Windows 7 File Explorer Deleted Files?
Jul 3, 2010I wanted to consolidate data from other disks that I had so I could use those disks to convert an existing Windows 7 installation into a RAID array. So I hooked up additional 2 x 500GB disks that contained files and previous installations of Windows and a 1TB drive to copy the files I wanted to keep. These two 500GB other disks were used for Vista in the past and both had been used as primary hard disks (ie they both had independent OS's installed).After booting up, I proceeded to browse through the disks and decided what I wanted to keep and what I didn't want to keep. I had to change permissions here and there to get access to the old Vista directories etc. All well and good so far.I have C: (Windows 7 installation), G: (old Vista disk) and F: (another old Vista disk). For all other installs including the Windows 7, I used the same username. For convenience sake, lets call my username billgates.So, C:, G: and F: all had directories USERS/billgates directories.Following this so far?When I browsed to F:usersillgates, I was seeing files from that directory plus files from c:usersillgates even though the location in windows explorer was saying f:usersillgates

Dec 23, 2012I wanted to install a fresh installation of windows 7 on my computer so I decided to load up my boot disc.
1. I deleted my partitions until I had a maximum of 233gb of free space.
2. I created a new partition from the free space. Windows setup suggested to make a primary partition of 100 mb.
3. System created two new partitions. One is primary partition (233 gb), the other is the system partition (100 mb)
4. Proceeded to install windows on the new partition created.
5. Copying windows files went from 0% to 100% instantly
6. Stuck at Expanding windows files at 0%.
7. Restarted my computer to boot up windows to see what's wrong.
8. Windows boot manager is missing, only thing I can do is reinstall windows but I can't
9. Can't do a startup repair cause it fails.
10. Did a cmd command for bootrec.exe /FixMbr and bootrec.exe /Fixboot and both operations are successful. However, still can't load up windows desktop.
Problem: I deleted my partitions and created new ones but I can't install windows onto the partition because the screen is stuck at expanding windows files at 0%. I got an error: 0x80070017. Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. I also can't load into windows desktop because bootmanager is missing.

Feb 16, 2011I Upgraded My Windows7 Starter To Ultimate Recently And Everything Was Going Fine, But I Wasn't Happy With The Disk Space Because I Had Ubuntu As Second OS And I Wanted More Space For Win7. ( Ubuntu Was In The same Partition As Win7 C: ). I Searched For Ways Of Increasing The Size Of The Partition But I Didn't Understood Them So I Deleted Ubuntu. The Space Wasn't Recovered (Unallocated Space) So I Still Searched For Ways Of Making The Partition Size Bigger And i Found a Way That Said If You Right Clicked The Gray Square Of Disk Utility And Click a Phrase That i Don't Remember You Can Show the "Resize" Option Of the Partition.i Did That and i Received a Notification Dialog That Said That Said That If i Do That All The Partitions (OS's, Files, And Drivers) Would Be Deleted And I Like A DUMB Clicked "Ok" At Next Restart There Was No Boot Manager, The Boot Just Loaded Again And Again. So I Installed Ubuntu Using a Bootable USB (Current OS) And There Was No "Install Alongside Other OS" Option. I Tried To Run Windows 7 Setup Again Using a Bootable USB, But I Get Stuck at The Part That You Must Select The Drivers Needed So Windows Could Read The Partitions. I Have The CD With The Drivers But i Have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 Netbook With No CD Drive So i Downloaded All The Drivers That the Factory Installs From Dell.com And Saved It on A USB But the Windows 7 Setup Doesn't Recognize The Drivers, It Only Recognize The USB But Not It Contents(Drivers).I Want To Keep Using Windows 7 And All Programs i Need Windows But It Seems Like Ubuntu Is My Only Option.

May 19, 2012Yesterday, I just reinstall fresh windows 7. After I install the OS, I just realize that my recycle bin is empty. Before I installed windows 7, some of my deleted files on my other hard disk is there. But now, I could not find it anymore. After that, I tried to select show hidden folder, files, and drives and unsellect hide protected operating system files on folder options. I try to browse to one of my hard disk, which has the deleted files on recycle bin before, then I found it the recycle bin icon there as well (For instance, the path of the drive is: N:$RECYCLE.BIN). I tried to look at the properties, and I found that the missing size of the deleted files was on there. The problem is I cannot access it. When I tried to open the recycle bin, it just empty. I need some help with this. How do I retrieve the files again to the OS recycle bin, not the hard disk recycle bin? Is it possible to access it again? I really need those files back.

