I have Windows 7 RC running on my laptop and I love it. I also just came into possession of an older machine that I'm interested in turning into a small file server running Ubuntu (also because I've always wanted to tinker around with linux). I was wondering though what would be a good solution for remote administration for this setup. That way I can just have the server running and pop into it when I need to to do work.
View 1 RepliesI manage like 15 computers, friends, family etc, and want to setup something like remote command prompt access so i can move some an installer for whatever or fix issues remotely without bothering them.I was thinking something like telnet, or SSH but not sure how much access that will give me to the computer, I already have the built in admin account setup for using remote desktop but I truly hate using that. I want to avoid using remote desktop because well it sucks unless you are hard-lined on the same main network. I really don't need to see what they are doing, which is why i want to avoid using teamviewer, i don't wanna have to call them every time i need to login to fix something, and i don't wanna accidentally remote in and see them doing banking or something else like that.

I get the error message "You must have System Administration Privileges to uninstall DivX for windows, try again". I only have one account set up on this computer and it's an administrative account. View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I made a standard account on my laptop Windows 7. I logged out of my administration account to go into the new standard account. It's the first time I made another account on this laptop and haven't seen before "other user" as oppose to seeing the other account user name in the welcome screen. I figured out how to get in to the standard account, but now I can't go back into my administration account. Every time I type in my administration username and password it tells me "the username and/or password is incorrect". I've tried to research how to fix it, but what I've found so far doesn't seem to work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have tried to sort through the Admin fiasco in Win 7, default admin, "real" admin, just plain user, plain as mud, only M$ could create such convolution. I have Win 7 Ultimate and really like it....BUT....with a 30 inch 16 x 9 display, DVI in, hard to get a sharp screen....fonts in particular are blurred. I have gone through true type, no help.
Part of the problem is the "default" fonts. I think I know how to change them, but, big but, I cannot unlock the administration blockage even logged in as Administrator. I believe that is the problem as there is the gold & blue shield and the actions I want to take are grayed out, thus you can't click on them.
I have read others have set up an Admin with a password only to screw up their installation and I am unwilling to risk that as I have my OS set up just as I want it other than the font issue. Also, same problem in using the format capability of Win 7 for a hard drive, the gold shield/grayed out "format" cannot be accessed, again even though I am logged in as Admin.
I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit, trying to use Windows remote desktop to connect to another PC in the LAN and install software. Right click on the .exe and choose run as admin. As soon as I do that I get a black screen with 2 white bars in the upper left hand corner(looks like a pause button). The user who's pc I am connected to sees the log inbox for the admin creds, how ever I can not get to it. How can I make that screen stop popping up?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Mini 110-1116NR, then deleted the partitions that had Ubuntu on them, not knowing that Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, and sets itself as the default boot for that system. Now that GRUB2 is not installed, since it was on my only HDD, it looks for the GRUB2 partition, which does not exist.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI know there have been a number of posts on this subject but I have been unable to find a solution. I have 2 Windows 7 machines, both running SP1.
My HP Pavilion is running 64-bit and my Dell Latiude E6400 is running 32-bit. I can successfully RDP from my Dell and even my Apple iPad (via an RDP client) into my HP Pavilion. However, the problem is that when I try to RDP from my Pavilion into my Dell I get connected but all I see is a BLACK from the Dell machine. The only thing i can see is the Status bar at teh top telling me that i am connected. A few moments later I get a popup message telling me that the machines have failed to communicate.
I have confirmed that RDP settings are identical on the Pavilion and Dell. I have even downgraded the Dell NVIDIA graphics driver to an older version based on the recommended version on the Dell support web site.
We have several remote systems that can all connect fine. I am having an issue with one box. It is a windows 7 home premium machine with netgear wireless nic. When I open mstsc to connect to a remote machine I put in the ip address and click on connect.I receive an immediate failure with the text "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again...blah blah"I have a server 2008 r2 with Network level authentication enabled. I have 8 other systems that are hardwired, at different geographic locations and all connect fine. I have not made any changes on the server side since this problem seems to be local to this client only. On the client I have made the following changes/observations. I have disabled the firewall, cleared the remote desktop cache, remove the MRU entries from the registry, verified that port 3389 is open via telnet. I have been bashing my head for days trying to figure out why this one box is not working. The problem occurs for every user on the box including the admin.I don't receive the box that prompts for warning if there is a server authentication issue but I think that is because I selected ignore at some point and said yes to continue. I'm not sure where that cache resides to delete that selection.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've downloaded Bluestacks to sync my android apps with my pc and it worked just fine. Shortly after I've gotten a request from Microsoft to run some updates which I've accepted. I left my workstation and when I came back 2/3 of my desktop icons had vanished and there were about 30 application error windows on my screen. The pc was blocked and only CTRL+alt+del worked, so I've shut down the pc. Since then nothing worked. I can't boot Windows 7, can't start safemode.The only thing that works is F2 (Setup) and F12 (boot options), but I don't get far there.Remedies: I've tried the following without success:
1) Rebooted W7 from the CD, ran the repair option out of which system image won't work and although I see system restore points (I have bi-monthly points), I get an error abort message. So no luck there
2) I've downloaded the Ubuntu 12.04 ISO on a UBS flashdrive and at least succeeded to get the initial Ubuntu screen but couldn't install (subinstall it under Windows 7 was suggested) and thus had no chance in recovering my files/docus/media. The computer goes back to the black screen with the blinking unusable cursor.
3) I've tried to follow the suggestion from your Tech JSntgRvr by downloading the "Farbar Recovery" program and execute it in the Window command prompt, but I get an error message that states:x:sources>i:frst.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. (with "i" being the drive where the usb flash was)So now I am out of my "very limited" wits.
Curious, is it possible to use Ubuntu to repair files in windows 7, like a copy & replace or add type of job?
View 2 Replies View RelatedBut lately my computer automatically scheduled a "chkdsk" during boot and it stops checking and i wait and a while later it shuts down i start it up and skip the chkdsk and starts up normaly and i login and after a while my mouse freezes i wait nothing works and the hard drive activity light is off. In Ubuntu i go to the disk utility it says there is a bad sector but i cant fix it on ubuntu. on windows startup features there is repair, safe mode, and others i tried going to the repair i click repair startup it says scanning for problems then it says it is doing something with the disk and never does anything.

C)Location for new partition 1)Beginning 2) End Question:Which one to select,1 is selected by default.
D)Use as Ext4 Journalising File System

I'd like to start by saying I'm not very good with computers. I'm a complete noob, infact. Which is why it probably was not a good idea to install Ubuntu. But now, I am trying to rectify this problem.So I popped in the full install version of Windows 7 Home Premium and booted from the disk. I got up to the part where it asks me to select a partition. One is something like 293 GB with no free space, and the other is 8 GB with no free space. It won't let me install on either, and the reason it gives is something like it's not in NTFS format... I don't know what this means.And if you do choose to reply, act like you're talking to a preschooler, because I am when it comes to computers.

When I try and install Windows, the installation goes through and then - just before it says 'Complete' - it says something along the lines of "Failed to make bootable" and then says press any key to restart.
When I try to install Ubuntu, I cannot select my preferred partition. And when I go into [Specify partitions manually] and select one, it says 'No root file system is defined. correct this from the partitioning menu.' And nothing I do can change this.
