i have updated my windows defender several times (the same update)
the update is:
KB915597 (Def. 1.23.4310.0)
as i said the update installs and everything seems fine until about a week later when the same update is found and installed
and so the vicious circle begins again
anyone had this problem?

ugh! I tried the suggestions here of manual dll registration, and i lost all the prior windows updates. They had all been up to date through November 1st. . .
I downloaded Defender manual installer, it does something, and says the system is runing normally. . but i can't update.
The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
I shouldn't be surprised but here goes....I checked today for SP1 on windows update.. According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Once again Go figure!! Running Vista Business 32bit here in the good old USA and of course the English versionVista is and has always been updated right on schedule....

View 6 Replies View RelatedBeen using Vista (Ultimate, 64bit, SP1) for about three months now (only because I wanted to get acclimated to Windows' new look and feel for the eventual switch to Win7), and one of the first things I noticed was that a) it kept forgetting my folder views and b) it kept sticking my new files at the top of folders instead of the bottom. I just figured it was a "feature" and I looked around the net for a way to work around it, but never found one. I just tried to live with it until the other day a friend directed me to the tutorial Brink posted to make Vista remember (I don't even know how I missed it; I'm usually pretty proud of my Google Fu), and it made me incredibly happy. So I thought "Hey, there might be a fix of some sort for my other problem." The problem is, I can't remember the search query I used to get info for problem (b) the first time around and I couldn't get any decent results with the ones I was trying. So I decided for the direct approach and ask here.
So here's exactly what my problem is. Whenever I drop a file into a folder, or save a new file, Vista is always sticking it at the top of the folder. And not even as the first file, usually as the second. Now, if I happen to have that folder open when I save the file, sometimes it will put it at the bottom, sometimes not. I never had this problem with XP, and its pretty annoying since that's how I process and sort my files. Is there something I can do about this?
I am running Windows Vista Premium Home SP1. When I boot my computer, Windows Defender doesn't start automatically. It works fine if I start it manually. I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.

When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIm having a problem with my mouse, it started a couple of days ago, it keeps sticking for about 5 seconds at a time and a "bink" sound starts as if its trying to find it, i cant do anything with the mouse at all. Occationally in the bottom right corner a symbol comes up with. "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfuctioned and Windows does not recognise it. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...
I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........
when going to the windows update window,i get a white blank page and it says "the page failed to load"i did restart, same issue.

Vista Ultimate SP1+. On a couple occasions after turning Windows Sidebar off and later back on I've noticed its sys tray icon has changed to the same icon Windows Defender uses. After a warm boot Sidebar seems to sort itself out. Any rhyme or reason for this?

I can't switch into safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with Command Prompt and Last Known good configuration. I don't know how to solve this problem because I can't get into any of the modes and even I inserted the installation disc I can't still see any repair computer or what. It will just turn to blank screen with space at the upper left after if i will insert the installation disc.

I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
I understand that Vista SP2 RC update has to be uninstalled before installing SP2 RTM update(when bcomes available). Does 5the Windows Update automatically uninstall SP2 RC update or does it has to be done manually?

Is there a way to uninstall Defender? I have other products that don't crash now and don't need Defender.
I seem to have Windows defender running on my Vista Ultimate SP 2 laptop. This is despite the fact that I cannot see it in the list of installed programs, and my download archive does not have a version that runs in Vista. I used to have Windows Live OneCare installed, but I've uninstalled that and ran the cleanup tool, yet I still see Defender in my taskbar (although it complains that its definitions are out of date).

So when I sign on to get my computer up and running, it says that I have not run my Windows Defender for over 3 days and it should be done. I have it in "Automatically to run daily at 5:00AM." I am wondering if it is not running because the computer is not turned on at this time? When I then hit scan, it does do a full scan without any problems.
