Can't Update Quicktime Player?
Mar 12, 2011
I get a notice that there are updates for Quicktime, so I tell it to go ahead and it always fails with an error that says Getlasterror 5:Today I decided to fix this so I did some research and found that it's a fairly common problem.I didn't find any really concise answer, but Microsoft said to install a registry entry that adds the command "Grant Admin Full Control" to the right click drop down.I did that, it will be interesting to see if that works for some other access problems. However it didn't do anything for Quicktime. It will not let me uninstall the old version and it won't let me install the new version.I always get the Getlasterror 5, error which is caused by Windows not allowing the process to complete.Any one else run into this.I have seen posts that say to physically delete the Quicktime software but I don't really want to do that, I'm afraid I'll end up with no working version.I'm open to suggestions, this isn't a big deal, because the older version is installed and working. The same thing happens when trying to update ITunes, so it's and Apple, Windows thing. These over the top security issues are the only thing that really bugs me about Windows 7, I've been dealing with these ever since I started running it in beta.

A few months ago I've been having issues with attempting to install Flash Player and QuickTime. I'm currently using Firefox 7.0 and Internet Explorer 8 as a backup browser. In Firefox, the installation works, but whenever I restart the computer, it requires another installation. Whenever I attempt an IE installation, I get the "failed to register" message, citing problems with the ActiveX control. Prior to all this, I hadn't any problems with either browser's handling the Flash Player.I've tried several corrective methods online, but nothing seems to fix the problem.I've also had issues with QuickTime installs; install attempts have been met with the "Error 46: Could not load or find the QuickTime ActiveX control" message. The ActiveX control seems to be the culprit in both cases and I'm beginning to suspect it might be a registry problem, but I'm not sure

I wouldn't let Quicktime near my PC except iTunes requires it, and I need iTunes to sync iPhones.Once I install it, Quicktime hijacks IE9 and Firefox, attempting to play certain media files in a browser window when I really want them to open up in Windows Media Player instead.I disabled everthying I could through Quicktime's settings and MIME file type menus, restored all the file associations I could through the Windows 7 control panel and checked the browsers for any Add-Ons to be disabled, yet Quicktime still opens up certain .mp3 and .asp links (along with anything else I haven't discovered yet)I even tried using the standalone Quicktime installer hoping it would offer some better options to uncheck during the install process but that was no better. Apple seems to have decided its mandatory Quicktime player is the most important media player on my PC but I wholeheartedly disagree

While using Overdrive Media Console to download audio books for my Zune, I recently encountered a box stating I need to install Windows Media Player Security Update 2.5.0.1. I have tried to download this update from several sources including Microsoft and have not been able to do so. I called Microsoft and HP(I'm using a Pavillion running Windows 7), they were of no help at all.

I am running Windows 7 (32-bit) SP1. IE9 for my browser and my problem is everytime open a new session in the browser I am asked at some point to install Adobe Flash Player all over again. It will install successfully everytime, however, it is very annoying that I must re-install this software every-single time. Additionally, I see that in my 'Services' Adobe Flash Player Update Service is STOPPED and It will not START regardless. Manual, Automatic, Delayed.does not matter the Service will not START.

I am using Overdive Media Console, attempting to run Windows Security Update on Windows Media Player. I am running Windows 7X64 and have WMP12.From what I've seen on the web, I am certainly not the first person to run into problems here. Yet any of the "fixes" I have found do not work for me. When I open Overdrive, it tells me I need the security update for WMP. It also says that my version of security is 2.9.0.1, and to click here to update. When I do this, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. I have used the Microsoft web link for the update;it tells me it is updating, then that the update has been successful. Yet when I go back to the Media Console, same message about update needed.
I have tried this in the "normal" mode, have also tried it as "administrator", both in Overdrive and also in IE. I have also gone to C: ProgramData/Microsoft/DRM and changed the name of the DRM file.( I do note that my DRM file is empty, so I can't imagine what magic this would work anyway.) I have modified Windows Firewall to allow Overdrive and all instances of WMP. I have disabled my adblocker. I have run sfc/ scannow with no problems found. I have emptied my internet cache.

I'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.

I wanted to ask if it is possible to set Windows media player to open as the default player inside media center. The reason that I ask this is that I find media center sound is very low quality. I am using it inside windows 7 ultimate X64. I also use Media Browser and have set it to use media player as an external player but it loses some functionality after something is played I have to restart media center and media Browser to play anything again because it will go back to menus but not play anything untill

The update is called:
nvidia - Graphics adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M.
After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts. I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there. I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.

A while back, after successfully downloading and installing some updates in the Windows Update, it prompted me to restart the computer to finish the update installation process. However, I continued to use the computer for quite some time before restarting it, and then when it tried to configure the updates on the start-up screen, it showed that it was not successful in doing so. In the past, I noticed that this would typically happen when I did not restart the computer immediately (or within a short time) after the updates finished and I got the prompt to restart. I would have to go to Windows Update and do it over again, and then upon immediate restart, it would always work properly. But this time, it did not, and I keep getting the 8000FFFF error message instead.
Also, now, every time I start the computer, it shows that it's "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not shut off computer" (presumably the updates that never got completely and correctly configured) in the start-up screen... gets to 35%..fails... shuts down (screen goes black)... restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, shuts down and restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, and finally it apparently gives up and says "reverting changes" and finally goes to the desktop.I've looked at the answers in several threads at the answers.microsoft.com forum that were started by people with similar problems, and also tried several of the Microsoft "FixIt" files on the Microsoft site, but none of them worked. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

My windows update does not like to load! It takes a very long time and sometimes causes explorer to crash! When I checked, I had 92 updates to install. When I click download and install, it would freeze and stay there for a long time. I tried to use the Fix it application, however that gets stuck on "Checking Online for Updates" as well! What should I do? I also tried to update in safe mode, but it wouldn't let me.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers,

OK, first I have to say I am a complete piker with this stuff. If I have to do anything that requires changing the BIOS or registry or anything like that, I am gonna have to pay someone to fix this.OK, here is my problem. Windows update fails with a code 8007370B. I have Windows 7 Pro, a Dell XPS 9100 with 16GB RAM, which I added, as well as a Asus ENGTX460 Top video card. The system has worked great with this configuration for well over a year. I use MSE as security, and Zone Alarm for the firewall.I have been getting this code since October. I tried doing the windows troubleshoot and fix links, I tried Fixit, I tried System Restore, nothing worksThe system also says under last time updated "Never" and it displays no record

I have excellent reviews of VLC from other people who have used it. I used it more the Windows Media Player or Media Center. I avoid Media Center all together for other reasons. But I have other video formats (.mkv, .mp4, .flv, .webm, .mov) and it seems like VLC can handle them all. Any one else have any other opinions or options for someone like me who uses multiple video file formats other than just .avi?
