Organizing Files And Folders Using The Context Menu
Apr 1, 2010
In this tutorial, we'll be using the context menu to move and copy files and folders. The context menu appears when you right click and as its name suggests, it changes depending on what context or situation it appears under.
When you have completed this tutorial, you should be confident with copying and moving files and folders around your PC and understand how to create your own folders and organize content on your machine.

I am trying to remove several context menu items for some file types AND folders.I've noticed that the right-click context menus differ depending on the file type, and also the folder type, depending on what type of files are in the folder. I've search far and wide, and have not been able to find software that will let me edit the menus. I've tried ShellExView and ShellMenuView but they don't list any of the menu items I'm looking for. I've tried every other software I could find. Does anyone insight into this? Is it impossible to remove certain items?

Okay, I'm not sure if this can be done as easily as I'm hoping. What I'm wanting to do is move already existing context menu items into a cascading context menu to organize and reduce clutter. For instance, I would have a cascading menu named "Scan with" and inside it would be avast! Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.On a side note, does anyone know how to remove the following context menu items?Computer- Show on DesktopControl Panel- Show on DesktopImages- Set as desktopbackground- Print Rotate clockwise- Rotate counterclockwiseMusic/Videos- Add to Windows Media Player List

I visit these forums alot, and ran a search just incase, yet was not able to find this anywhere. It's something I thought could be useful for some people You know how you can shift+right click on items in windows explorer to get added options? Well, the same command works on jump lists, except with some useful added functionality.I remember at least one forum member having mentioned that the reason they misses quicklaunch is that they could drag and drop files onto an app to open said files with said app. Well, although this doesn't completely cover that problem, as you have to use the keyboard, it sure does help.Lets say you have 10 images you want to edit in a program, but you dont feel like opening up the program and then searching for the files, because you already have the folder with the files open in explorer. Normally, if you right click on the item in a jumplist that represents the application itself, you only get a tiny context menu with 3 or four options. I was messing around and saw that if you hold shift while you right click, you will get a full host of options like one might when browsing in windows explorer. So if I want to edit those ten images in GIMP for example, I can select the images, right click and press copy, open the jumplist for GIMP, and hold down on shift while I right click on the GIMP program in the jumplist. Now the right click menu gives me the option to Paste, so I select paste, and voila, my 10 images open in GIMP.

Unfortuanteyl it seems to me that Windows 7 does not accept if users want to pin folders or files which are on removeable medias (USB-Sticks, DVDs, TrueCrypt volumes,...) to the TaskBar resp. Start menu.

A few minutes ago I highlighted a URL, right clicked in order to copy and the right click context menu did not open.
Unfortunately one cannot use Edit/Copy in the command bar for a URL.
I then attempted to copy random text from a web page and again no right click context menu. I was able to copy the text using Edit/Copy. I can also use Edit/Copy in notepad.
I also discovered that I have no right click context menu at all. I tried right clicking on the taskbar, the desktop, desktop icons, and in an empty space in my top command bars. Next I tried to copy the URL using SeaMonkey. Didn't work.
It worked earlier today. I have made no changes to anything that would cause this to happen. I really need the context menu. How do I get it back?
edit to add: I uninstalled the software for my mouse, reinstalled, didn't cure the problem. I did a google search and found an article by Microsoft which I followed but did not resolve the issue.

I'm looking for a replacement, preferably customizable, for the desktop context menuI really don't care for anything that's there save for the Display properties.I'm not necessarily looking for a shell replacement, like bblean or kde, rather just the context menu.

I would like to add a separator bar to the top (or anywhere) of the right-click desktop context menu. Is it possible? The picture shows "My Computer" at the top. Is it possible to add a separator underneath it separating "My Computer" from "View"?

I installed a program called Folder Size which I am mostly happy with: Folder Size - Freeware. Check the directory sizes and folder sizes on your computer with this freeware tree size analysis tool. However, it added an entry to my right click context menu everywhere which is bothering me. I can find no option in the software to remove it.

I found all of a sudden I had lost the function to Right click on a Folder and Select "NEW" Text Document. So I googled it and landed up here and found some .reg files to restore the .txt option in the Context menu and ran it and it worked Till the following day, then it was gone again?? I tried running the .reg again but this time it didn't do anything.I like trying out all sorts of Programs and open source stuff but with the result I end up reloading Windows every 6 months and I have a shed load of stuff on this small business PC of mine and don't really want to do it again for a while. (Yes I have Daily and Weekly Backups on a 3Tb Drive but it's a lot of work to restore it all)

Photoscape is my choice of photo editors. When I'm browsing through photos, and I want to edit a particular picture, theoretically I should be able to right-click on the photo to bring up the context menu, and then with the "open with" option, choose Photoscape as the program with which I would like to edit the photo. And if Photoscape is not listed, I should then be able to browse to it and open it with its executable file. Well it is never listed and when I browse to its executable (PhotoScape.exe) it will not open, it just sits there unresponsive, with the "open with" dialog box still open. I can chose another of the listed programs and that program will open, or I can browse to an unrelated program, Quicken, for example, and Quicken will open. There is nothing wrong with the Photoscape executable, because I can go into Windows Explorer and browse to that same .exe file, and it will open with no problem.

Is there a way to add a link to open Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 to my context menu on Windows 7 64-bit operating system? I am also looking to add Microsoft Word 2007, and Microsoft Outlook 2007 to that right-click drop down menu too. I would assume, I may be wrong, but would these be conducted or setup the same way like OneNote is? I use these applications a lot and it would make things a little quicker and easier.
I am looking to have it incorporated into the context menu using/running a script with a simple clean code (please no hex code) that I can run to make the quick accurate changes. I am also looking to add a small icon next for each Office program that is the actual program representation in the context menu as well. Please do not provide me the manual method steps to perform this function to the registry. Please provide a completed REG file attached to your response or a Windows System Registry script I can therefore make my own REG file from. I am not interested in a third party program either that would perform this action as well.

There are a few things MS seem to be missing the point on in Windows 7. One is the ability to quickly stick a note on the desktop by right-clicking and going to "New->Sticky Note". I remember adding something to the "New" menu in XP some time back so I'm wondering if there's a way to do this.

"extract all" is a standard context menu command in windows XP, Vista and 7. But this command seems to be overriden when one uses PowerDesk, replaced by the PowerDesk Zip/Unzip utility. I would like to have the option of the original windows command back in the context menu, but don't see any way to restore it.

I have just noticed an odd occurrence when i right click on Computer either on my desktop or the start menu & click Manage, it does nothing, just a timer circle for a sec and thats it. can run the Computer Management shortcut fine. I have had win 7 installed for a little while now and i know it was working fine up until yesterday.
I have seen others with the same or similar problem with running the manager from the computer context menus but the only answer iv seen is to do a repare install. There must be something better as how do i know it wont just happen again ? would any1 know what might have caused this? & if im really lucky how to fix it.

if some knows tweaks toAllow the use of the mouse scroll wheel to scroll the context menu when it gets huge with too many commands/shortcuts, instead of clicking that small arrow. Make the Windows Update Start menu shortcut open Windows Update and start Check for updates all at once.
