Details Download size: 2.1 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
Update type: Important
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Works 9 that could allow arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. This update resolves that vulnerability. I get error code 646. All other updates are installing successfully - have also run the Windows Update "fixit" which is the only available way from MS but makes no difference. I don't routinely open any files unless I am sure of their provenance so I'm not overly concerned - it's just annoying to have constant update failures on this one. Not even sure I have Works 9 ...although obviously it thinks I do ....
I have Windows 7 Ultimate and I have my Windows Update settings set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them." The reason I use this setting is because even though I usually install the updates (because mostly they improve things), sometimes I'll see an update that I know I do not want to install. So I want to have control over which updates get installed. However, I ALWAYS want to install the latest "Definition Update For Microsoft Security Essentials", and since those updates are released very frequently, it's very annoying to always have to install them manually. Is there a way that I can have ONLY those definition updates installed automatically while still leaving it so that all other updates are not automatically installed?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile using Overdrive Media Console to download audio books for my Zune, I recently encountered a box stating I need to install Windows Media Player Security Update 2.5.0.1. I have tried to download this update from several sources including Microsoft and have not been able to do so. I called Microsoft and HP(I'm using a Pavillion running Windows 7), they were of no help at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have reviewed my update history and noticed security update KB2621440 failed in MARCH, I haven't had any problems, when I look at the details it says error code:80004004, since then all other security updates have installed okay. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Overdive Media Console, attempting to run Windows Security Update on Windows Media Player. I am running Windows 7X64 and have WMP12.From what I've seen on the web, I am certainly not the first person to run into problems here. Yet any of the "fixes" I have found do not work for me. When I open Overdrive, it tells me I need the security update for WMP. It also says that my version of security is 2.9.0.1, and to click here to update. When I do this, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. I have used the Microsoft web link for the update;it tells me it is updating, then that the update has been successful. Yet when I go back to the Media Console, same message about update needed.
I have tried this in the "normal" mode, have also tried it as "administrator", both in Overdrive and also in IE. I have also gone to C: ProgramData/Microsoft/DRM and changed the name of the DRM file.( I do note that my DRM file is empty, so I can't imagine what magic this would work anyway.) I have modified Windows Firewall to allow Overdrive and all instances of WMP. I have disabled my adblocker. I have run sfc/ scannow with no problems found. I have emptied my internet cache.
I have seen this problem on other forums. None had a satisfactory answer (besides the usual reinstall).Windows now fails to boot, after Win update automatically installed the update and insisting I restart. The update was Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.97.1113.0). Startup repair finds no problems. The BIOS recognizes the system drive and reports no errors.
I had done (before the update installed itself): repaired the "windows can't find the DVD drive" problem using the Microsoft "Fixit" for that problem it was successful). Also the external storage drive on a USB 3.0 controlled was dropped by the system at some point (hence my anxiety; all my backups, including a rather stale system drive image, are on that drive). I can access the Win 7 system drive with another OS on the machine (XP SP3).

I'm getting the above mentioned error with just this one Windows update. I have done a search for a fix and have followed a couple instructions, but no luck.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with this update. Windows update has updated this one file 18 times already. Everytime I start the computer this update is ready to be installed again. Evertime this file has been installed the installation has been successful. If the instalation was succesful why does windows keep on intalling it over & over again. Does anyone know the answer to this problem I am having. Once a new update has been succesfully installed, Windows 7 should not have to install it over & over again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently, a Windows update arrived called Microsoft Security Essentials Client Update Package - KB2544035. Since then my computer started malfunctioning. Whenever, I try to install the update, everything goes fine, and then suddenly goes blank and the desktop returns (but the Windows update screen had closed). When I open Windows update, it shows that the aforesaid update is not installed. And when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it and asks to delete it. I can't even open Microsoft Security Essentials manually from Program files. Things return to normal on System Restore. But the Microsoft Security Essentials appears potentially unprotected and asks for a full system scan. But before the scan is complete the Microsoft Security Essentials screen closes and the desktop returns once again. And, once again, when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a few small .exe files that I received by e-mail. When I click on them to install the program I get a message saying Windows is preventing running the file for security reasons. I know the file is free of viruses and want to install it. I am told there is a setting somewhere to turn this security feature "off"--I am the only user of my PC and want this annoyance turned off.
I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a stand-alone PC with a hardwired Internet connection (no router).
When I try to download programs, they either stall at 1% or are extremely slow and estimate they will take days.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 7 from XP and I'm having a tough time figuring out the best way to setup/use programs without totally disabling the UAC out of frustration. I'm trying not to disable it but it's pretty annoying. Can anyone give a general strategy for setting up the operating system within the UAC environment?
I started out trying to install programs on my user account but found that to be highly annoying with all the pop-ups about permissions. So I tried installing programs using the admin account but I'm unsure of the best way to make those programs available (with the program settings intact so I don't have to set everything up twice) to my user account.
Logically, it seems this is the best method but I'm not sure if I should "share" the programs between admin and user or go into the program properties and select "run as admin" for every program I want to use on a user account...or both? If I share/run as admin all these programs isn't that somewhat defeating the purpose of not using an admin account anyway?

I installed Comodo Firewall, Avira AntiVir and ThreatFire. Then it could not connect. I plug the Ethernet cable into the XP computer and it connects no problem.I tried a system restore and it didn't fix it. I am running a thorough AviraAntiVir scan now on the Windows 7 system. I don't want to assume it is a virus, but the system was unprotected until I got the three security applications installed. I did also see some Comodo warnings and I approved going ahead because the security apps were installing at the time.
