ReadyBoost Crap Shoot

Mar 23, 2008

Just sharing an experience. These ReadyBoost usb thumb drives seem to be a real hit and miss thing. I just bought a Patriot 16GB Xporter XTBoost usb thumb drive. I tried it on one computer running Vista Ultimate x64 and the machine just kept trying to find a driver for it but never succeeded in mounting it.

I tried it on another computer running VU x86 and it came right up and let me configure it for ReadyBoost. I then booted into a VU x64 installation on that same computer and it configured it for storage fine but failed it for ReadyBoost.

Ubuntu Is Still A Crap

Dec 1, 2009

People here are smart enough not to use that crappy Ubuntu in any form. Alpha, Beta, or Release. Ubuntu is still the same crap. Doesn't run the popular software programs out there. Most reject Ubuntu as garbage.

Cut The Crap: Classic Is Slower Than Aero (*).

Apr 13, 2008

Cut the crap: classic is slower than aero (*) Ahhh yes.. educating the vistaboys once more.. the cluless mvps and vista-trolls alike. What can I do.. its so ironic that I, who think vista is a bucket of crap, know more than most fanboys about their OS. So here is the lesson of the day:

(*) Classic is slower than aero on machines that are aero glass capable. This is a clear fact that so many have gotten wrong is hilairious. Even tech geeks give this as one of their tips to make vista faster.

If your card doesnt support aero then classic is as slow as with the aero basic theme, and that means absolutly NO acceleration (compared to XP that DID have GDI acceleration that was lighning fast!) But its not faster with classic theme. Its slower........

Does MS Test Crap Or Pass By The Testers Desk

Jun 14, 2008

I'll be damned if Vista insists on biting me after every damn update! Does MS even test this crap or simply pass it by the testers desk? I get things calmed a bit then another update and I'm losing text and the cursor has an epileptic fit. This is a systemic situation starting last November to present as things were fine till they updated something. I've spoken with users from private community to DOD and they all report same.

Delete MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, Games/etc Crap Folders Which Are Inaccessible

Jun 11, 2009

I was able to delete MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, Games/etc crap folders which are inaccessible or @least undeletable for normal people. I can delete Windows itself, of course won't ever do that, but theoretically I defeated every shiled that prevents normal people to fully control their "assets". My point is not to brag about it or advertise pointless actions. I am just happy I own this laptop & every bit of harddisk except Bootsector (which I can still penetrate with special binary tools).

Things people think can't be done, can be done if you have brains. Also since I hate WinLiveMail and all Live applications, I forced regular WinMail to work under WIndows7 RC; I am sure when Windows7 comes out I won't be bothering with LiveMail horrendous crapware. WinMail will work here, ideally I want OutlookExpress but... there's a technical problem that prevente dme from forcing it run under Windows7 (too long to explain). Or I might simply start using Outlook which's been idle in my MSOffice2007,except it's too bloated and makes me feel bad about losing good old OE. So folks, you can access and delete things, dont ask me how b/c Microsoft who runs these forums will not appreciate, I just can do whatever.... it's my laptop after all.

Readyboost

Feb 7, 2010

I had an 8 gig stick I was using before and it was working fine. Unfortunately my nephew knocked over my laptop and bent the stick. I just purchased a new 16 gig stick and put it in but it doesn't seem to be working. The stick is readyboost capable but the light isn't flashing. Tried it on another computer and it worked there. When I bring up the properties and click the readyboost tab it is never enabled. I click enable and apply and it flashes for about 10 seconds and then nothing again. This happens everytime I open the preferences and also happens with the other stick I bought for my other computer.

Should Use ReadyBoost?

Apr 6, 2008

I have a laptop with Vista, 2 GB RAM. Should I expect a performance boost if I use ReadyBoost? I have a built-in memory card slot that I never use, and I wonder if I should buy a ReadyBoost-capable card, stick it in there and use it to boost my computer. I use Home Premium and 2 GB was recommended, but will 2 or 4 GB available for ReadyBoost

Anyone Using ReadyBoost

Mar 23, 2008

I've just installed a USB flash memory drive that is capable of supporting ReadyBoost. After setting up the memdrive to use ready boost all it seems to do is sit there and blink it's little LED's heart out. Is this normal when using ReadyBoost or is there a problem here?? Aside from that, I don't see any changes or benefits to my system. Is there away to test/check to see if readyboost is functioning correctly??

