Would a Pentium D running at 2.8ghz be much of an upgrade from my current P4 3ghz HT system? Also, how good is Windows 7 at managing CPU cores when it comes to software designed for a single core system? For example, would windows see that I am trying to run something (like say, Oblivion) that has a heavy CPU load and automatically send it to an unused core or would it be necessary to do that manually?
Quote: Barring any last minute delays, AMD is expected to finally launch its Bulldozer processor line tomorrow, as was reportedly confirmed by U.S. retailer Micro Center just over a week ago. That's good news for AMD fans. Even better news is the fact that these chips should come with plenty of overclocking headroom, provided you're prepared to push the pedal to the metal. I bought windows 7 32 bit to run on my pentium 4.the microsoft page said it could run it. when i put it in, it took 4 hours to install. the rate was 2.4 GHz. I now dont trust that page. I'm upgrading to a pentium d running at 3GHz. I would like to hear from people running or have used a pentium d.
I currently run a 3.0 GHz Pentium IV HT that runs well on XP. I think the processor was built especially to be run with that OS. However, I'm thinking about upgrading to 7 and while everything looks compatible thus far, I haven't been able to figure out whether HT will work with 7. Should I just stick with XP?
About a year ago, our Pentium D died and I was able to retain a few pieces from the machine, enough actually to rebuild it shortly.
My main question is this: I already tried moving Win 7 Home Premium 32bit from the Pentium D to the Pentium 4 and the hard drive crashed and with some heavy research, I discovered that this was not possible without a nuke and restart.
Please tell me there is some way to go from the P4 to the Pentium D when i rebuild it in a few weeks...? I've been reading that it may be possible if I uninstall all the drivers in safe mode and then move the hard drive to the Pentium D. I've also read that this is not possible with OEM versions, I just double-checked and our copy is retail upgrade from XP.
