Fix A Black Screen Of Death?

Nov 30, 2011

Yesterday I was watching a movie on VLC media player when my whole laptop started freezing randomly, and I had to wait 1 minute until it unfroze, and after that it was slow as sh*t and I couldn't even restart it, it would stay stuck on my desktop wallpaper. Then I just got impatient and removed my laptop battery and unplugged the AC cord. Then I restarted my laptop and I couldn't get passed the BIOS, it just showed a black screen with no cursor or anything.

I tried pressing F8 to enter safe mode but the safe mode screen doesn't appear. I also tried doing a system restore from my BIOS but it would just give me an error saying that the restore point was corrupted. Also, I did drop my laptop about 30 mins before this happened, but it wasn't even a 1 foot drop and it was on carpet, but I'm guessing by this that something inside the laptop got dislocated or something. And yes it was the only time I've dropped it. Also, when you let the black screen on for about 15 mins it goes into System Repair but that doesn't do anything at all.

I wouldn't mind just taking it to the shop and completely reinstalling Windows, but I have about 10gb of music and I seriously don't want to lose it. Yes I know I should have backed it up but I've never had a problem before so I didn't expect this.

Black Screen Of Death?

Jan 30, 2013

I hope this is the correct section to put this in. For the past 4 days, I have been trying to fix my computer but I am stumped. My computer is running Windows 7 Professical 32 bit. On Sunday night, I turn on my computer. It starts up like normal, until screen where it asks if I want to boot into Startup Repair (Recommended) or Start Windows Normally. I think nothing of it and just start it normally. After I select that, it reboots and goes back to that boot screen. Naturally, I just let it run Startup Repair. I let it run overnight and in the morning I find my computer with a black screen and movable cursor. I didn't think much of it, so I rebooted and the black screen persists. I look up possible solutions for this (I later found out this problem is called the a Black Screen of Death or KSOD) but have failed to discover a solution.

Black Screen Of Death

Jun 28, 2009

The full details of my system before anyone can help. The computer is an Intel core 2 duo 6600 2.40 Ghz with 2 meg ram. Nvidia Gforce 8600 GT graphics card. I have no onboard VGA graphics just the Gforce, and I am not sure if I have DVI display the monitor just connects with the normal socket.

The hard drive I am installing to is a 80Gig SATA and I formatted it before starting with the windows 7 RC boot dvd so it is a clean install. I downloaded the installation file and burn the image with Nero on a slow speed. When I boot from the DVD all works ok and the computer restarts a few times, and then just a black screen.

After several attempts i did manage to get as far as inputting the serial number and windows 7 started up it then connected to the internet and downloaded some updates and then restarted and i was back to the black sreen, i could at that time boot into safe mode but i was not able to connect to the internet and download new video drivers.

Then after foollowing some advice i did another install, I tried a reinstall and now I can’t get as far as the serial number. I can’t understand this as I did have it running just the once even if it was in safe mode. I have run the Windows 7 RC upgrade advisor and that says my computer is ok to run Windows 7 including the Gforce card.

Black Screen Of Death During Boot, Before Login Screen

Mar 18, 2012

While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far: These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode boot in safe mode with networking boot in safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change. I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing memory test - nothing tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!) tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed. chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change. tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing

Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow.

Random Black Screen Of Death?

Dec 22, 2011

In the last few weeks I've had random Black Screens Of Death. It can happen (most of the time) while playing a game, but it has happened while the PC was idle (rare) and just now it happened as I was attempting to refresh the Win 7 performance index. Most of the time, the screen goes black (complete video signal loss) and I have to hard reset. On the rare occasion it will go black, then after a while crash and dump. The last minidump file I got is included here. It seems fairly obvious that the issue is video related but I can't tell if it's the ATI drivers or a 3rd party driver causing havok with them.I've been trying, with zero success, to get some Driver Verifier output. Once I set Driver Verifier to check the 3rd party drivers it bluescreens during the Windows 7 splash screen and then reboots and loops. What I did do was hit F8 during one of the loops and stopped it from rebooting on error so I could capture the detail of the bluescreen. It's as follows:

Stop 0x0000001E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF80003AD4D56, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000).

