I'm not too knowledgeable about computers, but want to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7. PC Pitstop recommends upgrading to Windows 7 (64 bit), even if you have 32 bit on your computer now. What should I do? I don't think my Dell E620 has enough memory to do this.
Looking for a way to save some money, I found a person who is offering these kits, which he claims will work on any PC, is that true? Would this kit differ in what it has versus a copy directly from MS, other than the fact that it is x64 only? Would the key from this kit work to install from my MS DVDs?
Can't seem to get a definitive answer to this so here goes. I have a Dell laptop with Vista preinstalled and recovery disks. It has two original partitions OS(C and RECOVERY(D, I have added a third for all my data, Data(F.
I have received the Dell Windows 7 upgrade. It comes with two disks, Windows 7 upgrade and Upgrade Assistant.
My question is this, after the upgrade to Windows 7 what becomes of RECOVERY (D, is it modified? Will the recovery recover the laptop to Vista or Windows 7?
I have my upgrade disk from dell recently as my sis brought a new lappy. But the problem is she is not interested in upgrading. Can i upgrade my other com instead of the dell one? And my com is running win xp. Can i change the OS and upgrade it?
When dell send the disk it comes with a "UPGRADE ASSISTANT" DVD!!!
trying to install windows 7 and I get a message telling me that I need to contact dell to get an OEM upgrade...what does this mean?! Also I was under the impression that I could upgrade to windows 7 and not completely gut my laptop and loose all my programmes etc.. but read on a few forums that I'll have to reinstall Microsoft word among other things...is this true? Below is the technical part of the error message I got.
I seem to have gotten myself into a problem. I bought a computer with Vista 32 bit Home Premium installed. I wanted a 64 bit OS, so I requested & received a 64 bit version of Vista from Dell. My Windows 7 upgrade discs arrived from Dell, but they're for 32 bit Windows 7 (based on my original configuration) and not 64 bit. I've been told that I need to custom install Win 7 and format the partition that has the 64 bit version so that I don't lose my "free upgrade" status. Does that sound right?
SEcondly, is there another way around this? I have some upgrade discs from other systems, can I use those & just enter the product key from my 32-bit Dell discs?
I have a dell computer with win xp on it. I would like to know if I could install it on my custom and then buy an upgrade to win 7. I have the product key for the dell and the cd's. First I want to know if I can install that cd on my custom then upgrade my pc to windows 7 using the upgrade disk. Just to clarify I want to install windows 7 on my pc. I have another pc that has xp. It is a dell and has all cds. I want to use the dell cd so I can use an upgrade windows 7 disk.
I updated my Dell to Windows 7 last night and I realized that I don't have any sound drivers or cards. I have been Googling for about 3 hours now without any luck.
I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and I'm so tempted to go back to Vista...if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!
I have the Dell Studio 1737. Since I've upgraded to Windows 7...my CD/DVD driver barely works, the finger reader doesn't work, webcam doesn't work...and now I can't view video files...the web goes to 'not responding'. I have updated my Flash, that did nothing.
I have a Dell Dimensions 2400 purchased in 2005. Can I install Windows 7? The thing is running very slow and I was wondering if it would be better to do a clean install of Windows 7 or just reinstall windows xp
I have a Vista SP2 laptop that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 7. However when I pop in the disk and boot to the disk, the files load. But then the screen with the cursor where you should be able to select the keyboard language and the setup screen doesn't appear. All I get is a black screen with the cursor I can move. Also the install failed out the first time due to amd manager installed, so I uninstalled it and now every time I try to boot back to vista it says some amdsata.sys error message.
I am thinking of buying a laptop through dell and get the windows 7 upgrade kit sent at a later date. But I only want to do this if it will allow me a clean install, as I never do in place upgrades for obvious reasons. Does anybody know if Dell upgrade kit allows this?
(I know... I know... I should just wait... but I have time constraints beyond my control!)
Despite having made several attempts, I've been unable to complete a Windows 7 installation.
At my first attempt the compatibility check reported several issues all but one of which I was able to fix, but this last one refuses to go away. The report says I have an out-of-date driver for the AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller. I have run windows update several times and each time been told that the driver is up to date, so I am at a loss as to what to do next.
