I have 2 HDD. So before windows boots I get the black screen with white letters (and a timer) asking which hard drive do I want to boot. Ok, no prob.
But both say "Windows 7" because thats the os I have installed on both. Im wondering if theres a way to change what is said, for example I want the first to say "Main" and the second to say "Bckp", that way I know what HDD im choosing to boot.
Is there a way to do this?
I had a dual boot, xp/Win 7, The HD with the XP crashed. Reinstalled XP and now don't have dual boot option. Tried for 2 days to get it to work but to no avail. I reinstalled Win 7 on a different HD than the old install. Got the dual boot option back. Here's my question, can I edit the boot sequence to redirect to the old Win 7 install instead of the new one? So I don't have to re-install all my programs.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running an Advent desktop PC and its stats are as follows; Intel Core i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 8GB RAM Win 7 64 bit.The problem I am having is when ever i boot up the computer it shows the Advent logo-screen where I can access the boot menu etc but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor/underscore flashing in the top left... This screen stays for quite a while and I am not sure if it stops because of a key I have pressed or just because it has run its course but after it disappears the computer goes back to the logo-screen for a moment and proceeds to boot up as normal except slightly slower than usual.It is a relatively new computer and it has no problems running at all once the boot up is complete it is fast and as friendly as ever.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite Special Edition laptop that came with Vista 64bit and the other night i downloaded iTunes 10 and told me to restart my machine so I clicked ok and then my laptop shut off and when it came back on the Toshiba screen came up as usual but seemed to stay on longer than normal then it goes to a black screen with a underscore that blinks for a few moments then becomes solid. Ive tried to use the "F" keys to get different boot options because i have the windows 7 ISO disc and a ubuntu disc that I could use but whatever i try my laptop wont process it just does the same thing over and over again and bever proceeds to the actually boot up windows.

Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far: These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode boot in safe mode with networking boot in safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change. I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing memory test - nothing tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!) tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed. chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change. tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing
Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow.

View -1 Replies View RelatedIts pretty nice, except that when I get to the login page for windows, it shows a picture of a finger print instead of my user pic. i found out that the image for the fingerprint scanner is part of a file called "BioCredProv.dll" in the system32 folder. So I made a cop of it, edited the copy with a dll editor so that the bitmap image is that of my user account, but now I can't replace the file in the system 32 folder. I've tried deleting the original and replacing it with the edited one, I've added 1 to the end of the edited file's name so it is "BioCredProv1.dll" and then attempted to change the registry to use this new file (but it gives me an error saying "Cannot edit: Error writing the value's new contents." I know it can be changed as I've seen another forum where two people gave two ways to change it (one using an ubuntu linux system to change the system32 file which I don't know how to do, and the other by creating his own new registry file, which I once again don't know how to do.)

Since I don't like the presentation of my MP3's in iTunes I wrote a program in html/JavaScript that does all the work I want. I'm not a great programmer, just QuickBasic (Very Good!) and html/JavaScript. But now I meet a quite different problem. My program reads tags from the MP3 file itself. Reading 3 tags in over 5000 MP3's takes about 70 secs (Win 7 x64). To speed that up I place those tags (tit2, tpe1 and tcon) in the beginning of the file. I have to do that manually for each file with a text-editor, time consuming! But... is there a way to change the place of the tags in a MP3 file in a more automatic way?

I need to add an entry to the path so that I can access a folder structure in the command prompt. All of the default paths begin with %SystemRoot%, which I've found is the virtual C:WINDOWS directory. So:
1) Is there a way to add a path to just the virtual C: directory (not C:WINDOWS)?
2) When I add additional paths to C:WINDOWS using the %SystemRoot% syntax, they don't seem to be acknowledged in command prompt.
I just started using a new laptop with windows 7. been using vista in the past. I am trying to edit some photos and music manually. but by the time I finish editing an entire folder, some of the files have disappeared. If I check the properties of the folder containing the files, it shows that there is the correct number of files but when I open the folder, they are not there. Don't know where they are. Been trying to edit music info of some of my files. but they just keep disappearing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to modify the "folder picture" for a large number of folders, and to that end am going to write a script to modify the desktop.ini in each folder. The thing is, changing the desktop.ini doesn't seem to have any visible effect.If I manually change the picture (folder properties->Customize->Choose File) the new picture is used, and the desktop.ini is created or modified.However,if I open the desktop.ini in notepad, and make the same change there i.e. adding the line
Logo=C:Path To Filefile.png
to the [ViewState] section, there is absolutely no discernible effect. I've tried restarting explorer.exe, deleting the thumbs.db files, even restarting windows, but the changes are never picked up. Win7 seems determined to ignore any changes to desktop.ini it didn't make itself.
I was wondering if it was possible to edit the Windows 7 Basic information in Control Panel. I wish to know if there are any tweaks or hacks available to do this, or what file(s) this information is stored in.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to change the look of task manager in such a way that the bars which indicate the CPU / RAM usage under the Performance tab are a rainbow instead of all green. I had initially thought I could do this by opening up taskmgr.exe with a program such as resource editor, editing the appropriate bitmaps (103, 104, 125), and then saving them.
Of course, when I tried to save, I ran into the classic "System error code 5: Access is denied" message. Same old same old. I took ownership of everything relevant already (I think...?)
So then I thought, why don't I just make a copy of taskmgr.exe, edit that one, change the bitmaps in there, overwrite the original file with the copy! This resulted in task manager not being able to load at all. In order to restore functionality, I replaced the new taskmgr.exe with a copy of the original from my desktop.
This makes me think that there might be some sort of hash function that wasn't checking out or something, but I don't know why there would be one.
So I am trying to delete some keys from the registry using command line, eventually I am going to turn it into a batch file because it is something I may have to do frequently. Basically I want to delete a folder full of registry keys without having to list every key individually.

Yesterday, I tried to take 10GB off of my [C Drive] with that program, but it froze. So I force quit it, and I subsequently found out, to my horror, that that 10GB had disappeared! My [C Drive], which used to be 220GB, is now 210GB, and there is no [Unallocated Space] or anything to make up for the lost 10GB.

Now I go back up to the address in the To: field to fix it (delete 1 character) and I can't seem to edit it? If I right click I can bring up an Outlook contact card, where it can't be edited. Or I can bring it up in a Outlook contacts page but it can't be edited there either - and it wants me to save as an outlook contact there which I don't want to do for this one off address.
In OL 2007 you just dbl clicked on the underlined address in the To: and it popped up with a dialog box that allowed you to change the address and the display name.
I am looking for a free or inexpensive video editing program. I believe windows live has some sort of video editing program but I haven't tried it yet.