I can't tell if this issue is related to my black screen issue.I think the issue is driver related but can't prove it at this point and I'm having difficulty interpreting the addresses above.I've run memtest for a couple of hours and no errors came up.

Windows 7 Black Screen Of Death

Feb 24, 2010

My computer has recently started to get the Black Screen of death every time I try to log in. It boots up and goes through the bios and the Windows 7 logo but after that, rather than loading the 'log-in screen' it simply stays as blank, black screen. There is no cursor, mouse, error message, etc. and Ctrl, Alt, Del does not work here either. It will however allow me to log in via 'safe mode'.

I have tried the following fixes: I have restored the computer to a known working date; I have tried repairing the MBR, as well as the Boot sector; I have run a 'Check Disk' with no errors coming back; I have tried the 'Prevx Black Screen Fix'; I have run a 'Memory diagnostics test' via Windows 7 live cd, which returned no errors; and I have also tried the 'Repair' option in the menu on the Windows 7 live cd.

Now, every once in a while, it will actually make it to the log-in screen and let me log into Windows like normal, which then proceeds to work just fine. But, if I restart the computer, it will again get stuck at the Black Screen right before the log-in screen and just sit there. And all the fans are working, the green light comes on on the motherboard, and everything seems to be in working order as far as hardware goes. What could be the problem?? I am out of ideas at this point.

Black Screen Of Death When Trying To Run 3D Applications

Jan 15, 2013

So today I put a new motherboard/CPU/PSU/ and 2 sticks of DDR3 RAM 8 gigs (Corsair Vengeance) into my tower.

After I booted it up and downloaded the drivers for my mobo, I tried to run the Windows System Rating program.

Almost immediately after clicking the run button my fan on my GPU kicks into high gear and my screen goes black and my monitor loses signal to my PC and shuts off. I have to force shutdown my PC.

I booted my PC back up and tried to run a game and lo' and behold the same thing occurs. So I do a clean install of my OS because I figured I was having some issues with conflicting drivers from my old mobo because in my eagerness I neglected to uninstall them prior to swapping the new motherboard in.

After the clean install I again went and downloaded the drivers for my motherboard, GPU and updated my DirectX. I figured that this would of fixed it but NO.

I'm still having the same problem.

So I went and downloaded a program that would scan my system for outdated drivers and ran it. It came up with 2 outdated drivers: One for my sound card and one for my PCI express. SO I'm currently downloading those to see if by some chance that this fixes it. But I doubt it

The new board I put in is a Biostar TA75m+ and my CPU is last year's Llano A8 3850

Black Screen Of Death After IOLO Defrag?

May 17, 2012

My laptop (Dell Studio 1550, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) just gave me the black screen upon start-up. The Iolo System Mechanic had defragged the registry, I think, and it seems that the process had damaged my laptop's registry. I've ran sfc /scannow with no issues, but the memory diagnostic test froze. I am now running System Restore but it too returns a black screen upon completion. It seems from prior threads that a clean re-install is necessary. Would like to know if this is indeed the only solution, and if so, how do I go about re-installing without an installation CD (Dell never sent one, and I had bought the laptop abroad while I was in college).

Windows 7 Black Screen Of Death Followed By Driver

Jun 16, 2012

Windows 7 Home, SP1. Black Screen with Moveable Cursor followed by driver issues with mouse. My diablo3 account got hacked about a week ago. Following that, I reinstalled Malware bytes, ad-aware, and spybot and did full scans/immunizations with each. I think I had one hit with spybot in my cookies? Nothing like a keylogger.A few days later, after my first reboot to install a flash update or something, I got the Black Screen with cursor after bootup. It actually took a really long time to go black - there was a lot going on. A couple updates were downloading/ installing, but then after like 5 minutes of non-responsive explorer (couldn't open start menu) it went to Black Screen with cursor. Happened again upon reboot.Booted to safe mode with networking, found a forum post that mentioned something about dll access permissions. I loaded up that section, fixed my administrator permissions to all. It did some things, but threw errors for C:\windows\system32 and C:\program files(x86), if I remember correctly.Tried rebooting normally, it worked. Couple days later, automatic windows update rebooted my computer, and my mouse (razer) stopped working. I believe this is a driver issue, as I had the same problem when I first installed the mouse. The buttons work fine but it doesn't pick up the movement.I'm worried I haven't fixed the issue completely, and I'm not entirely sure where it came from in the first place. It should be noted that I don't have easy access to another system to boot under to change the drive permissions that way.

