XPMode DOS Print Woes
Jan 9, 2012
Trying to print from DOS in XPMode.
Here is what I've done: windows 7 host and XP Mode are all members of same work group. Printer installed and tested on windows 7 host Windows 7 host has an 8.3 name. Both Windows 7 and XP dirvers for printer obtained Shared printer from Windows 7 host. Confirmed that other networked xp boxes could print to share.
Attempt #1:
1. In XP Mode, click USB, attach printer, installed drivers.
2. Printed test page from XP Mode, prints OK.
3. DOS printing did not work at this point, understandable as LPT1 was not mapped, at some point while I was playing around with this the virtual machine locked up and I had to reinstall xp mode.
Attempt #2:
1. In XP Mode, cmd prompt: NET USE LPT1 \windows7hostprinter /persistent:yes
2. Receive error 88.
3. Went to XP Mode printers/faxes - File - print server, drivers, add...
4. installed xp dirvers to XP Mode machine
5. Attempted to open printers/faxes in xp mode, virtual machine locked up, had to reinstall xp mode.
For attempt #3
I plan on doing the same as attempt #1 (usb/attach) but this time share the printer from xpmode, then try NET USE on that XPMode share.
If that fails, then for attempt #4 I will retry Attempt#2, but at XPMode cmd I will try NET USE LPT1 \tsclientprintername If that fails I don't know what to try. The machine is at a client's office and I don't have ready access to it. I have locked up the vitrual machine 3 times and reinstalling xpmode takes a while, so I'm limited on how much I can do in a session.
Does anyone know how to actually get this to work (LPT1 DOS print from XMMode to windows 7 host local printer)? Could the printer driver be causing the vitrual machine to lock up? Should I try a different printer? Sorry, I don't remember the exact printer - it's an HP officejet model.
So to summarize there seems to be a few possible options:
1. Share from windows 7 host, in XP Mode NET USE that share (fails with error 88)
2. Share from windows 7 host, in XP Mode NET USE \tsclientprinter (have not tried this yet)
3. USB attach in XP Mode, then share in XP Mode, then NET USE the XPMode share (have not tried this yet)
Obviously a NET USE LPT1 has to be in the equation but I don't know the proper way to share the printer and then access that share.

Installed Virtual PC with WindowsXPMode. Seems to have gone fine but, when I start an application there, it appears in a very small window - too small to really use the application. In WindowsXP if you press Alt-Enter the application goes fullscreen but this doesn't work , neither does dragging the sides or corner.

got a problem with WindowsXP Mode running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
The Vm starts up nicely, XPmode is loaded, however if I click the USB tag in the upper bar, XP Mode, and the whole host Windows 7, does crash. The "tipical" Microsoft Blue Screen comes up stating BAD POOL HEADER... and something more, that I cannot read in time, as all flashes and System goes down.
Already uninstalled and re-installed Latest MIcrosoft release of both Virtual machine and XPmode application, unsuccessfully. Quite strangely this happened after having Scrapped my SSD and reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch, due to a Windows update unrecoverable error .

I want to open some old files on an old external NTFS hard drive formatted in WinXP on my win7 laptop that recognises but rejects the old XP-formatted disk as an "invalid disk".
Rather than installing XP on the laptop as a dual boot along side Win7, I would like to know if I install XP-mode Virtual PC on my Win7 laptop will I be able to open my XP disk from within the XP-mode Virtual PC?

I am trying to set up a home network within Windows 7 so it can communicate with two other machines, one has installed XP, the other Vista.
I have set up home networks in the past no problem (not on 7) & whilst I can get all 3 PC's talking to one another it appears that XP & Vista can not only see my shared documents but also my user documents, more worrying is that both other machines can edit or change any of my user documents!
I would prefer none of the other PC's connected to the network to see my documents let alone gain access to them & whilst this folder is supposedly locked it isn't!

