I'm not too knowledgeable about computers, but want to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7. PC Pitstop recommends upgrading to Windows 7 (64 bit), even if you have 32 bit on your computer now. What should I do? I don't think my Dell E620 has enough memory to do this.

Looking for a way to save some money, I found a person who is offering these kits, which he claims will work on any PC, is that true? Would this kit differ in what it has versus a copy directly from MS, other than the fact that it is x64 only? Would the key from this kit work to install from my MS DVDs?

I have received the Dell Windows 7 upgrade. It comes with two disks, Windows 7 upgrade and Upgrade Assistant.
My question is this, after the upgrade to Windows 7 what becomes of RECOVERY (D, is it modified? Will the recovery recover the laptop to Vista or Windows 7?

trying to install windows 7 and I get a message telling me that I need to contact dell to get an OEM upgrade...what does this mean?! Also I was under the impression that I could upgrade to windows 7 and not completely gut my laptop and loose all my programmes etc.. but read on a few forums that I'll have to reinstall Microsoft word among other things...is this true? I wanted a 64 bit OS, so I requested & received a 64 bit version of Vista from Dell. My Windows 7 upgrade discs arrived from Dell, but they're for 32 bit Windows 7 (based on my original configuration) and not 64 bit. I've been told that I need to custom install Win 7 and format the partition that has the 64 bit version so that I don't lose my "free upgrade" status. Does that sound right?
SEcondly, is there another way around this? I have some upgrade discs from other systems, can I use those & just enter the product key from my 32-bit Dell discs?

But then the screen with the cursor where you should be able to select the keyboard language and the setup screen doesn't appear.All I get is a black screen with the cursor I can move.Also the install failed out the first time due to amd manager installed, so I uninstalled it and now every time I try to boot back to vista it says some amdsata.sys error message.

Despite having made several attempts, I've been unable to complete a Windows 7 installation.
At my first attempt the compatibility check reported several issues all but one of which I was able to fix, but this last one refuses to go away. The report says I have an out-of-date driver for the AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller. I have run windows update several times and each time been told that the driver is up to date, so I am at a loss as to what to do next.

In the upgrade of an old Dell 4500S for a friend (whose monitor died, so we started from there) I upgraded the 256MB of memory with 2GB, and upgraded the 20GB hard drive with a 60GB version. The old dead monitor was replaced by a Samsung S20B300B 20" 16x9 LCD whose native resolution is 1600x900. However the old onboard Intel i845g GPU graphics chip in the 4500S (82845G) is supported by old drivers that do not have a 1600x900 resolution option. There is one pretty close rectangular resolution available, 1280x768 but it's a bit cartoonish.
