I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP p6654y. I also have a Western Digital 160gb "My Book Essential Edition" external hard drive. I am trying to remove duplicate pictures that are in my Windows Pictures Library and also on the ext. hard drive (they have the same name on both drives). However when I find a common one and delete it from the Windows Picture Library, it also deletes it from the ext. hard drive! I did not expect the files to be 'related', and therefore any action I took on one file wouldn't affect the other.'

I distribute Microsoft Access developed software and the program relies on locating its backend .mdb file. I find on Windows 7 that even if I delete a file and it appears to be gone, it seems to be stored somewhere. I need to be able to get rid of the backend database file for good.

I am constantly running into issues trying to delete files--mostly .exes. It really interferes with many "autoupdate" programs like Steam and Origin. I have to use safemode to install updates... It also affects other things like compiling; I get occasional (essentially random) errors when the output file already exists and I want to overwrite it. I also can't delete the affected file(s) for a long time--often upwards of 1 minute. However, if I wait long enough, I can eventually delete the files. The error is always something like "you don't have permission blahblah." I have tried those unlocker programs, and while they can sometimes delete the file, an autoupdater (for example) can never actually write the new copy, even though I don't see the file in the directory.
I have tried running programs as administrator.I am using an administrator account.I have UAC dsabled.I am not running an antivirus or any program that should be interfering.I've tried changing folder permissions as per multiple guides I have read (some from this site).None of the above does anything..This problem has been plaguing me for almost 1 year. I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice in that time, and the problem exists from the get go. I have been using Windows 7 for over 2 years, but I never had this problem until my second to last installation. I don't know what changed.

I had it plugged into my laptop when I was blowing it off and putting a copy of XP Pro on it. When it said to delete the partition, I clicked on the USB drive on accident. Now plugging it into Win 7 computer, it wants to format it. Is there any way to get my files? I have one word document in particular that has been my life's work. I had not backed it up in over 2 months.

I just got a new computer. I had my User Account setup, had a password on it. I was making sure Windows was up to date, had to restart, then restarted on its own again(I'm assuming part of the update), and when it booted back up, it said my account has been disabled. Please contact your system administrator. I can sign in under Administrator, or Other User. The password I set up with my account doesn't work for Administrator. Is there a default password?

I won't go into details for my asinine behavior in running a cleanup that deleted many important files. I can't even recall the program I used because it was a while later that I realized the mess I'd created...Anyway I have been reinstalling/updating programs for several days and am left with two big glitches.First, I no longer can launch IE. I actually use Firefox but need IE for my work site. I have uninstalled it from Windows update several times and reinstalled without success. I then had the idea to download and install Explorer 8. I figured I could then upgrade. Unable to install that as it was apparently "unsupported"by Windows 7 (32 bit).

I recently installed Windows 7 to my SSD. Its only 64GB so I set Windows up so that the Users folder was on my seconday (X drive instead of my SSD, and setup a Program Files and Program Files (x86) on my secondary drive. I used this. I deleted the account I made when installing windows and accidenally clicked delete files as well. This deleted all of the data I had in my Users folder and many in Program Files and other places. I used Recuva, but now all of the deleted files are in one folder instead of their respective locations. Is there anything I can do aside from reinstalling and salvaging what I can and reinstalling all of my programs?

I have 64 bit Win 7 and originally installed HP 1230 drivers but my windows ended up installing three drivers for the same printer. I now have a new printer and no matter how many times I try I cannot delete the the original printer drivers, every time I start the computer again it re installs the HP 1230 drivers even though that printer is long gone and no longer attached to the computer. Any ideas on how I can get rid of them ?

I'm running a fairly new HP p6240f/Intel Core II Quad/2.50 Ghz/64bit with Windows 7 Home Premium. I've got a really strange issue.
When I delete a file from either the desktop or a windows explorer window the file "appears" to not go away, but if I double click I get an error that the file cannot be found. If I right click and then click on "Refresh", THEN it disappears.

I have a small problem tha I have been working on for 2 days, and I am stuck. I have a folder on my desktop that will not delete. The folder is empty, and windows recognizes it as a missing folder. I have attached the image of the error message. I have tried file shredder, chkdsk, defrag, and ran an elevated command prompt and deleted the 8.3 name, but still there.

I've just acquired a new laptop with Windows 7, and so last night used Easy Transfer to get all my documents onto the new machine. Today I've been trying to get everything in order. A few minutes ago I noticed that the documents folder contained a subfolder, also named documents, so I decided to get rid of the subfolder and place the files directly in the main documents folder. When I then deleted the subfolder, all my documents disappeared (almost 9 gigabytes). They were not in the bin, and I could not redo the deletion.Luckily I see they can be found under C:/ User/ Documents, but I cannot seem to be able to copy them to replace them in the Documents

My recycle bin does no longer retain deleted files and every time I delete a file it gives the warning that the file will be permanently deleted. Custom size of the recycle bin is 16375 MB; the option: don't move files to the recycle bin, remove files immediately when deleted is unticked; the option: display delete confirmation is ticked. This malfunction started after I downloaded a set of Windows7 updates. In the recycle bin there are still 3 files I had deleted as usual before the updating. I tried to go back to a restore point made before the updating but all the same the recycle bin does not keep newly deleted files.

So my ie8 got buggy with its history, to solve this I went to Tools->internet options-> delete history. This solved the bugs. Now prior to my deletion, I went to C:->Users->{user name}->app data->local->Microsoft and copied the folder named History (60+ megs).I pasted it on my F: drive. Now I'm trying to repaste this info and...Nothing.I mean, the size of this folder changes from 0 to 60+ megs, but when I double click it only shows "today".

I decided a week ago to install Ubuntu 11.04 alongside my Windows 7, which as you know, created a new parition. As you also know, Ubuntu likes to use it's own boot manager. Well, I decided that I was going to download and install the Windows 8 Build 7955 (as I found on Windows 8 Forums) onto the partition that was occupied by Ubuntu.. so, I downloaded the image and then, in my disk management, deleted the entire parition that Ubuntu was installed on. I went to restart my computer to finish an AntiVirus update shortly thereafter, and got a message saying something along the lines of "Grub error; unknown filesystem." I attempted a repair with my disc and nothing worked.Right now, I am installing Windows 7 on the new parition in the hopes that I can get it working again, just to get at my files on the main parition. If not, I do have a SATA-to-USB adapter that I can use to manually extract the files onto another computer, and then just wide the drive entirely, but I'm really hoping I don't have to do that, as it would be SUCH a nuisance if I had to re-do EVERYTHING on my laptop. So, what I'm asking is, if the fresh install on the new partition doesn't work, is there any way to restore the original boot manager, or am I kinda dead in the water?

I recently got a program install package (ThumbsPlus, so reputable.) that will NOT install. Cerious support, BTW, is tragic, but at one point in this ongoing saga they suggested getting the MS Install CLeanup utility - ran that, and the original install error was then replaced with one about a registry key it apparently needs to open but can't. I located the offending key from the error message, but it can't be deleted (or opened). I have tried everything - given myself full permissions, added a new Admin account using the elevated command prompt and so on, as per another thread. I couldn't follow the MS information referred to in that thread.
how can I delete a squatter key that is determined to live in my registry?
