Hi like many i have a recover drive D:
is there a way to get rid of the "drive" and restore it to the C: drive. since all it is, is a partition of the C: drive. Unless there are any programs that use D: are there?
vista ultimate, no SP1 yet, cause it won't take on my system and Panda Titanium AV i get a message that says Panda has detected a worm on the computer and I need to restart it to complete the removal. i restart, and when I do, it goes to the desktop, but none of my programs work. every time i try to open one, it gives me a message saying wininet.dll is missing.
i can't open any programs at all. i can't open explorer at all. i tried a system restore, but it said it failed and did not reset anything. i don't know if it will help to boot it from the DVD, in fact, when i think about it, the DVD drive has not been working. if i try to put a CD or DVD in, the drive disappears from my system.. so i'm not sure that will be an option either short of going out and buying a new drive.
I wondered if there is more - or + value to doing a restore prior to my sp1 download, I would like to make a recovery disc using brinks great tutorial. I only have my retail purchase computer created one time recovery discs.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter some major problems with my system, I had to perform a complete reinstall of Vista. The folks from Dell talked me through it. But now, in my My Computer window, where it used to show my 2 hard drives plus the Recovery Drive, it no longer shows the Recovery Drive. I was relatively sure that space was partitioned off of my C drive, but it's not showing up. there's a possibility that a technician hid it while remotely accessing my system. Is there a way for me to check?
if there is no Recovery Drive, how much should I worry (it sure didn't help me LAST time the computer needed restoring)? I am planning to get an offsite backup a la Carbonite or an external drive for backups soon. For all I know, that makes the Recovery Drive a moot point anyway, but I'm not sure.
I've been reading threads about getting the 'low on space' on D drive to find out how to clean up my drive after using it for back-up, unfortunately. I see a list of files that should be there are Dell, Program Files, Sources, Tools, Users and Windows. However, there are folders within folders within folders in these files in my D drive, so I'm wondering if I can safely delete any of them.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI keep getting a message that my recovery drive E is almost full and I need to delete some of my programs. My C drive is fine and has plenty of room. I have talked to Dell and the tech man was not following my problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 x64 bit. He said I would just have to put up with this message and not to delete any of the recovery drive. I don't think he is right. When I follow the directions..it says to delete all of my recycle (which I did) and free up disc space.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI inserted the media direct cd for vista like the web site said to do I could see the recovery directory, the c drive and the media drive. it asked me to put in how much space i wanted for the c: so i put in 137 like it said. so now the recovery drive is gone. I put the reinstall dvd in and it says it is copying windows then extending files and then installing files then it goes to the completing installation and then it takes over 2 hours.
when it restarts it has an arrow on the screen and it stops there. on the web site it says it is to come up with a user name and password page but we never see that part. Any idea's what i need to do? If I put a windows xp cd in it got to the install screen and when I click enter so it will find a previous version and ask to format the computer halts so it doesn’t damage the drive.
I have the problem with Vista where Updates are downloaded but then will not install etc. I do NOT have a Vista CD as Vista was preinstalled on a Dell 540 Desktop. I do have the OEM number as shown in system files. I want to be able to reinstall Vista and hope that will fix the problem - but I don't want to have to reinstall any programs or lose any files already on the computer. Can anyone advise how to re-install Vista from the Recovery Drive or elesehwre on my computer?

