Slow Performance During Startup

Mar 23, 2008

I was expecting that Vista's slow performance during startup, logon and resume from suspend would be improved after SP1. After all I noticed that there is no difference at all even after SP1. Even with the latest processor, 2 GB ram, on the highest end HP laptop, vista takes 3 times longer than XP with an older computer, slower processor and less ram. Are there any expectations for the future for performance?

Very Slow Performance With 32

Mar 23, 2008

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ11S, with Vista Home 32. The laptop has a Core 2 Duo T7100 @1.8GHz and 2Gb RAM. I run Office 2007, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Corel, etc... Sometimes the machine becomes so slow I almost fall asleep (literally!) while waiting for it do perform a simple task such as opening IE or showing a menu or opening an email message. I should add that my PST has 5.6 Gb. I'd like to reduce its size, although I don't think it is the cause of the slow running, but I need to keep many emails... I have talked with Sony and they simply refuse to let their customers downgrade to Xp. So, besides tweaking (which I don't know how to), what can I do to my laptop to avoid these episodes of EXTREMELY slow running?

Slow Performance Within Vista

Nov 8, 2007

I've finally decided to jump on the Vista boat ( or off the XP boat as it may be ), so I've installed Vista64 on my secondary hard drive and have been trying to get it in shape to use all week.

Unfortunately it hasn't been going smoothly. I've had no crashes or lockups to speak of, but my performance within Vista is just abysmal. The windows chug as they scroll around, and launching Internet Explorer is an exercise in frusteration. In particular, any page with a Flash ad running at the top absolutely cripples me.

I'd have to guess that something is amiss with my graphical setup. I'm using an EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS as my display adapter, which is currently rated 2.9 in Windows Aero, and 5.9 for Gaming Graphics. Everything else is right around 5.0. The Gaming score seems on par with what I've heard elsewhere, but 2.9 seems pretty low for Aero. Does this sound funny to anyone else?

I've installed every update available, with the exception of Extras and Language packs. I've gotten the latest Forceware driver for Vista64 ( 169.04 ), as well as all the Windows Update hotfixes that Nvidia reccomends.

Does anyone have any further suggestions that I should try? Or does anyone have similar hardware with much better performance?

Slow Hard Drive Performance

Sep 6, 2008

Ive been having some serious performance issues with hard drive xfer speed and performance, but I am not sure if I can narrow it down specifically to the HDD. The primary time where I get bad performance is when downloading files. It all started when I first installed vista and was downloading all of the updates and SP1. After a brutal night of waiting around for the files to download and install (I'm talking hours), performance did a huge jump, but was still sub par from before I reinstalled. Currently when downloading files from EA store, bittorrent, or any large file, say Vista SP1, my computer slows down to a halt. I defrag weekly, used an external defrag program for >64MB files. I used the tutorial to increase SATA drive performance, tried a few other tweaks on the tutorial forums, but nothing seems to work. It seems to be much worse when I try to unzip/unrar or otherwise process large amounts on my HDD. Ive done virus scans, spyware scans, used system optimizers, but I think im missing something.

Slow Network Performance With Media Centre

Mar 30, 2008

I have an 10/100 wired connection through a linksys router to an XBOX 360 and am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. I've had ZERO succuss in playing MCE content - ie MP3s and viewing JPGs - on the XBox.

The Media Center menus on the Xbox are intolerably slow, taking 5-30 seconds to respond. Eventually if I have the patience to wait until the XBOX Media center accesses the files located on the Vista machine it takes upwards of 2 minutes just to load one jpg. When I run the tune network tool in WMC I get a message saying that:

"Your network may not have enough bandwidth for consistent performance on your extender device."

When I view the performance graph in the tool my bandwith barely registers on the graph.

Other things I have tried to no avail:
- turned off all firewalls
- unitstalled anti-virus software
- port forwarded the following ports in the router, TCP2869, TCP10243,
UDP1900, UDP10280 to UDP10284
- played with the flow control settings
- tried selecting all possible "speed & duplex" settings

Support from Microsoft sucks:mad:. The XBox people have pawned me off on the Vista support people. I wouldn't let the Vista support people hand me back to the XBox people...although they tried pretty hard. The Vista support people are saying they need to recreate the problem in their lab and get back to me.

Slow Performance When Working Online With Offline Files

Mar 29, 2008

I am currently testing Vista in our XP Pro/2003 environment. The XP clients perform perfectly in the same setup. We are using Netgear Managed Switches. To give you an idea of what I mean by slow/fine. When working offline, Word 2007 (or example) will open in less than 2 secs. When working online it is likely to take at least 10 secs. The HDD is busy continuously, slowing performance to a crawl. Something else I have observed is that this High Disk Activity does not start until all of the files that the user has chosen to be offline have been downloaded into the cache as observed by Network
Utilization in task manager. I have a feeling the problem may lay in Vista's background sync? All users are using roaming profiles (Stored on a seperate server) and Folder redirection for all profile folders.