I'm having problems with the on-board sound-card on my Asus P5K Pro motherboard. I have had this mobo since christmas and has always worked with XP with out ever having any problems.
Last week i installed the RC and initially all seemed to go well. I downloaded the Realtek Vista drivers from the Asus website and installed with the "recommended configuration." This seemed to work properly and i happily continued on my way. A few days ago when i turned on my PC and whacked in a CD i realized there was no sound coming out of the speakers. Upon further inspection i realized there were no sounds coming out from the pc at all. I also realized that the Realtek GUI was no longer detecting the insertion of jacks into the socket.
My board has 5.1 audio outputs so i plugged the speakers into the other outputs to no avail. I did note however that the Realtek software did detect the insertion of a jack into these outputs but refused to spit anything out of them.
I decided to uninstall the driver and try to reinstall. Upon attempting this it repeatedly failed due to "not having the correct OS." When at last it did start to install it gave me a "realtek driver failed to install" screen. This scared me......
After a day of fiddling around i magically made it work and i was back where i started (not recognizing front jack, ignoring the output of others.) So i decided to put in a old PCI card i found in the rubbish bin It's a Creative labs CT4810 i think. I found some XP drivers and attempted an install. The drivers installed but when i attempted to use that driver for the so far unknown "multimedia audio device" i couldn't find it in the list of drivers. After reading further i started to think that the card wasn't PnP. *Shreek* Can PCI cards be non-PnP?
Anyway, i'm unsure now as to the origins of the error and am left audio-less. I'm starting to think it could be a hardware error due to the failure to detect the insertion of jacks and the recent movement (i moved my desk to vacuum behind it) of the PC. The cable to the speakers was also very taught. It is still under warranty (the mobo, not the system, i built the system) so i might take it back.
Any helpz plox?

So, I've just had an entertaining day building and installing my new Win7 HTPC, and for the most part the beast has been brought to heel. I have a rather odd inherited wireless multimedia keyboard with a built-in analogue joystick and mouse buttons which I've been using with a Ps3, but on the grounds that it was a bit unusual I built the system using a bog-standard keyboard and mouse. Once everything was up and running, I connected the multimedia keyboard, which Win 7 happily recognised and set up.
Here's the thing- since it's a portable keyboard, there's no numerical keypad. If you try and type on the thing, you get QWERTY1234- everything from the 'U' to the right is scrambled. Down to the next row it's ASDFGH then numbers again.
I've not yet been able to find any way of specifying this layout as opposed to the country settings, or of setting different settings for multiple keyboards. Of course, I'd be happy enough to use the multimedia board on its own, if using it and a standard keyboard at once is impossible. I've tried starting up with only the multimedia keyboard connected, but no dice.

So, I'm trying to install Windows 7. The keyboard and mouse seem to work fine until I get to the Windows 7 installation screen. When I'm there the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. Like, the mouse light and keyboard lights work up until the Windows 7 screen shows up. Anyone know what the problem is? I've had Windows 7 on it previously and had no issues, but wanted to do new clean install.

In advance: Sorry if this post is too long, or a repeat of a post that already exists (I searched but found none), or posted in the wrong category / sub-category. I don't usually have to ask questions on PC problems, but this one is simply too obscure.I have been having this problem installing certain programs for months now and have finally come to the conclusion that the installshield engine, or whatever corrupted it, is to blame. An example of the specific problem is listed below:
Error Code:-5009 : 0x80040707
Error Information:
>KernelTextSubstitution.cpp (920)
>KernelObjectWrapper.cpp (162)
>KernelObjectWrapper.cpp (557)
[code]...
Note that the specifics of the program do not matter. Any program I attempt to install that uses the iKernel engine results in the same error message. For example, anything from futuremark, install or uninstall, yields the same message.completely re-install windows, but that would require the re-installation of more programs than I can count, though thankfully most are steam-apps that can be easily restored.

I have an Acer GD235HZ monitor with HDMI input and an audio output jack. I've tried reinstalling and uninstalling and new installing everything to do with the drivers available for video card and monitor. Video card is GTX 470 and does have the ability to output sound through HDMI. I can't figure this one out, I need help! I'm using Windows 7 service pack 1 and have all drivers up to date. Oh, and the video output works perfectly! Also, yes I've tried different cables and have double checked that my headphones work that I'm plugging into the output jack from monitor!