View 4 Replies View RelatedOne of my neighbors installed Norton 360, she says it told her it needed to update some plugins, once it was done, it said it needed to restart windows to finish installing the plugins... she was never able to boot to desktop after that.without asking for help, she went ahead and did a complete System Restore and she is now without pictures, documents and other very important data. I installing "On Track Easy Recovery Pro 6.12" on the fresh drive and use the featured they have to recover data from Freshly installed and Reformatted drives but I was unable to get anything out of it... all I got was what it was already there from the fresh install. She is using Windows XP pro w/Media Center and this is a Vista forum but I got nowhere else to go and I don't trust anybody else. I was thinking that if I install the software on my PC and use her drive as a slave or with a USB/SATA adapter I could get more data but I am thinking that it will yield the same results. I have recovered data before but it has been on a dying but Unformatted drive... is there anything else I can try? any other software that you have first hand experience with cases similar to this? would anyone know if Norton 360 has some sort of reverse feature that I could use in order to get this back or am I just that naive I need to help them as they have always helped us out and this could be a good way to repay them back... they are like family. Whatever you can suggest, it will be greatly appreciated I also have a software call "Recover my files" that I have also had some good results with but again... never with a reformatted/fresh install OS drive.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy Vista desktop took forever to shut down last night and today it will not start at all. The hard drive spins briefly and then gives up. I have a recovery disk the CD drive lights but it will not start from there. I would like to get it up briefly to be sure I have no new photos to back up. I have Wubi Ubuntu installed and if I could get the thing started at all, I would be able to use it to make sure I can recover anything that I desperately need. I tried to start it with PC Linux OS which is capable of running from the CD drive, but no joy there either. I would love to give you more specifics but I can't since I can't view the info, I can't. It is an E-machine, one of their T series with 180 gig hard drive. It's got lots of RAM. I was running Vista but it was an upgrade from XP.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a Gateway LX 6810-01 and he completley reformatted his hard drive. He ordered some factory discs to restore to factory settings but when it loads it up it just hangs.
I made a vista 64 recovery disc and it loads up.. When it does it asks for the Dvd/cd Rom driver.
The device is a HL - DT - ST DVDRAM GH15F SCSI Cdrom Device
It lets me serach for it and flash drive is an option and I have one handy, however I can't just find the driver I need and put it on this flash drive for the computer I'm working on.
my c drive it says i have 1% left ! i have used disk cleanup and defag but it didn't help ,plus i remove programe ,cookies and temp internet, can i do a recovery using my backup files? i only had this computer for one year
View 5 Replies View Relatedi m trying to find a recovery disc for the acer aspire m1610 system. i totally screwed up my hard drive and have lost the entire recovery partition. if any1 has a m1610 i would appreciate if you could get an ISO image from the eRecovery application. i tried installing eRecovery back onto the system but everytime i do, an error pops up and says "Not D2D System, eRecovery cannot be installed."

Moreover, I don't have a recovery disc for vista, just Win-7. Perhaps anyone can pinpoint me in the right direction? I have the CBS file... However it's close to 24MBs...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought Ultimate w/SP-1 OEM 64 bit. I currently have Home Premium 64 bit. Can I just install Ultimate on top of Home Premium---or should I uninstall it? If I uninstall Home ver during installation of Ultimate, why would I need to keep the recovery copy of Home ver on "D" that came with the computer?
Shouldn't I get rid it and free up that partition for other use... then just make a complete computer recovery copy and store it on the USB external drive? I like what I have read a litte about the Maxtor One Touch backup--- but have never used it. I presume it will do a complete computer back up?
I am having tons of issues with my pc (vista home premium). I think the registry might be corrupted. No one seems to know how to remedy the problems. I was thinking about using the recovery dvd's for my laptop. i use this pc for work and have thousands of email, onenote, vpn....etc. i understand this will erase my hard drive and one of the problems i am having is "windows back up" doesnt work (ironic)... is there some sort of way i can back up my computer then reinstall vista(use recovery dvd) and transfer that backup to my laptop. If i create an image with back up software will that just reinstall all the corrupted files (registry..etc)...is there anyway to reinstall vista without erasing the hard drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had my hard drive from my laptop die a few days ago. I was able to recover almost all of the files except for a few Windows file to an external hard drive enclosure. The old laptop was a Vista Home Premium unit and the new laptop is Ultimate. If it's of any consequence or usefulness, the recovery software I used was from R-Studio. How my files and programs to the new laptop I'm using? I contact Gateway for support and they were useless. Windows was not the issue, it was a faulty hard drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI changed the permissions on my D driver (partition) to DENY EVERYONE. I did not realize that Administrator account was part of EVERYONE.
Now I cannot access the drive - period. The security tab is not an option anymore. I am logged in as the "real" administrator.
I also tried takeown and CACLS - No luck. Every thing says "Access Denied"
I am sure many users have this issue. Anyone figure out how to fix this?
I cant do system restore it say somthink about the c drive ihave done a scan its telling me that the c drive is ok Also the spell has gone please help cause Im pulling my haie out Im using vista and internet explorer.

