May 16, 2008I have Ultimate SP1.There used to be a function where I could right click on a folder and select "search" this is no longer there, is there some way to get it back?

May 31, 2009New Vista Home Premium 64bit user here. On my WinXP Pro PC, when I do the Microsoft Updates, I see Express and Custom update options. I like the option to install critical Express updates and be able to choose Custom updates for software or hardware. On my Vista Laptop, I don't see the Express and Custom options any more. Does Microsoft Updates for Vista Home Premium 64bit just install all the updates regardless now? Is there a link to an explanation of the new Vista 64bit update philosophy?

Jun 22, 2009except for a few grand issues like Search failing with special/technical searches rather than simple filename search, 85% of this OS is now great. I love it now. And can you guess how many processes show up in TaskManager? 26. ONLY TWENTY SIX. My IE8 starts up lightning fast and swings by all sites except videos, for certain sites w/FlashPlayer & Videos I enable CompatibilityView which aligns those older sites to IE8.
Applications startup as if they were already loaded into Memory, faster than in WinXP. Who knew? It feels like quad-core at 4GHz, seriously. Everything is momentary as if it were loaded from RAM This OS is still a failure, however, versus WinXP. Are you shocked to hear "failure" after my praises, do I contradict myself? No. Because most people are far from my tenacity and just by education, hobbies and profession I alway stune up things to perfection. My cheap car leaves far more expensive models wondering what rocket had just passed them on LIE Expressway. I enjoy tinkering with technology.
It took me 2 weeks (?) to tune up Vista beast to be a polished fast, bug-free beast. It's more convoluted than was tuning WindowsXP. I spent several days in Registry, GroupPolicies, SecPolicies, filesystem digging out and blatantly renaming & moving system files no one is supposed to touch.........

Jun 18, 2009I've got an apparently "broken" search installation. So that I can skip through the normal "click the folder you want to index" type of answers, it's way beyond that. Let me give some background first. This is a new installation of Vista x64 Ultimate on this machine. I just installed it a little over a week ago after I got a blue screen of death that wouldn't allow any type of system restore, etc on the prior install. My prior installation on that machine was a Vista Ultimate x32 bit. The prior installation had the OS on the C: drive and I had moved "My Documents" out of a Windows XP onto the D: drive (D:My DOcuments).
In that prior installation, I left all Music, Videos, documents etc. under the original layout and just pointed the Vista "music", "documents", etc folders to the sub folders. I had no problem indexing on my prior version. I have a Vista 64 bit Ultimate at work as well and IT has no problem indexing even under the default locations..........

Jan 22, 2010Yes, it locks up. Not sure why I have Vista Home, 32bit. I'm not extremely computer literate, but if you tell me where to find the info I can do that - no problem. I try not to have too many windows open, maybe 3 internet and maybe my email, Word, Excell, and a DB manager.
I can be operating just fine and the computer will lock up and it is not consistent with any particular function, but it is consistent in that it happens all day long every day. My resolution is the Task Manager, but even that can take a minute. I'll be glad to provide more info, I just need to know the questions.

Apr 5, 2008We all should give up using computers for a short while and start doing simple things in life, like read some books or some thing.Look what Vista has done to some people and in particular to Frank(The King of all Vista fanboys), he was unable to read my name, his spelling is worse than spell checker( I don't know whether he has one). And look at some of the solutions given by some MVPs,it goes like this:
1.It is not Vista's fault, get help from your hardware manufacturer.
2.This is only a Vista forum go to manufacturer's help desk.
3.You paid for your PC why not spend another X amount and buy new Router.
4.Vista won't function with old hardware.
5.You do not need to know what Vista does, it takes care of your needs and you simply press the buttons and Vista will do everything for you.
I can go on but I do not wish to bore you to death. I very rarely get any constructive help from these MVPs, only one chap from another forum gives proper answers and some brilliant Tutorials. But you all can give it a go with a fantastic system called Ubuntu.

Jun 9, 2008I have been having a great deal of problems getting my Vist desktop to connect to the Internet. It was working fine until I had to remove my wireless router. Anyway, I spent a over 2 hours on the pnone with both my ISP and HP helpdesks but they could not resolve the issue. My XP laptop connects fine to the Internet so I know the signal from the modem is fine...it is an issue with Vista.
Anyway, the problem is that is Vista will not run the ipconfig /renew command in the CMD function. I was able to use ipconfig /release OK but not the renew. I am in the CMD funtion as an administrator so that is not the issue. I even did a system recovery to a few days ago and reinstalled the network adapter but that hasn't helped. I have searched online for an answer to this problem with little success. Is there some way to force Vista to renew ther ip address?

MS Paint Text Function Grayed Out
Apr 22, 2008MS Vista Home Premium I am trying to use MS paint and the 'A' tool on the tool bar is grayed out and not clickable. Do I have to pay to use this tool? Also if I go to view the 'Text Toolbar' option is checked but again it is grayed out. I am no expert on windows but I thought paint was included with the OS. PS Don't bother telling me that some other program is better, I just need to plan my flower garden and MS paint is fine for that.