Ok, so I have a couple of issues with my home network. I have 4 machines networked on a wireless network. Router is a Linksys WRT54G with WPA encryption using TKIP (if that makes any difference). One machine is running Win 7, one is running, Vista, and the other two are running XP Home. Both of the XP computers are using old Linksys WMP11 PCI wireless adapters. I will refer to the computers as W7MACHINE, VISTAMACHINE, XPMACHINE1, AND XPMACHINE2.
1. Ok, so my first problem is kinda simple. I'm trying to share my profile folder on W7MACHINE (C:UsersMe) over the network. I have it set to share, permissions give everybody full access, but none of the other machines can access it. They can see it, but when they try to access it they get an error telling them access is denied. Password-protected sharing is disabled, by the way. Why can't I access it?
2. The second problem is really the biggie. I have a Lexmark X5270 connected to XPMACHINE2, and I want to set up the other computers so they can print on it. XPMACHINE1 prints on it fine, no problems. Neither the Vista nor the Win 7 machine, however, can install it via the Add Printer -> Network Printer utility. Both W7MACHINE and VISTAMACHINE have the drivers installed on them, however, the company has not released drivers for Win 7 yet. When the printer is physically connected to W7MACHINE, it works fine with the Vista drivers.
Whenever I try to add the printer via the Add Printer->Network Printer utility, however, I get an error saying that Windows could not access the printer (error 0x0000000d). So, I tried the method that I found here and a few other places of telling the computer it's on a local port, creating XPMACHINE2Printer as the port, then trying to install. However, all this does is give me an interminable "installing printer..." dialog box, which I have let run for over an hour with no results. When I cancel it, I have to end the task via the Task Manager.
XPMACHINE2 also has a printer connected to it, an HP OfficeJet 4200 Series, which both the Win 7 and Vista computers can access, print on, etc. just fine. So, why can't I access the printer on the other computer? Is the printer too old? Is the computer too old?
3. My third problem isn't very important, but it's bugging me. When I go to the network map in Vista or Win 7, both XP machines are listed down at the bottom of the map because "Windows could not place the following discovered device(s) on the network map". I've heard this has to do with the Link-Layer Topology thing, but both XP computers are running SP3, which was supposed to include that fix. I've tried the method for fixing it found here, but they still don't show up.

Permission is just my newest trouble! My computer crashed some weeks ago, & I never received a solution; I have Windows 7 Home Premium on, 32 bit, on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It replaces one that was stolen from me; no frills is fine, but I have had many troubles! I am in exams online in grad school, so did not do my Performance Monitor/Error checking or anything, just working on schoolwork. But as I worked with reports, etc., I realized that all files in "My Documents" were also in (at least!) two other places: Public Documents and Pictures --
I went right to trying to move them, they were marked "Read Only", and I wasn't able to gain permission to ,make changes or move my files out of Public Documents, where they were "shared" & I was blocked from hitting "stop sharing" -- "didn't have the authority". When I realized they were also in Pictures, and set up as "Share" items, I was sickened; my very private documents on my computer system, & I didn't have the right to move my own files!
I am the Administrator, and I am the Owner; I live alone and nobody has used my laptop. *When I wrestled to restore my Permissions, I might make the changes, and "SYSTEM" seemed to be "in charge" -- my Full Control permissions were faded out, & when I would restore them, I could not click "Apply". Now unable to change permissions, or properties, I went to search for answers & was told to change the security settings at the root; I "enabled all authorized users to enable their permissions" -- that first time, it seemed to work & I was able to "un-share" my files; checked back to the root (C:drive), & it was back like before; my permissions faded & me blocked from clicking "apply" when I attempted to do what I did to get good results before.
I decided to do a "System Restore"; it did not make any difference. But there was an extra file (outside of the C drive System file called "System" when the Restore began. Bogus file called System?? Is that possible? Also, my Protection had been turned off; I had to re-set it and that has never happened.
I thought it could be a virus; ran the Microsoft program to detect Malware (am running Security Essentials); yet, I was told "no". It used to be so simple; my document files stayed in ONE location; & now I realize I have files in multiple locations and I neither did that nor authorized anyone to do that. *And I don't know how to move them with Internet Explorer; of course they are really located at "My Documents", so I am stopped from moving them out of the wrong place: "location is the same." It has been one really troubling matter after another & I hope there is some help for me.
I use a password, work from an Administrator Account; have changed passwords recently, & probably would have "let it go" tonight except that I was being exposed, and even now that (I think!) the share capacity was stopped (also went into Network Sharing & cut off "Network Discovery", I just feel so out of control with my own System & so vulnerably at risk: I have no idea how long my grad school and private documents weren't private!!

