Since we started writing about it, we said that the new taskbar is one of the best features in Windows 7. It has some very interesting new features & improvements which definitely boost user productivity compared to older versions of Windows. Therefore it is only natural for us to continue our series of articles about it. In this article, I'll show how to further customize different aspects of the taskbar such as: its appearance, size, location and toolbars.

Registry Hacks To Customize Windows 7 & Vista Start Menu & TaskBar Useful links: Ultimate Windows Tweaker - Features PC Tools Registry Guide Back Up, Restore, aintain the Windows 7 & Vista Registry While there are several freeware Windows Tweaking Utilities , like the freeware portable Ultimate Windows Tweaker ,available, there are some who just love to tinker with the Registry. This article is for those such. Most ot these tweaks are applicabe to Windows 7 too. Do remember that it is risky touching the registry and as such do back up the registry and / or create a system restore point first.To customize your start menu options, you have to modify the DWORD value data and set it to either 0 or 1. To modify the value data, you rt click on the name and select modify.
Then in the value data box, you set its numeric valueetting the value of respective DWORD to 1, means that it will have the effect as described in the Value NameSetting the value of respective DWORD to 0, means that it will have the OPPOSITE effect as described in the Value Name.If the DWORD ValueNames do not exist, you will have to create them. To create them, rt click in any blank space in RHS Panel > New >Dword value.The following are some of the recognized DWORDValueNames.NoTrayItemsDisplay : Hides the Task Bar notification areaNoToolbarsOnTaskbar : Do not display any custom toolbars in the taskbar QuickLaunchEnabled : Enable QuickLaunch bar display in the TaskBarNoSimpleStartMenu : Disabling it will force the Classic Start Menu NoStartMenuPinnedList : RemovePinned Programs list from the Start Menu NoStartMenuMorePrograms : Remove �All Programs� list from the Start menu NoStartMenuMyGanes : Remove Games from Start Menu NoStartMenuMyMusic : Remove Music from Start Menu NoStartMenuNetworkPlaces : Remove Network from Start Menu NoTaskGrouping : Prevent grouping of Task Bar items HideClock : Hides from the Task Bar notification area NoSMBalloonTip : Remove Balloon Tips on Start Menu items NoAutoTrayNotify : Turn off Task Bar area cleanup notification LockTaskbar : Lock the Taskbar and prevents the User from moving or resizing it NoSearchCommInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Communications. NoSearchInternetInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Internet History NoSearchFilesInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Files This list is not exhaustive. You can simply study the registry key's DWORD's, illustrated above and see that there would be many more such tweaks or hacks available. The ValueNames are roughly indicative of what they would do.
Take the example of NoRun. Its value is set at 0. If you open Taskbar & Start Menu Properties > Star Menu Tab > Start Menu > Customize. You will see a checkbox to Add Run command to the Start Menu. But if you now go back to regedit, and change the DWORD of NoRun to 1, and now go back to the Start Menu properties box, you will see that the item to Add Run itself will be missing ! So, enabling or disabling such options through Vista Registry, will allow or prohibits users, from executing such actions through the Properties box. Incidentally, there used to be a Registry Restriction Tool from Microsoft, which went on to become a part of the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit which went on to become Windows SteadyState. You may find SteadyState of interest. If you are interested in such Registry Hacks you may find this Registry Guide for Windows of immense interest. Well, on the lower left side of the taskbar, there are icon that make it convenient for you to go in for example "Internet explorer"... How do I customize the icon that appear here? I would like a "desktop page" icon and a "my document" icon to appear here.

When I start up my computer, the superbar takes like 40 minutes to actually work. And like right now, I closed a window about 10 minutes ago but the icon is still in the bar. I can't open it up or anything, it's just there.

I was using a program called Hide Super Bar (can't even find it online anymore) to hide my superbar when I was using rainmeter as my desktop environment. But now that I want to go back to default, I cannot get get my superbar back. There was only one .exe in the HSB folder and I clicked that and nothing happened. Also nothing happened when I uninstalled the program. I have already turned auto-hide off.

With vista and previous OS's it was easy to just right-click a program on the taskbar and hit the letter "c" to close it. you could very rapidly close a series of windows from the taskbar.
now in Windows 7 x64 when i right click a program in the taskbar and hit 'c' it simply highlights the "close window" option... requiring me to either have to hit enter or click on the selected option "close window"
is it possible to have things work like they used to ?? such that a right-click and then the letter 'c' would close the window without any additional input ?

Firstly, I have setup the Windows 7 superbar to never group programs and they appear similar to the way they do in Windows XP. I am now trying to figure out a way to get the programs to not "stick" together (e.g. when I launch firefox, all of the firefox icons open up adjacent to one another, instead of at the end of the last application that was opened).
I know this is probably a rare request because everyone seems to love the way the Superbar currently works, but I figure it never hurts to ask.
Also, I would politely request that if you intend to contribute to this thread with a response that is akin to "just get used to the new superbar", than I ask you to kindly ignore this post and continue along with your life.

somebody has ripped off the superbar for windows xp except that in xp it's fully transparent and i think it looks better. is there anything to make the ACTUAL superbar in seven fully transparent?

Earlier today I was pinning some shortcuts to the superbar (wordpad, My Computer, Godmode) and now, for some reason, when I open Firefox, Chrome, or Opera, the superbar won't combine the tabs together, so instead of hovering over the icon for the browser and getting the different tabs to pop up, only the open tab pops up above the icon. But it works fine for Internet Explorer, open windows folders, and wordpad/notepad. Those icons pop up the multiple open documents when hovering. But the browsers won't show multiple tabs when hovering.I checked the options for the superbar and it is set to "always combine, hide labels".

I can't seem to find the way to customize the Menu Bar, the one right above the Command bar. When I right-click on it, it gives me only the "lock the toolbar" option. It has the usual suspect buttons now, "File, "Edit", "View" etc, but I want to add Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete etc.
This was a 30 second process on Win XP

Got a Toshiba laptop and how to customized icons. My aim is to have icons only and wherein I can also replace the icon.

Is there a way to rename or create new sorting option with custom text ?there is a lot of categories, however i need to have my own custom labeled field then in the Detail view panel, by default, in the small size, there are these fields ready to edit:

- categories
- content status

I'm running the 7100 build of windows 7 and I've noticed a big change to how i browse around directories..
Now when it says what type of file each file is while in detailed mode, when i have several files all of which are videos, it no longer says which type of video file (mpg, avi, etc) it just says they are all video files.. how can i change it so it says the file type or even the whole file name like name.ext so i have some clue. I tried filename but it only shows the same info as name

In win xp, within any folder we had a toolbar which we could customize and put buttons for
cut, copy paste, delete etc. I am really lacking the delete function button. Its just too much work to right click, scroll down and delete what I want to.

I have bought myself a new lapto - Sony - with windows 7 64bit installed on it. My old systme also have windows 7 but only with 32bit. Here is my problem.n the old system I could take the option Properties by rigth clicking on any folder and change the Icon from the windows selection. However on the new Sony it wont allow me to do that. It does not even bring up the option to chage the icon.

Windows 7 shuts down my sound system after about 2 minutes. I can see the LED on my A-L speakers turn off. Any sound will wake it back up but if it's only a ping it doesn't wake fast enough for me to hear it. This didn't happen with this same hardware on Win2k (I skipped XP and Vista).I went through the Advanced Power Settings but under Multimedia I don't have an option for sound.I'd rather not disable power saving completely, so I'd like to find a way to prevent the sound system from going to sleep at all.