Black Screen Of Death When Playing Games

May 19, 2012

When I launch either of 2 games (Borderlands and The Secret World), after a while, the screen will go dark and most of the time I'll hear a high pitched wine, I'll restart the PC and everything is usually good. I say usually because in the last 2 days, when booting up, I'll get to the screen that says "Starting windows" or the desktop is about to be displayed and the screen goes dark.

The SSD firmware has been updated to the latest; I worked with Kingston to do this. In the BIOS, the drive is configured to use Raid (XHD) and the drive is physically connected to the SATA3 port.

I have tried physically connecting it to a SATA2 for the firmware upgrade along with changing from Raid (XHD) to ACHI to IDE. When I run the program Speccy, it says that the status of S.M.A.R.T is bad and running Crystal Disk Info, it says Unknown for the disk health and other fields.

Restarted it to allow updates to be applied, then nothing. All I get is a black screen with a mouse cursor (that I can move, for all the good it does me)I've tried every possible key combination out there, nothing works. F8, F12, Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing. Can't go into Safe Mode, can't access the BIOS. All I get is the Windows opening chime and a black screen where I would normally log in to access my computer. Every connection is secure, nothing loose.

Device Manager And Black Screen Of Death?

Jun 8, 2011

it all happened a couple of weeks ago when i let my idiotic girlfriend borrow my external hard drive which ultimately led to it no longer working due to the usb port coming off.i was trying to retrieve the data on it because my gateway p-78 series could when in the proper position detect the data on it. because the usb was no longer attached to it i saw a small shortage that shut my computer off.although i was able to turn my computer back on i went into the device manager because my usb ports were no longer able to read external devices like cameras or my zune mp3. when i went into the device manager it stated that my usb devices (forgot which ones) where shut off to prevent harm to my computer.i didnt think of it as much because my computer was working perfectly fine with the exception of the usb drives...so i turned them back on and restarted my computer and got black screen.my computer turns on, i can hear the fan running and my computers keyboard seems to work also because i can turn on and off the lights on my computer by pressing fn+f3 but i cant automatically shut down my computer because the only way i can is by removing the battery.

Microsoft Patches Cause Black Screen Of Death

Dec 1, 2009

Microsoft’s latest round of security patches appears to be causing some PCs to seize up and display a black screen, rendering the computer useless. The problem affects Microsoft products including Windows 7, Vista, and XP operating systems, said the CEO and CTO for the U.K. security company Prevx. Prevx was alerted to the problem by users of its security software last week, the CEO said.

Microsoft apparently made changes to the Access Control List (ACL), a list of permissions for a logged-on user. The ACL interacts with registry keys, creating visible desktop features such as a sidebar. However, the latest patches appear to make some changes to those registry keys. The effect is that some installed applications are not aware of the changes and do not run properly, causing a black screen. Security applications seem to be particularly affected. The CEO said users of other security products have also complained about the issue, even going so far as trying to reinstall the operating system to fix it.

Prevx has released software that fixes the registry to match the ACL settings, which should resolve the problem, the CEO said. Users could do this on their own by modifying their registry settings, but making alterations to those settings is risky since it can severely affect how the operating system runs. The CEO said Microsoft was likely just trying to fortify the security of the operating systems when it inadvertently made the error in its patches.

Black Screen Of Death While Playing Games?

