Fake Anti-virus Popup Scam: Restarting Computer
May 29, 2009
My son got duped by a fake anti-virus popup scam. He followed some directions that included restarting computer, when it rebooted almost all icons in the tray were gone. It removed my Verizon security suite, will not let me access any windows security features, will not let me download any of the free a/v-a/spyware recommended by other posters in this sys security forum. It won't let me uninstall ANY programs. It pops up every 3-4 mins declaring Internet explorer has a worm trying to access my credit card info or with a list of all these other infections,it's relentless. It will not let me use Firefox. It added it's own icon in my tray and calls itself System Security. It blocks any attempt to use/download anything to use against it whether it's windows defender/malware remover or commercial products. What the hell!!? Anyone heard of this particular level of scam and take over of computer function? Any ideas to defeat it? Using Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

This friend of mine has real problem with her laptop (Vista sp1)it was first noticed when her anti-virus did a scheduled scan. The anti-virus program hung whilst scanning the System32 folder.I tried with Windows Defender. Same thing, it hangs after a while.
I de-activated her anti-virus program (forgot the name. Not a well known brand) and downloaded/installed Avast, to no avail it also hangs whilst scanning the System32 folder.I also tried to scan using SFC/scannow. The PC freezes at 68 % of the scan.I tried these different manipulation in safe mode.Same results and everytime, the PC Freezes and I am obliged to do a hard stop/restart.

I was browsing online (no naughty sites, I promise) I opened a window that appeared to have one of those classic fake antivirus programs.. you know the kind, "Your computer may be infected get a free scan now!!" The green progress bar at the bottom of my IE window started to move across as if something was downloading so I didn't stick around. I tried to close the window by right clicking on the task bar, that didn't work, so I shut down my internet connection. To close the window I shut down my computer. I restarted, and all seemed to be well. I have the Norton fraud monitoring active on IE and it didn't show any errors, but just to be safe, I scanned with both Defender and my Norton (both up to date). Nothing came up.
I checked my software explorer with Defender, no new startup programs, no unfamiliar processes. The computer is acting normal. No pop ups, no unusual CPU activity. The one thing that worries me is that when I went looking into the reports and activities section of my Norton software, under 'firewall activities' starting yesterday at around the time this all happened, I saw this message showing up

which anti virus is best and doesn't makes PC slower.the problem is disk cleaners or anti viruses sometimes removes some vital system files or registry keys or some programs after virus scan don't work.for example my Kasper anti virus deleted a file as torjen than blue screen started to comes after booting and couldn't able to boot vista again so had to format it.looking for a anti virus that has everything and doesn't have risk after deleting the files that it detects as virus or Trojan.

I am attempting to load AVG onto my computer, but every time I do, it tells me I'm already running an anti-virus program, and I know it's not a good idea to run two at the same time. I previously had the CA Anti-Virus Suite, but I've uninstalled that program successfully. The only other thing I can think of is the McAfee VirusScan which came with Vista, but I assume was just a free trial and is now out-of-date. How do I find out what the computer thinks I'm still running? And if it is this McAfee trial, how do I get rid of it? I don't see that option anywhere.

I have a question about anti virus programs.
Recently I had some trouble with malware and came to realize how truly useless McAfee is, as my friend put it "its a DCS anti virus (doesn't catch ****)".
A few people recommended AVG and after doing some research it seems to be the way to go.
I was wondering what your opinions on AVG are and if there is anything else I could use to keep my comp safe. (I have ad block plus for firefox and malwarebytes but thats all. I feel bad for not being more careful with my poor machine, it's been abused)
Another thing. Would it be smart to just go ahead and remove McAfee from my computer completely after I get a new virus program?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (SP2) (32-bit) on a Toshiba Satellite A215. I'm trying to install Symantec Endpoint Protection (32-bit) that I downloaded from the ACERT website for home use. (Unmanaged, typical install). For some reason, it gets to: Removing System Registry Values in the install process, then says, "Rolling back action," and cancels the install. It says, "The wizard was interrupted before Symantec Endpoint Protection could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete
installation at another time, please run setup again." I have restarted and tried again, same thing.

My new laptop arrived this afternoon. I turned it on, it was working fine. I'm using Vista Home Premium. I installed CA Anti-virus software and after the installation my computer restarted. Since then, I haven't been able to get to the desktop. I get the BSOD with an arrow. After about 30 seconds displaying the BSOD, it automatically reboots and repeats the cycle continuously. I've tried F8 upon restart and chose last known configuration but I get the same BSOD. I also tried to get into safe mode but after choosing the option it goes back to the BSOD.....................

This application dropped in on my computer while my son (age 15) was on line. It offered a FREE a/virus scan which he accepted. However when it came to the remove part he found that this would cost money so he declined. Now I am desperately trying to rid myself of this curse. I cannot open any downloads or anything else without this warning me that I must remove viruses with this prog before any further progress can be made. I cannot be removed with my ununstallers, nor with its own. Equally I cannot get system restore to do its tricks,This is a really bad one.

My computer keeps shutting down and destroyed everything in the Control Panel. I'm using (IE & FF3) and they keep shutting down. I ran AVG and it shows that I have an infected virus "win32/Heur". I don't have anthying important saved on my labtop that I care about. I basically use it for surfing the net. I purchased it 4 months ago. My questions are. It did not come with the Installation Disk(s), It was pre-installed. How can I re-install everything that if it was the same way when I purchased it? If I reinstall (reformat), will my labtop still be infected with the virus?

It seem to remove sucessfully but when checking the security, it still shows AVG as running. Is there anything you can suggest to remove the program before I install a new anti virus??

Anyone know why Kaspersky Anti-Virus sees the lastest version of Creative Labs' OpenAL (oalinst.exe) as malware/riskware? I had on old copy of openal and it was detected as malware/riskware, so I re-downloaded it from Creative Labs' website here: Home - OpenAL, and it too gives the same warning under Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7. I use 3DMark06 under vista64 and it requires the latest version of OpenAL to run.

I am COMPLETELY new to Vista Forums! I have a big problem... I recently got my computer cleaned thru eRecover in Acer. When all that was done, I installed McAfee 2009 ( thru a website for free... ) and i noticed my computer got REALLY slow...I uninstalled it, and i got McAfee Security ( I got it for free since I have ComCast Internet ) Ever since, my Anti-Virus has constantly been turning off. One time, it even said that McAfee Virus Scan was never installed... and I also downloaded a torrent. ( Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 ) anti-virus STILL keeps on turning off...

I have just installed the above and updated the latest definititons, and as someone who knows, not a lot re.computers, does that mean it takers the place of an anti-virus programme? I have AVG installed and I'm happy with it. I'm not sure if the above will conflict with AVG as it says MSE it is a virus and spyware scanner.
