Import Vista Mail Boxes To Win7

I read how to import vista mail contacts to windows 7 (using windows Live), but how do you import(?) vista mailboxes (sent, deleted, saved, etc)?? Also, can you continue to have a microsoft news reader in windows 7 and can one import those also in some fashion?

Mail To Windows Live Mail - Import Incomplete
I have - quite stupidly, as I now think - installed Windows Seven on my old Vista on my Laptop without thinking about the Mail program at all. That is: neither did I make a backup nor did I export contact lists from Windows Mail, etc.

I was, however, able to import most of the stuff from Windows Mail into Windows Live Mail anyway. I took ownership of both Windows Mail folders (in C:Program Files and C:Program Files(x86) including subs 'n files, and tried the import function in Windows Live Mail - three times, I think.

I can't really tell whether or not all my messages are there, yet I can say for sure that what I find in the Storage Folders section in Windows Live Mail reproduces only a part of the filing system I had established in Windows Mail. That is to say: A lot of the folders I used to have in Windows Mail are simply missing. Are the messages that used to be in there missing, too? No idea so far... they might be in the Inbox or somewhere else.

To be sure, I have everything, that is: all my messages, on my webmail-account. Yet it took me forever to work out my huge filing system (including all the message rules, etc.) in Windows Mail which allows me to have more folders than my webmail account that is for some reason limited to 258 folders. So even although I know that in the end I do have all the messages on my webmail, I would just hate to have to do all that work again! Thus I'd just love to "simply" get my Webmail stuff imported as it was.

Any ideas what I might have done wrong? ...what I could do to retrieve the missing folders?

Alternatively: Is there any way to "simply" (I know what you're thinking...) reactivate Windows Mail in Windows 7 so that I can start over by properly exporting everything from there?

I have found some related topics but did not see anyone having this particular problem. If I simply overlooked it, sorry! At any rate: I'd appreciate any help you can offer!

Multiple Win7 Boxes And Effects On Sleep / Hibernation
I'm posting about an "odd" behavior in Windows 7 boxes when it comes to sleep/hibernation while other Windows 7 boxes are joined to the same homegroup.  The short of it:  Two Windows 7 boxes act like a tween slumber party keeping eachother up indefineatly and never allowing sleep despite sharing/hibernation settings. To be clear:Windows 7 box #1 is my "main horsepower, and a beast on resources and power" ... so I'm a big fan of P-State reduced cycles, sleep, and hibernation modes to save power when noone is around.

To take it a step further, I checked the BIOS to ensure Away Mode was not enabled as well as the Device Manager to ensure no Awaymode drivers were loaded (for those not aware, its a "feature" that allows a box to turn off non-essential items like video cards so it apears shutdown while drives and core services continue to run so it can share media). Now this box _is_ a part of a Homegroup, however it doesn't share _any_ files, folders, printers, media, or antyhign else.  Device streaming is disabled, and the homegroup is used SOLEY for retrieving off of remote shares as needed.

So there should be no reason the box doesn't shutdown after a given amount of inactivity.  Which, under normal circumstances, is exactlywhat happens.Unless my Windows 7 laptop is there.  Then "slumber party mode" begins.By that I mean: the moment my Windows 7 laptop comes out of hibernation (I open the lid and turn it on) my main Win7 box boots along with it.  My Beast of a Win 7 box that shares nothing wakes it right up.  The paculiar thing is that my Vista box won't wake it ... though admitedly I've nto tried pinging the unit to see if it can force it up.

But Windows 7.... well it wakes its homegroup buddy right up every time.Further, once the two machines are up and running, neihter of them will ever go to sleep.  Ever.  No amount of inactivity will do this.  If I force one to go to sleep it goes through the cycle complete with the spinning down of disks then fires right back up the moment the cycle is done, it's chatty partner having something juicy to share I'm sure.  I call this the "Zach Effron Effect" ... as any parent with a girl of the rght age knows exactly what I'm talking about.  Some of you may prefer the "Twilight" effect .... but you get my point.

Now, I have discovered that by default Windows 7 sets "allow this device to wake the computer" on the network card, and clearing this check box will let the computer go to sleep... but only if i manually tell it to.  No amount of waiting will allow either box ever sleep/hibernate with the two are running together.  I'm guessing it has somethign to do with the homegroup (as no other device will wake the machine) but honestly it needs further testing.Next I'm going to set magic packet only and see how insistent these machines are about chatting it up.

Anyway:  something to report, as I'm certain the homegroup feature will be quickly embrassed for easy file/printer shareing but if no box will ever go to sleep once joined it could be annoying and easier to just use the old workgroup model.EDIT:  I type really poorly ... needed to fix some major typos.

Use VISTA Windows Mail In Win7
a little tip here as I HATE webmail based type of email clients. I was quite happy with Outlook express and Windows mail.

This tip works on both X-86 and x-64 versions.

1) Take ownership of the windows mail folder (it's in program files or program files (x86) depending which version of W7 you are running.

