I have been using Google to find some desktop backgrounds my antivirus program popped up saying there was a trojan on two sites I went to. So I am afraid to look for anmore sites . Would someone please tell me where I can find some safe sites?
View 9 RepliesI have a HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop computer. HP Total Care Advisor tells me only 4% is free on drive C. I ran disk defragmentation, disk cleanup, and uninstalled a good amount of programs I no longer use. It did not do anything. Once and awhile I get a prompt in the bottom right corner saying that I have low disk space. When I click on it it wants to run disk cleanup which does absolutely nothing. How do I free up space and make my computer perform the best it can?

Today I discovered that it can actually be used to find also MP3s by duration (finally)! Let's say you want to search for all music >6 mins long... First enable natural language search, it's much easier: ...after this passage, you can type in this in the Start menu: music duration >3600000000 and you'll find all MP3s greater than 360 seconds (6 mins)! Isn't that simple? Don't ask my you have to add 7 zeroes after the seconds, but it works! Obviously you can do much more with the Advanced Query Syntax and this is just an example Hope this hint can be useful for others as it was for me... All I did was tried emptying some stuff I wasn't using but once I hit "empty recycle bin" my shortcut disappeared and I cannot find the program to remake the shortcut. I have a Vista Home Premium Laptop, an XP Home laptop and an XP Home desktop (and an XBox 360) connected to my Linksys wireless G router and an XP Home desktop connected via CAT5 to the same router. All connect to the internet fine. The XP laptop finds and uses the printer on the desktop fine. I had setup a share of the Canon I560 printer, connected to my XP desktop, on the Vista laptop and it worked fine. I don't believe I made any changes, but now it won't find the printer and I can't seem to install a new copy.
The Vista machine will not detect the printer and won't even find the XP desktop or laptop on the network. The XP machines find each other fine. All machines get their IP address from the router via DHCP. All are in the same workgroup, or it seems so. Strangely the Vista machine shows WORKGROUP and the XP machines show Workgroup, even if I type the name in caps, XP still shows Workgroup and Vista WORKGROUP.............
I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a new HP pavilion laptop. I'm trying to log into my work system remotely. The error I'm getting is "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Remote desktop cannot find the remote computer. Type the computer name or IP address again, and then try connecting" I've tried the help desk at work, they say they know there has been issues with people loggin in with Vista, but its been resolved. But they have not actually been able to help me log in. They are running Windows NT.

I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc
etc
It just doesn't work. Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in windows2000? I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. But not having a working search function doesn't look that "ultimate" to me.
I can't get it to work. I tried running as administrator and no luck. I have a Asus G2 series gaming laptop-OS Vista Home premium 32 bit. The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. I tried putting my computer in a 800x600 resolustion and still didn't start it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am surprised at how Vista refuses to release memory. I have disabled Supercaching entirely, and still I find that free RAM drifts from 0 to 50MB quite regularly. Way back in the day, I used to use an app called CacheMan - it would prompt the system to release physical RAM back to the system. It worked very well. The folks who develop CacheMan are working on a Vista64 version, but it's not quite cooked yet.
I'm looking for recommendations on mechanisms to prompt the release of this RAM. The reason for this is that I am trying to troubleshoot occasional mouse lockups, which feel like the system's swapping. Unfortunately, my HDD LED isn't working and my hard drives are pretty much silent. So if the system is actually swapping, I have no way to know aside from keeping a PerfMon session running all the time. I see various shareware apps out there to release RAM on demand or on schedule - I'm looking for recommendations. Once CacheMan is ready for Vista I'll give that a go.
I need a free antivirus program that I can leave disabled and one that I don't have to disable everytime I start up the ol laptop. I'm using Vista and I have tried AVG, AntiVir, and Avast!, none of which will let me permanently disable on startup.I need an antivirus program (who doesn't?), but I do not need one running all the time.

Now you must begin the task of deleting old files and folders to reclaim space but where do you start? In the past I would suggest manually checking the sizes of all of your folders so you know where to begin the hunt but now there is a great utility called WinDirStat that does the work for you. After inspecting a drive you are shown exactly how much data is in each folder, what file types are taking up the most space and even a visual representation of the files on your disk....

when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.
I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.

The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. I Can't right click on the desktop, and when i move the cursor inside it, it's still "loading" for ever.

To stop the little bubble thing to stop coming out from the taskbar at start up, i selected the option thati would monitor my own systesm secruity.. View 9 Replies View RelatedInstalled Free AVG 8 here today on two systems - Vista Home Premium SP1 and XP SP3 with IE7.
On the Vista machine, the installation of AVG 8 broke IE7 in opening a second window - it just hung until the "not responding" message appeared.I tried installing AVG without the surfsearch function, and without the Linkscanner module - still couldn't open a second window in IE. Uninstalling of AVG 8 cured the problem.
The installation on XP SP3 with IE7 had no effect at all. IE7 behaved perfectly normally.
Anyone seen this, and is there a fix?
(The reason I went for AVG is that it picked up a virus on my XP machine
