How To Fix The BOOTMGR Is Missing Error

Sep 30, 2012

I'm very sure, especially if you've ever installed a second HDD on your computer yourself you have seen this message. BOOTMGR is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.Basically when it says to restart it is assuring you no treatment will work, WRONG! this is one of the easiest problems ever to fix, if you have your Windows 7/Vista installation disc.First step - Boot from installation mediaSecond step - Go through everything until you find a button that says "Repair your computer"Third step - Let it run though, on the first time, it will not find a WORKING operating system, restart when it prompts and boot the disc again.Forth step - Repeat Second step, and now your OS should be listed, click on it and run Startup Repair.Fifth step - Do NOT boot from disc, because it should now be fixed.this i have only tested on 7, idk if this completely complies to Vista)

Unable To Fix Bootmgr Error?

Feb 25, 2012

I created a backup partition on an external usb drive, and cloned my drive inside my laptop onto that external partition. I wanted to test the partition and so, I set that partition as active. Now when I boot, I cannot boot from either hd. I tried repair disk from the installation cd, tried command prompt bootrec/fixboot and bootrex/fixmbr, but neither worked. Even when I have the external hd unplugged, the same bootmgr is missing error. I set the internal hd to active using the command prompt, but no change

Bootmgr Is Missing Error After Installing New Hdd, But Only Sometimes

Dec 18, 2012

I recently decided to move a hard drive I've had in an external enclosure to inside my case. After I did this I got a bootmgr is missing error on startup.

Things that may be useful to know:

I have 3 hard drives (this new one being the third), one 60gb for my operating system, one 160gb for other junk, and now this 1tb one I've just put in.

My 60gb operating system drive is connected using an IDE cable, the other two using SATA cables.

I've checked all plugs and connectors in the case.

I've checked the boot order in the BIOS, sometimes the 60gb drive doesn't even show up, sometimes it does. My boot order is CDROM, then HDD(60gb one obviously). So startup will go like this: Bootmgr is missing, go into BIOS, check boot order, HDD not showing up, restart, Bootmgr is missing, go into BIOS, HDD is there, exit and startup ok. except sometimes I have to restart it a few times before it'll show up.

If I have posted this in the wrong thread, then let me know which would be the best thread to post in and Ill move it there.

Update: Just crashed with a blue screen, it restarted itself but now I'm getting "a disk read error occurred" message. I restarted it and I got "Bootmgr is missing" again.

Recurring BOOTMGR Is Missing Error

Jun 13, 2011

Managed to break my PC again in my usual form. So I recently bought a new SSD and did a fresh installation of Windows 7 on it. Everything boots fine - until I get nitpicky about the boot times and start changing some settings in the BIOS. To give some background, I was initially trying to resolve a problem with slow boot times on my GIGABYTE P55A-UDL3. There is a 10sec delay after the "Loading Operating System" message. Windows splash screen onwards only takes 5 secs. I read somewhere that this had to do with having the CD-Rom as the first boot device. (Don't even want to get started on the AHCI BIOS itself already adding another 2-3secs) Anyway, if I recall correctly I did some (supposedly harmless stuff like) moving my SSD to the #1 priority in the BIOS list and also set Hard Disk as the first (and only) Boot Device. Boom. BOOTMGR is Missing.

Bootmgr Missing Error From Usb Windows 7 ISO?

Aug 16, 2012

My computer recently began to give me bsod and would not detect external devices, i.e. external hard drives, wireless adapters, and other usb devices. The issue windows gave me as the cause was that these devices did not have digital signatures. After online research and a trip to the geek squad, I determined that all of my hardware was in perfect working order. I tried to remove and re-install my copy of windows 7 64 bit ultimate but found that my disk was, despite being unscathed, unreadable and unusable.

I found several articles about creating a bootable USB drive with an ISO of the disk. I have the ISO on my laptop and have been trying to get my USB to operate on the desktop, which due to blue screens and automatic restarts gave me no recourse but to wipe it completely. As I stand now I have partitioned the USB drive as fat32 after doing a cmd prompt cleaning and have loaded the iso on using several different programs including the official Microsoft USB creator. All but one have produced the same error saying "error loading operating system" when booting from just the USB. The only program to produce a different result was YUMI which loaded a program that launches on start up and gives me the option to use the Windows 7 ISO but then produces another error saying "Error 27: Unrecognized Command"

Have I missed something in the formatting process or does the fact that the Windows USB creator re formats the USB as NTFS before every ISO upload mean that I cannot load my copy of Windows 7 this way?

Replaced PSU And GPU - BOOTMGR Missing Error On Boot Up

May 29, 2012

Recently I have had a load of hardware issues which have caused me to replace my PSU and GPU. After doing so to more powerful units, I went to boot up again and got the error: "BOOTMGR is missing"

I have had this before when I remove my secondary HDD and just try and boot from my primary SSD, but after re-connecting the secondary HDD it would work again (telling me this BOOTMGR is on the HDD, even though the Windows files are on the SSD).

I don't know what to make of this as if I boot from the SSD alone nothing happens and it restarts, and if I connect the HDD and it boots then it goes into the System Recovery and after repairing/restoring still won't work. I think the BIOS settings are correct, with the SATA drives set to AHCI (as I'm 99% sure they were before).

