Hanging Up/not Responding
Jun 27, 2008
I keep having the problem of MS Outlook not responding, or clicking on a link in an email and nothing happening, or clicking on any way to get into explorer either from a desktop or task bar icon, etc. If I shut down or restart it clears up for a while, but comes back soon, eventually. I have IE version 7, Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1. (32 bit) How can I keep this from happening?

I have a problem with Vista. Recently, if I don't use a computer about 20-30. minutes and then try to run something then the explorer hangs and doesn't, ALT + CTRL + DEL combination doesn't work . If a program was run before the shell hangs then it will continue to work whereas the explorer is hanging. I have tried to left performance monitor opened and found that the CPU and HDD were not used while the shell was hanging. If I active use the computer without long inactivity then nothing happens.

On a couple occasions now, I have left the computer, and then come back to the computer to see the screen all black with that circular Vista logo in the middle of the screen. I take it that means the screensaver was about to kick in? Well the system did not respond either time. What is going on here? These Vista freezes are getting tiresome. I have also had problems with Chess Titans. If I open IE while playing it, then system is guaranteed to freeze. If I try to maximize the Chess Titans window, the system is guaranteed to freeze. Some people warned me not to get Vista. If I can't fix the freezing, then I will regret not listening to them.

Working on a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617, using Windows Vista Home Premium. It started out with hangtime -- a lot of hangtime. With anything that put a little stress on the system: music, games, movies were all useless to me now. Even web browsing was a chore, with a 15-second hangtime for each web page opened -- sometimes twice (much worse on the graphics-heavy sites). The system was also extremely slow retrieving files on the hard disk. I didn't know what to do for several months until I narrowed the cause down to the Windows Update Error 80070426. Based on advice to other people with similar problems that I found here and other places, I took the following steps: I made sure my copy of Vista was re-authenticated, then I tried installing the updates again. No luck.
The next option was to restore my machine to the factory settings. This could be accomplished rather easily with the system restore disk that came with the computer. Except that during my last move, the wife thought the computer box would make nice storage for drinking glasses, and promptly emptied the contents of the box. That stuff has not been seen or heard from since. Whenever I describe my computer woes to somebody and they ask why I don't just restore it with the backup disk, I just give the wife a hard stare and shake my head a little, saying nothing.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium edition and I am using Windows Live One Care. Today there was an update to Windows Live One Care. Now when I open windows mail it gets stuck on the authorizing screen and I get this message Account: 'shawmail', Server: 'shawmail', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19
I have 2 e-mail accounts and the 2nd one works fine but the first one does not, I have not changed anything, it was working fine yesterday. I even deleted and remade both accounts and it still does the same thing. If I leave windows mail open eventually it will get past the authorizing and it will receive the e-mails but it is very slow on my regular e-mail address.

The issue is that ever since I installed Vista, it will randomly, without warning, hang for about 30 seconds and then resume without issue.
- Reinstall Vista (done)
- Change SATA to ATA (not possible with Dell Bios)
- Defrag HD (Done)
- Check for Hardware Errors (No issues under XP for 2 years)
- Virus program (does this when AVG isn't installed)
- Drivers (all up to date drivers, froze before nvidia/creative drivers
installed)
- Bios (Latest bios version from Dell)
I have watched the reliability monitor and event viewer and I am not seeing any errors at the time of freezing. I really think this issue needs to be addressed because in my search of these forums and the internet, MANY people are having these problems, but no one is explaining it well enough and so many of the answers are unrelated.

I recently purchased a nice shiny new HP Pavilion DV7-1130US. It came with vista ultimate x64 SP1. I wanted XP but that was not an option. For the first few hours it was very buggy and explorer was hanging alot. After awhile it got better and for about 2 weeks i was really starting to enjoy my lovely new laptop. Well today, for from what I can see no reason whatsoever, my laptop has become unusable. My symptoms are similar to those discussed in this thread: Windows Explorer Crashes I boot up, log in, everything seems ok for the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then explorer freezes and I cant access or use any applications, everything goes into "not responding" mode, and none of my clicks register. Then 2-5 minutes go by and all my clicks happen at once. It seems like explorer restarts once or twice during this too as I get the "ding" sounds.
I have also received some memory errors, and fatal application crashes from various applications. I cant even do anything, I tried to get to system restore in the first 30 seconds after boot up when the computer is usable, but i cant make it and am not sure where system restore is located. I love my new laptop but I am so frustrated right now that I could smash it against the wall. I blame vista, as I am using an old ass XP desktop right now that works absolutely fine, never ever crashes, yet my shiny new fancy HP dual core 4 gigabytes of ram vista x64 bit laptop is ****ing worthless............

When you click shut down, Vista doesn't shut down, or do anything for that matter. If it cannot terminate all processes, in about 3 to 5 minutes it will pop up this screen that say like "this process is hanging, click here to terminate and shut down" or something like that.

I have been trying to run Windows Live One Care Safety Scanner (beta for vista) I can successfully install and run it but when it performs the scan and it reaches 97% completion the program hangs. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. I thought the problem might have arisen due to vista's securitythen reinstall th features so I first made sure to run internet explorer browser when I re-downloaded the scanner files. However, this has made no difference... the scanner still installs and runs but again upon reaching 97% completion hangs.
I am interested to know if anyone else has encountered this problem and better still if anyone knows how to resolve it.

