My OS is windows 7 Home premium upgrade from XP, 64 bit, I have been running this for a couple of years without any problems. I returned from holiday on Saturday, switched on the PC and as I only had a 'medium health' message, I scanned with 'Paretologic', this did not increase the level of health condition, but it did throw up some unwanted processes which I disabled, (could I have disabled explorer.exe by mistake?) When I restarted the PC the 'starting windows' screen with the flags came up and after a few minutes the black screen appeared with the cursor in the centre, now I don't know if it means anything but occasionally the 'spinning ring' appears, only for a couple of seconds but it would seem like it is attempting to start? Safe Mode, for some reason, is not available, neither can I set an earlier Restore point. I have carried out a check with the 'repair disc' no problems reported, I have also carried out a 'scannow' from the command point and the integrity is okay. I have downloaded a copy of the Explorer.exe but don't know how to install, I don't think it is a virus or Malware but I have a scanner to install if I knew of a way to load it. Without any form of access to the OS I am lost to know where the problem is.
I just upgraded to Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite Special Edition laptop that came with Vista 64bit and the other night i downloaded iTunes 10 and told me to restart my machine so I clicked ok and then my laptop shut off and when it came back on the Toshiba screen came up as usual but seemed to stay on longer than normal then it goes to a black screen with a underscore that blinks for a few moments then becomes solid. Ive tried to use the "F" keys to get different boot options because i have the windows 7 ISO disc and a ubuntu disc that I could use but whatever i try my laptop wont process it just does the same thing over and over again and bever proceeds to the actually boot up windows.
I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7. It has been running like a well oiled machine since the day I got it.I turned it off to watch TV, then when I turned it back on, the screen shows the Toshiba screen for about 1/4th of a second and then goes black. If I hit F8, F10, or F12 nothing shows up.
While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far: These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode boot in safe mode with networking boot in safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change. I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing memory test - nothing tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!) tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed. chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change. tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing
Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow.
The Windows logo appears and everything seems fine. Then everything goes black with no sounds. It will then reboot and cycle back through the same way.
I recently moved from one house to another and after the move I hooked up my PC and upon booting I get a black screen with a cursor. It actually does boot because I can hear the startup noise but there is a black screen.
When i try to turn on my laptop i get a black screen, i dont see the windows logo or anything its just black as if it wasn't turned on, cant even get into safe mode. Using Emachines E630 win 7 home prem 64bit. Before this happened i closed the laptop (not turned it off) for a hour or two when i opened it the blue light next to the power button came on but the screen was black, i tryed opening and closing it which didn't work so i turned it off.
i'd say it does that 3 times out of 10... Lappy starts, if i see the flashing cursor on the upper left corner before Windows logo appears, i know it will work. No cursor = no logo and no boot. Solution? Power off and back on 'til it works. I usually get good results when i hit F9 and choose manually to boot from hard drive even though it's already set this way in bios boot up priority.
It never did that from Windows 7 versions 7022-7048 on my 5400rpm fujitsu drive but it does happen since i installed 7077, and now RC, all clean installs, on my new seagate momentus 7200.3...
I recently moved from one house to another and after the move I hooked up my PC and upon booting I get a black screen with a cursor. It actually does boot because I can hear the startup noise but there is a black screen. If anyone knows how to fix this.
I have installed Windows 7 on another hard drive which is partitioned to 40 gb using Acronis disk director. The installation went fine and as it went through the boot-ups, I had screen but on the final boot the screen is black apart from the os version in the bottom right hand corner. My cursor can be seen too.
Anyone have any ideas please? Is it a graphics driver issue?
i have a asus laptop. i got a virus. when i booted up it just went to a black screen with a cursor, so i reinstalled windows. after doing so it now just keep restarting, it will make it to the starting windows screen then it restarts and keeps doing that. I have tried all the following and have been unsuccessful: F2 while booting gives me two options: Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] Tools: Windows Memory Diagnostic, When I choose Windows Setup, Windows tries to boot and gets back into the black screen with a cursor. When I choose the Windows Memory Diagnostic option, I get a message saying Windows failed to start - a recent HW/SW change might be the cause. It asks me to insert a Windows installation disc and restart my computer. The following information is also provided on this screen.
I've been experiencing my pc locking up for some time now, and difficulty rebooting. The last time it happened, it locked up and there were colored spots all over the screen. I tried to reboot, and I get a black screen. The hard drive activity light comes on for a few seconds, and then goes out.
I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate x32, and when the install finished, there was a "windows starting" animation and then black. that's it only a black screen which I have no option to continue the startup..
*It's important that I Tried to Install Windows Vista and XP aswell and they both worked perfectly.