Dec 11, 2012

I get black screen of death with annoying sound from my pc speakers while playing games only. Apart from playing games my pc is working fine and it has no problem at all. The windows 7 is perfect which I installed in May 2011; is in excellent shape, all other programs like videos, online surfing, audios, working on MS office are running well without any issue. So the problem lies with games only that too the new games and not the older ones like Stronghold Crusader Extreme is running well, but newer games like Call of Duty, Sniper Ghost Warrior, Time Shift or Euro Truck 2, I experiencing the black screen of death. The specs of my pc are as under:-

1.Processor:Intel Pentium Dual Core E5700 3.00 GHz (Wolfdale 45nm Technology)

2.RAM:3.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz (5-5-5-15)As I read on the internet that windows 7 32-bit system cannot read RAM more than 3.0 GHz so I have installed just 3.0 GHz

3.Video Card:SMB1930N (1360x768@60Hz), 512MB GeForce 210 (nVidia)

4.HDD:466GB Seagate ST3500413AS ATA Device (SATA) can be rounded as 500 GB

5.OS:Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit The thing to note here is the temperature of my video card is 80 Degree Celsius whereas of other hard ware's it is between the range of 30 and 40 degrees Celsius, what you might think is that would be the problem area.

Black Screen Of Death Before Sign-in - Windows 7

Feb 7, 2013

This is exactly what has been happening when I start up my computer from a cold boot.

1. I see the Bios screen - Everything loads just a little slower. Like when it's locating the ram and drives, but it only takes about 10 seconds on the bios screen. Before this problem the bios screen would pretty much just flash on the screen for a second or two.

2. I see the words "loading operating system"

3. Black Screen of Death of 25-30 minutes

4. The Windows 7 Log-in page appears, so I log in and EVERYTHING is NORMAL.

The thing that puzzles me the most is that after everything loads the speed of all my applications and everything is just as fast as it was before the problem. So my main problem is the 25-30 minute hang-up with a black screen. I don't understand what could be causing this problem.

Black Screen Of Death - Cannot Access Desktop (Error 0xc0000185)

Aug 20, 2012

Back when it was released, I installed Windows 8 preview on a new partition of my Windows 7 laptop. Ive been switching back and forth no problem, but about a month ago when trying to log in, I typed in my password and was stuck at the black screen with a cursor. After a few restarts and startup repairs it sorted itself out. Now, it's happened again, but this time, startup repair isn't doing the trick. It reports no OS found in the error. I am dual booting between 7 and 8, and in trying to login to 7, typing my password, it again brings me to the black screen with a cursor. I cannot press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reach the task manager and manually start explorer.exe, and same thing happens in safe mode.

I have checked my C drive and saw there were backups of my explorer.exe, so I tried to switch them up with the current one. At one point, I could get to my desktop and see all of my taskbar icons, however hovering over the taskbar would show a loading cursor and I could not open anything. Restarting again brought me back to the black screen. I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, BCD editor, etc, to no avail. I have also tried "last known good configuration", system restore (which reports no restore points...) and checking the registry to verify explorer.exe is the only listing in the Shell file. Also, virus scan MBAM and others: No viruses.

Errors: At one point with the black screen, I let it sit, and a few errors came up after an hour or so... dwm.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, explorer.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, then when pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, "Failure to display security and shut down options". In viewing one of the error details, it reported problem event name InPageCoFire, damaged file name propsys.dll. I replaced that file and a clean one and no change. Right now I am using Windows 8 boot. I can see all of my files are still in the Windows 7 partition.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit - Black Screen Of Death With Cursor

Jan 21, 2013

So yesterday I turned off my PC. Nothing was wrong, everything was fine as it always was, nothing unusual, no random slowdowns, errors, etc. The next day I went to turn on my PC and that when it happened... the infamous Black Screen of Death. Just a black background with my cursor. I don't have the original disc with Windows because my friend upgraded my Windows XP to Windows 7.

- Task manager doesn't work. (ctrl + alt + del, and all the other ones that have to do with opening a window)
- Safe mode doesn't work, none of them.
- Tried PervX fix, didn't work. (Though I did it through Windows XP by booting to earlier version of Windows, so it probably wouldn't effect Windows 7 anyways.)
- Tried Malwarebytes on both of my HDD's, one containing Windows XP, the other containing Windows 7.
- Tried ALL options through the Repair Windows boot using F8.
- Tried most options I could think of in command prompt through the Repair Windows boot.
- Tried ALL other boot options in F8.
- Tried a lot of other stuff I can't remember, but I'm more than happy to hear replies with possible fixes, even if I tried them but didn't list.

Black Screen Of Death, Highly Related To LMI Hamachi & Hotspot Shield?

