View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my OS in order to solve registry issues retaining to the corrupted windows installer. When I try to enable the Microsoft SE, it would not work. I went into the control panel (Add/remove programs) and removed it. So when i try to reinstall Microsoft SE, I am getting weird error (0x8004ff82). I am not too familiar with the regedit, but I think the problem is a registry file.... I have already tried MicrosoftFixit, and it did not work.

I left my pc to boot up and it started into a check disc mode and all I get is the above message. I cannot reboot in safemode to restore, what can I do?
I recently purchased a lenovo laptop for home purpose around 1.5 months back. The laptop was having already microsoft security essentials (MSE) and mcafee antivirus plus software. Unfortunately, yesterday i was facing blue screen on death type of error (BSOD) error. On one forum, I found that it may be due to the mcafee antivirus software. So, I uninstalled the software as per suggestion. Why MSE was not able to detect this bsod error? Moreover, why mcafee, which itself is a anti-virus software, was causing this issue?
Morever, I want to install good free antivirus software. I am totally confused whether should I install the antivirus software or, the internet security software. Please throw more light on good free internet security software from longer perspective. (I just found that almost all free trials are only for 1 month only)? Moreover, why built-in windows firewall and microsoft security essentials (MSE) are not enough for detecting malacious software. Why extra internet security software or antivirus software is required ?
I recently bought a notebook PC, and was quite annoyed to find that Intel has magically removed the ability to change the Centrino N 130 wireless adapter's MAC address. Before the nutters get in here with accusations of "illegal" activity, I feel obligated to point out that there is nothing "illegal" about changing the MAC address on my own property. Briefly, I want to pose my notebook as a hypothetical attacker, trying to bump one of my other wireless devices off the router by assuming its MAC address. I don't really know what would happen if I did this, because, like I said, Intel artificially crippled the Centrino N 130 through its Windows 7 drivers. Rather paternalistic of them.Another benefit of the proposed experiment: showing the futility of MAC filtering in keeping out the "bad guys." I have been convinced of this for some time, but been simultaneously unable to demonstrate it to my own satisfaction. There is no substitute for actually trying something, rather than just reading about it.
I am also a little annoyed at the Centrino N's (lack of) performance. I have yet to have it connect at greater than 72 Mbit/s, even while sitting less than 10 feet from the router with a clear line of sight.FWIW, my router is a NetGear WNR3500v2. N wireless is enabled. As far as I know, this router is capable of supporting a full 300 Mbit or so 802.11n wireless connection, as long as the wireless NIC on the other end is doing its part (which mine doesn't).With all that in mind, can someone suggest an N-capable wireless NIC that is not purposely crippled by its manufacturer? I would prefer an internal mini-PCIe card, but Intel seem to be the only ones making those. Even a G-capable or USB device would probably serve the purpose, if that's all that's available.
I Windows 7 Home Premium. My windows is getting the updates but when it says configuring windows it doesn't do it and says it failure to config and is reverting back.I also cannot turn on Windows Security Center.I appears something happened 8/15. I tried microsoft's fixes and system restore which hasn't fixed the problems.[CODE]
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am new to Windows 7, I have home premium 64bit. I would just like to know if there are any simple tips (or not so simple) that I should use to make the system more secure than it is by default. Currently I just use a limited account and sanboxie, sometimes with firefox and no script. I keep away from obvious danger zones but I still like to keep secure.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a scenerio where I have to allow normal users on 3 tablets (windows 7) to enable and disable the wireless adaptor. They do not have a keyboard, except for the touch screen. This is only for testing, so it is temporary.I have the netsh command in a batch which will either turn off of turn on the adaptor. Problem is that these users cannot have admin rights to run the batch. I can select 'run as administrator' as a property, but that still prompts for a password. Is there a way to allow the netsh batch file to run through a local security policy, just for now?

