Unknown CPU Usage Causing Stuttering Audio?

Feb 1, 2011

I've been having this problem where my CPU is constantly hovering at around 30% usage, and after investigating with ProcessExplorer and Task Manager, I've found that the process responsible for most of it is the "System" process in system32 (the description says "NT Kernel & System"). Unfortunately, nothing seems to be able to pinpoint what exactly is causing this process to be using so much of my CPU. The reason this is so annoying though is that when the System process reaches 15% or higher CPU usage (which is does pretty frequently), any sounds my computer is playing stutter very obnoxiously. This makes it really unpleasant to listen to music or try to steam videos with sound while my CPU is constantly spiking. how to troubleshoot this or some common causes of these symptoms?

Realtek High Definition Audio Causing Video / Audio Stuttering

May 11, 2011

Starting about a month ago, after six to seven months of my laptop working fine, I've been getting video and audio stuttering whenever gaming or watching most HD videos and after messing around with my drivers I realized that whenever my Realtek HD Audio drivers are disabled my video runs flawlessly, but when enabled both video and audio stutter. I'm using a Sony VAIO laptop so I'm assuming that the sound card isn't easily replaceable. I've tried using the newest drivers straight from Realtek's website and also the outdated driver provided by Sony's website, both of which result in the same stuttering. Sony has also replaced the motherboard once and it did not resolve the issue.I'm currently running Windows 7 with 6gb of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 330M graphics card.

Audio Playback Stuttering When High Internet Usage?

Dec 27, 2012

First of all, my config:

CPU: Intel pentium dual core e5400 2.7Ghz
GFX: Sapphire HD 6670 1GB gddr5
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-G41M combo (Award Modular bios v6.00 PG)
HDD: WD Caviar Green 1TB (EARX)
Network adapter: Atheros AR8151 PCI-E gigabit ethernet controller (NDIS 6.20)

I am experiencing audio playback stuttering. I checked if this is due to processing or ram usage, but nothing was wrong there as audio was playing well under high processing load and high memory usage. But recently, i found that when i browse internet or download something, it starts to lag. I am using winamp 5.63. I came to know that a few other people are experiencing this problem too, but i didnt find any solution.

Overheat Causing Stuttering In Game?

Jun 17, 2011

I was recently trying to play a game on my Nvidia 9500GT when it started stuttering intensely. I thought it was a processor issue, since it was reading at being under 100% load, but when I checked my temperatures, the CPU was barely under any stress while the video card had heated to 111 degrees. Sure enough, when I tried it again on a different game, the frame rate dropped after a few minutes and the card was heated to 113 degrees. I'm assuming the card overheating is causing the stuttering, but I wanted to be sure before I ordered any new parts.

D-Link DWA-552 Xtreme N Desktop Adapter Causing Stuttering?

Oct 11, 2012

My desktop d-link wireless card is causing my desktop to stutter. I have done a bunch of tests on my hardware / software / drivers, and I am sure it is a problem with the D-link card. I am currently at school where I have to connect to the internet using XpressConnect ( Cloudpath Networks - WPA2 )The stuttering effects the entire system (sound, video, keyboard/mouse, etc) and lasts for a few secondsdditionally, it only occurs when streaming video/music online, or when playing online games.I have updated the drivers, and I have installed the drivers without the D-link software using device manager and selecting the driver files from my computer.

May 26, 2012

sporadically my computer stutters in sound when listening music and whether or not i'm in game my sound and game stutters. my fps drops and it just sounds like bzazaghga. my cpu gauge also sporadically jumps and instead of being at 2-5% when i first initially bought it.sometimes it goes that low but it is usually at 20-30%+ now at average. at first i questioned i need more ram i only have 6 gb. then i thought i have not cleaned my computer since last summer so i recently cleaned it and the problem persists.when i play music through itunes or any mediaplayer such as Internet or windows media player it still stutters.( i still have not upgraded my ram to 8 or 10.)when my whole game or sound stutters my cpu gauge goes up, so i'm guessing its my cpu.i only have a standard cooling fan on my cpu.

100% CPU Usage Causing Choppy Frame-rates?

