Upgrade Windows 7 32bit To 64bit?
Mar 20, 2011Currently, I have Windows 7 32 bit installed on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. I originally had Windows Vista, but upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 32 bit for free during an event on my college campus. My laptop is however, 64 bit capable, so I'd like to upgrade to 64 bit. I realize this entails a clean install and I'm ok with that, however I have no idea of how to do that! I don't have any upgrade discs because the upgrade was done for me at the event. I have located my product key by downloading an application online that found it for me. Now, is there a (relatively) pain-free way for me to install Windows 7 64 bit on my capable computer, even though its 32 bit right now and I lack installation discs?

Sep 8, 2012I had Vista on my PC and upgraded to Windows 7 32bit via the Retail Upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium (which contains both 32bit &64bit upgrade discs).I want to now do a clean install to Windows 7 64bit, can I use the 64bit upgrade disc supplied with the Retail version I already have or do I have to purchase a full version of Windows 7 64bit?

Aug 5, 2010I have a 64 bit windows 7 upgrade disc, and no Vista installation disk. I do have a valid cd-key that came with the 64bit Vista operating system. I was looking for a CD image to download since like all laptops they give you the crappy restore disk that add bundled software you don't want and take forever to load.
So to sum it all up, upgrade from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7 possible? My Vista cd-key is for Vista Home Premium

Sep 20, 2011Although I'm presently running with Win 7 32bit I want to move to Win 7 64bit. I have the upgrade disks (both 32 & 64 bit) I purchased to upgrade from Vista. I now realise I'll have to re-install Vista before I can then try the Win 7 64bit upgrade. So far I've tried booting my machine with the Vista recovery disk I have from the OEM, and at the point of "install" (when it came to the point of re-installing Vista)swapped it for the Win 7 64bit. I then hit the buffers with the install procedure not recognizing the drivers for the CD/DVD drive ........ which I found has an enormous thread all by itself on this site.I do have 2 other external drives (J: and L: ) and a partition on the disk K:, for users and data; will I need to copy the contents of the disk to one of these ?? Has anyone any experience of using upgrade disks to move from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64bit? Will this difficulty with the unrecognized CD/DVD drive be a showstopper ? Can the upgrade from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64bit actually be done? Is there a tutorial for this type of upgrade?

When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only".
I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.
I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

Dec 24, 2012I have a pc with Windows XP pro 32bit retail version. First I have made an image, just in case. Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port).What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys

Downloaded it, put it on a disk also.
It will go through the start of the setup and copy files etc, and then it will give an error and say to install from a current version of windows I need to use the upgrade anytim through windows.
But when I go to upgrade anytime it asks for an upgrade key, but all I have with the purchase was a product key and it says that I can't use the product key.

Nov 30, 2009Customer dropped off a laptop telling me that his Windows upgrade had failed.
It's a new HP DV6 that had Vista pre-installed on it.
I've taken a look at it, and there's a "Windows.old" folder on the root of C:, which is of course a back up of all his data.
There's also a batch file inside the folder with the following inside of it:
"REM Dummy file for NTVDM"
I'm wondering if there's a way to "continue" the upgrade / merging process? He has asked me to re-install all of his software the way he had it. So i'm hoping there's an easier way to continue where he left off.
I know Windows 7 creates a "Windows.old" folder when upgrading from XP. Not sure why one was created for a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade though.
