When I put my computer together, I decided that an 80 GB drive would suffice for the C: drive as the only stuff to be stored would be the operating system and programs.However, the size of C;Windows seems to grow without bounds - it is currently consuming 31+GB, which is simply ludicrous.

When the system is idle and not even running Steam or Firefox, memory usage is 1.00 GB out of my 2.00 available. I run FRAPS and DisplayFusion (I have two monitors) in the background but they amount to roughly 20MB.I have also disabled most non-essential services as well as unnecessary boot programs. Usually I have ~45 processes running, 15 of which are user processes.I have already made efforts to streamline my OS, and the total memory usage of all my user processes amounts to just under 400 MB (with Firefox and Steam running). That's nice, and it's about what XP idled on.What the hell does Win7 do with 500-600 MB of phantom memory?

My Win 7 (64 bit) computer with a Intel i5 760 CPU, 4Gb of ram and AT Radeon HD 7500 Graphics card has developed a problem with about 25% constant CPU activity and constant disc activity. Task Manager shows that this is due to the "NT Kernel and System" process, and it can't be stopped. The surprising thing is that I get exactly the same problem in Safe Mode with no connection to the Network, so what the heck is going on?

I am looking at a 1TB disk, which with partitioning considered is showing as a 931GB disk - however even though I am using only 421GB of the disk space Windows 7 (Explorer) is showing that there is only 202GB free on the disk.As you can see above I selected all of the files on the disk, right clicked, selected Properties, and the results of my enquiry are shown (superimposed over the Explorer view).

I have 331 GB left, but I am curious as to where the usage of that amount of hard drive space is coming from. I hardly have any programs because of the clean reinstall and the current program sizes are no where near that capacity. The videos and pictures I transferred over combined it about 50 GB. Where is the rest of my disk space? I would like to clean my hard drive as much as possible. Restore points are also limited to using 10 GB as max. I have run CCleaner and Puran Defrag at least twice.

With the Packard Bell motherboard, after switching on the PC all applications start to power down on RAM use after 2 minutes, and this is shown in Task Manager/ Processes as it happens. With the ASUS motherboard, there is no powering down of RAM use, but a powering up instead. Running the same applications, the Packard Bell usually settled at 550MB in Performance/ memory; the ASUS is 1.01GB. Why is this?

View 0 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that was running fine for a year or so, but now its been a couple of days and after an hour or two of use, it slows down and finally freezes. I don't know what it is. The clues I have include:
-I've run memtest86, no errors.
-I've scanned the whole system with 4 different virus programs, so not a virus.
-But I've noticed that rundll32.exe has been using a lot and I mean a lot of resources. After a couple hours, nortron tells me that it has high disk and cpu usage. I checked core temp, 100% on all 4 amd phenom 955 cores. I don't get it.
Specs are:

I have a Dell Workstation (Optiplex 760) with a fresh install of Windows 7. Right from the get go, I noticed that the second core is running around 20-30%. Taskmgr is not that helpful so I installed Process Explorer. While reviewing the cpu information, Hardware Interrupts bounces between 20 and 35%. I downloaded RATTV3 and created a log file.
After 5 minutes I checked the log file but to my disappointment the "Cumulative Histogram for:" is blank. It gives me all the information except the culprit!!! (bangs head on desk). After visiting Microsofts RATTV3 site, it states there is a known bug with vista and windows 7 in regards to displaying a blank value.
Is there any application available that can tell me the file name (drivers) that is causing the excessive hardware interrupts?

Windows 7 installed all drivers except HECI and SOL (AMT). I installed these which were available on Dell's website. Before these drivers were installed, I was still experiencing the second core cpu excessive usage.
There is nothing in task manager that points to high cpu usage (which is why I am using process manager).
I tried disabling common devices to see if the usage would drop down (all communication ports, NIC, Audio, HECI, SOL).
Whenever I start my windows hard drive led is constantly on and my laptop is slow as hell. If I continue using it sometimes I get blue screen but always I have to restart at last. Second time I boot it's ok. I disabled all unnecessary services. I had got the same problem with Vista. Now I upgraded to this. 7 was working fine but now the same problem is back. I use acer aspire 6920 with 4g ram and 250gb western digital. 2.00 Ghz core due.

But inserting a picture increases the overall email filesize excessively. Attaching (not inserting) a 32k picture with nothing else causes the email to be 44k in size. If inserted, the email is 89k. In our situation, we're inserting multiple pictures, interspersed within text. These email sizes become very large. That's a problem as some recipients are still on very slow dialup. From my research I'm not sure but suspect WLM is both inserting the jpg in the text AND adding it to a slideshow. I'm not sure about that

ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)
versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)
browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.
normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).
I have had my laptop for around a year now, and it's always been pretty fast for a cheapish laptop, It's an advent modena m100 in blue, but recently it has started getting real slow, like my CPU Usage is at 100% all the time and my Physical memory usage is running quite high aswell, without even having any programs open.

If I keep using it, the memory usage will slowly increase until it reaches 99%. If I boot up the machine and just leave it there for a couple of hours, the same happens.I try to restart (via windows), it logs off, shuts down the system, the coolers keep spinning, the motherboard lights are still on, but it doesn't boot up again. It remains like that. I have to restart via reset button or power button.

My Audiodg.exe process is currently using 2,786,070 kB (not just normal bytes, kilobytes) of Ram. 2.66gb+ of Ram! I have searched the web as well as this site for any problems. My audio is working fine though... I have no idea why this using so much ram. Im guessing a memory leak of some kind... I restartand it starts off at a normal pace...

Then I created my System Repair disk (single disk). Does this disk include all software and windows updates that were on my computer at the time I created the disk? I have read that System Repair disks will only have the factory settings of Windows 7, but I don't know if this is the case for all System Repair disks or only those that came with the computer and were made before the computer was purchased?I've also read that a System Repair disk could include a system image. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been having a bit of trouble with windows 7 lately, namely that it won't start up right. When I boot from the drive normally, it gives me the classic "BOOT DISK ERROR: INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" message.
However, I soon discovered that if I boot from the Windows 7 cd and do not boot from it (By ignoring the "Press a key to boot from CD or DVD..." Windows 7 boots up fine.
I've tweaked my BIOS over and over, but the same problem persists. The drive is brand new and fine. What can I do?
