I Have a HP Compaq 5500 Microtower Business desktop. It currently is running Windows XP Professional SP3. It has a 3.0 GHZ Intel Pentium 4 Processor in it with 1 GB of RAM. It is current joined to My Home Active Directory Domain. I was Thinking of Upgrading the RAM to 2 or 3 GB & putting Windows 7 Professional on it & Re-joining it to the Domain. Do you think it is worth upgrading?

It's an HP Compaq Presario V6000 series,v6205 according to the limited tech support I received. The laptop was purchased in '06 and originally ran Windows Vista, however I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit a couple of days ago, and have had an issue finding compatible drivers, namely a driver for my nVidia graphics card. HP's website has the drivers for XP and Vista, but want to charge me to get 7 compatible drivers (59.99 for a one-time use). I've read on other forums that it is possible to take the non-manufacturer drivers and modify the .INF files to work, but I'm inexperienced with that sort of stuff. The card is an nVidia GeForce 6150. If there are any other details I've left out, I'd be happy to add them. EDIT: In the event that I can't secure the proper drivers, does anyone know if Linux is an option for such a machine? Or would the same driver issues be present?

When I run Windows 7 Enterprise "Install Now" from DVD the screen will display "setup is copying temporary files" followed by "setup is starting" then a pop up dialog box called "Install Windows" stating "Windows setup cannot determine if this computer supports installing this version of windows"
Windows Upgrade Advisor runs clean stating Upgrade available.
The time between the copying screen and starting setup is seconds where-as if I boot into the DVD the copying process takes minutes.
I'm performing this as a precursor to company wide upgrade and the outcome will have a major affect on our direction.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using NVidia GeForce FX 5500 256 MB RAM on my home PC. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC and everything worked smoothly including Aero to the highest quality where drivers were from Windows Update. Now, I got licensed Windows 7 Professional. When I update the driver from Windows Update everything works just fine until I shut down the PC and turn it on again. When I do that after OS finishes loading, screen suddenly goes blank. After like 2 minutes, system gives a blue screen and restarts. This time Windows successfully makes it to desktop saying that Windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown. When the report is prepared it says something went wrong with the video card drivers. The same thing happens even if I install the latest drivers for Vista directly from nVIDIA website as there is no Windows 7 drivers for FX 5500.

Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port).What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys
3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?
a few months ago at Christmas I got a new Windows 7 Compaq Laptop. It ran well, and I mainly used it for the internet; however a few days ago I tried to insert a Blank Disc in the drive so I could burn a home-video onto it. However the computer didn't read it. Nothing happened. I went into my Computer and it wasn't there. So I reinserted the blank disc into my mother's computer, which is an XP Computer, and it worked fine. Baffled, I thought nothing of it until today, when I tried to insert a PC game I brought. The computer started up, as though it was going to run - then nothing happened. I went back into My Computer, and no DVD/CD Drive showed up, no autorun...it didn't read the disc.
