One computer upstairs with modium and router right next to computer getting full bars and great signal. My computer, downstairs aprx 8 mtrs away, brick house getting only 3 bars. When the upstairs computer is turned on I get no bars hence no signal. If i turn upstairs computer off I than get signal. The range says indoors up to 46mtrs, 100 mtrs outdoors. Why would having the upstairs computer on effect my signal downstairs? Do I need a better router of better modium. What can I do?

Newbie to Vista also so I am looking for your expertise/input to guide me in a computer selection...I am looking to buy a laptop. Do not need many bells or whistles, however, here are the specs: .......I have been told that running Microsoft Windows Vista on wireless will take "forever" to load with only 2GB on this computer. Is this true? My needs are very limited for this laptop, just looking to perform limited work on it...e-mail, small business folders etc. I apologize for my ignorance, as I said I am a newbie in many ways and hoping to learn as I go. Stumbled upon this web-site while looking for information on Windows Vista.

I had a problem printing documents - the 'spooler subsystem app' was not functioning properly. So I found this site: You cannot add a printer, and you receive printer spooler error messages, and didn't see the fact that this troubleshooting page was for XP only. So I followed the instructions, and basically ended up deleting nearly all registry files in safe mode except the default ones. When I realized I had messed up, I performed a system restore that I had created immediately before editing the registry files. After the system restore, Vista wouldn't boot. So I restarted and booted in safe mode, got confirmation that the system had been restored, and restarted once again in Vista. Now, I have some annoying problems:
-the start menu freezes. I can click the menu, but i can't click any icons on the start menu itself. -Windows Live OneCare won't start -System restore will not boot. when I start it in the start menu (before start menu freezes), I see in task manager that rstrui.exe (the System restore file) is running as a process, but no application appears. How can i restore my computer?

I just acquired what seems to be a really old PCIe ATI card that I can't seem to install correctly. I went to the ATI support site and the drivers for the card just don't seem to work. Is there a specific order to follow when installing a GPU -- sorry, its been a while. It doesn't go into a PCI slot but its the bigger one, looks like a big ole' AGP card but it has a sticker right on the card that says PCIe. I can only find the drivers for a Radeon HD2600XT and I'm not sure if those are the correct drivers or not. When I first installed it everything went well and it installed correctly but the XP hardware wizard wasn't satisfied. So it doesn't fully install -- note, I do not have the original discs -- but just need the most up to date drivers.

I am using a windows Vista 32 bit home premium notebook computer for which the wireless network detection has stopped working. I updated the driver for the built in wireless card with out any results. I also tried a plug in wireless card which windows detected and said was working properly and this did not work either. This leaves me to believe that something is wrong with the OS. I can get on the internet via dialup modem and also by the ethernet connection with a DSL modem. I have been to several hotspots that I know have wifi and no networks show up. All critical windows updates have been installed.

Have high speed internet. Have a 3gbsdram. And I have a router that is a g. Would I benefit as far as computer speed on the net with a router that is an n router. Also even though the computer says 802.11 a/g/n wireless I still would have to buy the the adapter that goes into the notebook? I know nothing about routers and the fact we have a g router it doesn't have an adapter needed for the computer to work. Was wondering if that is the same case with a wireless n router?

We just purchased two new Vista machines (1 laptop, 1 desktop) for our church office, both running 32 bit Home Premium. I am running an account with (as far as I know) complete admin access. We have a network printer which has its own IP address assigned by the router. All three pieces of hardware run through our WRT54G router. I have tried to install the network printer on both machines. With the laptop, Vista's "Add Printer" wizard found the printer and installed it without a hitch. The laptop can print perfectly fine.
However, the desktop is having several printing issues. First I attached an HP USB printer to it. Vista seemed to install the drivers just fine, but I didn't do a test print to make sure that it worked. A few days later I tried to add the network printer as I did with the laptop, but things started going bad! If I select the option of installing a local USB printer the wizard hangs and tells me its "not responding"............

I have a Canon multifunction machine hooked up to an XP computer. I can print to it with two other XP machines and a Windows 7 machine. But when I try to install the Canon Vista x64 driver on the Vista machine, it looks for a printer attached to the computer in order to complete the driver installation and it will NOT find the networked printer. So, the driver install stops. I have tried hooking the printer up to the Vista machine and the driver install completes. But, when I go back in and try to reattach the printer to the XP machine and find the drivers, the Vista machine won't find the damned drivers. Geez, Vista sucks. (But at least 7 is great)

I've recently installed AoE3 on my computer and it works fine, I can start it and all that. Though then I ran into some trouble. I can't make home cities! When I click the "create-button" it freezes for a while and then I come to the menu which is supposed to let you handle your cards and all that. Though there is no city chosen, and when I try to choose one the only option I can click is create new home city. I simply don't get it. One would assume that it's something wrong with the game, and yeah. Of course there is, but I tried reinstalling it and that didn't resolve the issue..! Then I installed AoE: Asian Dynasties thinking that a later update might have a fix, but nope. Problem remains. This is really starting to get to me... I'm at a LAN and I'm the only Vista user you see, though I've had it installed on this computer before so...

