What kind of laptop would be best?
My business is websites, so I almost automatically jump to an apple since its pushed more for the graphics/artists
But I also like the dells & alienwares.
I'd also like them to talk wirelessly/via bluetooth while they are in the same room together to "sync" up.
I'm just not sure which way to go.
I wont be gaming, just heaving internet surfing & web design/work.
I run Windows 7 64 & Ubuntu 64 (though I havent used it as much since Windows 7 64 came out)
Even though I'm running W2008 server R2 64 bit I can't install the 64 Bit version of IE9.IE9 that gets installed via Windows update appears to be the 32 bit version -- it's in the X-86 library --If I try and do a separate download I get a message SETUP cannot continue because yo have a more recent version of IE9 installedThe IE8 version it replaced had both 32 and 64 bit versions.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI run a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that amongst other things, acts as a media store/server. I recently got a Windows Phone 7 handset that can only synchronise content via Zune (ridiculous, I know), but Zune refuses to istall on Server 2008 R2, saying it can only be installed on XP and Windows 7.I have installed most of the Win 7 components missing from Server 2008 R2 so I'm not worried about compatibility, I just want to know, how can I force install an application to an OS that it is not 'allowed' to be installed on.If I can't get Zune onto the Server, I'm effectively barred from transfering music and video to my phone.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHave been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.
This guy does a great job at this .
Convert your Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation! - Multiboot Installation
Windows 7 VM's run just fine on W2008 server (they should as there is a lot of common code).
I can't install sql server 2005 (all type: enterprise+standard+express) on windows7 (7600).This is my problem when setup: Imageshack - setupsql2005

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just took delivery of a Dell (xps 9000, Windows 7 64) and it's the first system I've had that didn't come with an OS disc. So, I'm new to all this recovery/diagnostic partition stuff. I'd like to be able to do a clean install of Windows 7 so I don't have the bloatware that came pre-installed. But, from what I've read it seems like my only option is to create a system image to restore to (which would have all the pre-installed stuff anyway)? Is my only option to uninstall anything I don't want and then do the system image? I know that would leave some registry files and whatnot, but ideally I'd like a completely clean install.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI own a dell demension 4600 also i have upgraded the ram to 4 gigs, the cpu to 3.02, a nvidia geForce 6200 agp graphics card, i know i will be needing a sound card, what would you recommend. What i am looking to do is install windows 7 home premium. I seem to have all of the necessary hardware to do this install. Will I need to purchase a new copy of windows 7 home premium. I already own several other computers with windows 7 running on them. I was just wondering if it will work like when I pop an XP disc in a pc and it just lets me install windows. If its going to cost me more than 150 I would rather just let this pc live out its lifespan running what it currently is. But I don't mind overcoming a few hurdles to install 7 as long as it is not going to get too costly and the troubleshooting becomes too time consuming.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI purchased a Dell XPS 8300 almost 1 year ago.The last couple months I have had boot issues when I turn the pc on.All hardware tests (since I purchased the pc have passed with no problems). The boot issues are where all the icon's for the short cuts do not load and or the icon to show I am connected to the internet does not load properly. If I try to do alt/control/delete I cannot access anything. Then in most cases if I do a hard re-boot,the computer boots properly.Today was the killer. My wife turned on the pc and she got a blank screen. She then attempted a hard re-boot and for over 3 hr's it showed "loading game" on the middle of the screen. When I came home for lunch,my wife was on the phone with Dell. After they had her do a hard re-boot,the computer booted properly (after the usual "start windows normally" option came up. The "tech" connected on the pc and basically did all the things I could think of (i.e. hardware test to really check the hard drive etc.)When the "tech" could not fiqure out any other issue,he said that we will need to re-set to factory settings and that they are sending us a usb key to do that. In his judgement, there is a problem with the install of Windows 7 and that is the only thing that they can figure out is the problem. Outside of the "booting issues" the pc has worked great and I have had no other problems.
I am not a "techy",but I am also computer literate learning how to do basic things from watching my friends and learning how to access things on Windows to do basic repair. Long and short, does that seem like my only alternative?..I did make the recovery discs, still have the driver discs. I have re-installed Windows before (when I upgraded my Laptop and other desk top to Windows 7) and it is painful to make sure I made copies of everything I want to back-up,which I usually do and re-install all my softwear.
it only has usb device, i have windows made in my usb flash it boots up, but before it starts to install, it need some drivers for dvd/cd device (which i dont have) or usb, i have usb driver on seperate flash but it dosnt recognize it or its just a bad driver i dont know. Now it has linux installed, maybe this is the problem.

According to the dell and ms website it is not a supported product.I tried the xp drivers - the printer was added to the printers list but nothing would print. I tried to install the vista drivers, but got some kine of VB error when I ran the set-up.Is there any way to get this printer to work with win 7 (even with limited functionality) as I would hate to throw it away - the printer is perfect and they only use maybe once a fortnight.