When doing a regular log on where the desktop should be located at i only see a black screen.I can log on in safe mode w/ networking and i can get to the desktop and icons located on the desktop that way.I have not installed any programs in the past 2 month on the computer. The web sites thatPenn State Industries | Pen Turning | Pen Kits | Dust Colland Shipping, Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Management from UPS this is the total.None of the NO NO web sites cause you get viruses and other bugs.If i do not know who a e-mail is from it does not get opened mark it as spam & delete it
I recently built a computer for my first time. It was running fine whilst playing Arma 2, dayZ and dawn of war 2. I then installed Star Wars The Old Republic and everything went on fine until I went to play the game. The screen went black and the no signal message came up on my tv.
I could not do anything so I just turned my computer off and then back on again. When I then went to boot again in Normal mode, it just shows the windows logo and then does the same thing.
I have tried booting it in safe mode, and this works fine. I don't think it is anything to do with my monitor as it works in safe mode and also it's my tv which works with DVDs and anything on TV.
Could it possibly be something to do with the drivers? Although I have been playing other games fine until now. Or could it possibly be something such as a corrupt file or the game installed something else which won't work?
Someone also suggested that it might be something to do with the power going into the computer? They said it could be putting too mcuh power into it and it would cut out.
A while ago my computer was acting weird. It would not let me go into this folder in the appdata thingy. So, I decided to restart. It took for ever to shut down, and booted back up and was working fine. That night, I went to turn off my computer but it was on the shutting down screen for about 2 hours, and sese its in my room, I could not sleep without it. So, it being 1 in the morning and me really wanting to go to bed I turned off the power strip.Today, I went to turn it on, and it went to the login screen. I logged on, and it went to a black screen with the curser. I waited there for a little bit but it still wouldn't work. The weird thing is that the screen saver came up. I have tried safe mode, and everything.
windows 7 on my laptop (toshiba sat.) will not boot it goes to the toshiba screen then black with cursor in top left. i cannot go to safe mode or startup repair because when you hold F8 or any other key it just beeps. im trying to keep from trying the factory reset.
Last night I got the windows 7 antivirus pro malware which i tried to remove by downloading avg antivirus. It deleted some files from the registry i believe and I had to do some other things to make .exe files work again. After that everything was running smoothly until again later at night i got one of those viruses that locks your computer and turns your webcam on saying that you are being monitored by the government and need to pay 100 dollars and all that.I immediately knew it was some malware and forced shut my laptop off. I logged back in and it happened again. So after that i rebooted the system and did a disk repair. I left my laptop on all night and in the morning it was at the exact same spot i left it at and wasn't responding. I then again forced shut off the computer which was a mistake because now i can't boot it completely at all. If i try to boot it in safe mode with networking it freezes at the directory avgidsha.sys . Then i get the black screen error where there is just a black screen and my cursor. If i boot it with last known settings i get the black screen after the windows logo. if i go to repair system it doesn't let me do anything. When i try to do the actual repair it says that make sure there is no camera or device attached. i cant restore the system and i tried a whole bunch of things in command prompt like sfc/scannow but it says that you need to reboot your system for the disk repair to be completed. Also i got the laptop from bestbuy with windows 7 already installed and dont have the disc?
When I turn my machine on I get the Windows logo, then the screen goes black and a text message advising me that a disk check is occurring, and if I want to skip it I have to hit any key in X... seconds. If I let it run, it eventually goes to all black on the screen, the disk runs and runs - I let it run for two days once - and nothing happens.
If I "hit any key" as instructed it goes to the Windows boot and all appears to be well. I guess I shouldn't complain, but I really hate the whole "disk check" screen thing, and would like to get rid of it. How can I do that?
I have been getting an alert that I have updates to windows 7, but they never seem to actually install. Tonight it didn't seem like my audio drivers were working anymore. On my other computer I realized that Custopack tools, which is a theme customization program that alters uxtheme.dll, wasn't working with the new service pack. So with this laptop I restored the default windows theme and rebooted, and got my audio back. However, I went to shut down, which would also install the update, and when I booted back up, Windows won't even start.I get past the bios, and then there's just a blinking cursor. The door on the CD-ROM works but the caps lock and num lock do not.
I have a major problem with windows 7 home premium which was an upgrade over vista. A while back I started having problems when I ran windows update. Almost every time it ran and I rebooted later all I got was a black screen with the mouse curser. When I rebooted a second time I got my desktop but none of my programs would load. I would get the spiral and then it stopped. The hard drive was chugging away. I usually got around this by going back 2 or 3 systems restores and then it worked fine. I recently used revo uninstaller to get rid of a program and to clean up the registry. It created a system restore and then I rebooted. When I rebooted I got a message of some disk problems and ran 3 corrective actions (I don't know what they do) including chkdsk and then rebooted. I got my desktop again but nothing loaded.