Ive got vista ultimate 64. With a standard computer. My problem is that I cant configure my mouse buttons. After I install the latest 64bit mouse driver, and click on the mouse icon to configure the mouse buttons, an error pops up that says - 'Some mouse settings might not work until you connect a Microsoft mouse to a USB port on your computer or set up a Microsoft mouse that uses Bluetooth technology'.
The problem is that I have a microsoft mouse that is connected to a USB port. The mouse works fine on my spare XP computer so its not the mouse that's faulty. I tried separate microsoft mice - wheel mouse optical and the intellimouse optical, both by microsoft and both have same issue.
I tried different usb ports and same happens. I tried the ps2 port and same happens.
I uninstallled all mouse drivers and reinstalled but no help. Basic left and right click works but cant configure the wheel button. It was working a week ago, but I went for a holiday and when I came back it was faulty. All vista updates are installed, security is the windows firewall, AVG free antivirus, and windows defender, but none of these have been a problem before

I recently spilled something on my Microsoft intellitype pro natural ergonomic 4000 keyboard and, after letting it dry and all that stuff, it started to mess up the keyboard keys. Now, "f" types both "f" and "space" and vice versa, "o" brings up the "My favorites key assignment screen, "5" or "." brings up both a "5" and "." together and finally, maybe the worst, "comma" brings me to the last page I visited. (luckily, as I was typing this, I also found that the page is always exactly as I left it, so all the words I struggled to type so far are still there when I go forward in my browser history.) Now I play a lot of FPS games on this computer and this is very very irritating to me. Is there any way to fix this without buying a new keyboard all together? And here's what typing looks like for me without any editing: F or fgoodnessf sakes,f If thinkf myf keyboardf isf broken5.5.5. andf rememberf everyf "O"f goesf tof thef f avoritef f keyf listf andf everyf commaf goesf tof thef lastf pagef If wasf on5.

I am having a problem with Google Search. it has been this way ever since I got this new computer back in April. It does not do this on any "Search" but Google. I have Google as my home page. When ever I type something into the "Search" bar and click on search, it goes as it is suppose to, to the search results. If i go back to Google search and remove the former Search item and replace it with a NEW search term and hit search, it goes nowhere. it will not move. i have to X out of the Browser and then open up a new browser and then type in the term and it will go. This is strange as it does it on Google only. the Google toolbar will do the same thing. It really is annoying to have to x out of the browser and open another one for a different search term. I have never had a problem like this before.

I'm not a computer guru but I know enough to get myself in trouble. I bought a new Dell laptop about 6 months ago and they talked me into going with Vista Home Premium. I really like what Vista is supposed to do but I'm getting way too frustrated with all the little things that go wrong all the time.
1. Internet Explorer locks up then fades and says it's "Not Responding". Then I go to Task Manager and kill the program then start up IE again and all is well, for a little bit anyway.
2. A couple of programs will all of a sudden freeze the entire laptop and the only way I can fix it is to hold down the power button until it powers down............

I'm having a massive problem hooking up my laptop to my 52" Sharp Aquos 1080P LCD. I can see the laptop screen on my TV but the image is all bluish and way distorted. I have gone through the gfx card control panel the displays control panel and I can't get the picture to look right. I'm using HDMI - HDMI, even tried two different HDMI cables to see if that was the issue. What am I doing wrong? I hooked my laptop up to my 32" 720P LCD tv and it looked just fine (however the color was a bit off)

I am interested in a Gateway C-142XL convertible tablet PC. I like the specs on this computer. I also like the idea of being able to use tablet mode, without going to a a 12" screen. It comes with Vista 32 bit. I am going to be running > models, so I want to take advantage of the 64 bit system. My understanding is I can get Vista 64 bit compile for a nominal fee. However, I am concerned that I will not be able to get all of the devices to work properly. Are drivers for new computer hardware generally available?Anyone tried this machine with 64 bit? I am having a hard time finding out what drivers are needed for this machine to check for 64 bit compiles. Processor and memory should be fine. I found a driver for the video card. Any advice on what else to check out? Any advice on going to 64 bit on new machines (or tablets set up with 32 bit operating system in general)?

