 8 pro x64 with an asus P8P67 LE motherboard and have a 5.1 sound system. I installed win 8 fresh and the audio was working fine. One time when I booted up, the audio sounded off. The sound was only coming out of the front left speaker. I did the speaker test within win 8 and the realtek menu. The front right speaker is being detected as the subwoofer and the rest are fine. It's the only speaker not working properly so it's like having two subs. I tried setting it to stereo, 2.1, speaker fill, ect... with the same results. I have not messed with wiring or software. Sometimes it would go back to normal but then do it again randomly. In the end, I reinstalled win 8 and it worked fine. Then suddenly, it happened again. The only difference this time is that it will not go back to normal by itself. It seems to be stuck on this "setting". I did do some research but I guess I didn't do it well enough because I could not find an answer that would work. Again, it worked fine in win 7 and sometimes in Windows 8. I have checked the wires to make sure nothing has changed and that they are connected well and they are fine. I tried changing the speaker settings and speaker fill but with no results. I don't know what else to try.
View 3 Replies View RelatedLast night I downloaded the font Roboto (used by Google for their Android UI) and all of the weights installed properly, except for the Regular and Regular Italic weights. Trying to re-install the weights prompts a query if I want to replace them. Under the Control Panel's Fonts area, there are two ghost-like icons that would indicate the presence of the missing weights, and when I check for the fonts using "localhostc$WindowsFonts" I see them there (all copies). Furthermore, despite being the Administrator of my computer, I can't seem to delete them from this area. All my hidden files are turned on, so I'm not sure what else to do.

My Windows 8 doesn't start up properly. I get a black screen when i start the os and i can only move the cursor. I've upgraded all the drivers and the bios. If i turn fast start up off everything works just fine. I wouldn't like to turn off the fast start up forever.

I've chosen system recovery in advanced options. Everything would be fine, if it would keep same settings before the problem occurred. I spent a lot of time getting settings right. And that would be okay, if it happened once. But it happened second time in period of two weeks. I don't want that error happens again.

I've bought a laptop recently, there were some soft (Win 8 and apps) installed. I installed a game and it was running very bad, I couldn't believe such a new device can't run an old game. I've been trying everything, uninstalling drivers, installing drivers from your forum's links (leshcatlabs - I upgraded CCC from 9.0 to 13.0, w/o effect), restarting system (deleting everything that was there and installing brand new copy of windows 8). I don't know where the problem lies, I guess it's a driver thing, but who knows. The laptop doesn't overheat, because I was checking it by a program for that.
The games lag and freeze, League of legends (2009) freezes when there are more action on the screen, the same with Unreal Tournament 2004, FPS number is very low, I could play properly only alone in the game. Dota 2 surprisingly runs on high details but it still lags while in a fight.
I'm ready to restart Windows again and install the programs you say.

Last night my laptop (lenovo z400 ideapad, running windows 8 - i never updated to 8.1) went to a blue screen with a "kernel data inpage error" message. Tried to boot it back up, but once i entered my password and logged in, the screen looked wrong. The windows homepage had no apps and the background pattern was not the one i normally had. I couldn't click on anything, so i shut it back down and went to sleep. This morning, i turned it back on, and this time it looked normal when i logged in. However, after about a minute, it froze and would not unfreeze. Thats where i am now. I can open the computer in safe mode and it works fine, and through that i can access the event viewer and command prompt, etc. I did a disc repair, no luck, and a system restore failed. Like i said, computer only works in safe mode, so i dont know if I'll be able to do the right procedure to upload the dump file from the BSOD, but i can try. Lots of interesting things in the event viewer. I'm on my phone but i can sample them later.

Tried different browsers
Tried to use OpenDNS and the google one
Connecting via cable to the router
System File checker
Disabled firewall and antivirus
But still hasn't solved the problem.
