I am using 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop, found it was a bit slow.Goto Disk Defragmenter to analyse, 5 % fragmented.But I still go ahead.It had gone 5 passes, relocate...etc.Then looks like stop at Pass 5: 0% consolidatedIt's been 40 minutes unchanged up to now, still 0% consolidated.

I saw some random article about a hotfix for this issue and downloaded it but I guess I already had it installed as the installation wouldn't proceed, but instead said it wasn't for my computer. Should I look towards another software backup program?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had two issues with this laptop - first, my battery was no longer accepting a charge unless i turned the laptop off, took the battery out, put it back in, then turned the laptop back on again.I seem to have fixed this issue by updating the bios. It has been charging normally for a few weeks now.The other issue has me completely stumped.It has been doing this for several months now and just seems to be getting worse. When I put this laptop to sleep... if i open it up within an hour or so, it wakes up just fine in no time. If i put it to sleep (it is set to sleep when the lid is closed) and then wake it up the next day (or longer), it takes up to ten minutes to find itself. It's the strangest thing. The screen comes up right away, and you can see all of the programs running - but the system is thinking and thinking and pretty much unresponsive for about 5-10 minutes each time. It's like it has lost itself and takes that much time to remember what the heck it was doing last time it was awake. Once it finds itself it's perfectly fine again.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I right-click on the desktop it takes forever just to load the right-click menu. The desktop freezes but other applications works fine (i.e. WLM, Chrome). I tried Googling but can't find what I wanted. I found a similar problem, but it was from 2009 involving NVIDIA graphic driver problem. --> This. On a side note, my NVIDIA Control Panel also can't execute. Does this have any connection with my problem? I last updated the drivers with this.

Having a problem with Windows 7 in that it takes forever to load and the network icon spins and spins. In a about 15 minutes everything returns to normal. If I go into safe mode with networking it loads very quickly. Have tried to disable all non-MS services does not make a difference. Have also tried normal and selective startup. Check for latest drivers/firmware updates. Performed the usual cleanup and check disk. SFC did not find any missing or corrupt files. Scanned and removed malware. Waiting for it to reload to look at event viewer logs.

charger wire has loose wiring showing and if the black wire touches the red wire the computer completely shuts off, and when you turn it back on you have to go through the whole re-start process and lose unsaved documents. Plus when you run it in the normal mode it takes forever to load anything, and a little window keeps popping up saying "microsoft windows is not responding." but when I run it in safe mode, it works fine. what's wrong here?My theory is that the charget has been short cerciting (i know i spelled it wrong, forgive me) so much that it's been causing damage to the motherboard,
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Ineternet Explorer 9, the first page takes about 30-45 seconds to load. IE 8 was instant. Its the "Washed out look" with the spinning circle for a bit, then finally loads. After that every page loads quickly. What I've done:
Disabled all addons
Ran "without addons" version
Tried about:blank start page
Tried software rendering mode
disabled third part browser extensions.
reset all internet explorer settings
disabled Norton 360
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
From day one after a fresh install on my then new machine i've noticed this. The welcome screen hangs for about 1 minute if i use a solid color for the desktop instead of a background. I fixed it about a year ago by using a background instead of a solid colo. I however hate backgrounds and much prefer black. So i made a solid black jpg and used that. Well, long story short, i think that background makes it take forever sometimes when opening a picture in windows photo viewer ! Fix one issue, the fix causes a new one. Welcome to the world of MS windows !!! I removed the background and pics then opened up immediately. So i seem to have a choice of either quick startup and slow jpg's or visa versa.
PS: the startup issue is obviously a bug in Windows 7, and i know this because I've had it happen on 2 other PC's.

