Fax : No Dial Tone, Then Dials
May 28, 2009
I have a vista ultimate quad core 32 bit machine. It works great. I had to fax a doc yesterday and I couldn't do it. I loaded the program, went to the page, typed in phone number and other info. I hear the fax program dial ... on my speakers, not the modem speaker - the stereo speakers. I do not hear the dial tone - it just dials the number and then it rings 18 or 20 times and gives up. Two minutes later, it redials. I took DSL filter and telephone wire and connected to my backup celeron 1.7 machine and BVP (I think it is) software, I can print-fax a document. So, I know the wire and the dsl filter is ok. I got the fax off my desk but it sure is inconvenient. The kicker is that I did fax from the program 6-12 months ago. It was prior to upgrading vista to service pack 1.

I have garbled start-up music (the tones played when Vista logo shows on startup) about 3/4 of the time I start-up. A friend says it can mean corrupt start-up but I ran the start-up repair and it shows nothing. Is it possible to repair the file, or is this something that needs further troubleshooting?

My notebook has a dial-up problem. Whenever I try to dial-up using any modem, it stops at "Modems Connecting". I thought it was a driver problem until I tried another modem that had always worked. I did a bit of goggling and found others have had the problem, but I did not find a solution.

The OS isWindows Vista 64bit Home Premium. Windows Mail tries to connect via Dial-up when the computer is on DSL, and of course fails. Cannot get it to connect to DSL like Windows Internet Explorer does, automatically. Tried HP support and they finally said I would probably have to uninstall Windows Mail and reinstall it. Any other ideas out there? Is it difficult to uninstall and reinstall Windows Mail? Or perhaps it would be better to just use another e-Mail program like Thunderbird?

I am using Windows Mail on a dial-up internet connection. When I open Windows Mail there is no-longer a prompt to connect to the internet.Instead I just get an error from each account saying the server could not be reached.Internet options all appear to be set correctly.

I am working on moving over to Windows Vista, in hopes of going officially to Windows 7. I know I should be checking for Windows 7 but I have a full Vista Ultimate 64Bit. I have most of my devices configured but I do not seem to get my GVC modem to install. It is based off a Conexant processor and XP was able to use a "generic" Conexant driver.

First, my system is a Vista Home Premium, 64 bit with 8 GB RAM, Intel E8400 @ 3 GHz. Second, I have Hughesnet broadband; HN7000S modem/router, and a netgear switch, and a Linksys WRT54G as an AP for a couple of notebook computers that are sometimes connected. I also have a dialup account with WT.NET for "backup" (HN is rather
unreliable).
I've have four or five computers on line since I had these two accounts, but the present Vista computer is the only one that keeps trying to access the dailup account, even though the comnputer is on-line with Hughesnet. (all the other computers are running XP.... I'm really beginning to hate Vista.)

Just purchased a new HP desktop with Vista and Norton Internet Security. DSL connection with line connection to Ethernet slot. The Internet connection is slower than dial up. The old crappy desktop I'm replacing was faster! Been through Norton and HP support desks, both of which have not fixed the issue. What suggestions do you have? If I can't fix this, I'm returning it and purchasing a MAC!

I fear to update Vista anymore, because there's always a new trouble with each update. First, the network icon for dial-up went off and dial-up showed not connected after SP2 installation, then bluetooth discovery went dead, after some time whole network center was behaving strangely and finally, week or two before, most strange thing started to happen after a bigger update rollup - a directory or directory link named A or B was created hidden on the system drive, which basically lead to the drive itself, but after trying to remove the directory, explorer hung and eventually went dead- hard reset needed. After a restart or in the safe mode, directory is empty and can be deleted.
After some time again, it's back, causing another hang-up. Spybot found nothing, updated ESET Smart Security is always on and found nothing, internet was disconnected, if it's a virus or malware, it's pretty unknown. Enough for my nerves- I did a complete Vista reinstall, this time I also installed Ubuntu just to have at least one reliable system ready. Well, everything went ok, after installing SP2 from offline package network icon worked ok, bluetooth and wifi as well. My happiness didn't last long indeed- after installing remaining post-SP2 updates, annoying A and B directories appeared again.... and yes, I know it would be much easier to stick with Ubuntu, but I've already spent lot of money for Vista software to just trash it, so I want to get it working well somehow.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium & connected via broadband with tiscali. Windows Mail randomly pops up the dial-up conection box but I can't get rid of this. I just click on the 'x' at top right and it goes, only to reappear at some random time. It's not a problem as such, just irritating.

How to make a "Connect automatically" check mark stay in a "Dial-up Connection" window? The "Connect to:" field is "ADSL".The check mark disappears after a hibernation or restart. I have to check the "Connect automatically" and click "Connect" every time after a hibernation or restart to resume the internet connection.