My PC specs are:
Intel i7 980X
Intel DX58SO Motherboard
128GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
2TB WD HDD (secondary)
Radeon 7850 2GB GFX
8GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate

Bootmgr Error After Trying To Delete Partition Off OS Disk?

Mar 11, 2012

I have an OCZ Agility 3 as well as a Crucial M4 SSD I thought Id setup everything right but then noticed that the drive only had 100 mb available while following some steps from Seans SSD Optimization guide (I finished Step 3, didn't go to Step 4). I went into disk management, saw that the Agility drive was unallocated and that the drive I was seeing iComputer was actually just a 100 mb partition of the Crucial M4.I then created a new simple volume for the Agility, unassigned the partition drive letter, then tried to delete the partition, though the system didt allow me to (I had confused enabling the Agility drive with simply creating a partition so I thought I should get rid of the partition). After restarting, Im getting the bootmgr missing error, which leads me to the conclusion that I definitely messed something up.

* Ive tried using my original install disc to do a recovery install but then I get the error that:his version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows* Ive also skipped to the command prompt and tried to run the bootrec commands to no avail. The bootrec /scanos command recognizes that Windows is installed on the Crucial M4 but I can't rebuild anything off of it.* I also tried to Custom Install on my drives and am told that I cannot install Windows on either Partition 1 or 2 of my Crucial or the Agility 3. I still see the 100 mb partition there marked as "Primary" while the bigger partition with the actual OS files is marked "System. The error message reads:Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disksI'm not sure what else I can do at this point. I just tried unplugging the drives and observed the following:* If both drives are plugged in, then I am unable to do a custom install of Windows onto any of the M4 partitions or the Agility* If the M4 is plugged in (but the Agility is not), then I also cannot install onto either partition* If only the Agility is plugged, then I **can** install Windows and go into the repair install windows but there is no OS, obviously.

Windows 7 Install Error 0x80070017 - BootMGR Missing

Nov 24, 2011

I have had number of errors, the latest being 'Error number: 0x80070017' when trying to install windows 7. I'll start from the top. Originally I had problems exactly the same as on this thread below, incl same model PC except with Vista, also USB mouse often freezes or stops working: [URL]. I ignored the problem until crash during online streaming (assumed problem was to do with graphics card), usual multi coloured horizontal lines on monitor, repeating sound. Manual push button shutdown.

On restart, black screen no boot activity. Recovery DVD doesn't work/ don't have all the discs. So I bought Win 7 upgrade instead. Now I have a combination of 'BOOTMGR is missing', and when that doesn't occur PC freezes on any screen you can think of. Sometimes I can get all the way to 'expanding files' when installing Win 7, then I get Error number: 0x80070017. I have tried copying DVD to USB drive (in case it's a dvd drive speed problem), but then cannot copy the whole DVD usually there's an error stopping me (on another pc).

Also no OS available to select during repair system selection on Win 7 upgrade/install screens. Finally error regarding 'USB drive unplugged during boot' or something to that effect, also tells me DVD or CD or hard drive might no be connected properly. Had that message twice, again locks up. I've checked inside, every thing connected.

So to summarise:
Bootmgr missing (on boot)
Error number: 0x80070017 (on Win 7 install)
No OS available to select (System repair)
Constant freezing

Error Message "BOOTMGR Is Missing"?

So I was doing the steps in this thread, and I came to the point where you set the partition to 'active. However,I accidently turned my computer off and now it tried to boot from that partition and it gives me the error message "BOOTMGR is missing" because I literally don't have anything on the disk yet. No Windows 7, nothing.

My question for you is: Can I change the partition that is being booted in BIOS or how do I change that?

Get The "bootmgr Is Missing" Error?

Jul 20, 2012

Today I got my new laptop and decided to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it. After everal hours of partitioning and researching, I ran into many issues. Eventually I decided to boot Ubuntu from a USB drive, open up Gparted, and delete any and all Linux partitions while expanding the size of the Windows partition back to normalnfortunately, in the process, I must have made an error, because now upon startup I get the "bootmgr is missing" error. I don't have a recovery CD nor does my laptop have a CD drive, so that's out of the question, but I know for a fact my Hard Drive has a recovery partition on it. I want to restore my computer back to normal, keeping my old files if necessary. However, since I just got the computer today, I clearly don't have anything on there I can't afford to lose, so if I must do a factory reset I will.

My Bootmgr Is Missing

Mar 13, 2012

First off, why is reinstalling windows 7 such a pita? I've done it several times and it's soooooooo bad. With that aside, tonight I was attempting to reinstall 64 bit from 32 bit. I reformatted my hd using dos because advanced recovery simple does not work. After formatting and restarting I'm getting te bootmgr error. After reading countless threads with fixes nothing is helping. I CANNOT get past this error. I have the disc in, it won't go past the error. Pushing f2, f8, and f12 does not work. I can't do anything in the bios. Most of the solutions simply assume you can get PAST the error.

The next step I tried was unplugging the hd I formatted and installing to a different hd. This gives me an error of missing a device required. At this point I have no idea what to do besides maybe reformatting the hd again using another pc. Is there a recovery program I should dl to a blank cd?
