Install Windows 7 Upgrade On New Hard Rive Without Deactivating Windows?
Dec 29, 2012
I would like to install my Windows 7 upgrade on a new hard drive in my machine without first deactivating or uninstalling it on my current hard drive. I'd then like the new hard drive to be my primary, and I would like to slowly migrate programs and data over from my current hard drive (i.e. itunes music, "my documents" files).

What is the best course of action to transfer my retail lic. for Windows 7 home from one computer to another?
Here is the situation. I had Windows 7 on my Mac as a dual boot, and it was a upgrade from XP on the same partition on my Mac. I have since formatted and sold that Mac so Win. XP or 7 is no longer on it or anything.
I am building a new Windows machine I want to install XP on and then use my Win 7 home upgrade to install Win 7 on that machine. What is the best way to get XP and 7 deactivated from the old (nonexistent) Mac and reactivate on the new machine?
What a pain MS makes a simple situation. P.S. if I need to call MS what is the number?

Per microsoft I need to do try a repair install from original disk. Is there a difference between running repair install from Windows or booting from original disk then selecting upgrade install? Is one or the other preferred? Directions say both attempt to preserve installed programs, but not all drivers, and both require reinstalling all the 60 or so windows updates released after my disk. so no differences there.

Does anyone know whether there is a difference in performance between doing a clean install of Windows 7 vs upgrading Vista? Any better stability? I'm just wondering whether it's worth the trouble of the clean install.

I recently upgraded my computer with a new solid state drive and a fresh copy of windows 7, was previously running XP. The install was eventually successful and the computer turns on and runs fine. The old C drives (they were two disks linked together) is now listed as the F drive, but windows 7 won't let me access the drive, saying "you need to format this drive).I was worried that I had somehow broken them, I moved my system back to the original configuration (with the two drives in slots 0 and 1) and xp booted and ran just like it used to.

So I'm building a new computer completely from scratch, save for the hard drive, which I'm recycling from my old system. The hard drive currently has Windows XP installed.
My question is, can I upgrade the system with this? [URL]
Also, I plan to eventually buy a new hard drive. This presents a dilemma, because at the moment I can only afford the OEM or Upgrade versions of Windows 7. I read an article on PC World that claims there is a way to do a clean installation of Windows 7 using an Upgrade license. Here's the article: [URL]
Anyways, is that method still valid? Have any of you guys heard of it before?
I'm considering buying the Upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium, but I do not want to make the purchase only to realize later that I can not use it.
Really, I'm just looking for a solution. The only thing keeping me from buying Windows 7 OEM is the installation limits (can only install on one computer per license). When I get my new hard drive, I'd like to be able to use whatever version of Windows 7 that I own on it.

1. My sister has a Dell Dimension 5100 desktop computer with Windows XP from the factory. Can I put the Windows 7 UPGRADE version on a second hard drive in her machine? Is this OK or do I need the 'FULL' version?
2. Is this automatically going to create two options when booting the machine, giving her the options to boot either into XP or W7?

After I tried to make a dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), Windows now does not boot. I have tried to reinstall and repair the HDD but the disc fails to recognize my HDD (Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB). My HDD is Basic, has 3 primary partitions and 1 extended (3 logical). Ubuntu 11.10 can boot fine.

First I want to say that I use Linux (Mint and Arch) and am thinking of purchasing Windows 7 upgrade with a student discount. I have two legitimate serial numbers, XP and Vista, from previous computers I have owned. So for the "upgrade" do I have to have a previous windows Installation on my system (which I do NOT have) or do I just need the previous keys (which I DO have)? And if I do need a previous Installation.well I will cross that bridge if I come to it.

I am getting Windows 7 32-bits from TigerDirect because for some reason BCB does not work on the 64-bits version. I currently have an upgrade DVD for Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits and I am wondering if I can just use that to install Windows 7 and then apply the key from the OEM disc? Or do I need to unlock my Upgrade ISO for all versions of Windows 7? This is for a brand new system that I am building.

I've a customer whose Win 7 Home 64 bit won't install all the updates. He's got a list of ~24 updates that, when installed, results in error code 8007371b or 80073712. I've run SFC successfully with no errors as well as AntiMalwarebytes. Also ran MS Fixit 8025769253168492.4.1 which said it found 2 errors and fixed them (but it didn't really). Curiously, when I ran this util in Safe Mode, it reported back that two errors were found but only one could be fixed. Also ran MS Fixit 50123 successfully. Downloaded and ran the Update System Readiness Tool which found no errors to fix. Booted in Safe Mode and also in Clean boot. Still could not successfully install the updates. The Windows Update troubleshooter was run but it too didn't fix the problem.customer had tried the Upgrade route from an ISO he made and it ran to about 75% completion but then failed. He said the failure point happened when the upgrade was installing applications (???? ) or something like that.