I am using a Dell Inspiron 1721 running Vista Home Premium, and a Windows 7 Upgrade CD.
I bought two dell laptops with a free Windows 7 upgrade available. I have upgrade the first machine, but had to pay for a disc to be delivered and it took 2-3 weeks. Can I use the upgrade disc from the first machine to upgrade the second machine, or will I have licensing problems?
I have a standard Dell 1545 Inspiron laptop running vista with Intel duo core processor and 4gb ram. Is it a straightforward process to upgrade to windows seven? If I get the windows seven installation disc can I do a clean install or are there any Dell bits and pieces to stop me doing this? Will I need any other drivers etc after the install?
Will I gain much in performance by upgrading RAM in my Dell Optiplex GX280 small desktop from 2 GB (2x 1GB DIMMs) to 3 GB (3x 1GB DIMMs)? I understand the 32-bit OS will not recognize >3GB so that's why I'm not shooting for 4GB (the physical maximum of this machine). The machne runs Win7 32-bit Home Premium OS and is rather slow. The alternative is to jump to a new machine, probably a i5 processor laptop (trying to delay that expense, if practical).
I am running a Dell 9300 with Win 7 and I have purchased 2x1GB Crucial RAM that is sold as an upgrade package for the Dell 9300 (completely compatible.) I insert the RAM, computer recognizes it and boots to Win 7 logo at startup. There is hangs and does not boot.
Since Free windows upgrade is for the systems purchased after June 26 i am not getting a upgrade.
I am from INDIA. I contacted Dell Customer Service here. They said i cannot purchase it from them also. Actually they had very less information about Windows 7. All they just said is that since my system is bought before June 26 i am not eligible. They had no further information about it.
I have Two Questions
Q1. Why Can't i purchase OEM version of windows 7 from DELL?
Q2.Since my laptop is shipped with OEM version of WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32 BIT SP1, if i purchase a WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM UPGRADE PACK from Microsoft / Amazon etc,.
Can i install it on my machine ??
Can i install WINDOWS 7 by formatting C Drive or should it be installed over Vista ??
In the upgrade of an old Dell 4500S for a friend (whose monitor died, so we started from there) I upgraded the 256MB of memory with 2GB, and upgraded the 20GB hard drive with a 60GB version. The old dead monitor was replaced by a Samsung S20B300B 20" 16x9 LCD whose native resolution is 1600x900. However the old onboard Intel i845g GPU graphics chip in the 4500S (82845G) is supported by old drivers that do not have a 1600x900 resolution option. There is one pretty close rectangular resolution available, 1280x768 but it's a bit cartoonish.
I would like to load Windows 7 Home Premium onto my Dell Dimension 5000 that is running XP but my c drive wont let things start. I have backed everything up followed the instructions but stop at part 1 of the 3 part install.
I have a Dell desktop with windows vista 32 bit on it but only have a 'reinstallation' disk. Is there a way to install windows 7 64 bit upgrade (yes, hardware will support the 64 bit) even though I only have the 'reinstallation' disk....or am I hosed and will have to buy the full install version of Windows 7?
I recently bought an HP laptop, and I received a windows 7 upgrade kit. I was wondering if I could use the code on the COA that was included to install on my dell computer?
I had win7 installed on dell dimension E520 which worked fine. Hard drive crashed replaced with Seagate Baracuda 2terabyte, and now win 7 goes thru all install process only to end up saying setup can not be installed on this computer. No reason, no clues, nothing. I've done this 3 times with same results.
I have a Dell Dimension 5150 which runs XP Home and is 3 years old. I pre-ordered Windows 7 but the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor says my onboard graphics adapter won't support the Windows Aero User Interface. I don't play games on my PC but I would like all the fancy visual features of Windows 7. How do I go about choosing a graphics card that will do the job for me?
I have a Dell Dimension 9200 and have upgraded to Window 7 32bit. When I had Vista install, 4 GB of ram was the max the system would recognise. Now that I am Windows 7 can I up grade my ram over 4 GB?
