Is theres a way to completely wipe a user account off without having to log on and use the remove user account or without typing in a password? one of my friends put a password on my laptop while they were drunk and forgot it so i need to know cause i dont have a restore passwords disk and its longer than 14 digits.

Went back to the Vista computer and was able to read the disk on this machine. Do I need a special program or download to be able to transfer my Quicken data from Vista computer to my XP computer?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a HP laptop that is a C2D 1.86Ghz which is almost 2 years old, has 3gigs ram and the hard drive on it still had around 50gigs free. I normally set the virtual memory manually but because the machine is slowing down badly decided to put it all back to auto for a test. It appears to have helped a little so it remains on Windows automatically deciding what is best for now though the option to use it more for progs rather than background processes is chosen. I tried the other way and it seemed to slow down some programs so back to programs it is. Anyway, over time on its Vista SP1 (64 bit ultimate, BTW) it has slowed dramatically. I have:
1) Defragged, cleaned out garbage of all sorts using ccleaner and also removed old restore points and so on using Disk Cleanup.
2) Gone through registry using JV16 Power Tools 2009 and cleaned out any mistakes that were possible to remove.
3) Checked out what is starting up and uninstalled any program that I no longer used and adjusted ones I still use to only load what they need when I actually click on them to start.
4) Did an image backup of "C" drive and then deleted all partitions and formatted the drive as one partition and blank then used another machine to attach the drive to and check for any faults including bad sectors then put the image back.
5) Downloaded HWMonitor to check heat and it SOMETIMES gets up to 56C when I really am pushing it but for the most part hovers around 40C. So overheating isn't it.
I cannot get to the thermal exchanger so cannot be entirely sure but with the best inspection I could do, I could see there was nothing blocking the vents or exchange unit. I also stand the laptop on a cake stand (which is the metal wire stand thing you put cakes on to cool down) so that air flow under and around it is maximised. All those things did nix to help. So I decided to use SFC /SCANNOW and it
went through the entire process and reported that two files appeared to be a problem but couldn't be fixed because they were locked. OK, so I tried to use SFC /SCANBOOT as I used to on XP but that option doesn't exist for SFC under Vista so I cant reboot and have a windows OS file scan be performed when no file is locked. Not daunted I thought about "repair install" which *CAN* be done on my desktop Vista Business if needed with the DVD there but the laptop came with Vista Ultimate 64 bit already installed and with a restore partition on it, no disk, as usual and I cannot actually DO a repair install because of that.....
I have a laptop that was running Vista 64bit Enterprise fine. It's disk is also protected by bitlocker. It is now in a state where none of the recovery console options seems able to recognize the drive. From a command line bootrec.exe I can see the disk and it's original partitions of proper sizes. However they are 'hidden' and there are no visible volumes. Is there any good way to restore the information that would make the disk recoverable?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got a brand new Vista x64 desktop PC today, and I've been spending all day getting everything installed and properly set up. I just can't decide what to do with the system restore feature though. In the Windows scheduler I've blocked it from running after system startup, settling for a supposed once a day restore point creation.
Unfortunately that's not really how things work in the real world - I feel like I can't do a damn thing without Vista deciding it had better spend yet another ten minutes creating a new restore point. Obviously a lot of that is due to all the day one application installs I've been doing, but even on my previous Vista PC (a laptop), I would usually see several restore point creations every day through what constitutes normal PC use for me...........
I am trying to use a system restore disk for my friend's computer that I downloaded. The computer have Vista, now I have a 32 bit and 64 bit disc. How can I find out which version of Vista I have? I cannot boot into window or safe mode ( I could figure it out from there). I also tried to check the Bios and saw nothing. The laptop only has 2 gigs of RAM I think, so I would assume 32 Bit, but I want to be sure. Also, if I used the wrong one, would it mess up the computer? or could I just redo it with the other CD?

Every day I have a new question and sometimes more than one a day. lol the problem I'm having now is that IE (7) is not saving all of my passwords. I mistakenly put the wrong password in a forum I've belonged to for quite some time and of course I was prompted to ask if I wanted to save it and I answered yes, not realizing it was wrong. Well, now, every day I type in my "correct" password and I'm told it's wrong because IE is remembering the incorrect password and not prompting me after I put in the correct one.

Every time I open the program it tells me I need to enter my password. I do so and I check the box to remember the password. It does the same thing when I go to send an email. It does the same thing if I go in through "Tools - E-mail accounts" and set the mailboxes up all over again. It will not remember my passwords.

I went to check mail today on Windows Mail and all of my passwords would not store any longer. I get a windows security pop up for each account to put in the logon info, I do, click store info, ok. I put them back in, checked mail ok, but when I closed Windows Mail and restarted it, same problems. When I put the passwords in the Accounts section and hit APPLY, they disappear again once I reopen it. I have deleted the accounts and put them back in, same problems. I check 6 accounts at once too, so it is a major pain in the butt to input every one each time like this. It is not my antivirus program either, I have used the same one for a year with no problems until today. This morning it all worked fine, now it the passwords will not save.

This is one of the most annoying issues with Windows Vista for me since I work off a local NAS I have at home all the time. Rather than just save my password as it should the first time when I checked the save password box, it seems to throw my password away after a reboot. View 6 Replies View RelatedWhy can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has been locked out of his Dell laptop and cannot find the password for the single account that it has. The laptop has Vista Ultimate installed on it and I am unable to activate the hidden administrator's account to get into Vista. Other investigations using other software shows only 2 accounts, Administrator and Guest but not the actual user single account that shows up onto the login screen. ( I have managed to blank out the Administrator and Guest passwords ) I have a standard Vista Recovery Disk , but I am unable to either repair or re-install Vista from the Dell hidden partition , and the only alternative is to install a unused retail version of Vista Home Premium that my friend has been given awhile ago. I have 2 questions
1) Is the Vista Ultimate user account passwords located in a different place as compared to other versions of Vista?
2) if I install this retail version of Home Premium on the Dell laptop, will I have problems with the propriety hardware that is on the Dell laptop and would I need to find all the Dell drivers for the laptop?
After installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.

As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. I could care less about the virus in the restore files, my main goal is to get my cd/dvd drive working again so I can install my business software.