If I try shut down, it usually shuts down after a long long log off OR it freezes in logging off. It is really annoying and I tried to clean up my system, registers and it didn't work. [code] My computer randomly freezes (even as I was writing this post it froze for a while and i had to wait for it to come back to life). I am not sure why this is happening as it has been great for over a year. Also the when I put it to SLEEP (not hybrid or hibernation) it takes a LONG time (over 2 mins to hours).I have restarted my computer 5 times yesterday and a couple times today, because it just stops working. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 home premium 32bit on a pretty fast AMD phenom II x4 with 4gb ram. The problem I ahve is with windows explorer. When I click on a drive, it takes about 5 seconds before it will show me the folders. Then when I click on a folder, I have to wait as a little hourglass-type slider goes across the top of the screen before it will show the contents. This can take anywhere from 2-15 seconds. I don't remember any other windows OS doing this.Is there something I can change to help speed this up? Not sure that it matters, but I checked defrag and most of my drives are less than 5% fragmented - the most being 15%.
View 2 Replies View Relatedhave been struggling with my system taking 2-3 minutes to find drivers for any memory stick I plug in to any of 3 USB ports on my Acer 1810T. When the process finally completes, the transfer speeds are about 1MB/s or less.Another (possibly related?) problem is when I insert any SD card in the dedicated slot for the first time, everything is fine. Once I remove and either re-insert (or insert a different card), nothing appears. I get a message saying "process is already in memory". I have to reboot to get things working again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I turned on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite P855-S5200) and got some sort of error screen, and then it brought me to a screen asking if I wanted to do a system repair or start windows normally. I chose system repair, but then it seemed to get stuck in that process (It was taking forever and nothing was happening), so I turned off the laptop (I know, big no no), booted in safe mode, and did a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. The "starting Windows" screen came and went, no problem. Everything seemed fine till I got to the User Selection screen (the default blue one with the little hummingbird or whatever). Then it just sat there on that screen. I could see the hummingbird and the little squiggly lines, but there were no buttons to click my user. I just let it sit there, and after about 5 minutes, the user names popped up, and I was able to continue using the computer without any problems, no other speed issues whatsoever. It now makes me wait every time, always about 5 minutes, before the user names pop up. It does this when I restart the machine and when I try to switch users.

looking for ideas on how to fix this problem.
while installing 7 H.P. it gets to completing installation then freezes up after computer reboots a warning message appears stating windows 7 has failed to install and resume after reboot, and then the same warning message appears.
I tried the roll back installation option and a message flashes on and off to quickly to read.
and Vista will not come up to start over.
any Ideas on what to Do?
I successfully bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium N, downloaded and extracted it and now I want to install it.
When I choose UPDATE in the intallation dialog it tells me that I cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium ???
Every website from Windows and other people tells me that it IS possible and even the Windows 7 Update Advisor told me that I should not encounter any problems upgrading.
Has anyone of you yet encountered upgrading problems of compatible Vista/7 versions?
Or any other idea what I can do to solve the problem?!
I know that I can make a clean intall of 7, but this would be a pain..
Yesterday I was messing around on my brand-new laptop, and I was stupid enough to try a keygen to get Ultimate (I had HP). Surprising. It worked but the copy wasn't genuine obviously. So then I rebooted, pressed F8 at boot. An ran Toshibas recovery to try to get the computer to its out of box state. I got stuck at initializomg (either that or I was impaptient) so I turned off the laptop. Then when I truer to boot I got bootmgr is missing. I have an old vista Hp disk so I installed that for the time being. So my question is, how do I get it back to the original state? I do t have any important data or anything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe original OS was Windows XP 32bit SP3. I upgraded this system to Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit SP2 with no issues.
I then went to upgrade the system to Windows 7 Premium. I chose the "Upgrade" install and not the "Clean" install. I've checked the updater to confirm that all my system information was adequate. I uninstalled the ATI Catalyst Controller, iTunes, etc. that it wanted me to. Oddly enough, the ATI Catalyst Controller was the most recent driver that supports Windows 7.
I checked online to see if the hardware was all supported by Windows 7. The Sapphire Vapor-X video card was not compatible or compatible... it simply wasn't on the list of either. The X-Fi Extreme Gamer said it was NOT compatible... yet, I had a driver for Windows 7 and the Windows 7 Application checker said that my sound card was ready for Windows 7... thus a discrepency.
I went on with the installation. I get to the last step where it resets the computer at 62% and I get a BSOD for about 1/3 of a second. It goes by too quickly for me to capture it. It then restarts the computer instantly with the result of "Upgrade was not completed successfully. Restoring prior OS yadda yadda". I've gone through this about 5 times now trying different things.. keeping the Catalyst controller installed, uninstalling the video card, removing the sound card, etc. Nothing seems to work.
It was recommended to me that I do a clean install... however, I have read that many others have done a clean install and theirs STILL doesn't get past the 62%.
Is it my hardware? Do I need to buy MORE hardware now that 7 is out that is on the compatible list?

