Microsoft Support for Windows Vista (with no service packs installed) ends on April 13, 2010, while support for Windows XP (without Service Pack 3 installed) ends on July 13, 2010. Windows 2000 support will end on July 13, 2010 as well. * There is no Service Pack 3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP with SP2, you have the latest service pack and will continue to be eligible for support and receive updates until April 8, 2014. What Does It Mean When Support for My Operating System Ends?
If you are still running a version of Windows where support has ended, it means that version of Windows will no longer receive any updates from the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site. These updates are generally provided for security reasons to help protect the PC from harmful viruses, spyware, malware, and other malicious software. Windows Update also provides new drivers for your hardware that can improve the reliability of Windows. Hackers love to take a security vulnerability in Windows and exploit it to their advantage. So, if a vulnerability is found in Windows XP or Windows Vista and you are not running the latest service pack, you will not be protected and will be at risk.
How Can I Tell What Service Pack is Installed? Follow these steps to discover what Service Pack is installed:
1) Click on the Start Button
2) Right-click on either My Computer or Computer (depending on your Windows version)
3) Click on Properties

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS. I possibly want to upgrade to Windows 7 equivalent. Here's my dilemma: I installed Service Pack 1 via Windows website download manager, and after a fashion, it appeared to have installed and it rebooted my system. It clearly shows as having been installed according to Windows Update History. [Additionally, Service Pack 2 is not offered as a download, but the rest of my query, please.] HOWEVER, according to Microsoft, when I click START > right click COMPUTER, at the top of that resulting page and beneath my version of Vista it should show "Service Pack 1."
In my case, it does not! FURTHER, I downloaded and ran Windows 7 Update Advisor, the results show I need to download and install Service Pack 1. I'm aware that I can download. or order on CD, each of the Service Packs and install, starting with Service Pack 1 before attempting to install Service Pack 2. Why does Service Pack 1 show as installed in Windows Update History, but does NOT seem to be installed according to the two other instances/sources I've mentioned above?

I recently installed vista, do the service packs download through live update? Or do I have to go online to download it? Or does it come with the vista installation? I don't know what service pack, if any, is installed on this computer.

I have been working on a users computer for a about a week now and have read about 100 posts on google. I am having trouble uninstalling Service Pack 2 from her Vista X64 machine. I want uninstall the service pack because it has created havoc for her computer. It constantly keeps rebooting at random times and shows a blue screen beginning to dump physical memory. Then when Windows boots back up it says it has recovered from a serious error. On average the computer reboots at least 4 or 5 times a day. I have tried to remove it from the control panel and it says "uninstall was not completed successfully." Her system restore date does not go back far enough, so I can not restore her PC before the SP2 was installed. Have tried all the steps from the following post: How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step. The command line option just sits there for about 5 minutes and then returns to the C: prompt, it never asks me to reboot the system. Another technician installed the SP and he did not save the restore files. I have tried to download the SP 2 and place the file in C: emp and uninstall through the command line but this also does not work. I am stuck and need help uninstalling service pack 2. The user also just purchased an HP printer office jet 6500 and have read online that HP printers have not had much success with Vista x64 systems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If possible, I do not want to reload the PC and I only have remote access to the computer.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Build 16489. Microsoft has begun testing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and intends to ship this release in the second quarter of 2009. Note that there are no new features in SP2; this is a more typical service pack that aggregates previously-released fixes. Here are some screenshots from the first external build of SP2, build 16489. This is evidently the new Windows update, but when I try to download it, I get a message saying that possibly one or more drivers are incompatable with this new update. Can I still safely do the update or what is going on with this?

I have two computers running Vista Home Premium. When Service Pack 1 came out, my desktop, which is a clone I built myself, downloaded and installed Service Pack 1 without any problem, but my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop seems oblivious to Service Pack 1's existence. Although automatic update is on both computers with similar settings (full automatic update), and the laptop has downloaded a number of updates since then and keeps telling me the computer is up to date, I can't help wondering why Service Pack 1 hasn't downloaded and installed, and whether I should install it manually or just assume the computer has a good reason to not install it and leave it alone.

Just had this in my RSS Feed, thought it would be interesting. Announcing the Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 RC - Windows Vista Team Blog - The Windows Blog Quote: This week we are announcing that Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 has hit an important milestone in development: Release Candidate (RC).
Starting today, the RC of SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers to test prior to final release. Specifically, we expect SP2 to continue the security benefits of both products and simplify deployment for our customers. For an outline of changes in SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, check out the notable changes document. I have recently installed SP1 to my Vista X64 machine (dual core 6700 o/c to 3ghz, 8 gb ram, raptor 10K 74gb system harddrive, raptor 10K 150gb large file and partitioned PS scratch disk, 340 gb 'everthing else' harddrive, nvidia 8800 640mb gts videocard, wacom A3 wide table) and I have noticed really strange behaviour in PS CS3. It generally feels slower and when I work on larger files (183x120cm @300dpi) it's much slower than pre-sp1 on the same file size.
The odd thing I have noticed is that it crashes (fades to white - not responding ) when I use the transform scale tool and when I add a Layer blending effect ( drop shadow / gradient etc ) it never did this before as it used to render it instantly.....now it takes a least 30 sec to 1 min to create and/or recover from the 'not responding' white out screen. Has anyone else found this with PS CS3 and Vista SP1? - It's very annoying especially as I had the system perfect before the SP1 upgrade. How can I fix this?

It will go through the complete installation process with the 3 stages upon restart and shows success on all three of those stages but comes back saying that the upgrade did not take and my system is reverting and changes that were made during the install. The problem I ran into was that after installing Service Pack 2, some kind of error or glitch started occurring. What happens is that I restarted the computer after the install, and when Vista boots to the desktop, only about 5 icons in the tray would show when usually there are 10-12 that display. So I then tried opening Internet Explorer and you see the hourglass symbol show next to the cursor showing that it is working, but then it disappears and nothing displays. No window shows for IE. I tried launching other programs and the same problem occurs. No windows would display, but in the Task Manager, I see the processes running.
So I figure the issue is related to Service Pack upgrade, so I restored to the point before the Service Pack 2 upgrade. Everything worked fine. So I tested the computer after a restart again and again the non-window launching error occurs.
I stumbled acorss some proccessing issues with CA Security software that would hog some memory, but I am unsure that it is the reason for this error. Could it be that the Service Pack may have installed improperly, thus, creating some kind of window error? Or do you think it could be related to some preinstalled program having incompatibility with the Service Pack?
I have contacted Microsoft support and they suggested resetting IE, but I don't think that is the solution. I haven't tried it yet. I sent them a HiJackThis log and they reported no problems with it. No viruses or issues to report from a Malwarebytes scan either.

Has anyone installed SP1 for Vista on a PC with MacAfee security suite? I turned off all of my non-microsoft services and attempted a 3rd install and it still did not install. Microsoft told me to completley un-install MacAfee and then try to intall SP1 again. My question is, if anyone has done this; will it work? I hate to waste another 3 hours doing an install and revert.

If I'm not having any problems with Vista do I need to install the new service pack? My computer came with it preinstalled and I have no CD or backup. I've tried several times to install it but keep getting error 8007371C. I went to the manufacture and they said I need to do what sounds to me like to a destructive recovery then install SP1. I see where a lot of people are having problems with the new service pack. I guess what I'm asking is will I be buying myself a headache if I install it?
