View 5 RepliesMy speaker icon in the taskbar has a red cross on it. When I hover my mouse over it, it says "The audio service is not running", if I right click it I get 3 options
1. Playback devices
2. Recording devices
3. Sounds
I went to my start menu and searched services.msc and checked to see if plug and play, windows audio endpoint builder, and multimedia class scheduler were all set to startup type automatic & all started. they were. so then i go to Windows Audio, right click to properties, and it is stopped. So i click to start it and it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."
I tried to restore my computer but my restore point is past the point when this issue originated. Also, Conexant Driver is installed and working properly. If I right click on the volume icon with a little red X through it... I can click on Open Volume Mixer, and It says "No Audio Device Installed" Yet, my audio devices are installed.
Been trying all sorts to get a Toshiba laptop to see a wireless network. Network is definitely present. Lastly have checked WLAN AutoConfig settings: Setup is set correctly to automatic Service status is stopped. Clicking Start I get the following error Windows could not start the WLAN AutoConfig service on Local Computer. Error 0x0000003: One or more arguments are invalid.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThere are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI receive a message that states "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set Assoc control panel". This started after getting my new computer and changing from using Microsoft Outlook Express with Windows XP to Windows Mail with Vista.
I checked the file associations. If I set a file extension of .doc to Microsoft Word (2007) instead of Microsoft Works Word Processor, the a file with .doc will not open but will open under Works Word Processor. This only occurs will email attachments. I don't have any problems if the attachment is saved from another computer to a jump drive and then try to open it on my computer.
My husband got a computer about the same time that I did and he doesn't have this problem but he also doesn't use Windows Mail either (He reads his emails from the internet - Yahoo). I used Outlook Express before and didn't want to lose any of my old documents.
I have windows vista and it is not compaitble with most of the games I like to play. I went to compatabilty wizard and went through the process but I am still unable to open the game. I get a response that says "ths application can be launched with a relase version of Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003" I have Windows 98 that I would like to install so I can play this game. When trying to install Windows 98 it states that it is not compatible with Vista. Can I uninstall Vista to install Windows 98?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've searched other questions on this, and here's a summary of my problem: I cannot seem to open attachments - and I'm sure I used to be able to. I have AVG Security. I have gone into Windows Mail and unticked the box in the Security section. I've tried sending to my other email accounts (yahoo) and still not been able to open attachments. I have Vista 32bit, Service Pack 1. I'm also getting an ongoing series of error codes on C:Windowssystem32avgrsstx.dll which all show 'bad image'. This file was modified on 16th June - but I'm not sure if its connected
View 4 Replies View RelatedLike many others based on previous posts, am unable to open or save attachments in windows mail. I think my problem is exactly the same as "anhlyss" had in the posts in January. I am hoping there is an easier fix than restoring factory setting. As suggested in other threads, I have ensured that I have unchecked the "do not allow attachments to be opened" box in options.
If I click on the attachment to open it, the little hourglass pointer comes up, and then goes back to the arrow, but nothing else happens. If I try to save the attachment, I get this message: "There was an error saving one or more of your attachments, please check your free disk space and try again"
I cannot open the stream from the windows media player 11, i mean the live video from the internet like CNN Video, wwe,com videos. France 24 english version, and so on.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a local Intranet (a local website, not file share system) and I am using IIS 7 because this is a very advanced asp.net website. I have got it working on my machine, but I cannot get it to work on any other machine connected to my network. They can all access my file share and normal network, but cannot use the IIS localhost.
I have read about changing the Hosts file, but when I try to ping localhost, I do not get a valid IP to enter in the Hosts file. I am obviously doing something wrong. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?
EDIT: Have solved this problem! For those who wish to know how:
Find out more about Localhost. There is a very good article here: localhost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This will explain about the default Localhost IP. For IPv4 it is 127.0.0.1 and for IPv6 it is ::1. Pinging the LocalHost usually gives you the IPv6 ::1 IP address. You may type 127.0.0.1 into your browser, however aliased websites in other locations will NOT work. Set your computer with the IIS website on it to static IP. Type in to your browser (on any computer on your network) your now static IP, and you CAN put a forwardslash and your aliased website in other locations. I think you can now add this to the Hosts file to make a nice alias on any computer. I will probably write a tutorial on this when I get around to it.