I bought a new hard drive and win 7 upgrade disc (I do own a copy of win 98 and win xp upgrade so thats all legal) I put the win 7 upgrade disc in and it started to install it gets right to the bit where you need to put your product key in and then its says INVALID LICENCE KEY I ve tried and tried but thats all it will say (and yes I did un check the activate windows on line)
So I then tried installing my xp upgrade disc after it scans the hard drive it says please put your copy of win 98 in the disc drive to see if you are eligible for the upgrade (not exact words but you get the drift) after it checks it then it says put you xp disc back in the drive. but it wont install it just keeps going round in a loop doing the same things as above and wanting to re formate the drive all the time and asking for the win 98 disc.
I am now thinking of having to install win 98 then xp upgrade then win 7 (I want to use the 64 bit disc too) seems a bit long winded but I don't know what else to do. Its a bit of a pain because win 98 disc won't recognise my cd drive I assume because its SATA, anyway I have an old ATA/IDE cd drive which I ve just rigged up and win 98 is now formating the drive but its gona take ages.

I did a reformat of my hard drives, completely clean, recently, and reinstalled my copy of Windows 7 without problems. However, the activation did not go smoothly, my key is a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit UPGRADE key, and it told me that it couldn't be used.
I have read the other threads on this subject, but couldn't figure out if there was another way or not to deal with this situation, other than buying another copy of windows, or wiping again, installing xp or vista, and then upgrading. If possible, I would prefer to not have to reinstall windows, or move my files around, because I was borrowing the external drive I used to reformat the first time, and I'm currently in college.

I am currently running genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit), which has been clean-installed. I have now got a Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit I think) clean install DVD. I want to install Windows 7, but instead of a clean install, I prefer to just upgrade. Yes I know a clean install is always better, but I don't really want to spend time re-installing software and reconfiguring the whole PC the way I like it.
When I try to run setup from within Vista I get "This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows". I have done a Ghost image of my current Vista partition, so if anything goes wrong during upgrade, I am prepared to just do a full restore, like nothing ever happened.

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. I "upgraded" settings, files, etc. from my Windows XP Tablet Edition, 32 bit, using the tool that came with Windows 7. Everything seems to have copied over, including my user icon, but my directory under C:Users is blue and contains stuff that obviously carried over from XP, also marked blue. Here's the deal. I can't seem to install (some) software, such as Java. Java, for example, fails to find a file in C:Users[my account]AppDataLocalLowSunJava. When I check the file is there. Apparantly it's a permissions issue, because if I log on as Administrator then I can install anything. And yes, my account has administrator privileges. I've tried opening up permissions on every directory in that path, to no avail.I had to give my new PC a different name than my old PC so they could co-exist on the network, and after I transferred everything over I re-named the new PC to the name of the old PC. I've scrubbed the registry, changing every mention of the "new" name back to the "old" name, but that didn't seem to affect anything. I've run CCleaner and other tools, too.

I want to start building my computer ASAP but I would have to wait a little longer seeing how I would have to purchase Windows 7 for 100 bucks. However my school offers windows 7 professional for free to students as a upgrade download. Also I could pay 24 dollars to get a CD copy of it. Would I be able to save possibly 60 bucks by using this upgrade CD/download as the "clean install"? Or is it only good for upgrading from a previous windows -> 7?
For instance, I would buy Windows 7 Professional 64 bit from the site (it's labeled as an "upgrade" though) and pop it into my newly built desktop and just install windows using that? Is that possible? Also if I was to use the free download are there any ways for me to burn it onto a cd and use that?

I have a drive on a desktop that had XP on it, and I removed the drive, and formatted it. When I try to install Windows 7 to the clean drive, it says windows is installing everything, but all I get is the splash screen, and nothing else, no files or anything. I have tried this a number of times with the same result. I have an ASUS motherboard. (A8V). 2 GB of memory. The hard drive is a 500 GB Seagate I got about 11 months ago.

I am replacing my current hard drive with a SSD. I am also changing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. So, I guess you can call it a new system. What I need to do is install a Window 7 upgrade media on the new SSD. I will be using my Windows 7 upgrade media from a Family 3 pack Windows 7 upgrade media. I used this Family 3 packs to upgrade this computer on the current hard drive and two other computers. So, I have used it three times. According to everything I have seen I will need to do a double install to ensure that Windows 7 will activate. What I need to know do I need to activate Windows XP before installing Windows 7?