I've got two nice little 1680 x 1050 20.1" Dell S-IPS monitors, which are de-facto 16:10 units, mounted on an Ergotron stand, with the intention of using one for television and the other for computing purp's.My Graphics card is a capable Palit HD4850 Sonic with dual DVI outputs. It's also got an S-Video output which isn't in use. What I would like to do is run WMC maximised on one monitor, with TV there as and when I wish to view anything, and naturally I wish to use this screen maximised (the only issue in WMC is that there is a limitation of either choosing 4:3 or 16:9 ratio output, and not 16:10).However when I connect both monitors vai DVI output Windows7 locks my cursor in the maximised TV screen and I then cannot control the primary PC monitor whatsoever - which is somewhat of a complete farce, and is an extremely dissappointing result!Accordingly I have to drag the WMC display to get the 16:9 output to 'almost' fill the 16:10 monitor, and then face the annoyance of the cursor drifting to that screen from my PC monitor from time to time (I can happily live with a band to allow for the 16:9 ~ 16:10 hardware differential... but not this ridiculous loss of cursor control!)Question is this... why does my cursor focus get restricted to one screen if the Windows Media Centre is maximised? The whole point of having dual-monitors is being able to use both of them at once of course.I've tried with the ATi driver alone, and with the Catalyst suite loaded, with no differences to the issue. My monitors also have an S-Video input, but I've not got an S-Video cable to hand right now - however... if I were to use S-Video for one monitor would I avoid the 'locked in cursor' problem?

(Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, HP LaserJet CP1215)When printing from Word (or any other normal application) the documents just sit in the print queue with Status = "Error - Printing".If I stop, then re-start the Print Spooler service, they then print.Strangely enough, this does not happen if I print from the HP printer diagnostic utility.I've done complete re-install of the entire printer driver suite and I'm pretty sure everything that end is OK. So what's happening with the spooler? The error message isn't exactly very revealing

I'm on Windows 7 and have run into the annoyance of my PrtScn key actually bringing up the print dialog box to print. It still copies the screen to the clipboard for a paste into paint, but I can't figure out why it's bringing up the dialog to print or how to turn that off. I have seen it before maybe 8 years ago on Windows XP but do not remember what was done to correct it. When I try to search, I just find posts about it not working or how to turn the whole screen capture function off for the PrtScn button.

I am new to CMD but I would like to make a batch printing solution.
I know that using:
Code: "C:Program Files (x86)AdobeReader 10.0ReaderAcroRd32.exe" /t "C:file_1.pdf"
I can print file_1.pdf but what I really need is to print multiple files, let's say file_2, file_3... file_n, therefore my instruction will change to:
Code: "C:Program Files (x86)AdobeReader 10.0ReaderAcroRd32.exe" /t "C:XXXX.pdf"
I thought about making a TEXT file where I could write the name of the files that I need to print. Then in a batch file make a loop that will read each line of the TEXT and change my variable XXXX for the name of the file specified in each row of the TEXT.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this so I'll put it here My mother bought a cooking ebook, in PDF format and in 7 parts. They came with a password to view which is understandable, but printing is restricted. My mum doesn't really think taking her laptop in the kitchen is a very practical method of reading it, and so naturally she asked me to try and find a way around this restriction. As I said I have the password to actually open the PDF and it was all legitimately acquired so I don't see the problem in asking a question of this nature.