Dec 31, 2012I am constantly running into issues trying to delete files--mostly .exes. It really interferes with many "autoupdate" programs like Steam and Origin. I have to use safemode to install updates... It also affects other things like compiling; I get occasional (essentially random) errors when the output file already exists and I want to overwrite it. I also can't delete the affected file(s) for a long time--often upwards of 1 minute. However, if I wait long enough, I can eventually delete the files.The error is always something like "you don't have permission blahblah." I have tried those unlocker programs, and while they can sometimes delete the file, an autoupdater (for example) can never actually write the new copy, even though I don't see the file in the directory.
I have tried running programs as administrator.I am using an administrator account.I have UAC dsabled.I am not running an antivirus or any program that should be interfering.I've tried changing folder permissions as per multiple guides I have read (some from this site).None of the above does anything..This problem has been plaguing me for almost 1 year. I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice in that time, and the problem exists from the get go. I have been using Windows 7 for over 2 years, but I never had this problem until my second to last installation. I don't know what changed.

I actually use Firefox but need IE for my work site. I have uninstalled it from Windows update several times and reinstalled without success. I then had the idea to download and install Explorer 8. Its only 64GB so I set Windows up so that the Users folder was on my seconday (X drive instead of my SSD, and setup a Program Files and Program Files (x86) on my secondary drive. I used this. I deleted the account I made when installing windows and accidenally clicked delete files as well. This deleted all of the data I had in my Users folder and many in Program Files and other places. I used Recuva, but now all of the deleted files are in one folder instead of their respective locations. Is there anything I can do aside from reinstalling and salvaging what I can and reinstalling all of my programs?

When I delete a file from either the desktop or a windows explorer window the file "appears" to not go away, but if I double click I get an error that the file cannot be found. If I right click and then click on "Refresh", THEN it disappears.

Nov 19, 2011My recycle bin does no longer retain deleted files and every time I delete a file it gives the warning that the file will be permanently deleted. Custom size of the recycle bin is 16375 MB; the option: don't move files to the recycle bin, remove files immediately when deleted is unticked; the option: display delete confirmation is ticked. This malfunction started after I downloaded a set of Windows7 updates. In the recycle bin there are still 3 files I had deleted as usual before the updating. I tried to go back to a restore point made before the updating but all the same the recycle bin does not keep newly deleted files.

When I returned the screen was scrolling in what I'll call dos mode and stating "critical error deleting file. I pulled the plug in panic before I saw what was being deleted and from what drive. I removed the second drive and rebooted no problem. Is there a log that shows what files were being deleted?

You know the procedure, deleting old files which are no longer relevant and deleting stuff that I no longer want and stuff that somehow I have repeatedly located in different directories, getting everything rationalised and organised.The sort of files that I am deleting are Word and Excel files, .pdf Adobe files, downloaded program files that I scan prior to installing, zip files and folders and folders containing files - nothing out of the ordinary really!A couple of days later I notice those damned files that I know I deleted, (and I made sure that the Recycle Bin was cleared out too), have all somehow been reinstated to exactly where I deleted them from.I do perform a backup to an external hard drive once a week. The drive is a Seagate and I am using the Seagate backup software, but this shouldn't be causing this - should it? I'm only backing up, I'm not asking for it to restore anything.

Aug 18, 2012I purchased an HP system with a 2T hdd running Windows 7 Home Premium. I purchased a 128gb SSD drive since I'm a speed freak. I am running a dual boot with 2 separate drives with Windows 7 Ultimate on the SSD and keeping the same setup HP sent me. The 2T drive will pretty much be used for storage but I want to keep the OS on it in case I have a warranty issue. On another note, I am also running on UEFI.After days figuring out how to load the Windows Ultimate on my SSD using UEFI, I thought everything was fine. Yesterday I loaded the OS from the SSD and transferred some movie files to the 2T HDD. Later on when I started the computer, chkdsk came on and it started deleting all the movie files I had transferred. Today I loaded into the 2T OS and noticed Norton Antivirus was corrupted. I uninstalled Norton on the 2T since I won't be using that OS much anyways. What I also did was go into the folder where I transferred the movie files into and changed the security to accept me as an Administrator.I have then loaded the files back and chkdsk has not come back on. What I am scared of is if it does it again in the future, I may lose everything. What I am going to be doing is moving my user profile on the SSD to the 2T HDD since my SSD is only 128gb.Is Norton the culprit?

I have run GetDataBack for NTFS on both and recovered a string of pst files that look to be the appropriate size but I have had to run scanpst on them to get Outlook to use the files. Only a small percentage of the files can be repaired and of the repaired files only a small amount of email (messages) information is actually returned to Outlook. Is this the result of some type of new and very malicious infection?
