Overall, I have to say the move to Vista was not at all what I had expected. So far I am very happy with this version of Windows (nice to move away from XP after 6 years). Is there any hope for Vista to ever overcome it's generally poor reputation?
View 8 RepliesI've heard conflicting reports as to whether Office 2000 will run successfully under Vista. In the hope that they are compatible, I installed Office 2000 and then installed (from the Microsoft site) updates SR-1a and SP-2. Then I downloaded SP3, but when I attempted to install it, I got the message "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." Is there some reason for this, or should I just try again? I looked for, but could not find, a newsgroup that deals with Office 2000 -- is there an alternative newsgroup that would be better for these questions?
View 9 Replies View RelatedDid something happen with the WMP 11? I was looking at some MP3s on Amazon today. Downloaded 1 and it would not play on the WMP. I keep getting a message about dll has a version ( bunch of numbers) were more( numbers) was expected. WMP is not installed correctly and must be re installed. do you want to install player from MS site.
I tried several times and it just bounces me from one place to another on their site. I tried to delete WMP from PC thinking I could re load it, and in the control panel for doing so it's as if it does not even exist. Is it hidden somewhere? I finally tried loading a Real player and it works fine. Just wonder what the hell has happened to the WMP. Vista Home Premium with all the up dates if it matters.
I got halo on my laptop and said my graphic card is below than expected when my laptop i got it this year it a R61 lenovo with Vista Buisness on it, why it say my graphic card is below expected?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded (a so-called "clean install" on same partition... it made xp pro x64 unusable by renaming various system folders) to windows vista home basic hoping that PAE would work. I had assumed that 4GB RAM would be no problem (the intel e6600 core2duo in this system supports 64bit instructions, and as a result PAE works on linux just fine) though it is not doing what I expected.
After installing Vista SP1 (came out recently) from windows update, I decided to try using BCDEDIT.EXE and set PAE to "force enable" mode... Not working as expected!!! Well, pressing [windows logo key on keyboard] and [break] at the same
time (you can also bring that up by right clicking what XP called "my computer" and selecting "properties") ... windows now reports: Memory (RAM) 4.0 GB ... it was too good to be true: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283296

I am having problems trying to figure how to get vista on a 400g SATA drive. I have tried with both 32 and 64. When I boot from the disk and do a custom install.. the drive just is not there. So I gave up on that and plugged in a smaller IDE drive and of course Vista installs no problem and guess what.. I can now use my Large Sata. Problem is that Vista runs extremly slow on the IDE. how I can move Vista to the SATA drive or at least do a fresh install to it, then I could transfer my settings.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a DV4t laptop from HP. Due to the hard drive heating up problems with this particular laptop, I went out and bought a 60GB SSD which runs a lot cooler. Is there a way to move the Vista x64 Home Premium to the new SSD drive? I thought about reinstalling the OS from scratch, but the HP system does not come with a Windows disk, just a recover disk that will fill up most of the SSD space with bloatware.

My only problem is that both setups will be using a raid 0 array for the installation and I don't know if I will be able to boot off the old disks with the new hardware. My old PC was a nForce 4 based AMD rig and my new one is a P35 based Intel rig. Is there a way that I can install the drivers for the new raid array prior to booting with it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedBack in the 60s the saying about Ma Bell was "We don't care - we don't have to." The feedback on these threads makes me think that it's time to resurrect that saying. Microsoft is not the 2nd party - Norton and McAfee are the 2nd parties - we buy their software. Microsoft is the 3rd party that installs their oh-so software on our computers and then expects us to uninstall or disable the functions of the 2d party software in order for their 3rd party software to work. Truly Ma Bell thinking on Microsoft's part.
So I give up - I'll not be using Windows Mail. The question now is whether I continue to have two computers running - my old laptop that has Outlook Express that has NEVER been a problem. Or can I move Outlook Express over to the new Vista computer? (The problem I'm dealing with is not a new one, rather it's one that has been kicking around here on the various discussion sites since last spring - that is that the antivirus programs seem to render WM useless, i.e., no mail in or out and no access to the messages in the folders with some lame excuse about the lack of memory etc. Yet here we are into Feb 2008 and Windows Mail and it's advisors are still saying dump the 2nd party software.)
My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedProblem is network bandwidth as measured by the speed test(s) will decrease over time without any changes being made -- it does not matter what time of day either. It is a Vista PC running SP2 and hard wired to a Linksys router (Wireless-G model) and I am a Comcast customer with 30mbps service. Maybe I should mention this PC sits idle for most of the day before the family comes home from school. All of the XP systems in the house do NOT have this problem.
As you can see over the course of 5 days the download speed drops into the 2-3 mbps range (and the upload speeds are greater than the download speeds !! ) The 12mbps measurement was taken after the reboot. The only fix I have found is rebooting the machine --- then performance is as expected for a day or so before it starts to drop again.
The coordinate of the cursor in my Vista is not at the tip of the arrow, instead it is at the tail of the arrow. When I click a file name, the file underneath would be opened; if move the cursor to the edge of IE, the double head arrow will apear at the bottom-left of the edge.

