Import Vista Mail Boxes To Win7

Jun 17, 2009

I read how to import vista mail contacts to windows 7 (using windows Live), but how do you import(?) vista mailboxes (sent, deleted, saved, etc)?? Also, can you continue to have a microsoft news reader in windows 7 and can one import those also in some fashion?

Use VISTA Windows Mail In Win7

Apr 30, 2009

a little tip here as I HATE webmail based type of email clients. I was quite happy with Outlook express and Windows mail.

This tip works on both X-86 and x-64 versions.

1) Take ownership of the windows mail folder (it's in program files or program files (x86) depending which version of W7 you are running.

2) delete contents of the folder.

3) copy your old VISTA windows mail folder to the windows mail folder on W7

4) make a shortcut link to winmail.exe

5) set up your accounts like on Vista / Outlook express in XP

6) enjoy.

Import Contacts From Windows Mail To Win Live Mail?

Jun 23, 2011

I have installed Win 7 and Win Live Mail.I have my old OS (Vista) on a secondary Hard Drive and have managed to import all the messages from the old drive. Now I want to obtain my list of contacts but cannot see how. I have trawled through this question via the search box search and the nearest answer is to export them first. Unfortunately I did not do that.

Mail To Windows Live Mail - Import Incomplete

Jan 6, 2010

I have - quite stupidly, as I now think - installed Windows Seven on my old Vista on my Laptop without thinking about the Mail program at all. That is: neither did I make a backup nor did I export contact lists from Windows Mail, etc.

I was, however, able to import most of the stuff from Windows Mail into Windows Live Mail anyway. I took ownership of both Windows Mail folders (in C:Program Files and C:Program Files(x86) including subs 'n files, and tried the import function in Windows Live Mail - three times, I think.

I can't really tell whether or not all my messages are there, yet I can say for sure that what I find in the Storage Folders section in Windows Live Mail reproduces only a part of the filing system I had established in Windows Mail. That is to say: A lot of the folders I used to have in Windows Mail are simply missing. Are the messages that used to be in there missing, too? No idea so far... they might be in the Inbox or somewhere else.

To be sure, I have everything, that is: all my messages, on my webmail-account. Yet it took me forever to work out my huge filing system (including all the message rules, etc.) in Windows Mail which allows me to have more folders than my webmail account that is for some reason limited to 258 folders. So even although I know that in the end I do have all the messages on my webmail, I would just hate to have to do all that work again! Thus I'd just love to "simply" get my Webmail stuff imported as it was.

Any ideas what I might have done wrong? ...what I could do to retrieve the missing folders?

Alternatively: Is there any way to "simply" (I know what you're thinking...) reactivate Windows Mail in Windows 7 so that I can start over by properly exporting everything from there?

I have found some related topics but did not see anyone having this particular problem. If I simply overlooked it, sorry! At any rate: I'd appreciate any help you can offer!

Unable To Import Mail From WLM?

Jul 1, 2010

First, I tried to get Outlook 2010 to see my .dbx folders from Outlook Express, it wouldn't.I then migrated my OE mail to WLM. I then tried to both export my mail to Outlook 2010 and Import from Outlook 2010. When importing, Outlook only saw the welcome mail message but didnt see anything else.I should add that I copied my old (2007 Outlook.pst) file into Outlook 2010's store directory. I am not sure if this is why I am unable to import my mail.

I can EXPORT the emails using using OE 6.... correct ?I read somewhere that if I used the Import function I woul dlose the date/time stamp on my old emails. Is that true ?To Import the OE emails thru Outlook and then back the pst up and move it to my new machine.... or us e the Export function on EO to try to export the email to Outlook ?And once I get the email and addresses into Outlook 2007 on my old machine, should I use a Memory stick to move them to the new machine or try to use the Windows Easy Transfer and an easy transfer cable (which I already have)?

I have had Windows Mail up and running since day one of installing Windows 7 but I just tried to import our messages(Inbox, Sent, Draftes ect...) into it but it doesn't see the files in the saved folders. All files and folders were succesfully saved via Export Messages in Vista's Windows Mail. I also tried finding the folders manually within Windows Mail in Windows 7 thinking I could just copy and past the messages into the files but couldn't find them(thought like vista it would be in the hidden "Application Data" folder but it was not...

Language Packs For W7 - Import From VISTA

May 6, 2009

Anybody know if during the RC other language packs will be available.

If not could I "Poodlefake" or Backport the language packs from the VISTA system.

I'd like to try the Icelandic pack so some of our "Normal" i.e non technical users back home can check / try Windows 7.

(Of course they all speak excellent English -- like most Scandanavian countries English is a mandatory language in Schools here and even as adults around 90% here speak it fluently but it would be nice to test Windows 7 in a "Working environment" away from the IT testing areas to see how it performs in day to day work. (Maybe not 100% mission critical stuff but for reasonably robust office situations).