I have sort of a special case here. I purchased my HP laptop in Thailand, and much to my chagrin it came installed with Windows 7 Home Basic. In addition, the HP store which sold me the laptop installed 4gb of RAM neglecting to tell me that the 32bit version of 7 only supported up to 3. At any rate, I am hoping to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit edition.But while there is a glut of information online about how to upgrade from Starter, there is little to nothing about Home Basic. Do I have to buy a full copy of 7 Home Premium 64 Bit? Can I buy an Anytime Upgrade that is meant for Starter and apply it to my computer?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 on a desktop with the OS loaded on an Intel 160GB G2 SSD as C:. I've noticed that Defrag is happening on the SSD drive. I've confirmed this in two ways: First, looking at the Last Run date in the Disk Defragmenter UI. The date associated with the SSD drive C: continues to move forward. Second, I've looked in the event log and have confirmed that there are messages stating the successful defragmentation on the C: drive.
I have 3 drives in my system. The SSD drive is C:. I have 2 WD 750GB drives as D: and E:. If I look at the Defragmentation Schedule UI, only drive D: and E: appear. Just to be safe I turned off Scheduled Defragmentation and Defragmentation has stopped on D: and E: but continues on C:.
Looking at the event log, there seems to be no discernable pattern as to when the defrag happens on the SSD:
I can't find any place to stop Defragmentation from happening on C:. Any suggestions?
I am going to be buying a new laptop in the next few weeks, but would like to query about upgrading from the shipped 32-Bit OS to a 64-Bit version.
The laptop I am considering is the HP Pavilion DM1-4020sa (4GB, 500GB, 1.65GHz), which comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 32.
My questions are thus:
1 - Is it possible to upgrade easily to 64-bit Home Premium from the 32-bit version supplied, or does it require purchasing discs?
2 - If I upgrade to Home Premium 64-bit, can I use the same product key as provided with the laptop, or is a new key required?
If I cannot upgrade to Home Premium 64, I will consider using my student status to get a good deal on Professional or Ultimate (via software4students):
3 - Is it possible to use the retail "Upgrade" disks to upgrade from one Windows 7 version to another (In this case HP32 to Pro64), or is that strictly for upgrades from previous versions of Windows?
Had Windows 7 home premium for around 2 months on a brand new desktop. Never had a single problem with it untill today. Turned it on as normal, got to the log in screen where i click on the required user. As the pc is only used by me I only have 1 user availiable. I click on it like normal but this time i get a message saying 'The user profile service service failed the logon' 'user profile cannot be loaded'. It then refreshes the page and returns me back to the logon page and if i press enter the same thing just keeps repeating itself. Other option on this page are the shutdown/sleep/restart option and a little box in the bottom left corner called ease of access with various options, but none that seem relevant to the situation.

I had it in hibernate and as I flicked the lid up it shut itself down - I assumed for updates. Nothing happened.I turned it on, started windows normally as it hadn't shut down properly and waited for the log on screen. It hung on "Please wait" for about five minutes with the circle going round and round and round, then nothing, just the home page no user no password no log on. I turned it off and turned it on again while Google'ing for answers. Seeing as I haven't been able to log in at all a lot of the answers I haven't been able to try, so far I have tried: to boot normally and end up with the hanging screen.booting safe mode, it loads files, finishes with windowssystem32DRIVERSCLASSPNP.SYS then restarts and I'm back to square one.booting in safe mode with networking and command prompt - same as above. F8, repair, system restore, tried all points with errors:System restore failed to extract the file (C:) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore (0x8000ffff) [code]I downloaded Windows 7 about 18 months ago from a student offer while I was at university - I was sent a CD/DVD and put it somewhere very safe, so safe I don't even know where it is!If it is any help, I also hear a ticking noise from the laptop when it gets to the start up screen just as it begins to hang, it then stops and I end up having to turn it off or it restarts itself.