I did safe bootup to get to the system restore but they had all disappeared. Apparently either the disk or registry got corrupted. I can go on the internet in safe mode or load programs but can't print. I would love to be able solve the problem why programs can't load so I wouldn't be dependent on systems restore and get my laptop running normally. It is a Dell inspiron with intel core 2 duo
It worked Ok. Originally installed with Home Premium disk. Upgraded to Pro version online--no disk. It worked until I changed the secondary drive to an old one to get data from it. Only get black screen. Even put the original secondary drive back in. Still no go.
I have a 2 year old Dell Desktop with Win 7 (64-bit). Recently, over the last 2 months or so, my PC refuses to boot correctly. As I press the Power button for booting up, the the monitor goes into standby mode and remains black / blank, while seemingly the desktop boots behind-the-scene. I get no error beep or message optherwise. If i keep on pressing the ESC key immediately after pressing the power button, after a while, it proceeds with the normal BIOS check and booting process. I'm flummoxed. This happens 90% of the time, but then again, not 100%. What does the ESC key have to do with correct booting procedure and how come this happening to me at this stage. No new hardware change has occurred.
In the boot sequence, after the "starting windows" screen, Windows will freeze in a black screen as long as 15 seconds before proceeding to the "welcome" screen.

i bought a external hard drive and really wanted to have windows on it, so i installed windows 7 with some program, ok the problem is when i start the windows just dont boot, just appears a black screen with a blicking cursor, i think it is because mbr or boot are damaged because i removed ubunto and grub recently and i fixed it with partition wizard, i eard too i can repair this with windows re but it dont work on external hard drives
First off I have a Dell Inspiron n7010 system running Windows 7 Home 64bit
OK the other night I shut down my system and all seemed fine until next day. I went to reboot and got the normal Dell splash screen with both the Set Up (F2) and Boot (F12) options. After the Dell screen finished it then went to load Windows, but instead I got a Black Screen with Flashing Cursor. Can't move cursor at all.
On the Dell screen I can access the Set Up (F2) bios pages. I can also access the Boot Options (F12) Page. What I can not gain access to is the Restore (F8) menus.
I did not know to make any sort of boot disk or boot repair disk so I do not have either of these and I do not know of anyone who is using windos 7 that could make me one to use. Also Dell puts the rstore on the hard drive so onlyhave a MS Works CD and a Drivers & Utilities CD l ran the diagnostics utility but forgot to plug in my computer so when it was almost done the battery must have died so will redo the test later as tired tonight as been up half the night with this issue. But for memory the first 6 of the 8 memories areas it was scanning tested fine. Will post an update later today when Iget chance to run the whole thing again!!
I know others have had this screen. Is there a solution as have spent the last day or so googling it and seems very mixed results depending on the user and their own case with this black screen w/cursor.Some have said bad hard drive (I HOPE NOT THE CASE FOR ME AT LEAST!!!) Some have said bad mother board. Some have said virus or malware Some have referenced a software update both Microsofts and also specific computer companies. So what can I do to get to my files at least to back them up that is providing the drive is OK! I do know from the boot menu my hard drive is showing in the boot menus. Does this mean that the drives OK but maybe a corrupted boot area or something?
my computer turns ON, but makes less noise than it used to when working, and just shows a black screen...doesn't even enter bios.Recent changes: Ok, I installed a new Graphics card, radeon hd 5450, installed the drivers etc, got it working perfectly. Then a short while after I also downloaded a reputable program called watt 2.2.5 to clear my windows non genuine message. Then shortly after both, I was changing my theme, and the computer screen just went blank. Even keyboard wasn't working (I was pressing "caps" to see if caps light would come on and it didn't). So I powered off, now I just keep getting black screen!
My laptop is a Acer aspire 5738z running windows 7 home premium 64 bit and my problem is my laptop will not start. When I turn my laptop on it starts to run like normal: GPU fan starts, Disk drive kicks in, and the LED for the on button is working but nothing on the screen. I've tried too do alt + f10 for a restore, nothing happened. I've also tried to plug it into a monitor and my tv. Before this occurred it had been turned off during boot (don't ask why, I cannot answer that) and I preceded to take it apart(to fix the overheating issue due to acer not putting fan holes on the bottom of the laptop and I didn't realise something was wrong with it until I reassembled it and tried to turn it on. So I'm not sure whether is corrupt BIOS, a hardware problem, or corrupt MBR (my own personal diagnosis, don't know whether it's right or not). Also I have tried turning the laptop off taking the battery out letting the motherboard discharge then pressing the power button for a minute, leaving it for a minute, putting the charger in then turning it on.