View 8 Replies View RelatedWindows Security is blocking absolutely everything. I mean everything from downloaded and installed software to Windows core software and programs. The only thing it will seem to run is explorer.exe.Here is a screenshot of trying to open User Account Control from Control Panel. Sorry for the quality but I had to take picture on phone as can't take screenshot and upload as nothing will run.The original, slightly less, strange thing is the lack of running processes in Task Manager. Usually even on a clean new laptop then are half a dozen or more, from Windows own core stuff to manufacturer install rubbish. On this thing there is only the follow core services.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a virus (winupgro.exe). Afterwards, that program showed up in my task manager, but I was unable to end the process. I also got a notification that I would need to restart my computer in order to turn off UAC. Since I did not want to turn off UAC, I went back in, and turned the UAC back on. I then ran a virus scan with Norton. It didnt seem to find my virus, so I just shut down the computer.Winupgro.exe no longer shows up in task manager, but I cannot turn on Windows Security Center - getting the dialog box "The Windows Security Center service can't be started".Malwarebytes was able to find and remove it, but I still cannot open windows security center (after a restart).I used FreeCommander to run create md5 checksums. After searching the output file, I did not find any references to winupgro or its checksum string.
View 20 Replies View RelatedMe and my friend go this virus two days apart, and she'd been able to fix it quick within the day, I'm still having problems.I see fixes for it using MBAM, which I've tried. It's installed, but no mater what, I can't run it even if I name it mbam.com, or anything of the sort. Also, my computer won't go into safe mode. I can run it normally, but when I press F8, I can pick to boot off my SARA, or my CD Drive, but piking either of those just takes me to system restore, where I wipe my hard drive which I"ll only do if it's a last resort.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI attempt to connect to my wireless broadband connection but when i click 'connect' a windows security pop up arrives stating that I need to provide a username and password for 'Network authentication'. I dont have these nor do I believe that I have ever included these perviously. This action has only recently appeared and I cannot 'bypass' it. I have other computers linked to the same wifi connection and these are operating just fine (the problem computer runs Windows 7 and is the only one with Win 7). So at least I know that it is not the internet connection itself.Maybe not of any importance but this problem only occurred after the unit ran out of battery power and has not been able to access my broadband service since the subsequent recharge.I have visited Win 7 Network centre on the computer to attempt to establish the problem (it recognises I have one) and been through all the troubleshooting options but no resolution.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed W7 Professional with a Dell OEM CD that came with a Dell Optiplex PC, on a clone PC, as the Dell ended up with a burned up Main Board and was scrapped. View 9 Replies View RelatedThe laptop is an Acer Aspire 5732Z, the specs are:
CPU - T4400
RAM - 3.00 GB
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, no SP1 yet
the hard drive is about 250gb, with most of that space free, and just 1 visible partition.
It has 2 problems
1) It takes a long time to boot up, it used to be excessively slow in windows but removing Norton 360 seems to have solved that part. I can time it if needed.
2) A lot of the programs on the system are blocked by windows security, causing the orange "These files can't be opened" error message to pop up.
These include gfxUI.exe (the UI for the onboard graphics), the installer for Crap Cleaner, the installer for Service Pack 1, the add new user window, and a load of other files I don't have a list of. There's only 1 account on the system, and it's an admin account. I've tried to use the run as admin option where possible.
Here's what I've done so far:
- Reinstalled intel graphics drivers, no effect
- Ran a startup repair, after an hour it hadn't loaded.
- Uninstalled norton 360, system speed improved by several hundred times, otherwise no effect, and bootup time still seems as long.
- Gone into windows firewall and reset all settings to default, no effect.
- Tried to change the settings in internet security, set everything low except for my computer, which is locked, no effect
- Gone into internet security and clicked set all zones to default, no effect
I tried to install SP1 (after failing several times before due to the system being too slow to install it), security blocked it, then apparently deleted the installer. I tried to make a new user account, to copy the registry settings for the security to overwrite the faulty settings on the main account, the new user account window was blocked by security.
In a cmd window run as admin, used command
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%infdefltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
gave a progress report, completed, no effect.
I backed up important data, tried to reinstall windows from scratch, the installer doesn't load, after clicking install now it just starts loading and doesn't stop. At this point, I thought it must be a hardware issue, so I tried to run some diagnostics from a bootable CD. It wouldn't read the CD.