Built a new pc last week. Installed vista 64, all was great! Installed Crysis (what a game!!!) Connected to the net...downloaded microsoft updates...dvd stops responding. Thats where i've been ever since. I've spent hours trawling the net trying different things ie upper/lowerfilters (which don't appear in my registry), remove drive, re-install, checking drivers/firmware, apply registry patch, but still can't get it to work. I've tried to start a fresh install of vista but without a dvd drive thats difficult! (not sure how much begging required :-) Device manager shows no errors - dvd working fine! DVD is TSST Sh S223Q samsung dvd/rw P5Q PRO m/b q6600 HD 4850 4gb corsair ram....

Works, Office 2007, Lotus 123 and others, constantly freeze and (Not Responding). My first reinstall was because UAC locked me out of Drive C:, yet the OS seemed to run ok. I took ownership and all priveledges and still could not access. Finally reinstall! I backed up drive C: before reinstalling (choose Drive C: only) yet when I reinstalled the backup it overwrote Drive D: Partition) Corrupting it. Second reinstall was similar only affected Drive M: again same problems forcing This time reload from CD. Also have a lot of trouble dropping the network connection. This time I cannot (chkdsk M: /f), when I use F9 On boot it only checks CPU, Memory (4mb) and drive C: Then it aborts. All my diag programs uncover no problems. Drives all check healthy and have been defraged regularly. All programs load extremely slow (2.4G Intel core 2 Quad Q6600) I think it should be fairly quick to respond.

I just recieved my new Dell with Vista 64-Bit Home Premium on Friday (the 8th) and since the initial start-up, I can be doing anything (web surfing, viewing task manager, any program) and without any warning the program just stops responding. In most cases I can't minimize or close the program and clicking Start - Restart even does not respond. The 'only' way to end this and restart the computer is by actually unplugging the power cable.
Viweing the Event Viewer I see that within 2 days, I have 83 Error messages listed under Windows Logs - Applications (These are the red buttons under the LEVEL column). All updates are installed. I have to write this quickly before the bugger freezes up again.

I have been having to use the Task Manager to shut down Internet Explorer due to the pages freezing up. When I open task manger it indicates that the page is not responding. This happened approximately 30 times today alone. I have no idea what is causing this problem so I don't have a clue as to what to do to fix it. I finely got so frustrated I just gave up and shut my system down.I'm running the VISTA operating system and, as stated above.

Ever since a few days ago whenever i go to open my Briefcase on my desktop it takes an enormous amount of time to open and all that appears when i click the icon on the desktop is a blank window in which it says at the top " EXPLORER(NOT RESPONDING)". It takes the briefcase a few minutes to finally open and display all my files and folders inside.
It is also a pain when i am attempting to save something. For example: if i was to attempt to download a file i would click save, and normally it would direct itself into my briefcase. It still directs itself to my briefcase accept now the save procedure is "Not Responding and it takes plenty time to start responding and working again.

whenever i log in, it sometimes says that explorer.exe is not responding. I then restart it, but whenever i try to open something that needs explorer.exe, like my computer, explorer.exe goes away again and i lose my desktop and task bar. This has been happening for the past few days, and i don't want to use a restore because that would take me back around 2 months ago.

Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Trying to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate (using upgrade Cd). Anything I try to do that uses the : AutoLaunchVWLASU (install, delete, try to defrag, etc...) - - when in Task Manager it lists this ALWAYS as, "Not Responding". I always have to end Task using Task Manager. Do I have a PC Problem (Sony VGC-LV150J) or a Windows Installation Issue. Cannot even invoke System Config or even RegEdit from the Start menu.

I have a friend who has an HP laptop, Windows Vista (obviously lol) and, at first his internal mic would pic up sound-music, background noise, &c., but not voice. On Skype it said that it was muted. There were no "mute/un-mute" buttons to be found, anywhere. And it wasn't just on Skype either. Yahoo too. It just wouldn't register it at all. He was trying to mess with the mic settings/ recording device settings and I guess he clicked on disable. He was going to try and enable it again but, it deleted the entire device!!! So now he can't mess with it or see it or anything. It says "No Audio Devices Are Installed."

I have been running Vista for some time on a new machine. Non responsive programs are a daily, no make that an hourly occurance. Most of the time they end up launching successfully or overcoming the hanging problem, but quite often Vista will warn that the program needs to shut down. The program that seems most susceptible to this is CorelDraw X3 although it does it on all programs including Windows mail. Is this normal behaviour? Windows XP very rarely caused problems.

I've recently built a new PC, and this is the first time I've gone for vista. Was previously an XP32 / Ubuntu fan so this is new to me.
I have a rather strange issue that I can't pinpoint the cause on.
After some time (maybe a few hours), firefox will stop working. It doesn't crash, but it just won't load any pages, it just "hangs". The same thing will happen for IE. If i close firefox the window closes, but its still in task manager.
I can't kill the process, well I can click kill, but it doesnt go. I can't load up firefox cos its already running (apparently), and I can't shut the system down, presumably because of this firefox process still running.
I get the same with uTorrent, after about an hour it stops responding and prevents me from shutting down the system.
At the moment I have to just switch the PC off at the mains, and I'm not sure this is a healthy practice.
I was running Avast, Zonealarm. but I have since uninstalled those. I still have the same issue, even if i disable the windows firewall etc.
Any ideas? I've tried googling but it just returns threads suggesting to uninstall antivirus/firewalls