Aug 14, 2012

for about 2 months now, every time my laptop does something involving graphics (usually playing games or watching a video on Internet, or anything involving flash), i'll notice that my cpu usage spikes to 100%, which causes slowdown, i.e.: gameplay/videos will be slow and choppy, sometimes freezing for a few seconds to a few minutes before resuming. it usually does this in intervals, i'll have a few seconds of normal gameplay/video and then the freezing. considering that this also happens when i play offline games, i'm suspected that it's my graphics card that is the culprit.for reference, i'm using an ati radeon hd 3200 graphics display adapter on my laptop. i've tried updating the driver not too long ago, which ended up installing the ati ccc, but the problem still persists. i haven't had this before and the games/videos used to work fine.looking in the task manager, i see that its the application that i'm running that's hogging the cpu (either firefox for Internet/flash or even stuff like tf2 and maplestory).

Network Traffic Causing High CPU Usage

Sep 24, 2010

For the last week or so, my network traffic has seemed to be related to some pretty sever spikes in my CPU usage. These spikes are causing extreme stuttering in my music playback, freezing of my cursor, and other symptoms of a really laggy computer. This pretty much occurs whenever I use the internet in any way. The worst spikes are when I'm loading webpages in Google Chrome and seeding on uTorrent, often freezing my cursor and music for several seconds at a time, though they're not limited to those two softwares. More recently, it seems that when I am loading pages in a browser, it's spiking CPU usage in bother the browser and even more so in the System process. It's becoming a real issue to use my computer.

On a side note, I've noticed that the displayed memory usage in the task manager (2.74 GB) is way more than what all the processes appear to add up to, usually by more than 1 GB.

Ntoskrnl.exe And USBPORT.SYS Causing High CPU Usage

Nov 7, 2011

I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro x64 last week and I am already experiencing some issues. The most pressing is that I am experiencing stuttering after I have been using the computer for varying lengths of time. It can occur within a few minutes of first booting the computer or it can happen within hours. The time also varies depending on what I am doing, either normal internet use or gaming. I have updated all my chipset and hardware drivers and it was still occuring. So, I looked into it a bit more and found suggestions to run the xperf program to find my high CPU usage. It comes up with ntoskrnl.exe and USBPORT.SYS as causing the highest amount of usage. I also ran LatencyMon after seeing several suggestions for that program as well. It also comes up with ntoskrnl.exe as causing the highest amount of CPU usage. Aside from updating drivers, I have also tried reinstalling Windows a second time with no luck.

Stuttering While Listening To Streaming Audio?

Jun 13, 2012

Looking for ways to solve stuttering while listening to streaming audio, discovered that when stuttering occurred, System CPU usage was above 20%. At 20 or below, no stutter, although DPC Latency Checker might show latency around 150-200.Checked all drivers, etc, as suggested by DPC info box. Finally, tried stopping all services related to WD. Western Digital's file management software seems to be the problem. I did stop every one of them and have had not stutter for approaching half an hour. Stuttering was occurring every minute or so, lasting a moment, or several. This may not be the only problem, but so far so good.

HP Laptop Slows Down - Video And Audio Stuttering

Feb 19, 2012

I have a HP-DV6-6050 laptop, bought it last august. It was running fine up until a month or two ago. I don't recall what I did but I think it was the time I installed Dragon Age: Origins. Either way, I noticed some problems since then. Firstly it became very slow...even deleting files took longer than usual even of size 18 bytes.Programs and folder would take time to launch.

Secondly, which is a big headache, audio and video files now get stuck every 3-5 seconds while playing them. It is there evn in VLC player. I tried defragging, some kind of a memory test through diagnostic startup, and even returned the system to factory settings. Sometimes it seems to get better.. but only for a while. Also, the graphic card switching mechanism seems to be a bit buggy. When I plug in the power source, the dialog box to switch the graphic card doesn't appear.

Stuttering Audio/video When Maximize Videos

May 24, 2011

I'll start with system spec's to be sure I do not forget to post them after explaining:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3ghz
4GB of RAM
Windows 7 64-Bit OS
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+

I also run Dual Monitors, the monitors are the exact same model (which i do not have with me currently and don't think would matter, if needed i can get it)
(If need any more info let me know, I'll reply with it asap)

Now for the problem...