Windows Upgrade: Slow To Download & Performance Degrades

Mar 11, 2009

We just recently bought our first Laptop/Notebook...I still do not know the difference yet. I downloaded Windows Vista Upgrade Adviser and it said under Device Details Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family Intel Corporation. This device will not work in Windows Vista. For more information, please go to the device manufacturer's website, Windows Marketplace, or contact your retailer. I contacted the Manufacturer, and he said to update the BIOS, and if that doesn't work do a full system recovery. The Notebook is less then a week out of the box and we are not gamers. I did the BIOS upgrade, the usual cleaning and unchecked many items on start up and I still have to defrag every night. It is very slow to download and the performance degrades as the day goes on. I am wondering if the Message on Windows Vista Upgrade Adviser is a concern. I noticed when it told me to update other things and I did, it never showed that I did, after I uninstalled/reinstalled the program.

Startup Slow

I recently built a new pc and got myself a copy of Vista Home Premuim installed on it. After installing Vista everything for the most part seemed fine without any problems or conflicts. After that got all Windows Updates and also latest drivers for my hardware. Now for the problem, even with the specs of my system (listed below) my system take 3-4 minutes to boot. Compared to when I dual boot it to XP and it is sitting at the desktop for me in under 1 minute. I understand that Vista is a more demanding OS than XP but considering.

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

Performance Drop

Jan 20, 2010

I've suddenly got a steep proformance drop that makes playing all my games pretty much impossible.

It usually states when I'm playing MW2. I turn on the game and have no performance issues. I enter a game and no performance issues. The game starts and no performance issues. It's only until around 5-10 minutes in that I experience the performance drop. When that happens, I can't do anything except to hope that the performance goes back up again. Reducing the resolution does not help. Changing my graphics card from quality based to proformance based does not help. Increasing my performance vs power saving does not help. I'm not running any other programs that are using up all the space (How would I? you can't even tab out of MW2 while you're playing it). Restarting the computer also does not help.

Worse still, this performance drop also affects everything else randomly as well.
I really don't know what I can do.

This has happened before, but not for this long.

Performance Indicators And % ?

On my small Benq joybook it hovers at 55%cpu and 50%ram.

On my Dragon it hovers at 2%cpu and 55% ram at idle.

Any help and info would be great. Ide like to try and reduce the cpu on the Benq obviously as well as the ram on both machines.

Both machine are quite fresh, not really loaded with software. Running N360 on both machines.

Sluggish Performance In 64

Mar 4, 2009

I have been battling a problem with my new build for almost 3 months. My rig:

Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
Core2Quad Q6600
G.Skill DDR2-800 2x2GB
Geforce 6800 GT
PC&P Silencer 500W
WD Black 1 TB
Vista Home Premium 64-bit

My performance is terrible! This is my first experience with vista. My pc runs sluggishly, sims 2 game crashes at startup, my other 2 games (half life 2, left 4 dead) are very choppy and unplayable. Browsing playlist in iTunes with cover art displayed is choppy and slow (unusable, i have to turn the cover art off).

If I take out 1 of my sticks of RAM it seems fine. If i load XP, it seems fine, even with both sticks.

I have ran memtest on my ram, tried my ram in all the slots, ran prime 95 for hours with no errors, ran diagnostics on my hdds, rma'd my motherboard (they returned it saying nothing was wrong with it), purchased a new motherboard (asus p5q), tried 2 other kinds of RAM, updated all of my drivers, reinstalled vista a billion times, and NOTHING has worked.

The only thing left to replace is my cpu and before I go through that hassle, I just want to exhaust the last avenue, since the problem is only evident in vista with all my memory sticks installed.

The main task at hand is to run a spreadsheet over and over again with different data. Each pass is taking 6 min.

I have never seen the system CPU 100% busy. Is there a way to extend the time slices so the threads run longer and do not have to start and stop as much? (cut down the context switching?)

SP1 Gaming Performance

Mar 23, 2008

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues and/or problems since SP1 was released today.I know it may be too early to tell what with the manufacturers rushing to create drivers that will actually take advantage of the over 550 hotfixes incorperated into SP1, but so far for me at least I have seen at least a 20% increase in overall gaming performance and system response. One main thing I've seen that has not improved is any source games. It seems the source engine is either not a fan of vista, or the 8800 series cards. But as for games such as World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament III, all seem to have an increase in FPS and load times. If anyone has a positive or negative comments for SP1, please let me know; very curious to see what Microsoft has accomplished/screwed up.