Here is a new one for you all. Up until 2 days ago I was running a Epson CX9400Fax all-in-one with Vista Home Premium on a Dimension E520. I had a paper jam and after clearing it the system seemed to be out of sync with the takeup roll. The paper, on a simple print job, would would roll halfway through and then show a paper jam. I assumed the jam had thrown the timing out. Since it's cheaper to buy a new printer than attempt to have it repaired. I had a new Epson NX415 delivered this morning, set it up and lo and behold it's doing the same thing as the printer I replaced. This shouldn't be a problem with the two different printers. On the other hand, is there anything in the O/S that could be causing this? I'm picking up a replacement printer tomorrow and if the issue still persists, it can only be something in the O/S. Have any problems cropped up after the last updates? I'll keep you posted after I try out another printer.

I know that this has been covered in quite a few other threads, but I've yet to find a solution to my issue and am hoping someone may be able to assist me. I recently had to replace my desktop, which was using XP, with a new system that is running Vista. I know my way around a system fairly well, but I'm having trouble finding out how to make my on-screen volume meter return to me. I know it's a small issue, but it's driving me nuts! From what I've found on the net it seems fairly common in some models, but I've yet to see it addressed in mine. I'm using a Gatway, model DX4710-09. I SWEAR it was working when I first got it, but it disappeared. It bothered me so much that I actually did a clean install of Vista, to no avail. All of my drivers are current and I've uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard as well. I'm having a hard enough time getting used to Vista and it's quirks, and this is really a thorn in my side.

I have the problem is I get this graphic corruption, partically when trying to play any full screen game. It also happens when I try a high resolution, like the native resolution on my Viewsonic 2235wm LCD, of 1680x1050. Its just a display corruption as the sound will work in a game, and you can even control the game as well, with the corrupt display happening. Here is a picture. Does anyone have a clue? I have all the latest drivers installed, Nvidia, Creative, the lot.

The colors of the windows in Vista have changed to bizarre shades of pink and neon green. (The choices of colors available under "Appearance Settings" are limited to various shades of mostly pink, green, and other unusual colors). This is beyond changing the windows colors or themes, as the Vista or Windows Classic themes also are corrupted. Any videos I play also are distorted by weird colors.
To my knowledge I made no changes to my computers settings, installed no new software, etc. Virus and spyware scans come back negative. I also reinstalled my video drivers, but it had no effect. Unfortunately, System Restore isn't working- I only get error messages when I try it.try to restore my graphics to normal My system info: Windows Home Premium, Intel duo core 6600 @2.4GH, 2GB RAM, Radeon X1950 Pro 256 MB

Vista Home Premium, SP2. Starting a week or two, I've encountered some problems that I've been unable to resolve.
1. Background: Computer goes to sleep after two hours of non-use, and this has worked correctly for well over a year.
2. Computer is set to wake up at 0200 for daily backup, as a Task; this, too, has worked well.
3. Recently, I started finding that, around 0400/0500, when I would get up, and I would press a mouse key to reawaken the computer, both the computer and the monitor would wake up, but the machine would be locked up. I found that I could hold down the power key for about eight seconds, turn it back on, and when I would get the normal black & white screen about choices, if I chose "start normally," all was well.
3a. A thread here about a clock updating site not working led me to change from that site to NIST, and the problem went away for a few days.
4. Then, I started finding that pressing the mouse key would wake up the computer and the monitor, but I would then get the cursor and the "busy circle" on the screen, with the computer locked up. if I repeated the power-key/start-normally process, all was well. I filed a support ticket with Logitech, and got a reply. I updated the ticket two days ago, have not heard from them as to further suggestions.
5. I have also found that if, instead of using a mouse key, I would press on the Enter key, computer and monitor would start and all was okay....

I've seen a few messages on this, but none with cures or explanations. Am on dual core machine with 32 bit Vista, so explorer only hogs up to 51% of CPU instead of all, though this still is enough to stop me from being able to get work done. On this latest instance, I turned the Win Explorer window off & waited for ~ an hour, which did nothing to alleviate the problem (task manager still showed explorer.exe going strong). Then tried 'regsrvr32 somedll' that someone in this discussion group recommended for a similar problem under XP, which earned me "error code 0x800a0046", so I guess that wasn't the thing to do. So, what is going on? What is win explorer trying to do? It feels like the throttle won't shut down, or some such thing. Is there a cure besides turning the Win Explorer window off and on?

I have a Vista system with 2 gb of memory. I purchased a 8gb Verbatim flash drive with Ready boost software. I have not noticed any significant change of speed using this device. I have it set to the recommended 3710gb. Under the customize tab for the device, the default selection was set to Documents. I have selected "All". Is there any type of test I can run with this device uninstalled to get a
speed measurement of my system and with the device installed with Ready Boost to see the improvement?