Outlook Express To Live Mail Import

Jul 27, 2010

I am having problems importing a customer's address book from Outlook Express (XP) to Windows Live Mail (7). The addresses are being (mostly) split into each individual entry: some are just physical addresses, some email addresses, some phone numbers. I searched on your forum here and did not find the answer to the problem (indeed, I didn't see anyone else having it!) so I thought I'd ask to see if you've heard of anything like this.

Live Mail Import From Outlook Express?

Jan 31, 2013

I am migrating from an XP SP3 desktop to a Windows 7 64 bit machine. I use Outlook Express extensively on the XP machine, but have loaded Live Mail on the Windows 7 one as the recommended solution. I have experimented with the Import function in Live Mail using the .dbx files produced by OE held under 'Identities' but find that the Account field for each email (visible in Live Mail when the Account column is enabled) is not being populated in Live Mail. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? I note that any new emails I receive do populate the Account field, and I am confident that the Account information is present in the .dbx files.

Upgrade From X86 Vista To X64 Win7

Mar 16, 2009

I plan to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium x86 to Windows Seven Home Premium x64 when it is released. However, I only want to pay for an upgrade license, NOT a full price version.

My current version of Vista Home Premium is itself an upgrade from the original OEM copy of XP that came on my PC.

There are two ways as far as I can see:

i) Vista Home Premium x86 > Vista Home Premium x64 > Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (first stage done using an alternate media which I have just paid GBP 7 to be delivered shortly.

ii) Vista Home Premium x86 > Windows 7 Home Premium x86 > Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (first stage using an x86 retail upgrade, second stage using alternate media obtained after buying the retail x86 package).

However, looking at the following article:

Installation choices for 64-bit consumer versions of Windows Vista

it reveals that the steps are likely to be even more complex. For example, my option i) becomes:Uninstall Vista altogether Reinstall my original Dell x86 copy of XP Home Edition. Use the Vista alternative media to do an upgrade installation of Vista Home Premium x64. Then do an upgrade installation of Windows x64 on top of that. Extremely messy, and almost certain to end in tears!

It would be nice if MS took the opportunity to provide a straightforward upgrade path from x86 to x64 this time around; until we know the upgrade options no one knows for sure I guess. However, does anyone know or suspect an easier method?

For example, with my x86 copy of Vista Home Premium in situ, could I install a clean copy of Vista Home Premium x64 on another partition by booting from the DVD, and then just do an upgrade install of Windows 7 x64 when it become available?

Upgrading From XP To Win7 Via Vista

I've been told that it is possible to maintain all ones applications and settings when upgrading from XP to windows 7, if you first upgrade XP to Vista and then the Vista to Windows 7. Can anyone verify that? It would be more time consuming but given the amount of apps I have installed and need, it is the best choice in my view. I have an old Vista disc somewhere so there is no extra expense.

Updated To Win7, Is My Mail Lost ?

Nov 14, 2009

1. I have already installed Windows 7 on top of the Vista system that previously on it.

2. The mail database was NOT on the boot "C" drive...it was on another partition (D drive.

3. After the successful conversion to Windows 7 home premium, I installed and started Win Live mail

4 Win live mail works ok.

5. From the Win live mail client running on the Windows 7 system, I tried to import the folders from the previous win mail client that I was using while running vista:

File->Import->Messages->Windows Mail->Next->WinMail database file name(D:Vista_Mail)->Next->All Folders->Next.

Import messages window appears and progress bar shows the folder names being processed and when it completes with NO error message, the followning appears in the win live mail import window:

"Import Complete"

"Your messages were imported in "Windows Mail format"".

I then clicked on "Finish"

There are 3 items on the win live mail pain labeled "imported folder", Imported folder (1)" and "Imported folder (2)".

Clicking on any of those 3 entries tells me "There are no items in this View"

I have tried to click on all of the items in the pane and see NO folders.

Computer Hanging In Win7 - Vista

Jul 2, 2009

Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop with Vista on it had all sorts of issues. I cleaned them all up, but couldn't stop it from hanging. Seemingly random. Complete and permanent freeze requiring 10 seconds on the power button to restart.

Eventually decided to move to Win 7 RC. Formatted hard disk completely (with BootIt NG) before installing. Still having the same problem.

Memtest86 reports no issues (after 47 hours).

Chkdsk no errors.

sfc.exe no errors.

Hitachi dtf no errors (although it's a Toshiba drive).

All the regular spyware, adware, malware programs - no issues.

Interestingly, the problem doesn't seem to occur in Safe mode or when performing chkdsk, installing Windows, or anything else outside the main windows environment. This leads me to believe it's not hardware, but some system/software element common to both Vista and Windows 7?

I'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100. 1.73GHz, 1gig ram, 32 bit Win 7, version 6.1, build 7100.

Also, I'm currently trying to run a Windows Update from within Safe Mode With Networking, but it's not working. Should it be?