I have been using Windows 7 64-bit without a single problem on this machine since Windows 7 was released. Ever since then I have had no problems doing, well really anything until about 2 weeks ago. I usually play video games on my main screen whilst watching movies/streaming tv on the 2nd screen. The stuttering is constant when watching streaming videos in full screen mode, even when doing absolutely nothing else on my computer. If the video is not in full screen mode it plays fine. If I pop the streaming video out of the browser and F11 it to make it full screen that way it does not stutter at all this way either. I do not believe it to be a bandwidth/internet connection issue though as I also encounter problems when watching movies from my hard drive. The movies from hard drive issue is not exactly the same though. When watching a movie from my hard drive and playing a game the audio and video will skip about half a second every 4-5 seconds instead of a constant stutter. However if I am not playing a game or doing anything else on my computer the videos will play fine. I have updated my video card drivers and the audio drivers as well as bios on my computer but am still having the same issue.

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Sound Hanging / Stuttering

Feb 14, 2009

i just bought a new M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard to enjoy great sound in a foobar2000 + flac combination.

i've successfully installed the Vista 32bit drivers in compatibility mode and everything worked fine until then.

after starting to listen to music, i've experienced that from time to time (doesn't matter if i do something with the PC or just leave it there only playing music) the sound starts hanging (and it sounds like stuttering) for 1-3 seconds. then it comes back to normal...and a few minutes later it happens again. it's VERY annoying...

tried playing with WMP (wasn't happy about it) but the same happens.

tried vista 64bit drivers but couldn't install them. tried old Windows XP SP2 drivers, installed fine but no sound.

any1 got any ideas?

am i the only one who has this issue? did i buy a broken soundcard?

Windows Audio Service Causing Hard Freeze

Jul 30, 2011

Ever since taking my laptop back to bestbuy for Mobo replacement (I plugged headphones into the USB jack on accident, rendering 3/4 jacks useless), she's been freezing randomly. I've narrowed it down i hope. After saving an Audacity *.aup file, and trying to reopen it, she freezes to where the mouse no longer moves and a CAD is impossible. Found out that Windows Audio Service (or one of it's dependancies) were causing it. Upon stopping WAS, the file was openable, but not playable, for the audio device was shut off. The freeze is only triggered by opening that audacity file. Elsewhere, it's random, sometimes with audio playing, sometimes not. Audacity also sometimes crashes while recording. Tried to repair my drivers, but windows says they're all the freshest bunch of audio drivers there are for my particular device.

Windows 7 Recovery Disk Shows Operating System: Unknown On (Unknown)?

Oct 18, 2012

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

Ghost Shot> This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing restores from Ghost 15,etc. Anyway, ghost was backing up my system C: drive before last week. I have yet to even try and use Ghost to see if it would successfully restore my OS but I've been using it to backup my C: drive anyways. Prior to last week it could backup my C: drive fine. I might try a Ghost restore point from a few weeks back before this happened but not sure yet[CODE]

Computer Is Stuttering

Jun 16, 2009

I've been poking my head around in forums and websites for this issue already and i can't seem to pin-point the problem yet

I recently built my own computer and it worked just fine for awhile. But now it seems to have some issue because, at seemingly random times when the computer is running, it begins to stutter and slow way down. Any help at all with this issue would be awesome..

Resetting the computer seems to be a very temporary fix and sometimes it boots but and begins to stutter right away. I've checked the system start up programs and eliminated a lot of unnecessary programs because i thought it might just be the cpu getting bogged down when everything was booting up but to no avail. I've scanned for viruses, I've tried to go back to restore points to see if it was some software or updates i may have installed and it screwed up, but still nothing... it's just getting flustrating *sigh* Anyways, any help would be amazing.

New Installation Windows 7 Stuttering / Lag

Feb 9, 2012

I own a MacBook pro that is dual booting Windows 7 with bootcamp. Up until about 3 months ago I haven't had any issues. I run my Windows 7 partition about 99% of the time. However, in late November I noticed my computer would start to stutter. That is, no matter what program I was in (Firefox, Word, Outlook, watching a movie..didnt matter), what ever action I would do would freeze for a second or two followed by it catching up to itself. This is the case for the mouse if I was moving it, a webpage scrolling, or typing an email response. I originally thought it was just a virus and decided to wipe my hard drive and just start over. I reinstalled Windows 7 again, and I instantly knew my problem hadn't resolved itself. It is incredibly frustrating and is definitely affecting my productivity.I have tried everything I could think of to fix the problem- updated all the drivers I could think of, reinstalling the operating system again, etc.
