Nov 23, 2010I compressed my hard drive for space, but I compressed some files that shouldn't be compressed. BOOTMGR error is coming up, and everything I have read says you need a 7 install disk to repair this issue..... as it goes, I don't have one. And I can't get one. Now there has to be some way to fix this without it. I have a lap top that is also running 7 right now but it's a friends and has no disk. My desktop is the problem.

Aug 21, 2012I was cleaning up some unwanted files on my computer and I decided to compress the drive then undo it after but I forgot to undo it :| I've looked everywhere and it says that I need a CD and sadly I don't have one. I then downloaded the recovery files from neosmart but I found out my computer won't read any CD's or DVD's and the USB method didn't work for me. I am also unable to go into the advanced boot options no matter how much I try.

May 7, 2011I wiped my HDD clean with the Ultimate Boot CD and the DBAN application. I formatted a USB device to NTFS and extracted a Windows 7 ISO to it. After I wiped the HDD with DBAN, I formatted the HDD with GParted to NTFS. Now, when I try to Boot the laptop with the USB that has the extracted version of Windows 7, it is telling me that the bootmgr is misssing, when it is on there! I tried buring the ISO to a dvd, but then I got he fabulous stop error message basically telling me that I have bad media (bad DVD). I even tried using an external HDD with the extracted Windows 7 ISO on it and got the same bootmgr is missing error.

Apr 9, 2012Boot normally -- it hangs on "Starting Windows" animation forever. Boot safe mode -- it bluescreens.
Boot with a recovery CD (or try Repair Installation directly without a CD) -- it hangs on the green loading bar forever.
I dual-boot Ubuntu and can get into the Ubuntu partition fine so I don't think anything is necessarily wrong with the harddrive, but the Ubuntu partition is tiny and I rarely use it and can't access my Windows files anyway.
Is there anything I can try that'll help repair whatever happened? I just want to run a checkdisk utility or something similar that'll repair whatever got botched.

May 13, 2010when we compress the disk space entirely by going to my computer --> right click on the c: drive icon ---> properties ---> compress disk drive, the compression utility in win 7 accidently may compress the boot manager files that include the file bootsect.bak and the boot folder also . when the computer is restarted the machine hangs up and says "boot manager is compressed " and shuts down .at the prompt type notepad (since the recovery option boots from a seperate wim image it has notepad built into it ) press ctrl + o which invokes the open file dialog go to the open file field (ALT+N) and type c:oot and also see for the c:ootmgr file. right click it and deselect the option of "compress files to save disk space" when we apply the boot manager is again decompressed. also if someone finds this harder we can directly deselect the compression option by reversing the process used to compress the drive thats it . we are done

Feb 6, 2012I just have a quick comment on what not to do when running windows 7. I had just installed 7 Ultimate liked it seemed to be working fine! Then I made the dreadful mistake of compressing the hard drive. In doing so when the system tried to boot back up the system would not load received message boot manager compressed. So make a long story short I had to load my recovery disk and uncompress the hard drive. But why I have never had that issue with any other windows product until Win 7.

1. Initally had two partitions .. C and D ..
2. Tried to merge C and D to make C more by using Partiton Wizard.
3. Computer Restarted.
4.BSOD at Starting windows logo
5. Stuck at boot.
6. Launched Windows repair.
7. Unable to do repairs.
8. Dell restore unable to locate present installation. ( "current installation : (Unknown) at Unknown drive)
9. Checked partitions using DISKPART at command prompt.
10. Tried to change active partition . Restarted.

Jan 15, 2013Last night I tried to absorb a 3gb partition. Tried to shrink, delete... couldn't get it back into c:, so I just made it back into a partition, different letter. I left the disk manager open when I put the computer to sleepAlienware M11x r2.Turned it on this morning, got the bootmgr missing. I dug out the original microsoft disk, plugged in my external firwire cd drive, and tried to boot from there.The setup utility showed the cd drive after I plugged it in, but choosing it doesn't seem to stick. Then rebooting doesn't behave differently. Trying to reboot from network works, says cable not connected.