The folder would move to the new place and leave nothing behind. I now have a new Vista computer. I do the same thing and it copies the falls, but it leaves some or all of the old copies behind. I have unlocked the taskbar, and I can resize the quick launch toolbar. The taskbar cannot move or resize. However, the taskbar CAN move and resize in the Safe Mode. I have made a folder named Docs to hold all my documents. But when I right click on the documents folder, which now is pointing at C:USERS, there is no location tab.

There's something going on in the background someplace that hoses file and directory transfers *-on the same computer-*. I turned off the ridiculous indexing for searches, no luck there. I even tried an external command (mv in Cygwin) and it still took too long. I suspect that the files I think are available for plain old copy and move operations are really some demented abstraction - the "files" and "Folders" are merely representations of some bizarre MS database scheme. Rather than just talk to the disk sector in the usual way, a disk request has to first navigate some convoluted maze of really useless internal dependencies. Bet it's related to Microsoft's version of security.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got a Vista Premium computer, 64 bit with an AMD Phenom 9100 processor. I'm still not familiar with many of the basic functions in Vista, but I'm pretty good at figuring things out. However, I just installed 2 of my old hard drives from my old computer (which lost its motherboard), and so now I have 3 hard drives. When I was looking at my files in one of the old hard drives, let's call it J:, I found that items had been moved around. They were in a specific order and now things have been moved since opening the HD with Vista. I already tried dragging and dropping the items to put them back in order. Only 1/4 of them are out of order, but when I try to drag and drop, it appears I can drag, but not drop. The file does not move to the new place where I drop it in the same folder. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does Vista not allow the flexibility of moving contents inside a folder? I really need these items to be put in the correct order. They are not in alphabetical. How do I do this very simple fuction? I will probably have figured it out by the time someone answers this, but then again I haven't yet, so I'm hoping for someone who can tell me how to do this very easy thing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI can't move files(or folders) from one folder to another. I can delete, rename, create, and edit files, but I cannot move them. i.e. I select a file, ctrl x or c or right click and copy or cut, then change directory and paste it, and windows beeps at me and no pasting is done. Drag and drop doesn't work either, as it is the same concept. Now, if I move a file via command prompt as administrator, the file can be moved between directories, but frankly, I don't want to be typing out file names all of the time. My User Account is listed as Administrator when I check via control panel.
I can copy/paste text, so the clipboard is working. The read only box is checked on the folders but as I understand it, that's normal? I am listed as the owner of the files and I have "full control" over them. This problem is persistent throughout my entire computer, including all drives, and even USB flash drives. I have tried booting with the windows cd and repairing the installation.
The problem began because of me trying to tweak my computer using a tutorial. I'm guessing the cause was either disabling UAC or executing the "Net user administrator activate:yes" command in command prompt (probably the latter). I undid all changes I made to try to fix theproblem
I seem to have a problem. Vista HP 64 bit keeps freezing on me after just a few minutes, the mouse won't move and there is no keyboard response so I have to reboot. Everything is fine for a few minutes and then it happens again. I've been trying all sorts for the last two hours but have got nowhere. Luckily I dual boot Ubuntu so I'm writing this from it. When I tried to post in Vista I never got to finish my post before it froze. Yesterday I got a new monitor (Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP) and it set up fine. I used it for about ten hours yesterday without a problem- both gaming and general use. So I don't think it's that.
Today I installed and purchased 3Dmark06 and ran that. I also ran Ntune. Therefore I suspect these programs are the problem. I have used System Restore. I took it back a couple of days but the problem remained even though 3Dmark06 seems to have disappeared from Programs. I have then taken the restore point back a week but still no luck. I tried to uninstall Ntune in Safe Mode but I can't, I get a message saying that Windows Installer must have not installed properly(?)......
1. I have the fastest cable connection possible and I just can't move around the Internet fast. I can download in a flash but moving from site to site is sloooooow.
