Dualboot With Windows 7 And Upgrade Version Of Windows 8?
Oct 27, 2012
So I bought a Win7 PC during the promotion period where I have the option to upgrade to Windows 8 for $15. I am wondering if I could do the upgrade as a separate operating system on the same computer? Meaning that I would have Win7 and Win8 on the same PC in case something goes wrong on Win8.
I was thinking I could back up my Win7 first, install Win8 on one SSD and then restore Win7 on another SSD.

So I installed a beta version of W7 Ultimate and it's displaying a watermark that says "this is not a legit version". I never had a legitimate product key.I want to purchase a real version and upgrade appropriately. Can I purchase an Upgrade license to Windows 7 Ultimate or do I have to purchase a Full version? Also, what if I wanted to install Windows 7 Home Edition instead of the Ultimate version. If I did this, I assume I would have to install the Full version correct?

I need to know if I can use a clean install disk for Windows 7 Ultimate to upgrade from Vista or if I have to use an Upgrade version?
I'm leaning towards buying the clean install disk so that if I should loose the hard drive at some future point I could just clean install Win 7 Ultimate from the disk without having to first install Vista and then upgrade.
Regardless of which type I purchase, am I better off to buy the OEM disk from the machine manufacturer (Toshiba) or just purchase any OEM disk? Of course, if I want Microsoft support then I need to purchase retail disks.

I was stupid enough to purchase a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate full version for my computer from someone on Craigslist. This copy was brand new and sealed. I thought it was legit. I completed wiped my computer clean and installed the software. Everything went fine - until after about a month I started getting this message saying "Must Activate Computer." After talking to Microsoft, this software was legit, but it is something called a developer's copy and it blocked my activation code because I wasn't using certain features because I wasn't supposed to have a copy like this. Of course I tried contacting the person - who is now ignoring all my e-mails. In any event...I want to go purchase a legit version from a store but am not sure what I need. I can currently use my computer, but it is operating illegally from the Windows 7 Ultimate that was installed. I do not need ultimate...home premium is fine.
1) Do I need an upgrade version or a full version?
2) What can I do with this developer's copy of Ultimate? Can I sell it anywhere to someone who is allowed to use it? I"d like to get something for it to help pay for the new one.

I would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on my laptop which currently has vista preinstalled. Am i able to wipe the HD of all traces of vista and do a clean install of windows 7 with an upgrade file? I am trying to find out if i am eligible for the student upgrade of windows 7 professional which im assuming would have to be downloaded first then installed over vista but i would rather delete vista altogether.

I am eligible for educational discounts on Microsoft software. However, the only Windows 7 listed for a discount is Windows 7 Professional Upgrade Version (for $65). I do not have ANY operating system installed on my computer... can I still install this and be okay? Or do I have to have a Windows version already installed on my computer? If this helps, I have a hard drive (that may actually be damaged, I need to check that) that already has Windows 7 Ultimate installed on it (educational version, 32 bit... I need 64 bit). I'm wary of using that hard drive and disk (I just moved the hard drive to a desktop with all-new components) because the disk had problems when I was installing... I had to take it to my University's IT for them to install it (the code wasn't working).

Just to be sure I am understanding the sticky above correctly, I wanted to ask a question. My current PC has an OEM copy of windows XP. So I can go ahead and buy an upgrade version of Windows 7 for 119 instead of 200 for the full retail version and install it on my computer right? Then, when I buy a new motherboard soon, I can upgrade my computer and use the same windows upgrade version CD's to reinstall Windows on the upgraded computer right?

I aquired a PC a while back from Amazon which came with a trial version of Win7 in German preinstalled (I installed a full version of Win7 onto it so I did not encounter this problem). The question is if someone wanted to upgrade the trial version to a full version would you be offered the choice of changing the language?

1. My sister has a Dell Dimension 5100 desktop computer with Windows XP from the factory. Can I put the Windows 7 UPGRADE version on a second hard drive in her machine? Is this OK or do I need the 'FULL' version?
2. Is this automatically going to create two options when booting the machine, giving her the options to boot either into XP or W7?

I purchased a windows vista-windows 7 upgrade for $30 from a student deal here in canada. The method of installation was a simple .exe file which ran a sort of setup which automatically upgraded to windows 7. Now I have Windows 7 professional 64 bit on my PC, and I just bought a new solid state drive. I want to move the installation to the SDD.
I don't have a windows 7 installation DVD, so I can't exactly use the steps described in the tutorial for reinstalling a windows 7 upgrade. I do have a valid upgrade version Product Key, so what I would like to know is whether or not it would work to clone my current install to my SDD. My SDD only has 120GB of space, so I would have to basically delete everything, but I don't care about that. Alternatively, is it illegal to download an image of a Windows 7 installation DVD and use my valid Product Key? Theoretically the product key would work right? (I make this assumption based on the sticky about re-installing Windows 7 upgrade versions). Or, would my key only work with a Windows 7 install dvd that it was intended for?I just don't have a clue what to do here, because I don't think I can get another copy of that EXE that I used to upgrade. It says on their website that you can only re-download 30 days from your date of purchase. Am I totally stuck? I am completely welcome to any suggestions because I really hope that I didn't just waste $400 on an SSD, because I definitely don't want to buy windows 7 again.

System - Mac w/Lion running Parallels so I can run Windows 7 software Purchased already - Windows 7 Home Premium full retail version My old Windows machine was dying and my family wanted to move this last family member PC holdout over to Mac. This is my first experience with Mac. My grown son wanted to make it as easy for me as possible, so he loaded a trial version of Windows 7 on the new Mac and got everything set up in parallels for me. The idea was that after I transferred all my files over to the new machine I could just move the activation over to the new machine and we would trash the ancient PC. I was all set last night to officially activate the trial version when I discovered that the new machine's trial version is Windows 7 Professional, not Windows 7 Home Premium. What I need to find out is if I purchase the retail Windows 7 Professional Upgrade version, could I simply enter that product key and not have to uninstall and reinstall now that I have the trail version for pro all nice and settled. I really do not want to have to uninstall, especially with the added complication of Parallels, install Home and then upgrade. I want 'KISS' and simply enter the product key for the professional upgrade and just keep on working with my set up system. Will that work?

I have Windows 7 Ultimate OEM installed on my Seagate 160GB hard drive. I want to install my Windows XP Pro operating system. (DUAL BOOT of Course) I followed your instructions to the letter. Once all the files have been copied and it reboots before the installation starts, I get an Error saying to click CTRL ALT and Delete to reboot. I can't get past that point to install Win XP Pro. The only option is to click onto any key to boot to the CD/DVD. I have my cmos set to boot from the CD/DVD. It won't start the extraction and installation sequence to get Windows XP Installed. I have to do a recovery to get back into Win 7 afterwards and set everything back to the settings before I tried to get Win XP to boot by making a dual partition in Win 7 and install on its own partition. This is ODD. I even used a brand new Win XP Pro OEM operating disk and two other Win XP operating disks, so I know it's isn't the software.
