Remove Hardware From Safely Remove Hardware

Nov 17, 2009

Alright. So I finally got my new computer and slapped Windows 7 Pro x64 on it. Since my case has a slot to plug in an external drive, I used AHCI-mode to support hot-swapping. (And yes, I actually will use it)

Unfortunately, this has caused the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon to appear continuously in the system tray - giving me the option to eject my system drive. Being the minimalist I am, this useless icon annoys me to no end. Is there any way to tell windows not to add the HDD to the safely remove hardware menu (and thus make the menu disappear when there's no other devices)? I've been looking around and can't find any solutions.

I am NOT looking to disable the safely remove hardware entirely - I still want it to show up for other devices, just not the system drive. Also, I don't want to just hide it with the expand/collapse menu - call me picky.

Can't Remove USB Device Safely

Aug 13, 2011

Okay so whenever I need to remove my USB flash drive after updating some excel files, it won't allow me to remove it safely. It tells me that the device is currently in use and that I should close all programs but there aren't any programs opened. I can only remove it by going into the library and right click on the drive and select "Eject".

This only happens if I modify a file on the drive.

I recently installed Windows 7 and it's working great so far. But there's one tiny little thing that's been bothering me. There's an icon for Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, but the problem is that it's for my Samsung internal SATA hard drive! Is there any way I can stop it from telling me it's okay to eject it? Or hide the icon itself?

'Safely Remove Hardware' No Longer Working

Jan 28, 2011

I'm using Win 7 64 bit on a Vaio laptop that's less than a year old. Recently I'm having problems safely removing flash drives, portable drives and other devices. The SRH icon appears in the tray, but nothing happens when you click on it. Trying to eject from My Computer often doesn't work either, as the "eject" option is simply missing from the context menu.I tried an idea I found on the MS forums, of creating a shortcut to the Safely Remove dialog, but that doesn't work either.(Shortcut to: C:WindowsSystem32 undll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll) -- on at least one device, it claims the portable hard drive is not a removable drive.

No Devices Showing In Safely Remove Hardware

Nov 3, 2010

Just got windows 7 32-bit. I'm stuck on is that no devices are being shown in the Safely Remove Hardware Dialogue box. I know I have a device in..it's my MP3 player which I have just copied songs over too and I can play them. There is no icon in the systems tray either. I then looked around the web and found a page showing how to create a shortcut on the desktop to activate the dialogue box.

Point target to ":C:WindowsSystem32
undll32.exe shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll"

Created it, got the box up but no devices showing in it when the mp3 player was plugged in. Pulled out the mp3 player without removing safely first as didn't know how....not ideal.

Registery Change To Power Down Usb Devices After Safely Remove?

Apr 14, 2012

is it very highly recommended to do a registry change - USB Port Remains Active for Disabled or Safely Removed USB Device to power down usb devices like external hard drives after clicking safely remove on windows 7i started using windows 7 recently and the first internal hard drive which i used for external storage on the netbook - windows 7 became unusable after 4 times' usage. Later, I found out about external hard drives still spinning after safely remove or shutting down the computer , on windows 7.i want to protect my other external hard drives so, hence my question above.

No one around me did the registry change as they said that as long as safely remove feature is used, it is enough already despite that the hard drive is still spinning.i hope that i can find at least one person here who is very serious in caring about his/her external hard drives, to give me his/her input.I notice windows 7's usb issue started back in late 2009. I wonder why Microsoft never include its remedy - USB Port Remains Active for Disabled or Safely Removed USB Device in the updates. Is there any bad effect when using the remedy