(The 3rd one.)I've had the Touchsmart for a month and the case broke - so before I swapped it out at Best Buy I went over to the Backup and Recovery area of Vista and made a full restore on to an external hard drive. The folder "WindowsImageBackup" now exists on my G: external drive. I go swap out the two machines, come home and try and get Backup Status and Configuration to recognize the G: drive backup - it finds the drive, not the backup. I get to the point where it searches for a backup to restore - but it won't see anything there. I can see it, but apparently Windows can't. Besides cuss at HP for making a machine I had to return twice because of hardware issues. It's a sweet little tablet (multi-touch) but I've got some lemons right off the rack. Don't let me down Vista community!
View 4 Replies View Relatedthere's about 3 backups on that partition on my C: drive it has 9GB free this varies some days sometimes it goes up and down though I don't understand why my system restore was put from 15GB to 5GB and this is fine for me I defragment and disk clean alot I have 15GB of music and pictures when I first got the laptop there was about 9GB already filled so where has the rest of the space gone? all my friends laptops have 120GB and they have about 100GB left what's happend to mine and how can I get it back?

I intend to upgrade the internal drive from 80 to 500 GB but as the machine came with an early version of Vista home premium pre-installed I do not have a Vista cd to reinstall the os only a recovery dvd. I have a free version of Macrium reflect that I use to make an image of the comlete C: drive. Is it possible to swap hard drives and copy this image to the new hard drive without any prior formatting or os loaded on it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedFirst off, after restarting my computer one day, I found it to either not get past the loading screen or freeze 5 minutes after if i could log on. I tried a few things that did not work and went to do a system restore from the windows repair tools upon booting up. When i tried to restore i get the message that a system restore cannot be done because the C drive had errors. It prompted me to do a disk consistency check upon restart which i did. After trying a few times i find that it always freezes at 7% through, and will not move. Finally, i tried booting into safe mode, only to find that it too freezes when it is loading files, always at windows/system32/drivers/crcdisk.sys. The computer is only 2 months old, bought brand new at best buy. A rocketfish 550watt power supply and Geforce 9800 video card were installed by the employees, but no other hardware was replaced or tampered with.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI suffered a hardware failure on the system (C:) volume yesterday, which is in a RAID 0+1 configuration (of four Western Digital Raptor 74GB drives). I managed to keep the system up long enough in degraded mode to perform a full (and successful) Complete PC Backup onto an external USB hard drive. This was done just in time, as at the next reboot, the RAID array failed completely and caused data loss (amongst others, my user profile files and the boot manager system file). When I booted up with my original Ultimate DVD and chose to completely restore the PC, it cannot find any images despite the USB drive being connected to the PC. I have verified in the BIOS that the USB drive was recognised. Upon further research, the original (pre-SP1) Vista RE does not support the loading of USB drivers at the Complete PC recovery stage - these drivers have to be loaded in manually via drvload.exe in X:windowssystem32.
I tried to load in drivers in C:windowssystem32 (surprisingly still accessible), but failed to do so. Has anyone done this before? Where do I find the correct INF to load into Vista RE in order to access my Complete PC Backup image? Do I need other INF files in addition to USB.INF to get this working? I presume it may be necessary to get the USB drivers onto a CD-R and loading them in that way, although I'm hoping the solution will be more self-contained on the PC's system drive.
I tried to reformat vista home P. I followed all the steps to get to the advance boot option, selected Repair Your Computer, It went directly to log me on, there was no click Dell Factory Image Restore, no Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory conditions. It took me to the standard log on window. I tried this 3 times with no luck for a reformat to factory condition.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI backup up data to a remote Western Digital drive using the Vista Backup verything seems fine. I selected to backup all files on the "Back Up Files" menu except TV Shows, Compressed Files and Additional Files. My question is, If this hard drive dies and no longer lets me access it (which is what happened to my last XP computer) can I save registry and all other files that will let me restore to another hard drive with the least amount of hassle? Also is there anyway I can save profiles and passwords and the like. Ideally, I'd like to backup my entire hard drive and be able reinstall it to a new hard drive if this one dies. When my XP hard drive died I had my documents saved but had a real problem with this other information.