I am trying to access the public folder from another computer on my local network. After failing I started diagnosis at the local machine. I have UAC turned off and have shared the public folder (c:userspublic) with full control, change and read for everyone in share and Full control for everyone in the security tab. I can access the folder in windows explorer. If I select start network, machine name, public, I get a message that \machinenamepublic is not accessible. Network and sharing center show the following:
Network Discovery on
File Sharing on
Public floder sharing on (password required)
Printer sharing off
Password Protected Sharing on
Media sharing off
If I click on the link to show me all the files and folders that I am sharing nothing is displayed.
This is all local, not via the network.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince migrating to Windows Mail a year ago on a new PC running Vista, I've been unable to open, or to save and open, email attachments received in .pdf or .jpg format. When I try to open .pdf attachments, I get an error message reading, "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." If I save a .pdf attachment in Adobe Reader and then try to open it, I get a message saying, "Adobe Reader could not open [file] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I run Adobe Reader 8. Where do I look to find a solution to this problem? Is it related to the similar problem with JPEG's?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been doing this for years in XP and Server 2003, but recently I have been installing Vista x64 Edition for some specific needs. This code is part of a workstation startup script that pulls the description from AD and makes it the local description on the computer. This does not work in Vista x64 or Server 2008 x64 and I have found no explanation on the Internet as of yet. I have not tested in x86 installs of the same OS. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a home (workgroup, not domain) network with a bunch of Vista SP1 PCs and one XP SP3 PC. Before I upgraded Vista SP1 PCs to SP2, all PCs could see and share files among each other. After I upgraded two of the Vista PCs to Vista SP2, the XP PC cannot see their shared folders. The Vista SP2 PCs show up in the list, but when I try to see the shared folders I get an error message "\XP2PC is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. I've rebooted everything including the router. All the Vista PCs, whether SP1 or SP2, can see each other's shares. The problem is only with the XP PC -- it appears that SP2 broke something.

Speakers: "The audio service is not running"

I think I may have a problem: I have installed the Vista beta service pack (6001). But I don't know how to uninstall it. I have gone to add/remove programs/view installed updates and it doesn't appear there. I definitely have it, because under My Computer it says: Windows Vista ™ Ultimate Service Pack 1, v668 On my desktop, on the bottom right hand corner, it says: Windows Vista ™ evaluation copy. Build 6001. In Windows Updates, it has an entry on 15/12/2007: Update for Windows Vista (KB937287) - Build 6001.17052 (x86). Status: successful. When I double click on it, the information panel says (among other things) it cannot be uninstalled. It has another entry, also 15/12/2007: Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 - Bulid 6001.17052 (x86). Status: failed. I believe that I have to uninstall the beta service pack before I can load the full version when it is released. Also,
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen opening up a file in windows that does not already have a registered file association you are prompted if you would like to specify what file to use to open the file or if you would like to use a web service. The web service is a great idea for the average computer user but for advanced users, you likely already know what you want to open the file with.Â
With the help of a registry change you can disable the web service lookup and bypass that screen entirely. Instead you will be taken directly to the list of applications on your computer you can open the file with.
To get started click on the Start Button and type in regedit to start up registry editor. Then navigate to the key below....
I have three computers networked together via a Linksys Wireless Router. One Dell running XP Pro, and two HP laptops (wireless) one running Vista Ultimate x64 and the other running Vista Home Premium x32. I have all issues resolved (that I've discovered so far anyway) except one. There is a shared external hard drive conneced via USB to the XP, which I have mapped to both Vistas. I can see it when I open 'My Computer' but when I click on it I get an error that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to view the item." The odd thing about it is that I can access the contents of the drive by right-clicking on it and choosing either 'explore' or 'open.' I can access drives mapped from the Vista(s) to the XP on the XP just fine, just not the other way around.