2) delete contents of the folder.

3) copy your old VISTA windows mail folder to the windows mail folder on W7

4) make a shortcut link to winmail.exe

5) set up your accounts like on Vista / Outlook express in XP

6) enjoy.

Can't Import Messages Into Windows Mail
I have had Windows Mail up and running since day one of installing Windows 7 but I just tried to import our messages(Inbox, Sent, Draftes ect...) into it but it doesn't see the files in the saved folders. All files and folders were succesfully saved via Export Messages in Vista's Windows Mail. I also tried finding the folders manually within Windows Mail in Windows 7 thinking I could just copy and past the messages into the files but couldn't find them(thought like vista it would be in the hidden "Application Data" folder but it was not...

Unable To Import - Windows Live Mail
Is it just me or are you not able to import accounts into Live Mail. I have just done a fresh install for Win 7 RTM (was on RC) and I exported my mail accounts beforehand using Live Mail using the export option from the menu. However, upon reinstalling there is no import options for accounts only Messages?? Why have an export option without having an import option... Is there a way around this.

Language Packs For W7 - Import From VISTA
Anybody know if during the RC other language packs will be available.

If not could I "Poodlefake" or Backport the language packs from the VISTA system.

I'd like to try the Icelandic pack so some of our "Normal" i.e non technical users back home can check / try Windows 7.

(Of course they all speak excellent English -- like most Scandanavian countries English is a mandatory language in Schools here and even as adults around 90% here speak it fluently but it would be nice to test Windows 7 in a "Working environment" away from the IT testing areas to see how it performs in day to day work. (Maybe not 100% mission critical stuff but for reasonably robust office situations).

How To Import Windows Mail Into Windows Live ?
I have tried to import my Vista Windows mail box into Windows 7 Livemail on the 4 betas that have been available on the net. It has been afailure each time. At least not the way I would expect.I exported the messages - sent, draft, deleted, inbox - to an USBdevice.

I then imported from the USB device into Windows Live mail. Toexport 30,000 messages takes about 3 hours. When the import to Livemail, say the sent items, the new sent items are now imported into afolder 3 levels down, Same for deleted items, etc, Why?

Dynamic Volume Failed Upon Import To Win7
I had an existing, healthy and fully functional raid 5 dynamic volume. As I understand Windows 7 supports RAID 5, I booted up Windows 7.It sees all the drives and the volume, I run the foreign import wizard, no errors. But my array immediately goes to "failed", even though it reports all drives online and the array was fully operational plugged into the same controller less than 5 minutes ago.

I attempted to import them back into the orignal OS but it warns me about missing disks and I may lose data if I import. So I stopped there.I've loved Windows 7 from the day I loaded the beta's.But this is a simple process I've done 100 times, why Windows 7 can't handle it without what appears to be destroying my array I don't know...And that's current status, anyone have any ideas?

Vista Windows Mail On Win 7
I used what I did read here to tranfer my vista windows mail on Windows 7 and it works great.

I just have one problem; when i move a mail to one of my folders (from inbox to something else) all the content seems to be missing and I get this error

Message cannot be found

The contents of this message cannot be found.

Did I forget something when moving my files? I didn't take ownership of nothing since it wasn't mentioned on the post i did read (just renamed old dir and moved all allong)

I also seem to get empty message without subject, sender or message body ... simply fully blank.

Any ideas (did get any of those on my vista for over a year)

Updated To Win7, Is My Mail Lost ?
1. I have already installed Windows 7 on top of the Vista system that previously on it.

2. The mail database was NOT on the boot "C" drive...it was on another partition (D drive.

3. After the successful conversion to Windows 7 home premium, I installed and started Win Live mail

4 Win live mail works ok.

5. From the Win live mail client running on the Windows 7 system, I tried to import the folders from the previous win mail client that I was using while running vista:

File->Import->Messages->Windows Mail->Next->WinMail database file name(D:Vista_Mail)->Next->All Folders->Next.

Import messages window appears and progress bar shows the folder names being processed and when it completes with NO error message, the followning appears in the win live mail import window:

"Import Complete"

"Your messages were imported in "Windows Mail format"".

I then clicked on "Finish"

There are 3 items on the win live mail pain labeled "imported folder", Imported folder (1)" and "Imported folder (2)".

Clicking on any of those 3 entries tells me "There are no items in this View"

I have tried to click on all of the items in the pane and see NO folders.

Removing Vista From Dual Boot - Vista On C: And Win7 On D:
I installed Windows7 as a dual boot on a Vista computer. Windows7 is the default operating system because it is listed first in the boot menu & launches automatically after 30 seconds. I realized that everything in Windows 7 is installing under D:etc. When I remove Vista & revert to one larger partition what will happen to all the installed programs that have a path to D:?

Won't the one drive become C:|? When installing Windows 7, I deliberately created a partition at the front of the drive & moved Vista to the 2nd partition assuming that whichever OS I booted into, it would use C: as the letter for their individual partition.