Readyboost Evaluation

Mar 23, 2008

Vista Home Premium with 2GB memory DDM installed.

Desktop computer, 320GB hdd. Brand new.

Added a 2gb pen drive in an extra USB 2.0 port on back of computer which indicates when I look at drive (right click> properties> ready boost) that ready boost is activated, cache set at 1810 mb, the maximum suggested by ready boost.

Yet, in Vista welcome center, only 1.87 GB ram shows.

How can I evaluate Ready Boost pen drive's addition to computer performance?

Will ReadyBoost Do Anything Significant

I use Vista Home Premium 32 and have a machine with 2 GB RAM. Will ReadyBoost do anything significant for me, or am I pretty squared away already? I'm considering getting a 2 or 4 GB USB drive for this purpose, but I wonder if it will essentially be a waste of money.

Flash Drives, ReadyBoost?

I've installed a couple of flash drives that are supposed to support ReadyBoost in Vista on a couple of my Vista computers, however I'm not seeing much on an increase in speed. I've looked at the Task Manager, but I'm not seeing any type of memory size increase either. How does this work? Would it be better to install more ram rather than this setup?

Any Benchmarks Where ReadyBoost Has Really Boosted?

Apr 1, 2008

I'm running Vista Business on a 2.4 GHz AMD LapTop machine, 2GB of RAM. Many of the operations are quite sticky when compared to the old XP machine with 1 GB memory. I was wondering if ReadyBoost would bring some speed-up to Vista. I have seen no speed increase with my current 2 GB USB Boost sticks. Then someone pointed me to this Tom's Hardware page there they have evaluated Ready boost. To me it looks like ReadyBoost would never give even to these guys more than 2..3 percent of speed increase. And in some cases ReadyBoost even made machines with low 1 GB memory slower than without ReadyBoost. Any comments on this Toms's Hardware test, do they runs these tests wrong? I did not find any Microsoft based ReadyBoost benchmarks or anything. Currently I am more of thinking to downgrade operationg system to XP. I will not invest more on another 2GB of true RAM memory upgrade (not a USB Boost) if it is uncertain if even that would speed up this laptop.

ReadyBoost And Laptops Dock

Mar 23, 2008

I have a Dell Latitude D830 with 4Gb RAM. I also have a 4Gb USB drive that is ReadyBoost capatible. Most of the week, the laptop is 'docked' into a Dell docking station, and the USB drive is attached to a USB port on the back of this docking station. Once in a while, the laptop is removed from the docking station, maybe for an hour or two, and then inserted again. When this happens, Vista sometime does not seem to see the USB drive and the ReadyBoost file... I have right mouse click the drive, select ReadyBoost and tell it use this device for ReadyBoost.....

Other then clicking "Undock", is there anything I need to do to prepare Vista to undock from the docking station, and to see the USB drive after docking?

Disable ReadyBoost While On Battery?

Aug 8, 2009

got a Lenovo X61t laptop/tablet with built-in SD card reader and I'm using the reader mainly with a 4G sdhc for readyboost. Often readyboost decides to reorder/refresh the cache with lots of SATA drive activity for 5 minutes or so. On AC this is fine. But it also happens on battery which is drains the battery faster. So is there any method (say, even some 3rd party prog) to conditionally tell readyboost not to refresh cache while on battery?

Readyboost Controlling And Detecting

Jun 2, 2008

How to detect whether readyboost is active or not? I have a 2GB USB Sandisk with U3, it was once used for readyboost, but no more (at least, I don't want it to be). Apparently, because it has U3 on it, when the autoplay comes up one doesn't even see readyboost as an option under 'General Options'. However, if one does a 'properties' and navigates to the 'Readyboost' tab, it is always set as if it were being used - even though it doesn't appear like it actually is.

I have another USB flashdrive that I may occasionally use as a readyboost when working with large spreadsheets, databases or projects. BTW so far, I'm not seeing a big performance boost from readyboost. My understanding of may be flawed; but, I think all it does is cache to the USB stick, which is faster than the hard drive.