Mar 7, 2012

I used to have Hamachi and Hotspot Shield, weeks ago, 'till I shut down my computer and rebooted. I got a black screen after log-in. So, this happens whenever I do one of these actions, and restart/shut down system:>LMI Hamachi is installed >LMI Hamachi is uninstalled >Hotspot Shield is installed >Hotspot Shield is uninstalled And as stated, system is them shut down/rebooted, proceeding with black screen error. The only way I can sometimes fix this is by:>Going in safe mode, SAFE MODE IS ALWAYS ACCESSIBLE, and then going to various system restores, and then doing the "recommended system restore". Otherwise won't fix.Weird though, has never ever happened with anything else, just those both, which modify networking processes I think. So, I am facing a decision. I need Hamachi. What can I do to ensure no more black screens, while having my computer safe? What is wrong with my computer? Or is it UAC Settings? By the way, I run Avast! Free Antivirus and make weekly full scans, as well as a few pre-boot scans every month. I've NEVER had a virus.

When Reboot, The Screen Eventually Goes To A Black Screen Saying "Windows 7 Failed To Start?

May 12, 2012

My wife did something on her PC (she doesn't know exactly for sure what & can't explain it completely me), and now she can't boot up her PC. She says it had something to do with changing the security settings for a program she uses a lot so it wouldn't keep asking her if she wanted to launch it, and that's when it told her to restart the PC, then it wouldn't boot up anymore. When you reboot, the screen eventually goes to a black screen saying "Windows failed to start. A software or hardware error may be the cause" or something to that effect. It offers me the option to "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally".If I Launch Startup Repair, nothing much happens --- it says it's adding files, then it looks like Windows is about to boot up, then it goes to a black screen for a long time & nothing happens.

If I choose Start Windows Normally, it simply reboots & eventually brings me back to the same screen again.I've tried using rebooting and selecting ESC to get to the boot menu, then installing the Win 7 installation disc & selecting the DVD drive, then I select thelanguage, then I click Repair, but it sits there forever with nothing happening.I also tried an outside boot disc I found on the web & it doesn't launch.

So there is no problem with formatting. My computer now is clear.I started installing Windows from the USB Flash, It it started normally, and go through the steps up to the window titled "Install Windows" which contains this Text: ..... Installing Windows That's all the information we need right now. Your computer will restart several times during installation

Copying Windows files

Completing installation

This Window completed successfully, and prepared to reboot. After reboot it displays a black screen with scattered alt characters. the characters has no specific order. A blinking cursor after the last line........ Just reference to alt charachters: 1, 2 That black screen (with characters) remain without any change, I wait for 15 minutes but no thing happened, I press many keys but no response even Alt+Ctrl+Delete for reboot. Windows 7 X64 Installation Error: Black Screen After Reboot

Jan 11, 2013

i have a MSI A6000 Laptop. Ive been trying to fix this problem for 2 day with 12 hours time and read countless forums but still haven't been able to solve it.

I recently encountered windows 7x64 installation error, where i could not select disk partition to install. ( i formatted and deleted all of the partitions for a clean install). But somehow after running the memory diagnosis i was able to go through the installation. But during the installation on the second time it restarts, my computer gets a black screen when starting.

i cannot access the post screen menu or the recovery option( it is however possible to access the same thing via booting through the USB and selecting the recovery option instead of installing). Also the memory diagnosis tool does not work any more giving an error. The bios options are as follows:

MAIN : Serial ATA [Hard Disk]
Serial ATA [ATAPI CDROM]
Advanced: PCI Latency timer [64]
Legacy USB support [enabled]
AHCI Mode [endabled]

Windows Profile Deleted After Black Screen / Reboot

Jan 14, 2012

After installing 2 new GPU's i tried to run a game when suddenly my screen turned black. I rebooted my pc, logged into my normal account and everything was changed to basic ( like you just installed windows 7 ). A small thing popped up saying: User profile has been damaged. You are now using a temporary profile. ( Files that have been installed will be removed after the system has been shut off )I went to my User profile file and tried open it, but a messages popped up saying: C/Users/Jens Cannot be opened.File has been damaged and cannot be opened.Ive been searching on google, but i havent found anything to fix this.
